Not a very good instructional video. You must drain and flush the whole system, which is a simple matter; this method does not. Note the fluid in the reservoir is now dirty again after completing this procedure.
Sorry you didn't like my video. It did drain out a lot of the fluid into the container. The fluid was pretty new and the filter swap fixed my issue, but that's a good tip to add all new fluids in.
Turkey baster is an awesome idea! Gotta go get one now!
A very cheap way to extract fluids from the reservoir!
I've been using this technique for a while now for different fluids in reservoirs and it works very well!
Hi..I install a new power steering pump and new reservoir on my dodge grand caravan and it still have a hard steering..what can still cause this problem
If it’s truly a steering issue then is most likely your Rack and pinion. It’s your main steering component. They are a bit more of a challenge to remove and replace due to their location on the van. I’m sure there are videos on UA-cam. I’ve never changed it out on a caravan but I have on a number of other vehicles
That sounded terrible when you started up the vehicle! Mine wasn't that bad. Those reservoir screens don't last very long and can get clogged easily. I hate that you have to replace the whole assembly instead of just the small screen. Bad design Dodge.
Yes, they are not removable so you can't clean them. You've simply got to buy a new one and replace it.
@@MCFIXIT I was afraid that was the answer. I don't understand why everything is throw away today. They could have easily made it to where you got a new screen or maybe even about to just clean it!
Where did you get those long pilers that are angled? Those seem like they work really well on releasing the clamps.
Thanks for asking. Here's a link to a set of three:
Long Needle Nose Pilers - Set of 3- amzn.to/2RAsyEG
I just ordered me a pair of those. I didn't even know they made something like that!
I’m going outside to do this now, wish me luck.
I did it! Works great! I had to use my snake camera to see the lower bolt. It is 10mm. Also I used my shop vac, a peanut butter jar, and a piece of tube to make a suction chamber for the fluid.
Glad it worked! Great idea to remove fluid
At 10:42 the second waste jug disappeared and was not used after all without explanation. There's something very important you should know, here it is, are you taking notes....
Great instructions! Just what I needed for my Caravan.
You are welcome!
Thanks you for the help!
Happy to help!
How did you know it was the reservoir and not the pump?
Because I could see the filter looked bad. Also a pump normally just fails. You may get some wining but often you lose all power steering capabilities. After starting and running a while the issues would go away... sometime the sound would come back and sound bad but issues with steering.,
Hello
Did you add ATF 4 fluid or power steering fluid or is that atf +4 a brand name?
Thanks for the detailed process.
It’s made by many different companies. I have a link here to Valvoline. It’s automatic transmission fluid +4 but that’s what my vehicle calls for. Please double check your owners manual bc Dodge/Chrysler often changes this up between makes and models and years. Here’s a link to what I got: ATF +4 Quart - amzn.to/2Sxh3hL
@9:42 You said "we are going to use 'our other jug for THAT ONE", but then you bumped the first jug that was filled with the power steering fluid and at 10:40 BOTH jugs were removed from the video. Did you end up inserting the rear/bigger hose into the second jug and then starting the car and rotating the steering wheel for another five seconds a second time? If so, this is a critical step that was missed in an otherwise very clear, if not flawless video tutorial. Please advise. Thanks.
I can't get the damn back hose off. And I can't find where that bottom nut is, either.
I do remember it’s tricky. You may need to feel around for it before trying to unscrew it. You might also need some hose removal pilers if you are having that difficult of a time. Normally they come out with just some good elbow grease but occasionally they are really stuck on there if it’s never been serviced before.
I'm here because my power steering pump is leaking fluid and sound loud.
Is it leaking at the pump or on one of lines?
Do you have to change out the fluid or can you just put the old stuff back in that you go out with the baster?
I would highly advise against it. In fact, changing it out is part of the vehicles maintance and doing it when you change the filter is a fantastic time to go ahead and spend the money on the atf 4+ fluid. It’s not very pricey and will help your vehicles actual power steering pump out too
How the lower bolt lose? You mentioned a new engine being put in. Did the shop not install the reservoir correctly?
It had a new engine put in a few years ago. The dealership did not tighten down this bolt. It had the original reservoir still on there event though they put a new engine in it.
Do you have a link to the reservoir?

@@MCFIXIT Thank you so much!
Good, but would've liked this larger to see better.
Thanks for the feedback!
What is the small plastic line running behind the reservoir? Mine snapped while replacing my reservoir?
Are you talking about the black vacuum line?
