Boy oh boy could that engine ever run. It had a good sound to it, and I love the sound of the whistle. I hope it does return to the rails someday, and maybe doublehead with another northern. Still, these were great shots, nice work.
Really great video. I lived in Ramsey NJ when they were making these runs on a regular basis. I remember sitting on the screen porch and hearing this huge sound get bigger and bigger. We jumped up and ran through the backyard to where the Erie (sorry NJ Transit) tracks were and watched this magnificent monster go by.
They are definitely not a requirement, as only a handful of steam locomotives have them. They were installed along with a few other upgrades (including, I believe, the ability to control a trailing diesel from 614's cab) before the 1998 trips as, I believe, a way to help make 614 look better to Class I railroads that were leery of allowing an "old steam locomotive" to run on their railroad.
Would love to see her run. Sad seeing her sitting in Clifton Forge and cold and GREEN!! Love the whistle. Funny seeing people hanging out car windows video taping.
What a handsome and impressive example of a steam locomotive to observe in operation that the C&O 614 was, the C&O rr had an attractive small roster of 4-8-4 "Greenbrier" type engines. I really hope that the 614 becomes rebuilt/ gets returned to operation in the future at some point because this locomotive has an impressive excursion service career history & is exciting to see in action under it's own power.
My goodness!!! 😱 Steam locomotive are machines loaded with charisma!!! Neither traction or deisel-electric locos can out-class 'em!!! And I'm a staunch traction guy!!! I love steam locos (including coal-burning steam locos). Lets preserve these beautiful, steam behemoths!!! 🚂🚂🚂👍😉
The FRA state that any locomotive that was built in 1945 or newer most have ditch lights in stalled. That's why when Reading & Northern rebuilt 425 this past year, they didn't have to in stall ditch lights, 425 was built in 1928. I'll be seeing 614 tomorrow for I'll be at Port Clinton, PA. where she is being stored. Len.
I realize this was 12 years ago, but that rule about ditch lights simply isn’t true. Otherwise you would see N&W 611 have ditch lights, which it doesn’t. There’s also ways around the ditch light rule such as locomotives equipped with gyralites or mars lights.
Were there serious plans to run on the Northeast Corridor? I remember hearing about a Philadelphia to Harrisburg trip (possibly one over Horseshoe Curve also) and a Hoboken to Binghamton trip, neither of which ever happened. I would have loved to see 614 at 100 mph on the Northeast Corridor...
I always hated that "hooter" N&W whistle on that locomotive, it's oringinal was much better. I love seeing Conrail blue in Campbell Hall, and at night, from afar, the engine looks like a new PL42AC with the low headlight along with the ditch lights. Great video.
@@atomicboom-w3y ditch lights in Canada are a requirement on steam locomotives that run on the main. CN 6060 has them too. But if they cross the border into the US, they remove them since they're not a requirement
The coal bunker was enlarged from 25 to 50 tons during restoration in 1979-1980. It is still the original tender. The second water tender was always pulled behind 614, because increasing the coal capacity in the tender lowered the water capacity. The modifications were done to allow 614 to run all day without needing to stop for coal or water.
there's one thing I really don't understand and maybe somebody could fill me in but why would somebody put ditchlights on a steam engine? It looks really strange...or maybe it was for an excursion or something but ditch lights...yeah...it looks really strange on a steam engine
Ross had Ditch Lights, Cab Signal and 27 pin jumper capability added. There were several reasons, as I recall, but most importantly because Slam-Trak wanted it.

I know it's 2010, but I can never get over how impressive this almost 180 year old technology is. Thanks for the reply!

You and me both, friend.
As of November 2024, it was announced that C&O #614 will be heading to the Strasburg Rail Road for operational restoration.
This is enough to make a kid of 60 go weak at the knees, these steam locos have to be one a mans greatest inventions.

I took this trip the day before, The most amazing thing on the trip to me was the amout of people lining the route of the trip to watch it go by.
That's cool. Hope the 614 runs again someday. This is a great video.
Nice to see all the 614 Hoboken/Port Jervis footage coming out of hiding.
I love the blacked out tires!!! The way steam should be, get 'em Ross!!!!!!!
We had this kinda camera quality back then?! lol. It looks better than most of them today!

Maybe 45-50 mph? It's been along time... There were some slow spots near Tuxedo NY, but this is north of Southfields where they began to gain speed.

you can see in her pistons on the tracks"FREEDOM ,FREEDOM at Last!!" with aloud whistle
@Kleman09 I was referring to locomotive steam power despite not saying that in my post. You are most correct though.
22 trips between 96 and 98 plus a few additional test runs and make-up trips.
614 was continued on the excursions duties all the way until 1999.
simply Powerfull
Now available on DVD. See link above.
How often did they run the Hoboken-Port Jervis trips?
That train was flat modockin! And yes, running under her own power!
@EeRocKK Steam technology is well over 180 years old.
Great video, tks for posting.
I was on this train that day.
I like the ditch lights! And 22 CARS??? beat that 844!
Up 844, tell that to when I pushed a freight train.

NJT4111 Actually a Southern 3 Chime Long Bell.
That whistle sounds so weird in the 614. That fits better in the Big Boy and the Challenger locomotives.
MAN, IT LOOKED LIKE THAT OLD ENGINE COULD RACE A BOLT OF LIGHTNING AND WIN. That was one big beautiful and fast train.
............ AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How fast was it going at 3:47?
Awesome video!

@critchley3819 - Agreed friend, this video had my attention all the time, steam engines in the dark, that was something else !
If only the 614 had the same chance...

Well done the world and has pontential now!
I like the ditch-lights!

What kind of Hancock whistle is 614 wearing?
LOVE IT!!!
What kind of whistle is it?
Ditch lights???
Jeremy Hagan FRA mandated all locomotives run on any class one rails need ditch light. Looks really stupid to me.
@@kyleschessiecumberlanddivi5581 No this was just for NJT probably. 844 doesn't have dirchlights. Neither does 4449, 3751, 261, or 765.

Any ideas on where that tender came from? Not original equipement, custom made I'm guessing.

Well, the 611 has high potential now!
Am I hearing things or is 614 wearing N&W#611’s whistle?
@Kymani Brown what?!
Coś pięknego jest w tych parowozach .Szkoda że odchodzą .Na takich maszynach ja też jeździłem po Polsce . Toruń ...

614`s whistle sounds like a Union Pacific Big Boy whistle
Szkoda że jakość jest tak słaba... Lokomotywa pierwsza klasa, ma moc.

She's ment to haul up grade and go 80mph!
WOW!!
I hate people like the person at 7:09 that shout WOO! right after or before the train comes through... they always mess up the recordings
