It's hard to put them in one particular genre. That's the point of being in VK scene, you can play either very heavy or soft soft songs. But as for Sukekiyo, I'd call them as prog-experimental rock.

20:45 _"thats why it's more than just singing, it doesn't feel like...it just feels like it's...being"_ And that's exactly why Dir en grey has been one of my favorite bands for about 15 years now. Kyo has amazing vocal range, but he doesn't really seem to care about sounding good. I mean for god's sake, he usually sounds horrible live because he blows his voice out on the first couple shows of the tour. But their music and his passion transcends that. Dir en grey makes music that is an _experience,_ for body and soul.
I remember reading somewhere that he told the rest of the band if he collapsed on stage for more than 2 minutes, phone an ambulance. Otherwise play without him Like the time the lighting at a Hiroshima gig made him pass out and he came to, just carried on singing
Watch the video for "Decaying Crows (Symphonic Version Live)" It's from the final show of this tour and he collapses at the end of the song. And just like Serpentine said, the band just continued playing while he laid there.
@@smward87that performance is wild. He clearly was pushing his voice cuz he felt he couldn’t hit the notes correctly that day and totally blew himself out, fucking wild to watch
Dir En Grey are strange, bizarre and sometimes chaotic, even repulsive, but the emotional charge, artistry and will to explore and tell a story with music is always on point with them. Just as you've said, it's madness but in the best way.
His range is breathtaking. Even on their earlier visual kei stuff, he’s always had that spectacular range. I’m so happy to have stumbled upon this channel. You might listen to their song Yokan with subtitles. He doesn’t scream at all, but his voice is beautiful.
Range isn't so big--naturally, at least. He's a proper tenor, but surely has unusual control over his vocal muscles that allow that degree of distortion and exaggeration...and, at last (I've been following them since 'kisou,') he's got a hold of himself. It took some super-hard lessons, like a couple of tour cancellations and trips to the hospital for vocal polyps...but, homeboy is nearing mastery. His voice, despite imperfection relative to recordings, has always been meaningful to me. The "coach" nailed the primal bit. Kyo lets the subconscious out to play when he's on, but knows how to hold the leash as well. Few out there like him, for sure.
Kyo has had vocal injuries in the past, but in general I think his technique must not be too unhealthy because he's 43! There are tons of metal musicians that have burned out their voice less than 10 years in the game and refuse to do any distortion or screaming afterwards, but despite some injuries in the past that he's clearly healed from, Kyo is arguably the best he's ever been, which tells me that it can't be too damaging overall.
Yeah there's a video by VoiceHacks where she analysed Kyo's screams, what she picked up was that his technique seemed about right and correct but it's possible that in the early days he may not have been doing them as correct thus leading to the instances of vocal damage
Cromm Cruach When the other person analysed his technique and said it’s correct, she watched a performance from 2011. So your argument doesn’t make any sense.
@@Saltcrystalis Yes, her analysis was of older performances and perhaps I'm wrong but it should be pointed out that 2011 was a good number of years after the band was founded and considering they've been making such styles of music since at least 2000, it still doesn't rule out that possibility.
@@Saltcrystalis Perhaps, I myself am rather new to Dir En Gray and I myself am not in much position to say with certainty about ones vocal techniques so I'm merely pointing out that it's a possibility that his earlier techniques may not have been the best which could have led to his vocal/throat issues.
Wonderful to see you do another Dir en grey reaction :) Thanks for the time you put into this! Because you asked about the health issues, he was hospitalised with throat problems a couple of times but the main reason behind those issues was just how much he overworked his voice. Between 2005 and 2013 they pretty much toured or/and recorded constantly. He doesn't talk much in interviews and never quite mentions how he trains his voice...I think that might become a pretty one sided conversation ^^', I never had the chance to talk to him in private though so who knows ;) I loved how you mentioned how much "into the song" he is; that it seems almost unrehearsed, because I really think he lives and experiences the songs anew every time he sings them...he always tries to delve as deep as possible into them without thinking about former connections to the songs. When he finds that something in the lyrics doesn't fit his current state or thinking he just changes it. I love that because it makes each song into a constantly evolving, living thing, you can hear it breathing through his voice. And yeah, the other band members are just as deeply inside the rabbit hole, concentrating completely on their own journeys. Honestly...they could become quite easily distracted if they looked at him all the time...(but the 'not looking' leads to members running into each other...or falling from stage....or not noticing that Kyo has knocked himself out and is not not singing because he just doesn't want to right now....^^'') You would make me the happiest of people if you could make a video for "Elisabeth Addict" from Sukekiyo (Kyo's second band). It's the perfect "show-off" song for his higher register and one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Do the live version from Persuasio (I can't send a link right now. Agreed, and we need to keep commenting this. I hate to be annoying about it, but I'd like to hear a professional analyse the way he makes that sound. It's astounding.
