The Queen motber wasn't royal herself at all (her parents were Scottish nobles) but Philip was Royal on both sides of his family- his mother was princess Alice of Battenburg and his father was prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark.
His mother wasnt precisely 'royal', but certainly noble. It was some generations since any of her agnatic ancestors ruled in their own right (Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse), and even then would be styled 'Grand Ducal Highness', not 'Royal Highness' or 'Imperial Highness', and as such is not royal. Royal blood, yes, but not in any legal sense inherited. As to his father, he never ruled any country as king, but Philip's grandfather did, but as to whether that could be inherited depends on whos laws and traditions are used. The use of titular 'prince' was continued to Philip, so that seems likely, even when no longer claiming the Kingdoms of Denmark nor Greece.
@@carmen47freixas96 Philips mother was profoundly deaf. She was not well, Freud diagnosed her and she was given x-rays to damage her ovaries so that they ceased to produce oestrogen. This was all done in I believe Greece, not Britain I will add.
He didn't have to marry the Queen, and he didn't have to lose his career, he did it all voluntarily! Prince Philip was an INTEGRAL PART OF THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY. He was an active working member of the Royal family and he wasn't pushed or shoved about by anyone, he wasn't the type to stand for that. Give him a bit more credit, he was an intelligent, well educated, eloquent Royal who was part of OUR Royal family. His own family were the Greek Royal family who fled Greece after his father's brother, the King of Greece, was overthrown. When he came to England as a child he was sent to Gordonston school in Scotland and grew up more or less penniless. He wore the trousers at home.
Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth's marriage/life very much mimics that of Queen Victoria. Her husband, Prince Albert, was also called a foreign, German "Prince from Nowhere" who very much modernized the palace after they married. They both had to fight to be something more than just "the Queens husband". Nonetheless, both served with great dignity until their deaths. There are so many similarities between both men. Amazing.

Prince Albert as Prince Consort was de facto King because Victoria hadn't a clue about how to be the monarch. He saw the ministers and simply had the Queen sign them. The Prince of Wales is currently de facto Regent although they won't publicly announce the fact.
@ 41:59 you see a nun standing behind the queen mother at the coronation. That is Phillip’s mother Princess Alice (Queen Victoria’s granddaughter) who was a Saint in her own right an a beautiful human being. She secretly housed a Jewish family during the Holocaust. God Bless you Princess Alice.
She was deaf, stress out & placed in a mad house by her mother. She was a fantastic human being. Phillip's father was the loser that abandoned the family, ran off with mistresses. They were able to import or export breeding stock. So STOP being "sniffy" about the Royals. You are basically WRONG!
Prince Philip was an impoverished hanger on. He wanted to be in charge and be the power behind the throne. When he realised that wasn’t going to happen he consoled himself with affairs. He sounded an arrogant and self absorbed individual.

@@heytherejay04 Since way, way back (Henry I?), English (later British) law has been that the crown passes automatically down a specified line of succession. Usually father to son, or father to daughter (if no sons) (yeah, yeah, new law, but that doesn't kick in until William of Cambridge's kids anyway). The coronation is "just" the public recognition of the 'de jure' status of the new monarch, as well as that monarch's public oath to uphold the "laws and customs", etc. In some countries, the succession is NOT automatic, and then you get all sorts of fun things -- civil war, etc.

@@cupcakefairy87 I'm no fan of the Queen Mother, but I think it unfair to hold her responsible for that. @@athenarockabilly6245 I was about to leave the same comment. The queen mother had no royal blood but walked around looking down her nose at Philip. I think it was about jealousy. Jealous that she was a commoner and Philip was more royal then even her daughter the queen , jealous her daughter was now queen moving the queen mother out of her seat and jealous that the queen had a loyal and faithful man by her side. When people envy you and know you are a better person then them (not just status, but heart and soul) they will do what they can to try to tear you down . I always sympathized with Prince Philip. The queen mother had been warmly welcomed into the Royal family but she didn't appear to extend that generosity to others coming into the family. That was my gut feeling.
Most of the royals are cold to the newcomers. Princess Diana knew that the Queen Mother allowed Charles to use her private castle in Scotland as a secret love nest for himself and Camilla Parker Bowles. She was not always very nice.

She aware of the fact that Elizabeth had never had a boyfriend, had almost never been alone with a young man, and was quite inexperienced when Philip began courting her. Which he did as soon as it was proper. (She was 13 when they first met, he was 17.) Philip had no real money and no country. Call me naive, but every time I go to a funeral, memorial service, or like now, when a famous person dies, I learn so much more about them after they're dead, that it constantly amazes me. There certainly was a lot more to Prince Philip than I ever knew.....born royal, rescued, put in a fruit crate, was homeless, his mother became mentally ill, his father abandoned him, he gave up his royal titles, and married the most significant Queen (monarch) of the 20th or the 21st century, raised a family, for over 70 years. In one sentence in a nutshell.

