  • Loomis method explained in FULL DETAIL! Learn how to draw the front and side view of the human head and face, step by step using the Loomis method, plus I added some of my own techniques here and there!
The Andrew Loomis head drawing method is AMAZING, but it took me an extremely long time to fully grasp in order to craft this tutorial. There were some details missing from his book that I couldn't wrap my head around until I started practicing the method every day for about a month. I'm a slow learner and not as bright as the average Joe, but I finally started to piece it all together. This tutorial is meant to fill in all those blanks that I struggled with when I was learning the Loomis method so that I can help other artists learn it more easily and grasp the concepts quickly.
I hope this tutorial was able to clear up any questions or difficulties you have regarding the Loomis method.
Please excuse my raspy voice. I'm still getting over a cold :)

Both of my parents were artists and owned art stores while I was growing up and taught oils acrylics etc and they had various instructors over the years. You are one of the best art teachers I have seen in decades. I just want to say thank you for putting these online and I wish you all the best in your endeavors.

You are one of the best instructors on UA-cam across the board. I watch a lot of options trading tutorials and cooking videos too. They all waste so much time on non-essential things. I appreciate the way you stick to the core subject and are super detailed with your explanations. I'm super surprised at how well my first sketches are turning out! Thank you Darlene!!!🙂

I've seen and practiced with a lot of videos this topic, but yours is truly THE BEST among all of them. I really haven't had the will to practice drawing because of the lack of information that I had and that I was seeing in the videos. I really appreciate a long video that explains everything truly and with no timelapse. You are truly the best, thank you for cheering me up and making me feel that with practice, I truly can one day be a good drawer.

This was amazingly simple, straight forward and to the point and more importantly, very very helpful. Thank you for your time, efforts and for sharing your knowledge. You have a knack for conveying clear, simple, easy to understand instruction on what can sometimes sound overwhelming. No nonsense or fluff. And when you did add anything extra it was merely a helpful little trick/consideration to make things even easier.

My goodness you are great at teaching. For someone who is just learning to draw you really give good instructions to help me get a general feel of what something should look like to then be able to be more creative. I can follow along and begin to understand the general "guidelines" and then practice it over and over and tweak things to get different faces and features and say hey doing this makes it look like this. Huge help to begin learning. Thanks so much!!

I mean I'm sure a lot of it will eventually become second nature and come naturally without having to draw all the guides... But if one is presenting a topic, it should be done thoroughly. Yes, she did a fantastic job explaining this so plainly. Prolly one of the best explanation I’ve had quite frankly. Cleared up a lot of mystery. I feel like she armed with a special secret weapon for successful portraits now. Lol. I could draw them pretty good for just winging it but it’s really nice to to know how to do it quickly and accurately the FIRST time instead of wasting hours of time drawing and erasing over and over again until it looks right. My only artistic ability is the patience to keep erasing my efforts and trying it again over and over until it looks accurate. That’s it! Lol! That’s my secret. Lol! That’s how I knew I could NEVER do this for a living. I’d bankrupt the company at the rate I produce stuff. I couldn’t be that cruel to any business. Or arrogant. Lol. I did a back portrait that my daughter said was really good. I said it SHOULD, collectively speaking it only took me about a month to do it! If I worked in animation I’d be fired within a week at my rate. Lol