When watching Dir en Grey, it's good to imagine that you're watching a theatre performance. You are watching an experience that they feed to you through our mutual subconcious understanding of the primal sounds he makes with his voice. The band as well plays on the balance of harshness and sorrow with beauty and love, in and out of what he does vocally. I can't wait to see them live.
One of my favorite live performances by dir en grey is the song garden done at Osaka jo hall in 1999. I cannot watch that video without getting emotional, the crowd is so intense the band starts getting emotional as well it's really an amazing sight.

One day you might look back on this video and laugh "oh, how naive I was." It's really fun to watch someone go bright eyed and bushy tailed into Dir en Grey.
Thank you for reacting to Dir en Grey once again! I absolutely love this band, and I have to say it's so wholesome and heartwarming to hear not only your expertise on singing, but your take on the meaning and expression Kyo gives in this song as someone that may not listen to this type of music regularly like I do. Your take on the butterfly and how Kyo uses his voice to express this particular story was amazing to me as someone who spent time analyzing the metaphor behind his lyrics and translating from Japanese to English. Anyway, I've rambled on enough, but thank you once again I'm glad you could enjoy Dir en Grey with an open mind I really hope that you would react to more of their work in the future I'd love to become a Patreon as soon as I can

Really glad to see you return to Dir end grey. I like that you went over the voice, range, stage presence and any story behind the song, really helpful to see a bigger picture. You should check out their songs Diablos or 'Dreambox' (long title) to name a few if you come back again :) Kyo's a notorious introvert, interviews are few and it would take a miracle to have him be interviewed and talk about himself in such a way
Their lives are crazy man. It's not a concert, it's an experience for sure. One time half of the hall just scrambled to the floor because people in the front went crazy, never in my life I felt so many hands on me, helping me get up and never in my life I had a better soundtrack to my suffering. Diru for life! 😉
I used to worship Kyo as a teenager - he is the reason I have some kind of a voice "fetish" haha The things he does with his voice are just magnificent!!
OMG YOU DID MACABRE! 😍 thank you! this song relaxes me whenever i hear it, the musicianship of the entire band is top notch and Kyo shows off his versatile voice so much in this. more power to your channel!
This is my favorite song of all time, thanks for reacting it!! By the way the vocalist Kyo is insane and I love him so much! Plus all of Dir en grey's songs are sad, or at least have really sad lyrics. Anyways, great reaction, hope you react to more of their stuff in the future!
He is one of my absolute favourite vocalists and I'm so glad you chose this song! I've always wondered what a vocal coach would think of his voice :> It would be cool if you could do Vinushka and Ware, Yami Tote!
I'd love to see you do more Dir En Grey, but if you like Kyo's theatricality and unusual voice you may appreciate Sukekiyo, his side band. His vocal work in Sukekiyo is generally cleaner and less heavy, and uses a really different skillset from his work in Diru. Elizabeth Addict would be my recommendation for a really impressive live performance to start off with.
I've read that his range is A1-E6 and he occasionally does something called a whistle fry that can push him in to the 7th octave. The music can be hard to listen to sometimes but the dude has an incredible voice and everyone in the band is an amazing musician.
I like your reflection on the primal vocal. Dir en grey is my favorite band. Have seen them live once - in 2009. I really hope I'll see them at least one more time in my life :)
Kyo has fucked up his voice by growling and screaming and has had a couple of polyps removed, but around 2014 he started focusing on the quality of his voice. Because around 2005 or 06 he said in an interview "I don't give a fuck about my voice, if it goes it goes". But to me that just goes to show you how he can evoke the strongest emotions in music. Still one of my favorite singers ever, he can immediately just give me chills no matter how many times I've heard him sing, and he can always make me cry. BUT DON'T WORRY HE'S BEEN FOCUSING ON HIS VOCAL HEALTH A LOT MORE, Like take the Sukekiyo track Hakudaku for an example (Kyo's other band)
Actually he doesn't make the music. It is usually Kaoru. Kyo puts the lyrics to the music. What amazes me of Kyo, is how he is able to write the lyrics for a musical piece and decide how to sing it and perform it.
I would love to see you react to more Dir en grey. I really enjoy how interested you are of Kyo's range. It's nice hearing what you have to say about it.