It's amazing to learn the aftermath of Prince Philip. He is a person who had known the makeshifts of childhood being an orphan, he had known misery, war and poverty. May he rest in peace.
I totally get why he became how he did. So much adversity to harden him so young. Small correction - he was only half-orphan. His mum lived till 1969 I believe :) but since she was taken away from him and he was alone so young, I get why you'd call him an orphan :) God rest Philips soul.
The only reasonable, tangible misery he experienced was being banged up in Gordonstoun which was and is like Colditz Castle for children. As to poverty....get a hold of yourself, he has never been short of cash in his life. MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of people suffered in the war including members of my family. I actually rather like Philip and met him a number of times, I can tell you for certain that he'd laugh out loud at some of the rose tinted bilge on this thread.
What a handsome man he was and you could still the boyish charm and good looks right into his old age. None of his children had even a quarter of his looks. He was more royal than anyone of them and held an aura of royalty that came before he even married the queen.
The myth that Prince Philip somehow wasn't "first class royalty" is bizarre. Unlike Queen Elizabeth, her husband's ancestry is solid bedrock European royalty. Prince Philip is a direct descendant of Queen Victoria & Prince Albert, Catherine the Great & the Tsars of Russia, the German Kaisers, the Kings of Denmark and Greece and is related to virtually every royal house in Europe including Sweden, Norway, Holland, Romania and Spain. Prince Philip's uncle was Lord Mountbatten a great grandson of Queen Victoria, his Grandmother Victoria of Hesse's sister was the last Empress of Russia, his father Prince Andrew of Greece's first cousins were King George V of England and Nicholas 11 of Russia and his first cousin Princess Marina of Greece was married to the Queen's uncle the Duke of Kent. Forensic scientists even used Prince Philip's DNA to identify the skeletal remains of Russia's last Royal Children. Prince Philip is several times directly related to Queen Elizabeth sharing the same great great grandmother Queen Victoria and great great Grandfather King Christian 1X of Denmark. Queen Elizabeth's great great Grandmother Queen Alexandra of Britain and Prince Philip's grandfather King George I of Greece were brother and sister. Prince Philip was chiefly raised in France, Scotland and in England mostly under the sponsored guardianship of his British uncles the Marquess of Milford Haven and Lord Mountbatten. Prince Philip served in the British Navy throughout World War Two and was no "foreigner" to England.

I love when I watch these videos about Prince Phillip, they always talk about 'who was he' like they didn't know. His mother was a great granddaughter of Queen Victoria and she was born at Windsor Castle. Her mother, Princess Victoria of Hess later became the Marchioness of Milford Haven and she was a well known and beloved member of the family. His father was minor member of the Greek and Danish royal family. He also moved to the UK to live with his Grandmother and Uncle, and had a career in the British Navy. So they knew exactly who he was, they just keep asking that question in these videos for the drama that it adds....
Appreantly Prince Phillip met the Queen before she was even 13, which meant they knew him since he was a child! Love how the documentaries always contradict each other. She apparently feel inlove with him at age 13 but they met at prior family events 💀 ☠ 💀
Like some, she followed only what suited her, when it came to traditions, that is Elizabeth's mother. Possibly Elizabeth wanted her there at the Palace, she was only 25, and probably thought she had much more time before becoming Queen.
She lived in Clarence House, and her castle on the Isle of Mey in Scotland, but have you seen how big Buckingham palace is???? It has probably got a hundred or more staff. Why should she have moved out? She was a Queen too, and a very good Queen at that.
It’s good that the coronation was televised. The reality is, despite what the traditionalists thought, the Monarchy had to modernize in order to keep up with the times and remain relevant in a new world that was (and is) constantly changing, and basically survive. Time is change, and everything needs to change with it if it wants to survive.
That's more or less true. But always remember that ALL Sottish aristos can trace their ancestry back to Mary Queen of Scots; which includes the Queen Mum. The Dukes of Hamilton, et al, continue to think of themselves as more royal than this German lot. That's fact.
The Queen Mother seemed jealous of Prince Philip; she no longer could be the primary influence in her daughter’s life and resented that. Her husband was a reluctant king, not meant for that position. She seemed to feel so entitled, so domineering and determined to control.
And her 2nd daughter was the same way, both Leos. The irony that a commoner became Queen Consort because of her brother-in-law's abdication, and one of the snootiest members of the family.

