Since its release in 2008, the MacBook Air has seen some incredible changes. It actually went from being one of Apple’s most expensive notebooks at $1,800 in 2008, to being the most affordable, at $1,000 today. But none of that happened without a little criticism and controversy along the way. So in this video, we’re going to take a look at the history of Apple’s most popular notebook: the MacBook Air.

I love how low our standards were back in 2008.
And our standards will be considered low in 12 years too, everyone just want the best thing in the market
That was what was powerful back then. I remember when Quad Core chips were released. It took years for code to be able to fully utilize these new processing giants.
Hannah Banana I agree 100%.

Tbf Apple's UI for any non trivial operation on the iPhone is absolute garbage. Messing with the iPhone settings is a nightmare, moving files from and to the device is horrible and I could go on. Yes, apps work somewhat better and use the native camera, but is this really worth the headache that comes with ios, and the ludicrous iPhone price tag, compared to an Android midrange phone?
@Aexerial A pixel 4a 5G has updates for 3 years and you can probably stretch it to 3.5 years. It costs ~500. Is an all glass iPhone really going to last 6 years to make the price tag worth it, to the average user? Yes you (sort of) have software updates for that long, but is it still going to be in one piece by then?
And besides, thanks to the way tech works, spending 400 on a phone every 2/3 years on average is better than spending 800 every 4/5. You are a little behind in the first half, not by much though because midrangers are usually 80% of a flagship, but you absolutely smash it in the second, as a new midrange phone is usually better than a 2 years old flagship, and by a lot more.
@@TerrifyingBird bwhaha bro. Have you seen MKBHD's video about the Pixel 2XL? After a year it started having a bunch of problems. Same with the 3, the 4, and probably even the 5. Their cameras are good, but they have too many issues
@@Shanboss277 It was an example. You can take the oneplus nord if you want to, which still has 3y of updates (though 1 is security patch only), or something else from other brands.
I still have 2009 Air in mint condition. I love the design. The Steve Jobs keynote is a classic.
I'm using a mint 2009 air to type this very comment! I'm using it for high school, 2 weeks of G9 done so far and it has been working great! Just has to last me until I become a senior, now that is gonna be a challenge XD
Only 300 USD on eBay! What an incredible value, I have even seen the 2017 11 Inch air go for as low as 50 in fully working condition! Who the hell needs a Chromebook in this market?

