This but unironically. I really like this car because it so confidently knows what it is. It looks good, is priced well, is comfortable, AWD with ground clearance, fuel efficient, and reliable. It's biggest flaw is not having much power but it has enough for most people. Though if this had a higher power variant (like with the 268hp GR Yaris 1.6L) it'd be even better.

So many cars nowadays are trying so insanely hard to get attention with overdone styling, gimmicks, etc. that it’s honestly kinda nice to see a car so comfortable in its conservative skin. Now that I have owned it for a while and also road-tripped it a few times, I appreciate the Toyota quality and enjoy the efficiency, and appreciate the no drama. Yeah, I was surprised how botched the CH-R was - ugly, cramped, and with poor visibility. It was like they turned its styling over to the summer intern. If a buyer could get just as much useful space for thousands less money, why wouldn't they take it? My car pool buddy and I assessed this for our daily 200 km round trip commute, and in Northern Canada AWD is a must 4 months of the year. At the end of the day, it didn't make sense over the Rav4, when comparing LEs:
    Rav4 LE AWD : $30,690 (CAD) at 6.9 L/100 km (41 mpg) - HWY
    Cross LE AWD: $28,490 (CAD) at 7.1 L/100km (38 mpg) - HWY
So for $2200 less, you have less space, much less acceleration, less power, a CVT, and worse fuel economy. Rav4 does have steel wheels I believe... still.... I don't see the argument over the Rav4. I would also suspect that the Rav4 would increase that cost delta in resale after five years of ownership also.
The Rav 4 does have 0.6 L/100km worse fuel eco in city driving, however. At least the gas LE AWD. Now, if the cross was available in a manual AWD.... sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. :P

True, the hybrid Rav4 makes more financial sense than an AWD Cross, especially since the hybrid Rav4 gets better mileage both on the highway and in the city/combined which means you'll hit break even at some point simply by having to buy less gas in the long run. The hybrid Rav4 also has a CVT so that's equal across the board and not actually that bad in daily usage. The biggest positives I can think of for the Cross is that it's a smaller vehicle (the new Rav4 is WIDE compared to the older ones) and there isn't the additional hybrid stuff to possibly go wrong on you if you own it till the wheels fall off.
If you were comparing the gas Rav4, your MPG numbers are far off. The gas AWD Rav4 gets 27/34 (city/hwy) and the AWD Cross gets (29/32). Toyota puts the AWD numbers in the footnotes for some reason. Only the Hybrid Rav4 gets 41/38 (city/hwy).

Love the review. A few things.
I bought the hatch because your review was so convincing. I ended up buying a sedan too. Both XSE, CVT and 2020. I’m ditching the sedan for the Cross.
The cross is what the hatch should have been. The backseat is tight and trunk is small. I love the hatch and it looks 1000x better but more space and AWD is driving me to it. The sedan is the odd man out because it just doesn’t work for me. I need a hatch door for work and school. But the sedan is better than the hatch minus the hatch part.
The CVT is fine. If you go in knowing it’s a Corolla and that’s it. You’ll be fine. Both cars are at 60k + and 0 issues. The engine itself is plenty.
Edit: also there’s a hybrid version coming. If that comes with AWD it’ll be a no brainer over the hatch and sedan.

It kinda does fake shifts kinda like the Corolla sedan does~ If you want that kinda CVT, go to the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross or the older Mitsubishi Outlander Sport :D And yeah, those who think CVTs need fake shifts, I can understand, but a CVT is meant to be held at redline, and it's supposed to sound like that, like you said. Plus, most people won't even care what a torque-converter or CVT automatic transmission is, and they'll think it's the same~ But the great thing is that this CVT has a physical first gear and responds well~

You guys do great reviews, you tell it like it is. The shoppers for this car are not taking it to the "Ring" to do hot laps.
Just leased the LE AWD, since my 2014 Kia Soul was totaled couple of weeks ago.
First impressions after first 260 miles on broke NYC roads. This Corolla Cross rides very well over bumps, smooth ride, Rear Independent suspension make a huge difference, the car is not choppy over broken pavement when cornering, however there is lots of body roll compared to the Soul. The Soul even with its 1.6 liter felt like a go-kart, very precise and controlled but had a very rough ride. I don't think it's a fair comparison to the Soul. This car goes against the Kia Seltos, Nissan Rouge Sport and Mazda CX-30. You said it correctly its a car to go from point A to Point B with no Drama. Nice interior, comfortable seats, inside feels lot bigger than it is, does not feel claustrophobic like the HRV or CHR, has great visibility, back has lots of storage capacity, just a good small SUV.
A great alternative to the RAV 4, if you don't want to spend the money. It really does everything well.
I will not be surprised if it will become the sales leader in its category by the end of the year.

It's produced at another plant meaning more total units created for the brand which means more sales given how hungry the market is right now any stock will sell out immediately. This seems like a cash grab to me but it's a smart one and also nothing wrong with cash grabs...it's the whole point of doing business. Any Brand that can ramp up production and utilize as many factories as possible will win in the next year or two

Had a year-old Corolla rental recently, and the lo-fi, counter-intuitive infotainment rectangle and droning, too-little/too-late CVT were memorably bad. We're a FR-S and Yaris household, and know lo-fi Toyota long-haul cheapness very well. i for one am very happy toyota made this. definitely the best budget AWD hatchback/crossover you can get for the money. i owned a 2022 impreza hatchback coming from a 2020 corolla hatchback solely because i had a need for awd to be quite honest, other than the fact the subaru did have AWD every single other facet of that car did. not. deliver. it rode too soft, the engine pinged, it rolled alot even after adding a rear sway bar, fuel tank was the size of a thimble, the headlamps got condensation in them, the door lock acuator would freeze when itd get slightly cold out, the interior was extremely lack luster, i completely understand that it is a budget minded version i had but there were some severe quality and content disconnects. and for the price difference between the impreza and AWD corolla cross LE , i would have gladly paid that difference for the toyota quality alone
