  • Hey guys!
    In this video, we are drawing the human head from 15 different angles. We will be using Andrew Loomis's time-tested method and I think you will be surprised at how quickly you will understand and enjoy drawing like this. No charcoal in this one just colored pencils and your sketchbook is all you need.

    I've been struggling to find a way back into art for about a month now. I could never seem to find someone who explained it in a way that made sense to me. After watching your first video on the Loomis method, I started to grasp the concept and started working in three dimisions on my own. I can't wait to watch the rest of your videos. Definitely a subscriber now.

    I am a student trying to learn to draw and paint. I’ve always loved to draw as a child. Not being able to afford proper classes, I turned to UA-cam and I found you. Thank you! I’m able to learn. You break the lesson down and make it easy to understand. Thank you!!

      You can do it! I'm glad you found the channel. My UA-cam offers a lot of drawing info but if you want my best classes where I give away a ton of drawing tips, tricks, and best practices then I would recommend you sign up for my Skillshare. I also have a new book coming out on June 11, 2024 that you can order. Below are the links to both, good luck on your art journey :)

    I had never heard of 'The Loomis Method' but I realized that I learned to draw people from a book given me in 1986 by an artist friend who bought it in 1958. Turns out it's called "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth." by Andrew Loomis. Great text on drawing, composition and perspective. Good to see it in action now that I am back into making art 30+ years later.

    Just found your channel yesterday as I was looking into a refresher on Loomis heads & their varied angles. Wow! You have done a wonderful job explaining the mechanics of this, especially regarding jaw lines etc. I’ve binged through several of your excellent tutorials already and found the 15 head model provided all the basics. Thank you for creating these videos. I’ve subscribed and will continue watching and drawing along with them in the upcoming days.

    These last two head tutorials were great.... exactly what I was looking for. Now I can "quickly" draw heads for the animations I'm planning to start next year. The key is quickly. I'm not trying to be a detailed super artist. I'm simply planning to animate things and need to be able to draw heads and bodies at various angles quickly. And this is coming from someone who has very little drawing talent.

      @@MesserCreations Just re-watched this video. You forgot one angle and I can't seem to find it anywhere. What about the direction where the head is at a 3/4ths of an angle facing away from us? An angle where you can still see part of one eye and the side of the nose while the head is facing away? I'm having a rough time trying to visualize it using the loomis method.

    I am gratified that not only do you, a professional artist, also use a compass to draw a circle, but you're using the same Helix compass I use :) Any suggestions on how to do the side plane on the straight on and 3/4 views? Particularly the straight on, I can never get them the same size and one side forever looks wonky.

    • @MesserCreations
      @MesserCreations  2 роки тому +1

      It’s a really nice compass :) hmm as far as getting those lines straight I struggled with that as well. You could try to use a ruler stick or you can try and just draw a lot of them in your sketchbook and build up your muscle memory. Either way will be beneficial. Hope that helps? Take care! 😊🙌🏻

    LOVE LOVE LOVE this one. No extraneous information and babble we don't need. Really straight forward, calm voice, super clear. Thank you. I have an A3 page full of little Loomis heads and I'm going to keep going until I don't have to think about it. One question. If you are trying to draw the circles freehand (ie not measuring with the set of compass) then how do you know what proportion the ovals are going to be? Are we trying to get a square into four equal squares? Many thanks. Oh yes, I'm doing your course over on Skillshare as well. I've been a member there for quite a few years now and love it. 😊

    • @MesserCreations
      @MesserCreations  Рік тому

      Hey Beverley! That’s it, just draw as many as you possibly can. It’s all about muscle memory and getting completely comfortable with the basic structure of a head. To answer your question, most all ovals are going to be the same size roughly. The top of the oval lines up with the hairline so you can gage where the top of your oval will be based on the reference in question. I would not recommend blocks and rectangles unless that is what makes sense for you. I will be uploading more classes to my Skillshare in the coming weeks where I will be drawing basic features and showing how you can place them on certain heads all with references. Thanks for being a part of the MC fam. Hope that answered your question? Take care 😊🙌🏻

    Hi there! I am so excited to find you. But I am concerned that this is a year old. are you still doing your awesome tutorials? I pray you are. You have such a sweet, calm, about you and your tone takes the fear out of even trying the Loomis method. I am 78 years young and wondering where YOU have been allllll my life on my small art journey? Please keep making videos. and thank you so much for making these.

      Hey Diana, Yes I am! I have a ton of step by step drawing tutorial videos here on my UA-cam channel. I also have exclusive content available on my Skillshare channel. Here is a link to sign up if you are interested skl.sh/3TTQMWs My Skillshare is where I go into depth teaching about how to draw the Loomis head with reference photos. It is much more digestible than UA-cam, and you can upload a project at the end of the class's too. Regardless if you sign up for Skillshare or not I am glad that you found the channel and I hope it helps you on your journey :) Take care!

      你如此的年齡還在學習繪畫讓我感動,雖然我比你小二十歲。你有什麼蠻好的學習經驗嗎?老師的講解很清晰,我會繼續學習這基本練習,謝謝你們。通過翻譯我能明白,雖然語言不同。

    hi this video is amazing, thanks for doing it.
    I have a question if you don't mind.
    I'm a bit perplexed by your front views in line 2 and 3.. Shouldn't the features align ? seems to me that on those view you compressed the length of the face.. Is it me missing something out ? I mean .. why for example the chin in front view is not at all at the same vertical place as it is in profile views ?
    If you can find the time to explain, it would help a lot .
    In any case so happy i found this channel, instant subscribe :)

    I don't why I'm confused, maybe because I'm a begginer but I have a stupid question. In the straight on position ( the third one) where do you put the lips? Those cheek bones are taking most of the face so there's not much space for his lips. I'm sure I'm understandig it wrong tho.
    I tried watching other videos but I didn't see them drawing the cheek bones so I couldn't find my answer. Would please fix me and tell me where I'm wrong? Thank you!

    • @MesserCreations
      @MesserCreations  Рік тому

      Great question! So the Loomis head is meant to be a general framework. So say for example this class was meant to teach you how the Loomis head itself is constructed, but if you were going to use it for an actual portrait drawing you would draw it with a very light pressure control so you could erase most of it and have it show through very lightly as you draw in the features, build your values, then add your details. Have I answered your question?
