  • Her Majesty The Queen pay a tribute to Princess Diana on 5th September 1997

    The Queen's speech:
    Since last Sunday's dreadful news we have seen, throughout Britain and around the world, an overwhelming expression of sadness at Diana's death.
    We have all been trying in our different ways to cope. It is not easy to express a sense of loss, since the initial shock is often succeeded by a mixture of other feelings: disbelief, incomprehension, anger - and concern for those who remain.
    We have all felt those emotions in these last few days. So what I say to you now, as your Queen and as a grandmother, I say from my heart.
    First, I want to pay tribute to Diana myself. She was an exceptional and gifted human being. In good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness.
    I admired and respected her - for her energy and commitment to others, and especially for her devotion to her two boys.
    This week at Balmoral, we have all been trying to help William and Harry come to terms with the devastating loss that they and the rest of us have suffered.
    "No one who knew Diana will ever forget her. Millions of others who never met her, but felt they knew her, will remember her.
    I for one believe that there are lessons to be drawn from her life and from the extraordinary and moving reaction to her death.
    I share in your determination to cherish her memory.
    This is also an opportunity for me, on behalf of my family, and especially Prince Charles and William and Harry, to thank all of you who have brought flowers, sent messages, and paid your respects in so many ways to a remarkable person.
    These acts of kindness have been a huge source of help and comfort.
    Our thoughts are also with Diana's family and the families of those who died with her. I know that they too have drawn strength from what has happened since last weekend, as they seek to heal their sorrow and then to face the future without a loved one. I hope that tomorrow we can all, wherever we are, join in expressing our grief at Diana's loss, and gratitude for her all-too-short life. It is a chance to show to the whole world the British nation united in grief and respect.
    May those who died rest in peace and may we, each and every one of us, thank God for someone who made many, many people happy.
    Queen Elizabeth II

    People on here are so harsh towards the Queen. It's her son and his mistress whom he married who you should be hating. The Queen acted in her best judgement when she took Harry and William away from the palace and hid them away from the public, people would be harassing them none stop and they wouldn't of been able to breathe let alone grieve. When you grieve you like to keep what you're feeling to yourself and get on with things, not have people reminding you that you're grieving. I am saddened by Diana's death and find her treatment tragic, but I for one don't blame the Queen.

      I agree with you....She was so jealous of Diana because all the people had grown attached to Diana and learned to love her because she was not that snobbish stand off crap head like they had grown used to....the uproar wanted her (the queen) to grovel a bit because they understood Diana's place and the understood how much they hated her....the trip to the hospital proved they wanted her dead....only a few minutes and they stop to make sure she did not survive.....It just proved what Diana said was the absolute truth.........

    It's said she improved the last phrases of that speech originally written by her press secretary and the British government. Its true, regarding everything that must have happened behind the palace walls several parts sound very cool and yes, unreliable. Still the pure fact that she, the queen, stood their and showed her face is exceptional.

    You people are ridiculous. Who gives a shit if she didn't mean what she said. In fact, to me that makes it more amazing that she did it. She had no desire to make this statement but did it 'cause her people needed it from her. That shows great dedication. I don't blame her at all for doing what she did and delaying so long. It's such a joke that people felt so entitled to some response from the royal family that they demanded the Queen leave Balmoral where she was looking after her grandchildren who had just lost their MOTHER, and come down to London. The people of Britain were not Diana's family regardless of all the people's princess stuff. The Queen looked to her own and I can't fault her for that. And flying the flag at half mast when even the Queen's own father (the freaking KING) didn't get that when he died?? Please.

    • @MissMillsonxx
      @MissMillsonxx 9 років тому +2

      ***** They were entitled 'cause they felt they were owed a public funeral (even though the Spencer family expressly wished for a private one), they *demanded* the flag be flown at half mast when it has never been used for that purpose and Diana was no longer a member of the Royal family, and they *demanded* the queen return to London from Balmoral because of their grief when she was looking after her grandsons who had just lost their mother. What about *their* grief? They had just lost their mother and the country demanded the Queen parade them around in front of cameras at Diana's memorial lest they abolish the monarchy. People were sleeping on the goddamn streets for goodness sake. Yes, it is a shame she died and of course people will feel upset but to go to these lengths and to show such disregard for her sons wellbeings is ludicrous.
      In the movie The Queen, Tony Blair gives an excellent speech in the Queen's defense which I felt captured the moment perfectly. He said that this woman has given her entire life to her country and served it with distinction and then Diana comes along and starts airing the families dirty laundry in public (the Panorama interview was unbelievable. I can't believe she discussed such things with the public) and worked to destroy the establishment her bloodline has run for thousands of years. Of course she wasn't going to like Diana. Say what you want about the royal family but at least they don't mud-sling in public.
      Am I saying what Charles did was right? Of course not, he's a cad and I can't believe he was allowed to marry that witch Camilla, but I believe the Queen acted appropriately in this instance and it was the public that was in the wrong. I'm also not taking away Diana's many great achievements and her humanitarian work but as you said, she wasn't perfect.

