What is it that makes trains tug at the heart strings. these steamers bring back my childhood. They have the loneliest sound I ever heard, yet even at 66 give me a yearning to wander as I did as a youngster. Even the modern diesels of today have the same effect. Thanks to all who put these wonderful videos here.
Tremendous footage!!! Your footage of the connecting rods and drive wheels from rt.17 in Sloatsburg, NY where the trackage goes upgrade and is within 20-25ft. is phenominal. Absolutely fantastic!!!
I really miss these excursions!! 614 was the absolute pinnacle of steam!! There is a damn good chance I was riding or chasing along side you back then!! Nothing like blowing down RT 17 hoping not to get pulled over!
Fantastic video! Outstanding job by both the cameraman AND the driver of the vehicle pacing the train... Well planned route and execution. And I'm blown away with the speed this steam train could reach too!
Awesome footage of 614 with WP 484’s whistle! (It is NOT called a western 6 chime, it is an elongated bell SP 6 that was delivered with Western Pacific 484)
Great to see the 614 in action, it was one of many that ran about that time. NKP759, SP 4449, UP 844(4) and several Vermont Steamtown 4-6-2 double headers along with the action on the EBT, DR&GW. Many wonderful memories were brought back watching this. Sure miss those Steam excursions.
I was in one of those caravans chasing the 614...not on this day, however. Also rode the train to Port Jervis. Ate a meal in the diner as we went over Moodna Viaduct. Awesome memories...can't believe it's been 17 years!!
@NJTCOMET No, 2101 was damaged in a roundhouse fire in Kenutcky in 1979 and never ran again. It was cosmetically restored as American Freedom Train #1 and traded for 614 which then ran in the early 80's on Chessie. 2101 is now at the B&O RR Museum in Baltimore MD. 2124 is the Reading T1 at Steamtown. 2102 is in Port Clinton PA and has not run since 1991 on the Reading and Northern. 2100, the last Reading T1, is in Washington state where it ran briefly after being badly converted to oil firing.
This is an impressive and wonderful example of a steam locomotive, the C&O 614 is an impressive sight to observe in action and I am disappointed that this engine is no longer in service anymore. I would really like to see the 614 be rebuilt/restored and returned to operation in the future, the C&O rr had an attractive class of 12 Lima built 4-8-4 type locomotives.
She will be. In November 2024, it was announced that she had been sold to a group who plans on sending her to Strasburg, PA for restoration to operation!
There is a turntable in Port Jervis. It's all that remains of the Erie RR complex that was once there. If I remember correctly, it was restored (at least in part) because of these trips (and the promise of future ones). The restored electric motors were not yet installed for the first trips in October of '96 and a bulldozer actually pulled the turntable to turn the engine.
This was on the west side of the Hudson River. 614 ran these trips for three years on the former Erie RR mainline, now New Jersey Transit / Metro North.
@parim31 I filmed it all myself. This was roughly a 200-mile roundtrip, so you could usually catch the train 3-4 times in each direction (especially with stops).
No. It is currently in storage at the Reading and Northern RR facilities in Port Clinton PA. I'm not exactly sure of what work needs to be done to make 614 operable again.
I'm from DownUnda and we no longer have a single 4-8-4 in working order now. Simply love 'em big ones. And love the 614 - such a handsome looking ironlady. Top video. Love the close up during the pacing scene. I do understand 614 has been stored on a private property and there was some talk about having it back on rails? What is the progress so far?
C&O 614 was the last commercially produced steam passenger locomotive in the United States, and it incorporated all the latest improvements such as all roller bearings on everything, Baker valve hear, and mechanical lubrication. The use of nickle steel was widespread as well. It was close to N&W Class Js in features, but not equal in performance due to several factors, not the least of which being the lower steam pressure. Some criticized the use of the steam injector, calling it a "poor man's feedwater heater" but Roland's tests confirmed it was effective.
It's a shame CSX doesn't allow steam to run on their tracks anymore... If there is enough interest to get her running again she'll have to run on a scenic tourist railroad. 614 is currently on display in Clifton Forge Virginia.
Eggomania86 It’s too big for any scenic tourist line. Like take Strasburg for example. It’s just too big and long. It could however run along side 425 on its excursions or run excursions instead of 425 every so often. Where 113 and 425 run is one of the only places I could think of that would run it
@typebangin incorrect, that engine is EX Reading 2101, a T1, not C&O 614, 2101 is at The Steam Town National Historic Site on display but is currently undergoing asbestos removal. Reading 2102 used to be used by the BM&R on occasions from Temple to Hamburg, she still might be up in Temple somewhere, to bad that program shutdown :(
Impressive - even by US steam standards.... to haul a 22 coaches 1,500 tons or so train like that but I've read that the "Greenbriers" were design to pull 25coach+ trains at 80mph!! Great pacing shots. Gotta love that whistle :-) TU
@typebangin Parabéns pelo vídeo, as tomadas de cenas acompanhando a locomotiva na estrada ficou sensacional, muito bom mesmo. E anda muito essa máquina, em certos momentos parece flutuar nos trilhos. Gostei!!!
614 is REAL steam engine. She'd kick Thomas' sissy blue ass any day of the week. Awesome video! I rode behind 614 on a CSX Safety Express excursion in March, 1981. It was one of the best days of my life.
I remember watching this video ALL the time on my parents old computer many years ago. Ah man, fun memories from years ago...

