MOST DETAILED DRIVING IMPRESSION & QUALITY AUDIT: 2022 TOYOTA COROLLA CROSS - ENGINEER'S FULL REVIEW

- This is the most comprehensive review of the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross by an Automotive Engineer and MIT Grad, David Koichi Chao. A lot of details are being provided in terms of manufacturing quality, paint job, and body integrity in this review - also a full detailed review of the actual driving feel and impression are given.
The Corolla Cross is the "perfect" size in terms of exterior and interior sizing - not everyone needs a big truck like 2022 Toyota Tundra!

I purchased one a week ago. I absolutely love everything about it. I agree with everything in this video.
I’d like to know where you live because down here in southern California it’s been hard for me to see and test drive one
I currently own a 2016 corolla, I love it and did not wanna sell it, until I saw the corolla cross 😍😍😍😍😍😍
@@luisavina4831 I actually purchased mine from Cerritos Toyota.
Does it have “enough power” to quickly decelerate then quickly accelerate in “difficult” freeway merges?
I have to wait 50 days for mine.... What model did you get?
Did you find a good deal? Every dealership now wants several thousand over MSRP.
Thank you for the detailed review. I also appreciated your thoughts on the engine power. I have seen several reviews complaining about a lack of power on the highway and I wondered if they might be blowing it a bit out of proportion. It sounds like it is perfectly adequate for most people.
Had mine now for one year and love it
My wife had ordered one a few weeks ago looks like it will be here Friday. This really looks like a great little family car!
I love the unique perspective and insights of this channel.
Thank you for this really excellent video. Very detailed and informative. I've never owned a Toyota in all my driving years, but this vehicle seems to be perfect in so many aspects.
My first time watching this gentleman, excellent review!
I went to go look at the cross today. Wanted to get something for my mom. The back looks like a mini Sienna and has good trunk space for her costco run. Haha I'm leaning towards getting this car for her vs. Corolla sedan👍
I plan on buying one next year and your review helped me make that decision. Hopefully the dealer markup on new vehicles will be over.
Most underrated car..I ordered the hybrid
Thanks for this unique perspective on the review, really appreciate it!
i have the corolla cross with 2.0 engine. i use extreme driving style to get 5.0L/100km, which is 47 MPG. i never go over 100km/h, seldom let the engine go over 2500rpm when accelerating and hyper mill when ever possible. its a different kind of fun squeezing for MPG.
I ordered my XLE in November and hope to get it soon. Though its lookin like 6 mnths. Have had my 2003 Corolla LE for 16 years, time for a change and in this Canadian weather im looking fwd to AWD
Fantastic review 👍 Thank you! Can't wait to get mine 😊
Thank you very much for the review David. Definitely answered a lot of questions.
Thank you for the review. Excited to receive our unit next week!
I bought the 2024 model about a month ago , and feels right on power , also keep in mind ny daily driver is a 2011 Honda Accord with a 2.4 and I definitely like it
Thank you David for the review, this vehicle seems to be the perfect fit for me. I'm in the Palm Springs area, average 2500 miles a year. I've heard that the A/C is excellent & the AWD handel's exceptionally well.
Also the price is still in my financial range.
Once again my family appreciates all you do for the Toyota community!👍
Thank you for the thorough and unique review. I am considering the Corolla Cross because is is the perfect size. My only concern was the new factory quality which you resolved.
You're welcome! It looks 100% well made to my eyes, so please don't worry.
@@AutomotivePress David any info on the new cx-50? Thanks
@@Gleeleeglee Yes that's coming very soon...
@9:08 i would have loved to hear the sound it makes with the first gear and then switching to cvt
Hi David love your channel and perspective. It would be great to add a decibel meter when reviewing your cars.
Good suggestion, thank you!
David, I get a little choked up remembering our very own, made in Canada Matrix when I see the Cross. Unlike the Matrix and the 'Matrix with a fake moustache Pontiac Vibe', this Cross has no fold-forward front passenger seat. That feature made the Matrix so handy for carrying large items like ladders or 2X4s. As an engineer, would you please explain why that amazing feature has been dropped from 99.9% of today's CUVs and hatches? As far as I know, only Daewoo built Chevy and Buick CUVs offer that feature today. Getting back to the Cross, I urge buyers to wait for the upcoming Hybrid which will save a fortune in gas. On that Hybrid, in your opinion would Toyota's 2.5 Hybrid system get the same or better mpg than the expected 2.0 while offering much more power? As the Cross weighs and costs about the same as a base Camry, wouldn't the 2.5 engine be a better option for the non-Hybrid Cross? You speculated about a possible 'GR' Corolla Cross but a Cross with a Camry powertrain would be GReat enough for me 🙂 Lastly, I can't accept the Torture Beam Rear Suspension® on the FWD model. It is very disappointing to see such blatant cost cutting on a new TNGA car.