@@paristath6773 You're welcome! Where's the question?
they complaining about no cd drive is basically we complaining about no headphone jack
No, it isn't. Using external drives or the cloud is superior to using tons of CDs, there is no way I would use CDs if I can afford the former. Wired headphones are in many ways superior to wireless headphones: they have on average better frequency response (i.e. They sound on average better), a better "sound per dollar" because they are cheaper to manufacture, they do not suffer from latency (which makes editing video on wireless impossible), they work with basically ANY device capable of handling sound manufactured in the last 50 years , they last longer because the only thing at risk of failure is the cable where all decent pairs have a detectable one (wireless pairs have batteries which have a 4y expiration date and cannot be easily swapped), you can actually use them on airplanes (bluetooth is usually forbidden on planes, you know?), they generally have better call quality because you can put the mic closer to your face, and a headphone jack also allows you to connect speakers (which you may have bought 30y ago and probably still work perfectly) and other stuff that may not support Bluetooth. Besides, Bluetooth technology is quite bad: there is a small but noticeable drop in audio quality intrinsic to the codecs used, and that makes it unsuitable for audio mixing. I could go on.
The tech is not there yet, it's way too early to cut the audio jack. Apple is shoving an unfinished tech down our throats for money, that's all there is to it.
And I have a pair of WH-1000XM3 on right now, I know what "wireless" means, it's nifty sometimes but not always the better option.
@@TerrifyingBird nah bro lmao. If people didnt stop using CDs we wouldnt have thumb drives or cloud data or anything. CDs suck. Right now, wireless audio isnt very good, but at least now manufacturers are going to be making better headphones with less latency and more quality. Apart from these factors, wireless is still better than wired anyday
@@Shanboss277 Even if Apple had done nothing, people would naturally stop using CDs once price for cloud storage and hard disks had gone down, like I did on my pc despite having a dvd burner. Look at what happened at BluRay discs. Remember that 1 TB of storage used to be like 2-300$, a 1GB pen 40$ or so, and the most you could possibly want to send someone was 2-3 GB.
Those problems I listed render wireless headphones absolutely useless for professional workloads, and the reliance on battery means that even good pairs have a 5 years at most of life, because the battery will inevitably go to hell. My HD598 are like 8 or 9 years old now and still like the day I bought them. These problems will not be solved in 20 years because it is intrinsic in the way the tech has to work, and forcing all users to deal with them irrespective of what they do is madness. Remember, you are not cutting it because you think people will naturally stop using it as better alternatives are available, you are forcing them to switch by removing the option. Airpods are great, had they just released them we would still see a lot of people using them, what I dislike is the idea that I must use wireless at all times even when it does not make sense to do so (and that I can't use my preexisting headphones without a dongle).
Besides, if you want numbers to speak, Apple was already a dominant force in the wireless headphones industry even before Airpods thanks to Beats, and had a huge lead in net margins over competitors. They basically launched a cool looking Beats alternative and forced all their clients to transition to wireless. They abused their dominant position in the market to force their clients to move to a market where they had the upper hand. Antitrust lawsuits have been filed for less. There was a good article on soundguys.com called "was ditching the headphone jack a good idea?" which was very well written, Google it up!
@@TerrifyingBird how long did it take you to write this comment lmao
do you mean us.
This was a good trip down memory lane. I remember lusting after the Air when it first released. Knowing what I know now, I am glad I never got one.

@@xalvarez07 I know right? Apple F'd around and made a thin and light that outperforms most gaming laptops and even a lot of desktop PC's.
@@captainuh-oh8355 yup and people get upset because they buy it for gaming, but that's not the point of apple laptops. It's to have a great and powerful device that will handle anything you throw at it on the go, for a long time. And be able to trade it in efficiently and affordably after it's time has came and went, which is truly 10 years or more.
@@xalvarez07 If the rumors are true about Apple potentially buying EA they could totally turn that around too. All EA games could then get native Apple Silicon support which would make so many popular IP's run better on Macs than on their windows counterparts. Depending on the games you want to play on the go Macs might actually be the best gaming laptops you can get for your needs.

Upgraded my 2010 White MacBook Unibody to a 2019 Air in January. Paid a little extra for the 1.6GH quad-core i5 and am loving it! Can’t wait to see what they come up with in 10yrs 🥰

I had an 11" Air, and it was by far the best computer that I ever owned. I wish that Apple had continued to make them.
This video felt like it was 2 minutes for some reason. This is the content I subscribed for.
*unfortunately your recommendation at the end of upgrading the processor and getting student discount is not true. Student discount isn't possible with specified models. It has to be determined models.*

I still can't forget how impressive the Air's first commercial was

Where’s the background music?
I was just thinking that
And with the MacBook Air M1 it is finally what I think Steve Jobs would have liked to presented in 2008...
80GB IN THAT THICKEST!!! We came a long way, I have a tb in my ipad.

I have a 13 inch Macbook Air and I really like it. My first thought from me and my family when I unboxed it was "how thin it is!" comparing it to another laptop's I had, this is really thin and lightweight.
I have this macbook for almost 2 years and it is a really good laptop, it's the middle 2015 version with 256 GB SSD and 8 GB RAM (before they renewed it) and it served well to me for my school homework and other stuff. The unique complain I have is the space, because it filled up fast. But the good news is you can upgrade the SSD or use a external hard drive and it's not a problem to me.
Correction at 2:50, remote disc also works on Windows PCs with wireless connectivity.
Edit 1: I expected you to address the rumors regarding an Apple silicon 12 inch MacBook which is said to be renamed as Air.
And you also didn't mention the short lived display output connector on the early 2008 models, the micro DVI, a MacBook Air exclusive interface, with the late 2008 models being replaced by Mini DisplayPort for support for the 24 inch LED Cinema Display by Apple.