Dir en grey has so many songs with a similar theme. And my interpretation has always been that he talks about a baby, first in the womb, and then after being born, but always suffering. It always makes me think of unwanted pregnancies and children with difficult and sad lives. I don't know if this interpretation is close at all to what he wants to convey since most translations are weird and I don't know if it's just how the lyrics are or someone messed up the context translating from Japanese to English. But I love their music so much, and I love what Kyo (the singer) does with his voice so much. He is amazing.
Seeing someone that hasnt been listening to them for over a decade like myself and many other fans, watch this and describe the feelings and everything that we have all thought about them is soooo satisfying as a fan. It just shows how brilliant Kyo is because he got everything across to someone who is listening for the first time. LOVE IT, Love them!
more I just want to add that I do not speak Japanese and the first time I heard this I didn't have CC either and it made me so emotional and tear up. The music the voice ...it just ...is amazing how well they convey what they need to through sound alone. I wish we had more of this these days in music.
The channel voicehacks does an interesting video into some of what he does. He's a very unique vocalist, I could never get bored of listening to him or seeing him perform.
There's no way in hell some of the primal sounds he makes are healthy. Kyo's been hospitalized so many times for all of the damage he does to his throat. But he knows this. He's very obviously a well trained singer and knows his limits but at the same time makes conscious decisions to surpass them for the sake of his performance. He willingly sacrifices his body for his art because sometimes the only way he is able to express the emotions he wants to express damages him. I respect the shit out of this man. You don't have to react to it but man, his screams in Mushi are so emotional. ua-cam.com/video/4JNsYqlIvzE/v-deo.html
I love Dir en Grey. Just for fun, check out the song 'Toguro' from the Uroboros album. The singer's vocals on that song are just phenomenal. That song amazes me. I saw them live in 2007 with Deftones and The Fall of Troy. Dir En Grey completely stole the show! Even though it was a rural, midwest venue and few knew of them... They put on a huge performance for a tiny venue. I immediately became a fan.

Not very healthy. Dude has been hospitalized a couple of times. He cut back on the weird sounds on the album Arche because of it. But, he's been doing them again on the new songs.
He has improved his technique since his run of hospitalisations and surgeries. You can hear the improvement in his technique in their most recent live show, like this one. His voice is a lot more stable through entire performances now where previously he'd kinda lack stamina.
Gina Most recent live show? This one is from 6 YEARS ago! He always has improved, that’s a constant process. It has nothing to do with his hospital stays; he had no surgery - that’s what he said. That’s why you aren’t objective but want to hear his “improvement” is due to the incident... seriously.

I like that you went over the voice, range, stage presence and any story behind the song, really helpful to see a bigger picture.
You should check out their songs Diablos or 'Dreambox' (long title) to name a few if you come back again :)
Kyo's a notorious introvert, interviews are few and it would take a miracle to have him be interviewed and talk about himself in such a way
I never thought I'd see them anywhere these days, let alone here. What a wonderfully surprising nostalgia trip.
You should see her other reaction. :-)
Hey! Here is my reaction to Freddie: ua-cam.com/video/LK2D_Ykn0-A/v-deo.html
i LOVE how theyre not just playing a song. theyre telling a whole story and you can tell exactly what is happening, its just amazing.
Kyo's voice is just beautiful in every way
Perfect summary of Kyo: "I just don't even know"
Wow. Very interesting take on the human voice. I want to study this further.
I'd LOVE to see you do more of DIR EN GREY !
Thanks to you for reacting to this and for your fans to suggest it. I'm going to have to look up more of Dir En Grey I think =)
OMG YOU DID MACABRE! 😍
thank you! this song relaxes me whenever i hear it, the musicianship of the entire band is top notch and Kyo shows off his versatile voice so much in this.
more power to your channel!
Please please please react to Elisabeth Addict by Sukekiyo. It’s the same vocalist, Kyo. You wont regret it❤️
This is my favorite song of all time, thanks for reacting it!! By the way the vocalist Kyo is insane and I love him so much!
Plus all of Dir en grey's songs are sad, or at least have really sad lyrics. Anyways, great reaction, hope you react to more of their stuff in the future!
I'm so glad I recommended you react to this, such a great performance.
Maybe check out dir en grey - obscure live at budokan
2013 dir en grey era was really something ❤️ thanks for reacting to this band theyre my favorite ^-^
FMF 2015: International TV Series Gala: Vikings suite, Trevor Morris
It also has that primal feeling
Singer is Einar Selvik from Wardruna :)
Here is my reaction to Wardruna: ua-cam.com/video/NTEtMOqZQV8/v-deo.html
I got to see of Dir en Grey live on November 13th a few years ago. Kyo sounds amazing live, and the performance was absolutely stunning!!!!
