Wha’ll be King but Charlie (Scottish Rebel Folk Ballad) - Sam Shackleton

- Busking an old Scottish Jacobite rebel folk ballad on the banjo beneath the castle in beautiful Edinburgh, Scotland. Sung in the Scots language, “Wha’ll Be King but Charlie” is about Scotlands 1700’s Jacobite king/claimant of the throne, Bonnie Prince Charlie, a very important figure in Scottish history. After the Jacobite uprising was defeated at the Battle of Culloden much of the Scottish highland culture, language, and clan system was lost and purposefully destroyed in the years that followed. I love this song which serves as a rallying call to Scottish clans and often wonder how different Scotland would be today if the Jacobites had won. 🏴
If you liked this song you can stream my music on all streaming platforms with the link in my below. Also, tickets are still available for my tour of the West Coast of the USA in May - get them while you still can with the link in my bellow!! 🎫

Likewise. I bought a banjo because of bury me not on the lone prairie by him. Spent a few years practicing and I'm still not close to this good! Thanks, Sam
Never been a better time to be a Jacobite.

@ fair enough, but YT seems an odd place to propose
This is awesome. I hope you record this one and put it out there. I would love to listen to you playing this stuff while I BARREL DOWN MY COUNTRY ROAD. o/// I am descended from Texan Scots who got kicked out of Scotland for being Jacobites, and your music gives me a determination to keep trucking brother.
Greetings from Canada! Just wanted to say that you have become a nightly ritual for our household. While my husband puts our toddler to bed, I put your music on while I tidy the kitchen, and my newborn sits happily in his bouncer listening with me.❤️
Sam yer the boyo ma laddie great as usaual 🏴🏴🏴
American here. I stumbled across you looking for versions of ROCKY ROAD TO DUBLIN. I've always enjoyed folk music, and you're very reminiscent of the '60s folk music that I would listen to as a boy in the early 2000s. I'm enjoying you sitting in complete darkness, sipping on whiskey and smoking my pipe, close to 3:00 a.m., which is when this type of music sounds best.
Mr Shackleton, another beaut! I can’t wait for another album.
Know you the song “Bonnie Charlie no awa”? One of my favorite Scottish folk songs!
Anyways, may God bless your heart! Cheers!
Love this song, love this version!
A personal favorite! Really hope to see it on Spotify at some point!
Well done Sam! I love your playing. I have Scottish-Canadian ancestry. My great X 3 grandfather came here from the Isle of Lewis in the early 1800's, and settled in Canada. I love Scottish fiddling, and folk songs.
This was the first song I heard by Ben, and still one of my favorites even though it is not an original for him. It had maybe a thousand views when I saw it 8 years ago and now at 10 million, wow! Now I have seen him and and Ashley twice and listen to all they release together or just Ben. My son was rocked to sleep with this song and now 8 still listens to it with me.
This has been my jam since you put it on youtube. Perfect energy an tempo for the song. An rasp in the voice. Just a great gritty version of an old rebel ballad.
The song also goes by the name "the news frae moidart". Just about all the old scots folk groups did versions. I love the Alastair McDonald an Corries version. Silly wizard also does a great version aswell as the McCallmans.
But this version stands on its own.
The other versions are excellent (I especially like the Silly Wizard version). But I love the way this version sounds, like this could be your (musically talented) friend talking to you.
@@alexanderbrady5486yes! Very personable atmosphere.
I was born in Scotland because my parents happened to be there at the time. Love this!

So good! There is something reminiscent of Hamish Imlach in your voice and I love it.
Found your channel today and in awe of how amazingly talented you are. Going to try to get some friends to go with me to your show in Sacramento!

I've really come to love your music over the last few months. I'm a beginner player who runs around in Clifton Hicks' circles. I'm working on a rendition of Lone Prairie based on your arrangement. Ramble over to North Carolina sometime soon, I'd love to hear you live! Thank you and keep the songs coming!

Come up to Moray!
A request: could you play "Wha widnae fecht fer Cherlie". Thank you from Galloway!
Just learned this on guitar. 🏴
As a Orange man from Northern Ireland, loyal to the protestant faith and all the revolution delivered us. I'd buy that man a pint, fair play, I respect true Jacobites if he is as such. 🍻
If you were to inspect the rank an file of the Jacobite army of 1745, you'd find the majority of them, aswell as some of the leadership, were non juring Episcopalians. Protestants. By the time the 45 started, Scotlands population was less than 5 percent Catholic.
Love my heritage 🇺🇲🏴🇮🇪🏴

Fucking brilliant. Thank you!
Any idea on when there may be a new album on the horizon??
Thank you!! Regarding a new album, I’m working on it now, but being completely independent as I am it’s been very hard to juggle releasing an album with touring etc. as a lot of work is involved to make a decent album & make sure it does well! Hope to get one out soon though, most likely some time in the summer!! Cheers!! 🤘🤘
@@sorleythebard That's the best news I've heard all year so far! I hope your touring has been going well. It must be wildy busy for you running the whole show. If you could add more Canadian dates we'd be glad to have you next time you're here, but worst case saves me an excuse to come to Scotland and track down some of my family's history and their stories. Nonetheless looking forward to your next release. Cheers!
Pretty cool. Now let’s see ya perform it in Westminster 😛
AYE... REUNITE THA CLANS!!!
Love your stuff! Have you ever thought about doing tutorials on some of these songs? Cheers from the states!!

Great clawhammer technique, your beautiful, wonderful vocal projection. Big Iron is ACAB though unfortunately

The masculine urge to travel to Liechtenstein and convince Joseph Wenzel to invade Scotland and reclaim his ancestral throne.
That is superb! What tuning is it in? More please 👍
Do you play a left handed banjo? Also the nylon string sound great.
Will this be put on apple music?
Any plans to come Manchester ways Sam?
I'll buy the pints and the food for the night if you come to paris
Didn't know Scott's like the banjo. . .
Good stuff. Do you have a link to the version of the lyrics you use?
What is the tuning my good man?
Is this in mirror image, or are you in fact playing a left-handed banjo?!
Great song and well done! As to Cherlie, if he hadn't been such a pisshead he'd have made better friends with the French, left a Jacobite bairn after him for the throne, and the world would be a different place today. But here we are 😅 And at least we've got good songs to remember the numpty by 😂🍻
Come to Ohio and I'll be there!
Great ballad! Ehi your five string looks like a Shackleton

Very nice version, I thought I'd heard every possible iteration of this one but you really make it your own.
