So basically mana is a dick measuring contest to demons, only for Aura to discover her opponent isn't even hard yet.
great comment
Yes, but why did you have to put it that way?
Aura was deafeated by Frieren´s BEC. Big elvish... :x
Its such a simple concept of hiding your power level that it feels weird for an anime to treat it with such wonder and importance but it crafted a world where it works so well.
What I loved so much is that the creator gave reasons for why demons cannot conceal their power, in order to gain status and a following to begin with and likened it to humans treat status based on wealth and bloodlines, which also makes fun of how our ways seem silly.
Even here, they bring up its not as if demons cannot tell when people suppress their mana. For Flamme's strategy to work the user needs to be very skilled so they don't reveal discrepancies within the mana to give it away to demons. Even strong mages need years of training to pull this off and even then for this prove worthwhile the mage must than build up their overall skill and mana to still be decently strong to capitalize on it. The demons can be taken off guard, but if the mage is fairly weak in comparison that is not going to help as much. It explains why most mages concerned with trying to kill the demons are probably focusing on spending their time building up their power.
"The one standing before you is a Great Mage who lived _more than a thousand years_ ."
Frieren is the one that popularized zoltraak as a regular offensive spell. We don't know how old Frieren is, we just know she is older than 1000.
and at the same time we know that she can't be much more than 1000 because as she said it herself in this episode, she has been suppressing her mana for the better part of her life, so she met Flamme during the "early" years of her life.
Also her and Ferns version is a heavily modified version specifically for killing demons
Himmel's hunch reflects Frierens hunch on Flamme's power as a mage despite her small mana output. Thats why she joined.
FYI, the zoltrak spell was researched by Frieren and it was said a few episodes ago, that she advanced understanding of the spell a lot since her Hero's party days. That is, it didn't get told about to other mages back in Flamme's time as it was not invented yet.
"Are you all right" always make me laugh after this. like not Arua, lol.
Wow that flashback after Himmel recruit Frieren is awesome. You blink and you miss it. Just like Frieren.
There's only a single handful of episodes that have made me genuinely speechless, and the day this aired, it immediately made it to said hand. We all knew how it was gonna end, but the way it was built up over the course of the entire episode made it truly special.
I'm a sucker for really good build up, even more than its pay-off in some cases, because a pay-off wouldn't even hit half as hard if it weren't for its build up, and I haven't seen build up this good in a loooong time before this
I wish I was able to experience it like that, but unfortunately every single reaction channel that was watching live at the time used the image of Aura cutting her head off in their thumbnail, so my feed completely spoiled the ending. Like, you *knew* that Frieren was going to win, but come on guys, think a little first.
I love that Frieren is basically on a furious, roaring rampage of revenge.... On a very, very long timescale. Like Frieren is very stealthily a very angry character, but it's only the demons who realize it.
A barbarian berzerker who's also a turtle.
Himmel: "Frieren, let's go!"
Frieren: "I want to stay in a town for two years and read books!"
Himmel: "We'll kill demons."
Frieren smiles
I like the detail of the blade cutting Aura's hair. She seems the type of person that would command one of her minions to do nothing but spend 16 hours a day sharpening her "decapitation blade."
This is a memorable episode but believe it or not it gets better. Flamme is to humanity magic what Henry Ford was with the Cars to, he made cars widespread thats how i view it.
man that was still so hype. goosebumps
Love the breif talk about Douglas Adams. He had a writing style that no one else has been able to replicate. I highly recommend Last Chance To See his nonfiction book about looking for endangered species.
"We asked, tentatively, if we could perhaps take a snake bite detector kit with us to Komodo. "'Course you can, 'course you can. Take as many as you like. Won't do you a blind bit of good because they're only for Australian snakes." "So what do we do if we get bitten by something deadly, then?" I asked. He blinked at me as if I were stupid. "Well, what do you think you do?" he said. "You die, of course. That's what deadly means.""
I’d say sir terry Pratchett had a similar style to him
@@joeb8935 Yeah Pratchett was also great at wording things in an unexpected way that was very funny.
Frieren: Unalive yourself.
Aura: Yes Ma'am.
Frieren: Now watch me walk away like a badass.
