White Guy Surprises People in NYC Chinatown with Perfect Chinese

  • I did a social experiment / prank where as a white guy I walked up to various Chinese vendors in NYC’s Chinatown, began speaking to them in English, and then switched over mid-conversation to Chinese (a combination of Mandarin and Cantonese, Mandarin I’m quite fluent in, Cantonese less so). We filmed their genuine reactions!
This is an idea I’ve been wanting to film for a while, inspired by a combination of videos by JAYKEEOUT and laoshu505000. It didn’t come out quite as I planned, my camera’s autofocus is terrible in bright light, but hopefully this can be the first of a series if you guys like it!

I was going to this local chinese massage place. I just go because every now and then my back acts up on me, and they do this thing with hot rocks, it's very relaxing and soothing, and it seems to help my back. Plus if I go on a saturday around noon they feed me because I was going all the time on saturday, so they started asking if I wanted lunch lol. And I was tipping them like really good for the treatment.
Anyway, I learned how to say hi, you're beautiful and I love you, but not sure how those words would be received by the pretty girl that works there, so I haven't said them. I gave her a little panda I bought from a craft store and she took it and hugged me, but when I said "I have something to give you" she was like "no no" but I gave it anyway and she accepted it. And then the next time I went for a massage the older lady was talking and I was already laying down on the table and they were having a convo in chinese, then in english she says to the pretty girl "chinese girlfriend" and then went back to chinese. Soooo I don't know what that was all about. My guess is the old lady was talking about me and how I needed a chinese girlfriend? I dunno that's a complete guess.