@@bugsyboy5323 I drive a 2005 manual Vibe with the same feature. I always carry a small tarp inside to protect the dashboard if it is loaded with longer items. As far as I remember, the PT Cruiser was the first car with the fold-forward seat. I believe the Dodge Caliber offered it as well. My Vibe has just 195,000 km . This summer it was taken to Krown for the 17th time . It gets one coat of paste wax a year and is parked in the garage so today it looks just about as good as new. The engine and transmission have been protected with Amsoil top spec lubricants since the first service interval was reached and are also as good as new. I hope by the time it needs to be replaced, I can buy a zero emissions compact wagon with a manual transmission ;-)
David, always love your presentations. Can we order the CROSS with a 6SPD manual like in the sedan? I have a 2003 Corolla 5spd, but I’m really liking the CROSS.
Thank you! Unfortunately manual tranny isn't avail for the Corolla Cross in the US or Canada
Had Toyota Matrix before trading up to Rav4. I see going to Toyota Cross in future as this would fit our neeeds. Good review & like all parts of review . Road test missing from many reviews so your feedback sealed the deal to check it out myself. 🇨🇦😎👍
Any thoughts about the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid?
Hello David, I'm six months late on this review but Im looking for a daily driver, 3 to 5 thousand miles a year vehicle and this one looks like a winner.
AWD definitely what I want.
I don't want or need a turbocharged engine, something more to break down the road IMO. As for a Hybrid, I have to pass, I'm old school, this configuration with the AWD is all that I need!
Agree 100%
TWO YES. I am from malaysia. Certain spec might differ for asian market. NA engine is still my main choice for durability and peace of mind especially if it carries the corolla brand name. Expect to receive my car in a few days.
Hi. As a paint expert do you believe the white pearl color is better over years than the standard white? Tnks
I will get this corolla for sure. I already have a 2019 rav 4. They styled this car perfectly. My wife can keep the rav4, unwell drive the corolla suv, cross.
Great review. Only wish I can see is that there should be more torque at low to mid RPM for better acceleration/safer passing left of center line of slower vehicles, power seats on front passenger seat, up and down adjustable lumbar support on driver's seat, driver's seat memory and power folding mirrors at least on the XLE trim. All vehicles should come with an under hood blanket/sound insulator as added on the 2nd year (2020) of the current Rav4 generation. I will be looking at this when I need to replace my 17 year old Corolla that is still driving like new. So I just saw one at the dealership today. Not allowed to drive it due to Covid. I'm 5'10" tall and with winter boots on with a slight 1/2" sole, my head would barely touch the rear liftgate when opened. I will now look more at getting the Rav4 because I do not want to slouch everytime the liftgate is open and I will likely forget from time to time and hit my head.
Have had a 1983 Tercel 4wd and 1988 Corolla Alltrac Wagons before that were also this size. Great cars and am looking forward to the Corolla Cross in Hybrid form to be sold here in Australia soon.
Excellent review all around!
Thank you kindly!
I'm happy that these are available without all-wheel drive, push button start, and stop/start mode at a stop light.
That's said I would consider getting one if I could also get it without CVT transmission, electric power steering, electric water pump, decoupler pulley alternator, fly-by-wire, TPMS, and the direct injection portion of the fuel delivery.
What vehicle would you purchase at that price rate?
@@owascoshaw It's not so much price rate as it is equipment I don't want on my car. Seems the only way to get what I want is to keep going older so I can predate this crap.
Get a datsun

Thank you for your very informative video. We order one in Jan. and finally taking ownership Wed, From your video we have confidence on our choice,
Hey David, my daily driver is a 5speed 2000 2Door RAV4 . Zero rust in salt country Canada! Shifts like new still. Made in Japan quality.
The only car I would contemplate replacing it with is GR Corolla :)
Great to hear! Mine is 2004 and still all systems go. Nice to think it might last another four or five years
@@riazhassan6570 i like your 2ndgen RAV4 as well. I was thinking of getting an '05 manual to complement mine as well.
Last generation for manual in N.A.
Just picked one up last week. So far so good.
Great to hear!
first time to come across this channel , and 5 minutes in, just click Subscribe immediately . and finish thisvideo till the end, and did a repeat , just like David presentation very much. . and i am waiting for the hybrid corolla cross review
Great video. Nice to hear an experienced engineers perspective.
Thank you for this thoughtful review, sir.
How does the Cross perform when fully loaded, carrying passengers and luggage ? The existing 2L engine is already sluggish in acceleration . What about when passing during highway driving when overtaking ? There was no mention of corrosion resistance which is important when driving in a maritime climate.
would you review the 2023 2.0L cross hybrid anytime soon
Why is everyone so fixated on horsepower when there’s only one speed limit?