Aura: 🙄
I have been waiting for this episode probably the most coldest moment in frieren
This and last episode are fantastic. Great reaction guys!!!
While the idea of mana suppression is a pretty simple power scaling concept I do really appreciate the small nuance that makes this implementation special. While anyone can do it and thinks of it as a possibility in combat, any significant suppression is relatively detectable by other trained mages. (though it can still be used to make your exact power somewhat more uncertain) So mana suppression as a skill truly is useless in most cases because the sheer time and constant effort required to master it to a useful degree is not only out of reach for humans, but also a waste of time and effort for anyone else generally. As spending that time to get stronger mana instead gives you a greater benefit to magic than using that same effort to suppress it. But for the show, mana suppression being an actually useless skill (rather than just giving it lip service) is what makes it an effective tool for the few people who have the will and time to practice it.
Damn, Frieren really said "kys noob" to Aura.
I believe when Himmel was chastising Frieren on her flashing spells to defeat Aura's puppets, he was probably trying to get across to her that these were trapped souls of humans that should be treated with more dignity.
Man I’ve been waiting for this! 😂
this episode also give another reason why she now loves to learn simple and "dumb" spells, yes part of it is because of Himmel, but i think part is also about Flammel. Frieren and her master spend most of their life learning magic for the main reason fo killing demons. but now that the demon king, the biggest and worst of all them, now she can understand why that flower spell was ther master favorite: because it give her a conection to her love ones, the same that those "dumb" spells in a way give Frieren a connection to Himmel
"He just thought she was cute and was trying to play it cool" Aaron gets it 😂
Himmel wasn't scolding Frieren's flashy spells because it showed off her power, he scolded her because those flashy spells DESTROYED the controlled bodies. He felt Frieren had disrespected all the people Aura had killed. So Frieren chose to dispel Aura's control this time, because she figured that Himmel was right and she needed to be kinder to all those corpses.
Aaron "Nudity makes you stronger on this planet".
Rick immediately turning to Eric "What the hell is he talking about?".
7:03 Zoltraak came from Qual, the Elder Sage of Destruction, whom Frieren confronted with the party of Heroes almost 90 years ago, after which FRIEREN led the research and understanding of his unique killing magic to usher in a new era of magic for humanity.
This was LONG after the death of Flamme...
I'm glad you guys are enjoying the show a lot more tho~ Some of the things like Zoltraak being a way more recent spell is already explained by other commenters, but I wanted to add to what Calvin said at 11:39. Himmel did not berate Frieren for using flashy Spells because it showed how strong she was. It was because Himmel still respected the Humans that were controlled by Aura, who never fully passed on and are still in this zombiefied state that they can't escape. When Frieren used those flashy spells she made them suffer more in a sense, atleast that's what Himmel thinks, so this time she just broke Aura's control over them, so they could move on to the afterlife. Atleast that's how I interpreted all that.
I don't think it was about them suffering more, they were already beheaded in order to remove all of their will. I interpret it as Himmel's objection to desecrating the bodies and not showing them respect they deserve. But the sentiment is the same
As will be revealed in the beginning of next episode...
This was the episode i was looking forward to the most, such a great ending and awesome episode as a whole!
flamme made magic consumer friendly, is what I think.
Great video. Love your reactions 😊.
Finished this show the other day, 10 out 10, great dub too
Great discussion, guys! It feels like the entire episode was just a build up to Frieren saying KYS but it's worth it. We get more lore about demons and flashbacks of Flamme and Frieren. I like how Aaron compared her training to the gravity room. Frieren was training to get stronger while also having this weight of controlling her mana output all the time. Must have been tough to learn but it pays off. Aura could not detect any fluctuation in Frieren's mana.
I personally love that added detail of Aura being able to observe minute changes in someone's mana. Of course she probably trained herself for that. She has to. If Frieren didn't do this for 1000 years, Aura could very well have found out.
Also... For such a short screen time, Aura is one of the most popular characters in this anime. She got memed on.
Dub was actually fantastic in this. Some of the minor changes sound more epic or poetic the way they localized it. VA's were perfect too.
Agreed, watched the dub first then the sub with some people. Sometimes it feels like the sub have to shorten things to make it readable, you miss so much and it's so much more impactful in the dub.