The rods are absolutely huge
Its great to see this video again after i lost it for 7 years after 2013, im happy to watch it again, my favorite american steam locomotive
I really miss these excursions!! 614 was the absolute pinnacle of steam!! There is a damn good chance I was riding or chasing along side you back then!! Nothing like blowing down RT 17 hoping not to get pulled over!

Superb showing close up piston action and great sound! Thanks for sharing! Seb
I am glad that I had a chance to ride behind C&O 614. I would like to see this engine run again someday.
What really impressed me was how clean the stack was- which is either an indication of some pretty level track or a one heck of a skilled fireman!
I've watched this video about a 1000 times since you put it on. Easily the best pace shots on youtube.
Awesome video, Ross Rowland ran many great trips with this engine and others. It was always fun to ride them. Thanks for sharing+ your great video.
Great video!! The best I have seen!! I chase trains to but the old steam you have some great stuff here.
Awesome footage of 614 with WP 484’s whistle! (It is NOT called a western 6 chime, it is an elongated bell SP 6 that was delivered with Western Pacific 484)
Man, those were some good close up shots running along side the locomotive
What amazes me is the fact that all those moving parts were pounded out by hand. Those who molded the steel were artists.
This video brings back memories

That is such a amazing shot of the C&O 614 running around the corner on the tracks on 4:27
I was in one of those caravans chasing the 614...not on this day, however. Also rode the train to Port Jervis. Ate a meal in the diner as we went over Moodna Viaduct. Awesome memories...can't believe it's been 17 years!!
I was on this train. I can't believe it is almost 13 years ago. Thanks for the video.
These powerful locomotives are a metaphor for the strength and industry in which the hype our once.
its so cool seeing a classic like these come into towns man alive i love them stem era was my fav UP Challenger Big Boy all those!
Ok, this just may be my all time favorite UA-cam vid.
What an absolutely beautiful machine!
These powerful locomotives are a metaphor for the strength and industry our nation once possessed.
gpiano88 well put
@@drby0788 thank you

Rode the same trip on 10-12-97 ( the weekend before this). Flew in from the west coast specifically for this.

@@OldsVistaCruiser That’s what I read as well!!!
What an impressive video, one of the best on here! Thanks!
Now that's how a whistle should sound. She's singing to me. Music to my ears and a great video too!
My wife and I were on that train trip -- Was a fantastic trip and day -- Wish we could do it again!
There is a turntable in Port Jervis. It's all that remains of the Erie RR complex that was once there.

