They did mention why she was an orphan. Heiter (the priest) said her family and village was victim of a war. I don't know if you remember, but she was going to toss herself off a cliff before Heiter interrupted.

So regarding Himmel scolding Frieren for using flashy big spells, in the scene she's talking about it she's looking down at the armour and its sorta implied that she has more respect for the armour or the people that used to be in it. I'm assuming in the previous battle with Aura, Frieren was just destroying the armour as part of the fight and I think Himmel wanted Frieren to respect them since they were warriors that died fighting Aura. Which is also why she chooses to dispel the spell controlling them keeping them intact instead of blasting them like she used to.
I'm assuming the armor still has the dead bodies inside.
@6:27 they need to be reminded that at episode 2, it showed Fern looking at a pendant with picture of them as a family and was at a cliff having to contemplate of suicide.
Right then and there Heiter saved her life. Also, if she is part demon, Heiter would have killed her already and no chance of even introducing her to Frieren.

What that flashback implied is that Himmel scolded Frieren for blowing up all those armors mercilessly. Actual people died wearing those suits of armor. They died in it. Himmel wanted Frieren to respect them. That's why today, she doesn't blow them up. She dispels the controlling magic instead.
And yeah. Fern is a war orphan. She was in a place that looked like ruins and she was about to jump off a cliff when Heiter stopped her and took her in.
I'm not sure Aura's victims were even technically dead (until Frieren dispelled Aura's magic); _physically,_ sure, and mentally (because of the beheadings to prevent them from rebelling), but Aura's magic seems to bind their _souls_ to her service (it doesn't say anything about animating armour, or armour clad skeletons), so _those_ were probably still trapped in the armour, animating it (instead of resting in Aureole or whatever souls do in the Frieren universe), even if the corpses inside were long decayed.
So as I see it it's more about releasing these trapped souls instead of fighting (and possibly harming?) them than about respect for the dead (though that also plays a part, especially once they've been released and Aura has been defeated).
Media literacy is dead when something SO STRAIGHT FORWARD has to be explained. I mean this is writing 101, following this NARRATIVE FACT isn't hard, the damn show literally FEEDS it to you on a silver platter.
What makes Aaron think the demons don't train? They were arrogant here, but his speech about hating geniuses who don't have to work as hard implies that he was training and refining his magic. He was probably stronger than he was 80 years ago. Just because they were defeated here doesn't mean they are stagnant.
I swear he and the whole Blind Wave crew are the masters of horrible praxeological thinking and bad axioms.

I love animation bits like that. It's one thing to find a show where they go all out animating someone swinging a sword or firing an energy blast, but things like stark putting on that jacket or another episode where Fern smooths the bottom of her dress before having a seat... It reminds me of things like in Mushoku Tensei season 1 where that piece of bread gets torn in half. Little things that to the action or story mean nothing, yet tons of work was put in to make them look great. Shows just how much the artists care making shows like this.

Honestly, I love how Frieren is similar to One Punch Man. Extremely strong character just living her life, and goes mostly unrecognised as the powerhouse she is. I love the next episode.

Fern and Stark are like if Freiren and Eisen made Smurf accounts. Their floor is so high because of their teachers and potential that they don’t even realize they’re punching below their weight class half the time.
There's this neat thing called a gambesson, which is both armor and clothing. It's just very thick layers of linen glued/woven together which proects you against cuts.
"Maybe Fern is a demon because she can suppress her mana" it's the exact opposite actually lol
We did briefly see Fern's parents in a flashback somewhere in the first 4 episodes, it does not seem like she's a demon

The story has gone out of its way to stress that demons are merely highly intelligent monsters so having a twist that they could control themselves long enough to procreate with a human like it would undermine that.
They can control themselves. They just lack certain emotions and don't understand parts of human society. To rhe point that they'll always eventually kill someone if around people long enough.

I consider armor anything that was purposely made to defend yourself from someone else's attack. All clothing can help protect you, but that is only because there is a layer of something that gets in the way, meanwhile armor is made with the purpose of more effectively defend from an attack (mostly one that is intentional).
Ornamental armour is also a thing, though.
Certain kinds of dueling swords that have no real edge and are designed primarily as piercing weapons also have the issue of pushing clothing into a wound to create an infection.