I disagree. The dialogue is wordier than it needs to be and kind of dumbed down too. The way they changed Heiter's line about how much mana Freiren had was unnecessary, doesn't fit his character and comes off like it was done because they thought the audience was too stupid to understand why Freiren would feel insulted by what he said so they had to change it to a straight up insult.
There've been other times where they've changed the dialogue and it changes the nature of what the person is saying. The first episode was probably the worst when they changed what Freiren said about not getting to know Himmel better. They way the sub had it emphasizes Freiren's perception of how ten years is such a short amount of time to her. Which fits her character and the theme of the show. The dub makes it seem like it's about Himmel being so inscrutable that 10 years was too short for anyone to get to know him. Which makes no sense for her to say it that way.
@@zkeletonz001this sounds like complaining just to complain. Heiter comes off the exact same as he does in sub, he's a young priest and he's prideful in his abilities; he doesn't get to his mature side until he's much older
@@starkillahx It's not the same at all. There's a big difference between giving someone a backhanded compliment and directly insulting them. It's two different types of personalities.
If Aaron enjoyed Douglas Adams and found him funny, he might enjoy Terry Pratchett.
flamme: and we use mana to decieve demons while they use our language to decieve ours. Very simple and nice line
To add context, just as an anime watcher, i think the demons have the advanced knowledge of magic. It was even stated that humans/elves just copied their flying magic to make their own. And that is why they cant fathom mana suppression
Yeah this is the one!
Such a good episode
Remember in Episode 5 when Frieren said that her teacher often begged for her life? Now we know why.
12:00 - Those suits of armor likely contain the remains of all the soldiers Aura took control of, hence why Himmel would not want the suits destroyed and why this time around Frieren simply dispelled the magic animating them instead.
Iirc this will be revealed in the beginning of next episode
12:56 Nice one Eric Lol
Frieren's gamer moment.
Frierens zoltraak is very different from ordinary offensive magic, it's specifically modified to kill demons and is much more powerful than oom
If Rick hasn't watched arcane yet I'd like to watch his reaction before season 2 comes out 😊
So he can join when it comes out
English Frieren having a more "grandma voice" doesn't work as well in the flashbacks with Flamme. I do like it otherwise.
It does not hit the same in dub for me but still a cool episode.
LTG frieren
Where is Doctor who, in twitter the schedule was supposed to be yesterday?
you asked the moment it got uploaded check the channel lol
@@wyren925 2 reasons:
1. I thought they would upload Tuesday morning in my time as I live in the UK and they live in the USA.
2. I only watched and commented when I already watched the show and they reacted to the same show I already watched.
@@animeproduction401 also from UK and i get it I also did the exact same thing, the moment I went to their discord to see if there's was any info on were it is, it got uploaded, just how it goes sometimes lol
@@wyren925 Oh ok
I prefer 'just a feeling'.
Aura thought she was all-that but her mana skills weren't exactly streets a-head. Know what I mean?
>wrong to kill all demons
What a stance to take. Let's go to bat for goblins in GS, orcs in LotR, etc., too. Makes sense.
>like Eren
Had the course been stayed and he did his part, he would have been right to (just as in The Eternal Champion).
>fascism
You what?
"wonder if frieren will fall into the trap of fascism" it's not that deep Eric
I really don't like the way they've changed some of the dialogue for the dub. It's wordier than it needs to be and kind of dumbed down too.
They have to artificially inflate how much is said in English so that it still matches the mouth movements. Every anime does this.
@@meursaulty6672 That's only true in some instances. There were several scenes in this episode, and previous ones, where you couldn't even see the characters mouth, or where you could only see the persons mouth for about half of the time they were talking, and they still made the dialogue longer than the sub. That's what I mean when I say it's wordier than it needs to be. The "needs to be" part is taking into consideration having to match the mouth movements.
Nope, this format of splitting reactions between 2 webs is anoying... Ending this...
man yall are watching the crappy dubs.
I only watch reactions of stuff that I've already seen. I tend not to watch anime reactions because I can't stand the dubbed voices after I've already heard the real ones.
I wanted to see them watch the end of this episode. The voices sound very flat and boring. To me it takes away quite a bit of the overall feeling