I have highest respect for Prince Philip. It makes me sad that he was not given any importance or visibility by the Queen mother though he sacrificed a lot . They did not even let his children take his last name. Queen mother was very ambitious when her husband was the King n was jealous of her own daughter becoming the Queen...
After the Queen Mother died, Queen Elizabeth made a legal document to change the surname of her children who are not direct heirs to Windsor-Mountbatten to make room for her husband. Something we all understand. I saw a documentary about that here on youtube.

Oh? There’s quite a few missteps both professionally and personally. She wasn’t close to a perfect queen. In the end, the proof is in the lives of her children.
You're forgetting when she didn't make a statement after Diana got killed? She and the royal family were extremely unpopular after that and she had to actually come up with a public statement in apology. And people forget that they have been very unpopular until she became way older because usually people mellow out around older people. And of course what really made the royal family popular was Harry's dumping on them. People didn't like that
Just one awful example about Queen Elizabeth, and there’s plenty more, her praising the soldiers who opened fire and killed innocent civilians on Bloody Sunday. That was not classy, it was highly embarrassing, and not at all amazing! It was a mean, weak, and desperate thing to do, and heck it only took her about 50 years to see the error of her ways and to apologize for having been so heartless and cruel.
A most unusual genetic heritage . Prince Phillip was hardly Greek though . Born on a Greek island that he left when he was about 2 years old . Many of his relatives back in Greece though spoke fluent Greek regarded themselves as Greek orthodox in faith and were totally assimilated into the Greek culture and customs as they ruled in Greece as princes and monarchs . Most of them were originally from Denmark. Phillip may have had German and Russian in him as well . He was certainly a mixture genetically which is why he was so devilishly good looking .
Yes, until it was high time that the so called "monarchy" was kicked out of Greece by Greek sovereigns for good reason. They served their purpose for what it was worth. It was high time, however, that they move on. The concept of Danish, British and German monarchs is a northern European quirk and concept. Greece hasn't had an Emperor since the fall of the Byzantine Empire and they certainly didn't need a Royal family to take them through the 20th century.
Oh, for Pete's sake Andrew, make up a better story. They were NOT descended from Greeks. They did not speak Greek. Philip's grandfather (King George I of Greece) was the SON of King Christian IX of Denmark. George was ALSO the BROTHER of Queen Alexandra (wife of King Edward VII) and great grandmother of the present Queen. They were BLUE-EYED, BLOND LUTHERANS who spoke Danish and English (and provided excellent monarchs or spouses for monarchs). There was NO country of "Germany" until 1871. Philip's ancestors were SCANDINAVIAN not "German." Elizabeth and Philip are DOUBLE cousins; both descended from Queen Victoria and from King Christian IX of Denmark. Christian IX was born in 1818 and Victoria was born in 1819. Christian IX delivered monarchs (or spouses of monarchs) to Denmark, Greece, England, Russia, Poland, Luxembourg, Norway and Spain. If Victoria was the "grandmother" of Europe, Christian was in the running for "grandfather" of Europe.

Very nice documentary! I am not British, but have learnt abit on the history of the royal family. The queen mother was really a piece of work! She always seemed like a sweet old lady, but now we learn she was a scheming and savory old lady. Poor prince Phillip. He really had to jump through hoops to matter in that household. Its a good thing he was steadfast in his fight to be recognised, and not ignored. Those coronation outfits look heavy!
I have that same impression too. I remember when she died, and I had no idea she was so unpleasant. Seems the Crown does her justice :( that's not a compliment. Thank GOD ELIZABETH turned out more like her dad x
The Queen Mother loved her husband dearly and was very angered, on his part as he did not want the role of King. He only became King because his brother abdicated. She did, however, take her role as Queen extremely seriously and not least because the King had a very bad stammer which was made worse when he had to speak in public. When Victoria came to the throne, she was still a young woman. She had been under the thumb of her mother who had shielded and isolated her daughter all her life. That was necessary in the manner of uncles who were less than suitable examples for the young princess. Victoria exercised a break of sorts from her mother to establish herself as queen first, daughter last. Elizabeth, the Queen Mother had an agenda as this video demonstrates. Her interference with the marriage of her daughter and son-in-law wasn't rebuffed in a meaningful manner and likely the shortcomings of her grandchildren were only likely due to that interference she directed toward their parents. Elizabeth the Queen should have conceived a separation between herself and her own mother.
Queen Victoria over-indulged in her mourning of Prince Albert. Keeping his rooms and maintaining them as if he was still alive! Used her grief as a way to manipulate her cabinet. Treated her son, Edward, like a child, complaining that he was irresponsible, but refusing to give him any responsibility. The Queen Mother interfered in PP and PC's relationship, which in later years caused unnecessary issues between them
I agree! She had been portrayed posthumously more realistically- apparently she was a snob, a racist, and an elitist. Manipulating and controlling as well. Also her acting like she had been so thrifty when apparently she exceeded a large sum each year (she got around 600,000 to live and she had overdrafts of 4M yearly...something along that) and wanted the tax payers to foot the bill....while looking down her nose at probably half the kingdom. Yes she was lucky to be protected by the RP machine. Nevermind that maybe the antimonarchists might have that excessive lifestyle as reason to not love the monarchy/be against keeping the monarchy. They needed Philip's modernization for the current age in hope to survive.
Princess Diana turned out not to be the best thing that happened to the royal family when she wrote books and did an interview about how awful they are.

