  • India’s Forgotten Children exposes widespread trafficking, persecution, and oppression among the children and young people of India’s 300 million strong Dalit community. Meticulously researched, this documentary portrays the everyday lives of these forgotten children of India, whose painful predicament rarely reaches the headlines. Filmed in village communities around the centers of Bengaluru, Lucknow, and Hyderabad, and with the help of Dalit children interviewed in their daily life situations, the charting of these disturbing stories is vividly portrayed. With expert analysis from Indian commentators and human rights advocates, the film also reveals how a small but steady light of hope is emerging.
These three documentary films expose the systematic oppression of the Dalit people while offering practical solutions for healing and change.
    Director: Michael Lawson
Starring: Kumar Swamy, Ela Banerjee, Dr. Joseph D'Souza, Dr. John Dayal, V P Singh, Geetanjali Guptara, Dr. Kancha Ilaiah

The only way the Dalits can escape the Hindu caste system is for them to do what their leader, the late Dr. Babasahib Ambedkar, did almost 70 years ago; renounce Hinduism and convert to another religion.

The thing with hinduism, is that it is an ancient culture, that has a spiritual component, that you can take or leave. Hindu is a geographical term (much like being french or english) that has been wrongly conflated with being solely a religion, due to the prevalence of viewing everything through an abrahamic lens.
Its not necessary to convert out of hinduism, because it is perfectly possible to disregard the nonsense about untouchability, which is an ancient social ill, that can and should be rooted out in modern times, much like all the many other ancient social ills in cultures all over the world that have been and are being rooted out in the modern age.
For example, you dont need to convert out of christinaity to escape slavery, or convert out of being english to escape the class system, because slavery and class system doesnt define christianity or england, but is simply one of many social evils that took hold within these religions and cultures, and thankfully have been rightfully banned.
Thankfully, unlike the abrahamic religions, there are no fixed belief systems in hinduism, because it is primarily a spiritual culture of self exploration of the divine on your own terms. But unfortunately througout history, there have been many wicked people who have distorted and created wicked beleifs within every culture and religion in order to exploit and discriminate against the vulnerable and poor.
Later, many invaders, such as the british entrenched and codified the caste system within indian society, in order to divide and rule, and after independance, even though caste was banned in the consititution, the quota and reservation system of positive discrimination, had the perverse effect of keeping this abbhorrent sstem alive and kicking, well into the 21st century.
Many hindus throughout history have attempted to destroy caste for centuries because it goes against the concept of dharma and the fundamental belief in the divinity and equality of all beings, but they have been thwarted by bad actors within the ruling class during colonial times and post indpendance, because it enables them to keep people divided, by pandering to vote bank politics.
If it had not been for the political exploitation and entrenchment and codification of the caste system for nefarious political rulers, then caste is something that would have eventually disappeared by the modern times, much like the work houses and child labour and chimney sweeps, and slavery in other cultures.
Hinduism is not opposed to change and reform. It is a spiritual culture that has no hard and fast rules that is codified in one book that is supposed to be sacrosanct and unchangeable. It has many books, which are seen as works of wisdom of sages and gurus, some of which may be good and others not so.
It is a pluralistic system, which fundamentally allows for the exploration of competing beliefs, in a marketplace of ideas, where beliefs and ideas can be tested and discarded if bad, and kept if good.
Unlike abrahamic religions, with their rigid and totalitarian belief in one book, hinduism, like every culture in the world, has the ability to change and has reform in built into it, and it can and will change as poverty is tackled and education is increased, so will ignorance and prejudice fall away, just like in every society in modern times, when we know better, we do better. Hindu society and culture will also achieve the same if given a chance and certain bad actors who are hell bent on amplifiying and profiting off social evils, are exposed for what they are and take to task.

@@edres7563 First off your analogies are faulty in some areas. Hinduism is a religion while being English is an ethnic term. You don't "convert" from one ethnicity to another because our ethnicity is coded in our DNA. Second of all, I don't understand what you mean when you say that you don't need to leave Christianity to escape slavery. I don't know what you've heard but Christianity does not believe in slavery and slavery is not part of Christian doctrine. And in any event, slavery was abolished hundreds of years ago but untouchability still exists. I disagree that you don't need to convert to another faith to escape untouchability because many devout, upper-caste Hindus believe in the caste system devoutly and discriminate against the Dalits. Yes, Hinduism is a belief system that believes that all men are created unequal. It has no hard and fast rules codified in one book? What is the Book of Manu then? It is not a fluid religion like you think it is. There is no unward mobility regarding caste identity. You are the caste you were allegedly born into and you can't change that.

When I was about twelve years old, I remember attending a sumptuous wedding banquet with my family; it was given by some fabulously wealthy Indian friends of my parents at a ridiculously fancy hotel; from the main subject of the adult conversation at dinner, it immediately became quite clear to me (something of an inspired epiphany) that if you want to be rich - really, REALLY RICH - you gotta kill people...there’s just no other way around it...much to everyone’s dismay, I naively expressed this singularly illuminating sentiment right there and then at the banqueting table for one and all to hear; I’m now past fifty, and I’ve never been invited to rich people’s parties since...

This slavery should not be described as worse than African slavery. It is very similar. Abraham Lincoln was not for the Blacks but for the Union. I understand your good intentions with this information but it is also important not to share incorrect information about another’s oppression. Notwithstanding this it was very interesting. The take away is the oppressed need to stop oppressing the oppressed and unit with all those oppressed. Divided we fall.

You're right. It's impractical to compare the two in a form of "oppresion Olympics."I think the point lies in its longevity. No one should argue the cruelty of American Chattel Slavery. However, its practice spanned hundreds of years, while the caste system has lasted thousands. 15-20million Africans were stolen, and 200million Dalits exist today.

But India outlawed the Caste system decades ago and crows about its modern, egalitarian democracy to the rest of the world via such news services as Wion. Traditional hierarchies like this don't disappear unless a violent revolution like the French one occurs. The Rich simply benefit too much from the status quo.

The shame of our species is truly cosmic.
Humanity and beauty shine forth in the faces of the enslaved, as naught but ugliness paints the hard masks of the taskmasters.

Shame on you for even suggesting it. Caste system is a social problem not a religion problem. There are those who discriminates are not following the Hindu teachings. Anyone who knows two words Atman and Brahman blows away anything about caste. People who are trying to oppress people follow caste to stay in power. You also can’t tell a persons caste by looking at them. So how do you discriminate against anyone? Think about it. Politicians have kept the caste alive for staying in power buts not practiced like what these people are saying. The guy said caste is worse than racism.
