"This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but he's a skilled human". Literally me every time I try to explain Kyo to anyone who will listen ahaha Ty for this! ♥
I love Dir en Grey, but a lot of fans tend to forget (as great as a vocalist as he is) he didn't always use proper vocal technique... He's been in and out of the hospital for damaging his vocal chords multiple times when he was younger, not to mention back in 2013 He was diagnosed with tonsillitis, and in 2009 with chorditis and laryngeal edema. But every time he got out of the hospital, his voice became stronger and he continues to take better care of himself.
Do you know if he is better at taking care of his voice nowadays? When was the last time he was very soar or admitted to hospital? I worry now and then that he might overuse his voice and damage it really bad, but most vocalists manage to come back after surgery or a longer break, though. He puts a lot of strain on his voice while performing live. And several times you can hear that he really struggles. It's been like that for many years. Been a fan since 2008.
Everyone should see them live, like for real, I saw them 4 times and it's never enough. Kyo is amazing, I often forget to jump and shit and just stand there, mesmerized by his voice. He is a superhuman for sure.
yo it's an experience. I've caught them in Chicago literally every time they've been there, ever since Korn brought them this side of the pond for Family Values.
lol you beat me to it, I was like why did they pick this song, Vinushka would have been way better for someone to look at Dir en grey objectively in the their prime. I still think Uroboros was their magnum opus.

Dir en grey - Rinkaku, Diablos, Macabre. Also Kyo's lowest note recorded without fry is A1, his highest without falsetto was a G#7. With fry he's hit as low as G1, and with falsetto he's hit as high as C9 (debated because it was a whistle note, but it counts in my book).
The G#7 was recorded, it's on Rotting Root. The C9 was during a live performance of Reiketsu Nariseba, and like I said, debated because it was definitely a whistle note, either way, that is still insanely high.
@@xerodelacroix5552 yes but the G#7 like I said was only a 1 time thing and can't really be considered into his official range but real none the less, also the C9 was more than likely an inhale which in sure you know don't count towards range.
He hit higher than the G#7 on some live versions of Dozing Green on the ending screams, before they played it like they do now where he inhales them. And that's why I said he's hit as high as C9 WITH FALSETTO, I know that doesn't count towards range, even though not counting outside melodic range is ridiculous, considering female singers allegedly don't even have a falsetto range (they do). Doesn't change the fact his melodic range is A1-G#7, which is absolutely insane for a male singer. Mike Patton, Axl Rose and Devin Townsend are the only ones who come close.
oh my god i never expected a vocal coach to react to diru. i've always said that kyo is an absolute vocal gymnast; the kinds of things he can do with his voice are downright incredible and sometimes unbelievable.
@@uwuloluwu dont agree with Kamijo as a big Versailles fan, he has a good voice but its no where on the level of Kyo. Ruki is really good but again not Kyo level, his growls and higher notes are not as strong. I might add Freddie Mercury instead his range is very good

Doesn't care about vocal techniques? I haven't watched any interviews but I'm pretty sure he could not pull this off without an extreme amount of prepared techniques. Imho Kyo has the emotion there but also excellent technique to back it up

Kyo's voice is so versatile, and it's amazing how he's doing so well even after the vocal issues he faced in his past! I'd definitely recommend reacting to their song Vinushka. It's masterpiece itself. As far as live performances, Uroko is one of the best when it comes to vocal diversity in a song, as well as Revelation of Mankind, Rinkaku, Different Sense, and a lot more. One of my favorite live performances of them was the symphonic version of Lotus. Zakuro, Riyuu, Ware Yami Tote, and more; they're more of the pretty songs and are just as amazing. Anyways I love your videos. Got a new sub :)
I would like you to experience one of their older stuff. Dir en Grey- Yokan. Nothing crazy, but everyone in the band is just constant, nothing stops. I think you will like how Kyo is singing back in that time.
Love your reaction and subscribed!!! Please do a lot more of them and their vocalist because DIR EN GREY is a very avant - garde / experimental group, they play death metal, progressive metal, nu metal, alternative metal, and many more so you can see their vocalist Kyo, doing many different amazing stuff with his voice!! I recommend Vinushka or Macabre the 2013 version or Obscure the 2011 version!!
It's interesting to see someone hearing and watching Dir en Grey for the first time :) I've been a huge fan for a better part of my life (gosh, just realised it's been 20 years!! You might also get a kick out of an old Japanese band called Malice Mizer. They're far more camp-theatrical but the singer, Gackt, has a really great (although much more traditional) range.
Awesome! Dir En Grey is one of my favorite bands and Kyō is one of the most versatile and talented vocals out there! With his other band Sukekiyo in the song Room 304 Tongue and Evening he reaches the highest note he can with those shrieks. It's outta this world! 😍
Dir en Grey is an incredibly versatile band, and all credit to Kyo. His range is all over the place (and I mean that in the best way) and they're fantastic live. Compare this to songs like Saku or Child Prey, it's almost a completely different sound.

