- Wha'll be King But Charlie by Alastair McDonald from the album "Bonnie Prince Charlie".
"Wha'll Be King But Charlie", also known as "The News From Moidart", is a Scottish folk song about the Jacobite rising of 1745, written by Carolina Nairne in support of Charles Edward Stuart (also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie) some time in the late 1700s. It is sung to the tune of "The Tidy Woman", an Irish jig. Lyrics for this version below:
The news fae Moidart cam yestreen
Will soon gar mony ferlie
For ships o war hae just come in
And landed Royal Charlie
Chorus:
Come through the heather, around him gather
Ye're a' the welcomer early
Around him cling wi a' your kin
For wha'll be King but Charlie?
Come through the heather, around him gather
Come Ronald, come Donald, come a together
And crown your rightfu lawfu King
For wha'll be King but Charlie?
The Hieland clans wi sword in hand
Frae John o Groats tae Airlie
Hae tae a man declared tae stand
Or fa wi royal Charlie
The Lowlands are baith great an sma
Wi mony a lord an laird hae
Declared for Scotia's King an Law
An spier ye, wha but Charlie?
There's ne'er a lass in a' the land
But vows baith late and early
She'll ne'er tae man gie heart or hand
That wadna fecht for Charlie
Sae here's a health tae Charlie's cause
And be't complete and early
His very name oor hert's bluid wairms
Tae arms for Royal Charlie
Here in Rome-Città del Vaticano we have the honour to guard Prince Charlie's grave. I myself paid my respects to him, on behalf of the Scots too
Even being distant to the this song by distance and centuries, it's very emotionally movement. Such a declaration of dedication to a cause!
So Scottish it turned my blood to single malt.
@Torin Jedidiah lol did I just read a fake conversation between bots XD.
Fuck off from this comment section will you?
Seek medical attention immediately
And crown your rightful king, for wha'll be king but Charlie....
My grandmother was a Chism, a descendant of Clan Chisholm. Our ancestor fought for the Stuarts even when his brothers sided with the Hanoverians.
I salute to you, brave Scot man! For Catholic King Charles III!
@@Confederate-hj2dc I'd still fight for the Stuarts... even though the heir general is more German then Elizabeth
@@anthonyreynolds1995 And there was also Sobieski of Poland blood in Bonnie Prince Charlie
My Grandmother was a friend of a Mrs. Chisolm around the beginning of the start of the 20th century, and Mrs. Chisolm sewed for Mrs. Pershing before she ( Mrs. Pershing and her daughters perished in a horrible fire in the San Fransisco Presidio 1915.) The Chisolms were friends of my Fathers' folks, and my Father had married Helen Chisolm years later. Chisolms were a good bunch of folks. Who knows how many of us various folks are tied remotely or closely by marriage,or friendship. The centuries since the disbanding of the Highland Clans have been a big adventure as well.
@@anthonyreynolds1995 I used to live in Glen Cannich , the ancestral home of the Chisolm clan.

As an 8x great-grandson of King Louis XV of France (himself a great-great-grandson of King Charles I of England & Scotland via his mother Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy) via my mother, I would like to pay my respects to the Jacobite Cause and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Long Live Your Majesty King Charles III of Scotland & England, Charles Edward Stuart, may you live forever in our hearts. 🏴✝️💙🤍👑
So proud to say my clan was loyal to His Highness, Prince Charlie! The Atholl Highlanders, made up of the great Clan Murray, came directly to the aid of Prince Charlie. Clan Campbell of Auchnabreck would've sided with the Jacobites, if not for Clan Campbell of Argyll. Anyone who has Jacobite blood should be proud when hearing this song! Our ancestors may have lost, but they'd have been damned if they didn't try.

Why on earth would you be proud that distant ancestors of yours fought on the wrong side of a dynastic battle? What's to be proud of?
This isn't "my grandfather who I knew in my lifetime landed at Normandy and helped defeat the Nazi menace" or something like that. You're literally saying that you're proud that someone who died centuries before you were born fought in a pointless war over which nobleman he'd never met would be king.
@@kennycameron828 Hello kinsman! Fellow Cameron here, and loyal Jacobite.
my jacobite ancestors were exiled to the states with nothing but the clothes on their backs, and on my father's side they were exiled for being Presbyterian, and the rest of my ancestry is from England mostly from my fathers side, my great grandmother's family on my father's father's side is scot however

i'm from Inverness, my dad is from Poolewe and my mum is from Fort William. My dads a Cameron and they moved from Lochaber to Lewis [during the clearances] but my great great great granny moved to Poolewe after the events. My mum on the other hand is a Munro and they clashed at Culloden, after the English betrayed the Munros whom betrayed the Highlands and moved to Uig and my grandfather moved to Fort William 50 years ago.
How did the Munros "betray the Highlands"?

First time I've heard this. Why the f**k is it this catchy?
That's not a picture of Charlie! Minor detail as we will be getting our Stewart king anytime now in the most roundabout way possible.
Justice for all the Scots, Irish and French who fall at Culloden !

@@RobbStark_ well , one tries .
@@RobbStark_ He had a point though. There were many Scots on both sides. The war was not England vs Scotland. There were as many Williamite Scots as there were Jacobite.

Clan Anderson Here
I have ancestors from England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales who were recusants under the Penal and Uniformity Acts, fought on both sides of the Civil War, ancestors who fought on both sides of the Glorious Revolution, and on both sides of the Jacobite Revolution. I also have some German blood mixing.
But at the end of the day I am myself an American. And I, also having ancestors who fought in the American Revolution and were prominent members of the early American Continent, am far more proud of them and what they fought for. I reject the divine right of kings, as nobody is born to rule or to reign. I am proud to be born of the first Nation to declare before a candid world that it be self-evident truth that all men are created and born equal by ordinance of the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God. They are endowed by the same, to the rights of life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, amongst other inalienable, inviolate, and absolute rights. That means men and women, black and white, rich and poor, gay and straight, young and old. To secure these rights, it was declared by the Fathers, that as these rights are inalienable and come from the Creator Himself, not from any king or earthy power or crown, Government receives its authority and powers from the consent of the governed and not by ordinances of the same Creator that made His people equal, free, and in control of their destiny and pursuit of their own happiness.
God bless the mother lands of my forebears - the lands of Merry Ol' England - Dowry of Mary and Land of Hope and Glory, Alba (or Albany) - in times of old once known as Caledonia and Albion, of Cymru (or Wales) - the land of my fathers, and of Ireland's Emerald Isle
O Great Britain, may God forever bless thee.
And God bless my homeland- Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean- the Home of the Brave and the Free.
Sweet land of Liberty, O set in the silver sea, Made by Thee and for Thee. Let us Manifest our Destiny. God bless us evermore.
Where's the closest british garrison...
part of the arguments for the Jacobites was that the king they were fighting against were foreigners-first William the Dutch, then George the Hanoverian. which is supremely ironic now, given the Jacobite claim now traces itself to... Franz, Duke of Bavaria.
which would also mean that Franz should've been the first openly gay monarch in British history...
Plenty of Stewart Blood under different names now. Don't forget the Stewart Women who took the Blood to hidden places.
There's still illegitimate male-line descendants of Robert the 2nd Stuart
Royals are all inter bred, god some of them married their cousins!!..
God save the King Francis II