Actually being able to go the speed limit is something you can usually only do at 3am on a monday assuming you aren't in a construction zone.
After 41 years of driving without a speeding ticket, I take pride in respecting speed limits. In fact, I actively advocate for lower limits to reduce C02 emissions and make driving safer for all road users. The issue with the Corolla Cross is whether a small 2.0 engine working so hard will actually burn more fuel than an under-stressed engine (like the 2.5) under the same driving conditions. To go one step further, I was disappointed that the Cross was not an all-Hybrid model like the Venza and Sienna when it made its debut. I would suggest that a Corolla Cross with the RAV4's AWD Hybrid system would be much more efficient than this 2.0, more adaptable, more reliable and more appealing.
@@haywood4299 "being able to go the speed limit is something you can usually only do at 3am on a monday" - You must live in L.A. (actually, traffic in SoCal is usually moving either near a standstill or at 80 - 90 mph).
The speed limit is only a suggestion in most of the US.
Speed suggestion. If your not doing 10 over you're too slow. Slow people are a bigger liability than speeders.
You said heated steering wheel in the LE? I own the XLE and that option wasn't available here in the states.
Thanks David for sharing this review. Very interesting and informative. Nice looking vehicle.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
Cx30,Crosstrek and Corolla Cross I probably choose the cx30 more power and automatic transmission! Very good video 👍🏼
Thanks for the review. Looking for help, I have a 2017 Tundra with a front hitch so I can plow my driveway. Would love to buy a new 2022 Tundra, but have a hard time find a front hitch.
Just looking at the pics for the Japan version, and I actually like the grill on this one better.
I love the japan version headlight!!
@@hugejackman1427 I actually do like the headlights on the Japan version too. But for some reason the grill is not as good, to me.
I agree…it’s the GR Sport edition with that grill.
Great review. Awaiting my order for February 22nd. Made at the Toyota Prospecton plant in South Africa. Blessings 🙌
That CVT is a deal breaker. I also never thought I’d hear the RAV4 being on the big size.
That gap in the hood is the same in the 2021 RAV4
Decided to get this one for my daughter 💕
Great review. Do you know if the actual suspension is beefier/heavier than in the normal Corolla even though it's built on the same platform?
Yes the suspension has been tuned specifically for the Corolla Cross
Can’t wait for a hybrid version.
Me too
Asia has already gotten the hybrid. The US should be soon. But expect to pay around $33k plus tax &fees
There's already a hybrid version
@@nkapila6 Just won’t be available in the US for a while from what I have heard.
The hybrid would be interesting to me - IF Toyota gives it more power than what's found in the standard Corolla Cross. Better fuel economy just isn't enough for me when starting with 30 mpg for the I.C.E.
Can you do the 2023 Honda hr-v?
Great review. I will buy in the next 12 months.😉
Bought my daughter one for Christmas an xle thought it had remote starter but it dosen't. Its still an ok car.
I think the awd is more capable than the competition and bang for the buck.
excellent video and channel sir
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the informative review. Do you think the Mazda's new SUV that will be manufactured at the same factory that manufactures the Corolla Cross will be of similar high quality?
Yes it will be built at the same factory and the quality should be very similar as they are using similar methods...
@@AutomotivePress That would be nice since I prefer the looks of the Mazda model, which will probably also be more engaging to drive. Thanks for your feedback.
Thanks for the detailed review! I’m trading in my 2008 Highlander for a 2022 Corolla Cross XLE-supposed to be here around mid-September. My first adult car was a Corolla station wagon back in 1993, and I loved it. So, I’m looking forward to the Cross. :) I really appreciate your engineering and design perspective.
Dee, I just got my Cross XLE a few days ago, and I really like it! The decision was a tough one, but the Cross won!
@@staceys1870 Thanks, I’m so glad to hear this!

@@lthomas5596 Would you believe it never arrived?! I got a Rav4 instead, and I like it a lot!
@@deemckinney1238 oh my!!! I bet ur enjoying the Rav tho! Atleast its not a CVT lol
Have you heard when these cars will be available in Canada? Our dealerships in BC do not have inventory yet.
I'm trading in my 2016 corolla for one of these tomorrow! Psyched to have more room for my bike and tools!
the MPGs on that thing YESSS ❤
Should I have any reservations about this new model, being assembled at a brand new plant? How about waiting for the bugs to be taken out?
I would consider a hybrid version of the Cross. Love the design.
I heard the Cross gets about the same mpg as the RAV4. How is it possible that a small crossover with a small engine gets the same mileage as a bigger one?
It depends on how the engine was calibrated in order to produce the right amount of power and torque. Sometimes larger vehicle with a more relaxed calibration can achieve good fuel efficiency since there are so many factors contributing to the mileage (it's not just weight and engine size)
Thank you David !!! How is the buying process of replacement of your trucks?? Have you peaked on the Maserati Quattro Porte??