Kyo is a small man, only 5'3/4... but on stage... he's 10 feet tall. He commands the stage, the audience, and Diru's fans are probably some of the most loyal in Japan... I count myself a fanatic.
I'd love to hear you do Daniel Gildenlow from Pain of Salvation. The song Iter Impius live is one of my favourites. He has incredible range and control over his voice.

Love this video, as a big fan of dir it's good to see someone who probably doesn't really listen to the band get genuinely excited by Kyo's amazing vocal talent.
Great vid. One of my favourite artists. Wasnt expecting to find Dir en grey on here. Sex Machineguns are another fantastic japanese metal band dripping with talent.
I'm sure someone has already mentioned this, assuming I'm not mistaken, but it's all the more impressive when you consider that Kyo is a highschool drop out who's Japanese is hard for even native speaking Japanese to understand at times - And entirely self taught!
Been a fan of dir en grey for 19 years and I'm always fascinated that people can get into their music after all these years and their big changes album after album. But i do wish they came to the states more often. Been a while since they last came by
@Beth Roars... I like your reactional analysis. That higher, "female" placement is something that evolved over time through much trial and error. No shade, but it took almost 20 years, just within Dir en grey, to develop that control. The compression behind Kyo's general style has increased over the years, along with his ability to sense his vocal acuity. Spot on with the emotional/performance art bits. The energy alone holds my interest after 17 years :)
no need for review, but considering the length and spectrum of distortion and clarity....this one is worthy of analysis: ua-cam.com/video/IrKAdFHrNZ4/v-deo.html
If you enter in the Japanese scenario, there a LOT of amazing singers, Tatsuro from MUCC, Ryutaro from Plastic Tree, Masato from Coldrain, Toshi from X Japan, Sakurai from Buck-Tick, Hyde from L'Arc~en~Ciel/VAMPS, and so many more... Hope to see some of them, nice react, one more subscriber!
iv watched alot of reaction videos by vocal coaches and yours are by far the best and immersive iv seen yet, im loving the videos keep up the great work! also you should check out a band called into eternity, song timeless winter, i can honestly say iv never heard a man with the vocal range that singer has, hes the most versatile and dynamic singer iv ever heard!
I loved your reaction. Kyo the vocalist of DEG, has a varied range of voices, from heartbreaking screams to soft melodies. please react to: 1.-Diabolos 2.- Macabre (I love the metaphor of the lyrics of this song) 3.- Tousei (The feeling of pain of the vocalist feels) PD: Sorry for my bad English, use a translator xD
try to hear Dir en Grey - Lotus, FYI: Kyo (Dir en Grey Vocalist) more extreme in 2010, at that time he got damaged his vocal cords, and he get vocal cord surgery after bring a song titled "Hageshisato kono mune no..." you can try to hear it.

awesome to finally see someone break down dir en grey. thank you for this.
Been a while since they last came by
Loved your reaction!
Maaaan dir en grey were my shit it 2008, gonna go listen again
Oh! You should react to Rinkaku(the live subbed version) too!
The energy alone holds my interest after 17 years :)
no need for review, but considering the length and spectrum of distortion and clarity....this one is worthy of analysis:

vinushka, rinkaku, aint afraid to die.. and more songs.
he is one of the best voices in japan.

1.-Diabolos
2.- Macabre (I love the metaphor of the lyrics of this song)

Red Soil or Dozing Green. Especially the latter.
You should definitely check out Sukekiyo. Kyo is the vocalist in that musical project :)
There is another singer of a similar style, that is also a very talented man: Kyuho Lee, from Madmans Esprit, his technique is from another world. I strongly recommend seeing him live, he's amazing.
DO RINKAKU!!!
So Happy to see Kyo getting the recognition he deserves!