    As usual, The Queen acted with dignity and grace. No, the Royal Family did not kill Diana. What killed Diana? She was in a car traveling at 110 mph (three times the speed limit) that was being operated by a drunk and that crashed into a wall. Why does Dodi's father seek to blame the Royal Family? Well, it is because he owned the hotel who hired the drunk who drove the car that crashed into the wall, causing the death of three people. Dodi's father is merely trying to cast blame to avoid his own vicarious liability for wrongful death. That Diana may have pregnant has nothing to do with this. She was divorced from Charles, and no children she might have had would have any effect on the royal succession.
    We must also remember that Diana was a shameless hypocrite. She did everything she could to attract publicity and then, like the overly emotional, mentally disturbed female she was, complained about it, which, of course, got her even more publicity, satisfying her emotional cravings and perpetuating the endless cycle.
    Charles is a pig, though.

    I was embarrassed by that moaning populace back in '97. That the Queen had to give this speech speaks volumes of British immaturity. To try to help people who never personally knew Diana Spencer feel better about their own emotionally empty lives makes me understand why the UK still needs a parental symbol in the form of the monarch. I wonder if the weepers still cringe when thinking about their ridiculous behaviour? It's unforgivable that the Queen was made to do this, but I'm glad she did - documentary proof of the stupidity of the mob.

I don't weep and wail over people I never knew. If people spent more time investing their emotions in their own families rather than celebrities - we'd have a much better country.

    • @97channel
      @97channel 9 років тому

      Kristopher Alex In essence, you make a fair point. But your criticism of other people's obsession with celebrity is undermined by your own interest in the same story. You don't rise above others, simply by having a different viewpoint.
      The sympathy towards Diana, which you condemn, is matched by your own sympathy towards the Queen.
      How many times have you seen the funeral procession footage? Sounds like at least two times more than I'd have credited someone without interest. And what are you doing here, at this video?
      Are vocal grievers pathetic? Or are people with more level emotions pathetic, by abusing that strength and ridiculing those who are less in control of their instinctive responses?

    • @krisalex1989
      @krisalex1989 9 років тому +1

      97channel Although I understand your point, I think you've misunderstood my comment. Taking an interest in a publicised event is quite different from obsession with celebrity. I don't profess undying loyalty to the cause of defending the Queen and I certainly won't be wailing from the rooftops on her passing. I'm merely offering a different perspective to the situation. I also think there if fine line between instinctive response and mass hysteria. I don't see myself as superior, but I do think that it's important to stand back and think about the reality of your grief before you line the rooftops for a dead celebrity. I don't vocally mourn those who I never knew - I find it disingenuous. I understand your point, but I stick by my own.

    What I don't understand is why so many people are so upset and blame the Queen. She decided to put her two grandchildren's well being before her people and I can't understand why that in itself would be a bad thing. Especially since the English are very much of the stiff upper lip, you don't show emotion in public, that you keep to yourself and grieve in private. I wonder if the Queen had not done that and had come back to London the moment it happened if she then would have been criticized by the public for not putting the well being of her two grandchildren first. By staying in Scotland they were able to shelter the boys from the public and what was being said about their mother and all the different accusations. Plus they were at this moment planning how to bring Diana back and going through the planning stages of her funeral service. Plus the whole outrage about the flag not being at half mass was crazy. When the kings of the past have died the flag was never put at half mass. I often wonder if the press didn't print all what they had of wheres the Queen and about the flag if all of this would have happened. It seemed to me that the press and media was the one that really fueled this out cry and rage towards the royal family and had no care to what was being said might matter in anyway to her two young children...for crying out loud Harry was only 12 when he lost his mother and there was no sympathy towards her children in anyway from the media. It was all about them and their lost when in actuality her children had more cause for lost and pain when they lost their mother. Both Diana and Charles made mistakes in their lives and trying to put the blame on someone for it won't change the fact that she died, it won't bring her back and in a way probably causes her sons more pain each time new theories about her death then only to find out nothing from it. I sometimes read peoples comments and its like they have put her on this pedestal where she is some saint that was perfect in every way and did no wrong. We have only been told their versions of the truth and what people who where close to them have added but were also paid for saying. We did not personally know them and saw what happened behind closed doors. Then all the books that are written when we have know idea if you can believe because some of their sources are not really creditable or have been paid to talk. If someone will pay you for stories and you need the money wouldn't most people end up making up stories and even outrageous stories because that will get them more money. So how can you truly believe what have been said or written. Plus there was one survivor in that car crash and he was Dodi's personal bodyguard. If someone truly caused that accident other then what we have been told when then why haven't he said anything. Especially since Dodi's father has been so vocal about the fact that it was not an accident. He is wroth a lot of money and could out bid any offer to get him to talk and not keep quiet by the "killer". So for me it comes down to the fact that 1. Diana was not wearing a seat belt. 2. Their driver was proven multiple times from different tests to have been more then 3 times the legal limit of alcohol in his system at the time of the crash and 3. In order to get the cars radiator in the front seat of the car when they hit the cement beam they had to have been driving up to 90 or more mph in the tunnel that has a speed limit of what 30 or so mph. But lastly no one forced them to leave that hotel that night. They could have just stayed there. playing cat and mouse with the media. I didn't understand. She was in the media stoplight for 17 years and knew that so why try to out run them when they would find them no matter what. They were safe there. Its not like the media could come bursting into their hotel room. Plus she also decided to let go of her police protection and personal protection. That was her choice and not the palace.
    To me trying to place the blame on someone will not bring them back. its been more then 15 years since she has died. By doing this it is more hurtful and harmful especially for her two boys who will be told and might read what is being said. Plus for does who get mad that they are close with their fathers I dont understand that. Why should a child have to pick a side both their parents loved them and raised them why should they not be close with him especially if he never showed nothing back love from that parent. Do you expect every child from a broken home to choose a parent and never talk to the other one? That is just crazy to me.