On the other hand I will be @ Whistler on the coming January 2022 !!!
You're welcome! I've officially sold my Tacoma TRD Pro and bought the 2022 Tundra which is arriving in late December!
Question. On the Toyota site it says only the XLE has heated seats. Does the LE really have that option?
Toyota Canada has heated seats in lower trim levels. I think it comes standard even on the lowest trim. Not so in the US.
Do you recommend rust proofing for this model? I do want to keep a car for as long as possible so I am considering rust proofing but not sure if it's worth the price. Btw, thank you for a great review!
Krown Rustproofing works.
It's already rust proofed.
if you live in a Northern State or Canadian Province with snow...then the simple answer is Yes!
Either DIY with a few aerosol cans every Autumn and or Spring or reputuable Rustproofing Dealer every other year.

Excellent informative review. Please tell us how you feel Carola Cross compares to its competitors in the form of rankings. Would you buy this over a Mazda CX3?
Yes it's definitely more refined than the CX-3, but the CX-30 has better handling. The Subaru Crosstrek is similar but not as comfortable and Corolla Cross is quieter...
@@AutomotivePress As a respectful counterpoint, I've watched video driving reviews of the Corolla Cross, and it IS quiet at gentle, lower-rpm speeds. When you need greater acceleration, though, such as for entering or passing on a highway, the engine becomes *very* noisy - sounding much noisier and unpleasant than either the Crosstrek or CX-30, from what I've seen/heard (which, in reality, might not be accurate).
Ive seen one in person and its a good looking vehicle
Will there be an SE model of some kind in the future?
To the reviewer, I want you to know that that I really appreciate the professionalism of your review. Your review really stands out from the others. Great thanks for your efforts.
I appreciate that!
GOOD JOBS. THANK, I buy Corolla cross.
I don’t know , I have to question the reliability of the CVT !
Getting this for my wife.
I heard that this new CorollaCross is noisy on the highway, is that true? Is it the same as a Corolla sedan at 120kph?
When coasting on highway, there is no issue with noise. If you step on the gas hard, it's a bit noisy but to be honest not any worse than other small cars in this class. I think it's a bit quieter than the regular Corolla.
thank you for the honesty comments here. yes, it is not good for passing / racing but enough for my " sightseeing" style, so i have preordered a LE premium package one. hey, i actually hate the "Corolla" naming & its sedans & hatchbacks, LOL !!!
Yeah, I agree the name Corolla Cross sounds like a cheap SUV. They should have just called it Toyota Cross. When you tell your family and friends you got a Toyota Corolla cross they'll think what the hell is that. Lol
@@johnwigren4429 Just say its a new model. Most of the public has never heard of it.
My brand new 2022 Jett black hood is scratched and has a ton of orange peel very disappointed with the paint job also the headlights look out of place to the hood tons of space
Why does the Canadian Version get standard Heat warmers and steering wheel but not in the US? You have to get the 32k version for that! It's annoying. I actually just bought the LE Version I'm excited, but I am annoyed that a country that is only 3 hours north of me gets a better standard package for a very similar price
Because its COLD in Canada compared to the US?
toyotas for lifee
I’m 6’6” so probably not a good size for me. 😂 But nice video! 👍
I tell you what I DON'T like about it. We've had ours for just a bit less than a month. Toyota skimped out on the paint job inside the doors & the rear hatch. No clear coat! Just flat paint. I plan on complaining about it later. It's not what i would expect from Toyota. Other than this, it runs good for a 4 banger engine, a helluva lot better quality than our old Chevy Traverse.
I bought my Cross just about a year ago. How are you liking yours? I'm happy with it, but it's my first new car so...= ) I do wish the driver seat was a tad more plush.
Would love seeing you doing a Lexus LFA review
I would love to get one for review too!
How about road and wind noise? I heard it is noisy inside.
It's not any worse than other small cars to be honest. Engine is noisy if you step on it hard, but otherwise about the same as other small crossovers and small cars.
How does this in terms of build compare to CHR?
It's similar but CH-R is built in Turkey so sometimes show through minor imperfections
@@AutomotivePress I believe the Turkey plant won Gold for top car plant a couple years ago. Then again as you stated, Kaizen is applicable at all Toyota plants. I would imagine build quality the same. Love to see you review chr one day. Thanks

Cool nice car
Japanese version of this vehicle has a much nicer front design. The one for the U.S. market looks cheaper, clunkier & less-refined, overall (especially in the non-XLE trim). Not even a nice little exhaust tip for the top $30K+ XLE trim...WTH Toyota?
How worried are you that this car is being assembled in a new American factory? I really wish they built this in Japan.
I don’t know how a 5th Gen RAV4 can be hard to park. It’s the easiest car that I’ve ever driven. It practically drives itself.