His mother was born in England, his dad was from Danish and German blood.
Princess Alice was an extraordinary woman.
@@gilliscolgan4356 They said that she was mad, only to cover up their evil, she was probably the only sane one.
The coronation is "just" the public recognition of the 'de jure' status of the new monarch, as well as that monarch's public oath to uphold the "laws and customs", etc.

She and the royal family were extremely unpopular after that and she had to actually come up with a public statement in apology.

His mother became a Greek Orthodox nun in later life.
Philip's ancestors were SCANDINAVIAN not "German."
Elizabeth and Philip are DOUBLE cousins; both descended from Queen Victoria and from King Christian IX of Denmark.

A very good film to watch is The King's Speech.
If this video interests you, you will love The Kings Speech.
The Queen Mother allowed Charles and Camilla to use her private castle in Scotland as a secret love nest when Charles was married to Diana.
@@sherryd3299 She was of the old, that a man was allowed to have a wondering eye, and the wife was to just look the other way. I have this feeling she didn't like Diana very much.
@@teresamokua9756 She was jealous of Diana.
"and the Queen was caught in the middle"
Queen mother: "we blood family must stick together!!"
Prince Philip: "elizabeth and I are blood family... Don't you remember 3rd cousins!?!"
QM:" oh dear..."
You made my Monday! Thank you!

That stupid old croaker. What a “See You Next Tuesday.”
@@tomkellycartoons Yes the Queen mother was.
Philip was far more royal than the old girl ever was , she was a commoner when she married QE2s father
I see no beauty in the Queen mother... her daughter, however was everything a Queen ought to be...
Yes, Philip was very royal. This is the reason why Queen Elizabeth's mother was so jealous of him.
Perfectly said.
@@renataostertag6051 queen mother seems to be jealous and not a nice person God rest her soul but she came across like that
@@athenarockabilly6245 You're right on with your comment Athena. Yes, she was a very jealous, nasty person. It needs to be said
in spite of her having been dead for almost 20 years.
The Queen was always very close to her parents, but especially to her mother. Margaret was mire the Daddy's Girl.
I imagine Elizabeth was as dutiful a daughter, as she is a queen.

One of the best documentaries I've ever seen!
Prince Philip, beside Princess Diana, was the best thing that could happen to the royal family.
Princess Diana turned out not to be the best thing that happened to the royal family when she wrote books and did an interview about how awful they are.
@@sherryd3299 So what? Who cares. Diana was treated very badly by some of the royal family. Especially by the horrible old queen mother. Diana was certainly better than CowMilla. You talk bad about Diana and you and I will get into a big fight!
@@sherryd3299 They were awful to her. They used her then threw her away. She provided new blood to a narrow family. She should have written about them. She was a lot better person than they were.
@@sherryd3299The family were envious of Diana.
He served our queen and country well in his life time thank you sir R!P prince Phillip
So many documentaries I have seen gave Queen Elizabeth all the credit for televising the coronation. She was immediately hailed as the modernizer and now I know that was false and Prince Philip deserves all the credit..
Thanks!
I still have my view finder from 1952, the slides are of the coronation. I still like looking at them from time to time.
Wow!!!! Wish you could post photos somehow on here. That sounds like a true sight to see! I didn't know such existed.

York Minster is the correct title.
Princess Alice his Mother was A Grandchild of Queen Victoria And she was born in Windsor Castle. She gave the last of her jewellery [she sold all her others to feed the poor]a tiara for Philip to have made into an engament ring. The Queen Mother was very scathing of her As she wasnt glamorous or a soceity dame. But the Queen admired her and in Alice's final years had her live at the Palace. And got Philip and Alice back together. He realised in his later years what a wonderful woman she really was. The Queen Mother although loved was really only a social butterfly. [A Woman of her status in life and generation]
I really admire Princess Alice. She was quite a beautiful person