    I don't think it's a secret that the Queen didn't like Diana. However, I doubt she skipped with joy when she found out of her death. Diana wasn't a royal, she didn't know how to behave as one, she wasn't raised with the required brainwashing to do all of the things expected of her without question. And that is why her marriage failed. Thankfully Will was raised half commoner and has broken those boundaries for his wife. However to the Queen, Diana was a woman who divorced her son and smudged the family name. She probably felt the way you would if heard an acquaintances has died. Not many tears were shed but I doubt she was the happy "Nazi" some of you are accusing.

      Couldn't agree more. I think the same goes for several members of the royal family. Many say Charles absolutely hated Diana. Truthfully, I have no idea what emotions he felt towards her...but there is NO way he could have been happy that she died. For god's sake...she was the mother of his children and he seems to be a loving father, so I doubt he would do anything to hurt his boys. The whole conspiracy of the Duke of Edinburgh, Charles, and other members purposely setting up her death is just absolute rubbish. I know the Royal Family has to do certain things for a specific image, but in today's day and time, they would never do anything like that. Especially with the knowledge that maybe one day William and Harry would figure out what really happened, IF that actually happened. It's obvious Charles never had feelings of love towards Diana, but when you have two children with someone, there has to be grief at the knowledge that your ex-spouse has passed.

She decided to remain in Balmoral which is a beautiful place, the countryside and surrounding areas are just another world. Perfect for William and Harry to have escaped the press and photographers.

      The Queen is from a different era than Diana was, so of course there was going to be some friction in terms of how both lived their lives. The Queen of course wanted Charles and Diana to be happy, sadly it was not the case. Prince Philip wrote to Diana expressing his dismay that his son would leave Diana for a person like Camila. I remember when my father died when I was just ten years old. I did not want to be anywhere, I just wanted to be alone. No one knows how it feels to lose a parent at a young age unless they have gone through it themselves. I have been through it, and I know what William and Harry were probably feeling, just to close the door and stay away.

    very very carefully chosen words from a woman who despised Diana and who relentlessly and naively supported her son Charles 100 percent through every aspect of their marital woes. There is not a hint of true remorse nor does the Queen mention any such word similar to love in any context whatsoever regarding her and her families ‘grief’ over Diana’s loss. The Queen despised Diana for being honest and telling the world what a liar and a cheater Charles was. The Queen isn’t interested in the truth-she’s merely interested in self preservation for herself and her BLOOD relatives.

    I'm British and I can honestly say that I felt nothing when Diana was murdered in Paris.. no empathy nor sympathy.. likewise I felt nothing when there was such outcry over Elizabeth's silence after the murder, no feeling what so ever... Now this doesn't make me a monster.. far from it... I felt nothing because I never personally knew the woman Diana... I could also never quite understand all those millions of Southerners jumping on the bandwagon and showing such embarrassing displays of public affection to a woman they didn't know either... What I do know is that Diana was very well informed as a celebrity and this showed due to the fabulous manner in which she crafted and presented her public profile through the mass media.. Elizabeth comes from an era that died in this country around 1987.. an era of solemn respect and quiet dignity.. how real British people are supposed to behave.. not crying their guts out on the pavement as though they're on some sort of american reality tv show... Diana attempted to bring disharmony and disrespect to the Royal family.. sure she did all sorts of humanitarian things and blah blah blah yet she also spent a great deal of time on holidays, cruise ships, living the high life and being a celebrity, well beyond her brief as a princess.. in the olden days it would have been 'off with her head,' with full public support I might add.... yet this video showed an indirect mass public contempt and mis representation to a 'national public figure' for not showing reality tv style indignity by crying for us all and letting us all know she's with us and one of us.. SHE IS NOT one of us and never has to be 'with us' lest we forget she is our monarch and it is our duty to be 'with her'