I think the high screams are called whistle screams.
Absolutely awesome description of crying & what it is! I may just have to rewind that and slowly write it down! Love it!
He also used to cut himself on stage.
Honestly, I am so glad he is taking better care of himself
@@sohtan1 Same, it hurts watching him live during that time.
You'd also love "Deadhead" by Devin Townsend live in Plovdiv! Powerful performance, strong and mindblowing range
Devin Townsend Project-Deadhead-Live at Royal Albert Hall is, in my opinion a better version.
Dir En Grey Conceived Sorrow live if you want an REAL emotional roller coaster. i think he legit goes through an anxiety attack on stage. it's crazy
Definitely love how you describe the song!
Makes me help understand the song more :)
Kyo's whistle fry scream is the best❤️🤘
That is a very impressing persormance.
And I really like how you try to understand to get the plot of the song. So nice!
kyo is genius in music, he can make some genre music, if you are dir en grey fans will understand my opinion
Actually he doesn't make the music. It is usually Kaoru. Kyo puts the lyrics to the music.
What amazes me of Kyo, is how he is able to write the lyrics for a musical piece and decide how to sing it and perform it.
the piece about the primal sounds is an important eye opener, and the way Beth says gives me the chills, awesome
I would love to see you react to more Dir en grey. I really enjoy how interested you are of Kyo's range. It's nice hearing what you have to say about it.
Your facial expression react to Kyo is so cute and funny to just even watch lol!!!
Love your reaction :)
OMG!! Another Dir en grey awesome XD
Pls react to "behind a vacant image" from arche at nippon budokan
This song is like the final boss battle song for life.
awesome reaction! could you do dir en grey's vinushka or tousei live next? :D
Tousei!!!
Your intro makes me so happy ever time
Rawr
The channel voicehacks does an interesting video into some of what he does. He's a very unique vocalist, I could never get bored of listening to him or seeing him perform.
You should listen to Dir en grey's Uroko and Rinkaku and Kyo's Sukekiyo's Elizabeth Addict and Anima ♡ ~
I love your videos
A lot of people can't get over their style or "extreme" music to see what Kyo especially can do. I appreciate your appreciation :)
Also, when you said "I think it's just being" you captured a big part of their appeal and probably what Kyo aspires to
Thank you for doing Dir En Grey again!! Please look at Kyo's other band as well, sukekiyo - ""Elizabeth addict"!
Was waiting for this one, thank you
VINUSHKA is also worth checking from DEG
I'm a simple guy. I see Dir en Grey, I click it. Also, I doubt this is health if you do it all the time.
The instrumentals of this song reminds me of Opeth during the Morningrise / Blackwater Park era
i see you react to Dir En Grey, i click like :)
I really REALLY enjoyed so much your video, thank you so much ♥
I love this channel because you understand the artistry
Finally!! I'm waiting for this so much time ~ thanx for react to this song
i love and respect your honesty that you dont have to havean "expert" explaination for everything that makes you a true expert in my books and you said "teach me !!!" wich makes you a seasoned proffesor as well this is one of the most beautiful arrangements ive ever in my life heard ...thank you im seriously in love with this band now
wooow.. next *diabolos* please!..

You should take a look at either Rinkaku (live) or Tousei (live) by Dir En Grey. Loved the video (sorry if my english is poor)
Indeed, I even love conceived sorrow live
Dir En Grey is amazing! I love Kyo's vocals so much!
Someone should give him a hug 🤣🤣
please react to the GazettE's ♥️
Not very healthy. Dude has been hospitalized a couple of times. He cut back on the weird sounds on the album Arche because of it. But, he's been doing them again on the new songs.
He cut back due to the content of the songs, not to “stay healthy”.
Kyo is kind of a masochist lol. He's gonna push himself as hard as he can to bring his artistry to life.
He has improved his technique since his run of hospitalisations and surgeries. You can hear the improvement in his technique in their most recent live show, like this one. His voice is a lot more stable through entire performances now where previously he'd kinda lack stamina.
Gina
Most recent live show? This one is from 6 YEARS ago!
He always has improved, that’s a constant process. It has nothing to do with his hospital stays; he had no surgery - that’s what he said.
That’s why you aren’t objective but want to hear his “improvement” is due to the incident... seriously.
Love this! You should totally listen to Vinushka, it's such an amazing song.