Proud to have a MacBook Air!
The 2008 MacBook Air revolutionized laptop design. 12 years later, the MacBook Air revolutionized laptop performance with the M1 chip.
i dont get how people can complain when there “upgrading” from pro to air. your downgrading. the air is a travel laptop
Exactly!
I bought an Air in 2011 and my wife still uses it as her primary computer. Granted we aren’t using it for heavy processing but it’s perfect for our needs.

Only one problem: they are American prices. For me in Australia, it is at $1399 with the upgrade costing $150 not $100 and the extra tariffs make the price $1600 🙁

Informative.
I’ve always wanted and admired air.. but 😄 decided to go with more powerful and better MacBook Pro. First in 2012, and then updated to 2014 just a couple of months ago.
My Ivybridge i7 Pro uses Intel graphics, earlier model uses nVidia so it has a bit of leg up as well
I have an iMac air about 2 years. I still love it. It is so easy to used. I inherited my mom’s iMac air but, the battery is so dead and one of the keys won’t work. It is swollen, too. So I bought a new one a couple years ago. It works great. I got 13 inch model. The other one is 11 inch model.
Beth Peterson iMac air?
I still use CDs and DVDs regularly, I put that exact MacBook Air Superdrive on my m1 Mac mini, not everyone streams everything. Drives are still very useful for a lot of people
Streaming is the future lol fu
My early-2014 128GB MacBook Air is still the best computer I’ve ever owned. It continues to be my daily driver 8 years later on all its original hardware. I will upgrade someday, but until then, I’ll drive this thing to the ground!
Please make a History of "Why Software Updates gives us bugs and kill our phones slowly just to make us buy new Phones for money" (if this is true)
Not true
In my opinion The 13 inch MacBook Pro with the Ford thunderbolt three ports is the best value because it is a powerful computer, but still has the benefits of the lower tier model, and some of the benefits of the MacBook Air.
I see what you did there
For the longest time, Apple continued selling a super outdated MacBook Air with ancient hardware at full retail price.
Shame on them. I worked at Best Buy. Every time someone wanted to buy one, I straight up told them it was a terrible deal, get a MacBook Pro or Windows PC.
M1 is sensational. Switched to Mac from Windows and no regret.
How bro? The macOS is really bad, it lacks simplest functionalities compared to Windows! I really like the MacBooks' build but the OS is the deal breaker for me
I'm getting the MacBook Air this Christmas. So hyped!
I got the 2020 macbook air and i love it lmao. I upgraded from the 2012 macbook air

Now with Tim Cook... nothing

I use my MacBook Air to do 3D rendering like Blender. And when I bought it I’ve never thought I will use it to do it but thanks to the Thunderbolt 3 I can use my MacBook Air to do rendering.
I personally own a MacBook Air myself, it’s a mid 2017 model, I got it two weeks ago
I love the MacBook Air. Good colors and super thin.
I wish they'd make a MacBook SE with the polycarbonate Unibody design for 799$ with apple silicon and then a MacBook (more premium, uses wedge design) With a retina display and Apple M2
Wait what where’s your podcast channel?!
Shoulda waited a couple months to make a video on the new ARM chip Macs and put that in there! Betcha the Air and Pro will be the first ones they put out with Apple Silicon.

my mac that i actually use is a early 2014 macbook air 128gb ssd intel core i5 4th gen and 4gb ram and intel graphics hd 5000 and it runs really good
Today, one MacBook Air 13” 260gb of ssd with M fucking 1 chip is 1000$ (or 800$). It is FAST.
I think that’s what Steve had in mind when he said that the MacBook Air would be the future of MacBooks.

you have 2 videos about the history of the MacBook air one released 2 yrs ago with 11ish mins of content then you released a new video 6 months ago with just 10 mines and 26 seconds of content so which one should I watch first? the older one or the newer one? which one consists of more information? guess the only way to find out is to watch both of them.