This sounds much better than 261! That one is an ATSF 6 chime and this one here is a Boston and Maine 6 chime.
Ryan Seals sure it’s not a C&O 6 chime?
This video is FAN-TAS-TIC! Well done!!! Beautiful train, great footage and sounds.
614 thundering out of the Otisville Tunell...sweet footage...thanks!
This is absolutely amazing.
This was on the west side of the Hudson River. 614 ran these trips for three years on the former Erie RR mainline, now New Jersey Transit / Metro North.
Holy **** Never knew those trains could pull that much :O Nice vid!
fantastic job. Thank you very much
This is an AWESOME video. Thanks for sharing!
What a beautiful train.
Definitely gre🎉at for the video and camera
That engine is powerful, it attack those grades effortlessly without slowing down a bit.
I don't know, you may be right. They used a number of different whistles on these trips including a Reading 6-chime and a N&W hooter.
Remember when we built things to last!
Gotta love the age of steam.
Ощущаю запах осени и паровоза! Супер! Спасибо!
really good pacing shots. Must have been a thrill to see
God that was awesome! Railroading at it's finest!
Muy buena filmación ,en su totalidad ,no solamente se lo vé al trén moviendose claramente , sino también todas sus adyacencias. Estupendo.
@parim31 I filmed it all myself. This was roughly a 200-mile roundtrip, so you could usually catch the train 3-4 times in each direction (especially with stops).
a plus top notch work. my dad was 47 years with katy rr he cant wait to see this video.
Perfect job of pacing!
@ducker1942 Nope. 614 is a C&O J3a, which has the same wheel configuration, but is a completely different design. There are no NYC Niagaras left.
Magnificant footage !
Braavo !!
C&O 6 chime. Love it!
I rode that same train and route the very next year.
Very nice train. Gotta love trains.
No. It is currently in storage at the Reading and Northern RR facilities in Port Clinton PA. I'm not exactly sure of what work needs to be done to make 614 operable again.
Also, the Reading And Northern 425 is also close to your area.
Is this the same 614 that powered the Chessie Safety Express in the early 1980s?
The 614 is resting at the C&O center in clifton forge va, and has been repainted in green for the greenbriar hotel
you could see the 261 or the 844. the 261 is supposed to run later this year and the 844 just did a run
Some of the best pacing video ever.
What a beautiful steam engine!!
I know it's so beautiful train
This video is amazing!
Great product from the LIMA works. Such a great shame that she no longer operates.
MrSteeleye Chances are good that we haven't seen the last of this speed demon quite yet.
The Rhythmic Chugging sounds the best!
WOW, THAT IS AWESOME!!!!
Amazing # 1st whistle. The sound everything on 0:30
I'm from DownUnda and we no longer have a single 4-8-4 in working order now. Simply love 'em big ones. And love the 614 - such a handsome looking ironlady. Top video. I love it. Absolutely gorgeous.
The closeup at 4:00 made me drool a little. Fantastic vid!

Its a shame CSX doesn't care about public relations in the communities it serves
Other than N&W 611, that is the most beautiful whistle I've ever heard.
route 17 pacing is awsome. great video.
C&O 614 is like a “Streamlined Kanawha,” although she’s a 4-8-4 northern types and the Kanawha’s are modified 2-8-4 berks.
@HughFromAlice Yes what a machine and credit to the engineer who's not afraid to use its power, Im 59 and have this many times.Terrific stuff.
Belles locomotives un régal !!!
Awesome video!
How did you eliminate the wind noise when you were following the 614?
The quality of this video is outstanding!
The Nickel plate 765 is getting ready to go out on a trip from Fort Wayne IN, out to PA, its leaving Fort Wayne, on July 20, 2012
Chesapeake and Ohio 4-8-4 No. 614 pulls The Erie Limited excursion from Hoboken to Port Jervis and return.
@typebangin incorrect, that engine is EX Reading 2101, a T1, not C&O 614, 2101 is at The Steam Town National Historic Site on display but is currently undergoing asbestos removal. #614 Was build from the Lima locomotive works
That has to be faster and way longer than when I went on Amtrak. Progress!

Very nice whistle and such a powerful locomotive.
Outstanding pacing shots, probably the best I've ever seen. Find my videos for the turntable shots.
What whistle is it wearing? It sounds very similar, if not identical, to NKP 765's whistle
I moved to Orange County in November 1 1998 the last day the C&O 614 ran.
@zz750211 sounds like an AT&SF 6 chime to me
I love to see that in the future
Great video
Wow very nice steam train I like C&O #614 4-8-4
Now available on DVD. See link above.
beautiful loco
Realize the beauty, then realize the power... it's pulling 23 cars!
614 is REAL steam engine. She'd kick Thomas' sissy blue ass any day of the week.
