This is about her break up with bass player boyfriend Tony in the band. They were together for a long time and she thought they would get married. At that point, she was leaving her band behind because she had outgrown them. They appear resentful and angry. She was the star and they were left in the background. It showed in the photograph section of the video where they kept pushing the band out of the picture until it was only her.

No Doubt formed in 1986, having had another original lead singer, but when he died of suicide in 1987, Gwen took over that part, previously having ‘only’ been a vocalist, along with the other former members (one of which was her brother, Eric), before the ‘new’ band came together in 1992, where it was her and the other three new band members. The band went on a prolonged hiatus, but despite that, and despite still not being reunited today as a band, they have performed a few times in the past.

No Doubt have been one of my favorite bands ever, since the late 90s when they debuted... Gwen writes all her own lyrics, except for when she does collabs in studios. When she first 'broke up' with No Doubt, she put out an album called Love Angel Music Baby and it was phenomenal. From that album, "What You Waiting For" is one of the BEST songs I have EVER had the pleasure of jamming to :D :D The video itself is a real masterpiece, too!!
This is song is about her and her bf, the bassist in the group, and their breaking up. The video is showing the side of fame that tears groups apart and causes relationships to end. Thankfully they reunited and are still making music.
I always loved the different musical styles. I cannot believe how similar the opening and other parts of dont speak, are to Aerosmith's song Dream On. Holy crap. Just seeing this similarity 30 years later
After listening to all these women singers I'm not bothering with a best female/ male singer list as there's WAY TOO MANY awesome singers out there. I forgot about this song, brilliant tune and Gwen's voice is perfect. 😄
This song saved the band. And it about her and one of the members of the band breaking up. This is the gwen I like. Rocker girl . Her band was really good. REALLY GOOD
This song is about Gwen and Tony Kanal's break-up, the band's bassist. I think there is a "Behind the Music" for No Doubt - they have a really interesting history.
I may be wrong but if I recall correctly the band was originally a Ska band and her brother was in it so she hung around a lot until they asked her to sing, then she just became a member of the band. Then of course went on to do solo stuff.
Yep, that's Gwen Stefani; she started in the band No Doubt. They were a really good band! They were considered "ska punk." Gwen was in a relationship with bassist Tony Kanal (the Indian guy) for quite awhile before she married musician Gavin Rossdale and they had kids, btw. Now I guess she's with that country singer Blake Shelton. I think you are spot on in the meaning of the lyrics.
This song always kind of reminds me of "Voices Carry" by Til Tuesday. I can't explain why it does....it just does. May be one from the 80's to check out at some point
This is from No Doubt's third album Tragic Kingdom which made them international superstars back in 1995, totally part of my teenage years lol, this song is about Gwen's breakup with the bassist Tony, you could react to every song in this album but "Just a Girl" and "Sunday Morning" stand out for me, but the whole album is a classic.

It's funny that you know Gwen Stefani but not No Doubt. I'm old, I guess. This song is like 25 years old. It is a song to her ex, who is the bass player, Tony Kanal. Tragic Kingdom is all about their breakup. It's pretty cool when she walks right up and sings in his ear.
@@JBLETHALTV Another cute video is "Excuse Me Mister." I love Gwen. She used to be so different. Anyway, you would probably like the live version of no doubt's ExGirlfriend. It never gets old.
Per Wiki : Originally a love song, Gwen rewrote the lyrics almost completely after her break up with the band's bassist Tony Kanal. According to Gwen, "It used to be more upbeat, more of a Seventies rock-type thing. [When] Tony and I broke up... it turned into a sad song." [4] A live version that exists from April 1994 shows off a bouncy tune that has the same skeleton as the released version, but not the same urgency. The band performed part of the original song on VH1 Storytellers on August 10, 2000.
The message had a duel meaning .Message to a member of the group she had a falling out with relationship wise. The hidden meaning of knowing that the group is talking about her as well as mocking her behind her back and sometimes in front of her face. The group feeling the push from outside forces wanting Stephanie in the front just before they broke up.
Gwen Stefani is one badass performer and her band is awesome. She has the voice and presence and she doesn't use her body as a selling point for their music or videos. She's collaborated with some others as well. She did a song with Eve. No Doubt has great music out there.
Hey JB Lethal. I've been enjoying your reactions, particularly to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Meatloaf's I will do anything for love and I've noticed that you are enjoying the music of the 80s. If you haven't already heard it yet, I will enjoy seeing you react to Paul Simon's 'You can call me Al'. It was pretty iconic during the 80s and the music video is enjoyable to watch.
Gwen had been dating Tony the bass player and she REALLY liked him A LOT! For whatever reason he wanted space and wanted to chill their relationship. That is what the song is about. Tony breaking up with Gwen. Of course, this all happened just before they exploded on the music scene.
As others said, the song is about her and the bassist Tony Kanal breaking up. The best songs seem to come from tensions like that between band members. A lot of the early songs were about them. Fleetwood Mac did the same thing. Writing their best work about breakups and tensions between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, and Christine and John McVie.
Also, she, and they are best live. Check out the live versions. Tony is one of my bass heroes, solid, creative, and monster tone. Listen to the song Tragic Kingdom live. It will blow you away. They're all over the stage.

She had lots of energy.
Gwen Stefani is one badass performer and her band is awesome. She has the voice and presence and she doesn't use her body as a selling point for their music or videos. She's collaborated with some others as well. She did a song with Eve. No Doubt has great music out there.
Listen to HELLAGOOD by No Doubt please.
That was back when she was a true rockstar. Her boyfriend for all those years was Gavin Rossdale from the band Bush. Check out "Glycerine"
Gwen had been dating Tony the bass player and she REALLY liked him A LOT! For whatever reason he wanted space and wanted to chill their relationship. That is what the song is about. Tony breaking up with Gwen. Of course, this all happened just before they exploded on the music scene.
Good video bro keep it up
you're the best
Yes its Gwen! They were a very good band!
It's about their band. And her brother was in the band when they first started.
Man i have hundreds of songs for you to listen to man. OMG No doubt is amazing
I love No Doubt
The 90s man. I miss it.
You'll probably like hey baby by them also, good song
The whole Tragic Kingdom album is incredible!!!!
"It's My Life" is my fav No Doubt tune. Gwen wrote this to her Ex - Tony the Bassist. Heavy duty feelings happening.
"It's My Life" was written by the British band Talk Talk and released in 1984. No Doubt's is a cover -- a good cover, but they did not write it.
