Ironically, the real Thomas Edison for which the Theranos device was named, didn’t actually invent much himself, but instead ran a lab and took credit - and the patents - for his employees’ inventions.
That’s true- my husbands grandfather worked in the Edison lab- and told us the same thing. The people working in the lab would invent things and Edison got the credit.

The worst part of this story is Ian Gibbons. Elizabeth emailing his wife simply to say to turn in his computer because it had sensitive information on it after he died just gives me chills. Absolutely terrible
so she is so insensitive, and despicable after Ian's death, she bullied and mistreated people then she lied so much because she wanted to help people. What a paradox.
Damn she got herself a new man while facing 20 years in prison, being a known pathological liar and about to be in mad debt and I can’t even get a text back. (I’m actually married, but I thought it was funny).
Interesting how Phyliss was able to instantly tell Elizabeth that it was not a feasible idea while the other guy professor jumped on the idea so much. Reminded me of hype professors who just try to push their students to monetize their creations and market themselves without thinking through the practical constraints, i think because they observed the rise of Silicon Valley and doesnt want to be the guy who was skeptical and missed out on a good startup opportunity.
Holmes really nailed the hot, yet “disheveled genius who doesn’t care about appearance” look. The iconic black turtleneck, the messy makeup and messy hair, but the always-perfect dye job. She absolutely paid careful attention to her appearance and projected a very specific image.
Narcisissists of a higher cognitive intellect project that look (higher than average not commesurate with Mensa criteria). It's deliberate. Current lead of the UK included.
I literally just watched both Fyre festival documentaries this evening and I had the exact same thought. We need to keep a close eye on these criminal savants as soon as they are out of prison, because they will never change for the better, and they remain well connected. They are morally defective and will become even bigger menaces to society given half a chance. God help us if they gain any political power. Keep an eye on Elon Musk, too. EDIT: Wait WHAT? Elizabeth Holmes has not gone to prison??
@@fs4538 Because people find a familiarity and comfort in watching people who are the same race as them and op enjoys crime and mystery and scandal stories and if you look on youtube, you're not going to find black women who do true crime stories. Black women on youtube tend to make content about clothes, makeup, hair, mukbangs, vlogs.
Ian GIbbons under valued himself. In the biotech industry. how many people are there with his qualifications and experience? Did he really think he would think at 67 it would be hard for him to find a another job?
The really wild thing about this story to me is that if she was that exceptional at marketing, she could've created ANY product that there was a need for, and been super successful.
Saying that Elizabeth was lying cause she had good intentions is such bs cause she literally caused a guy to commit suicide and wasn’t even sorry about it.
To be fair she didn't cause his suicide, he could have quit his job and started over, millions do it all the time. I'm sure he was brilliant and could have found something else
Bookie A nope. Doesn’t matter that he should’ve quit. He shouldn’t have been treated that way in the first place PERIOD She was also manipulative. People like that aren’t just bullies, but they know how to wrap a person around their fingers and make them think it’s them that’s the problem. So maybe he might have not even been looking for a job because Elizabeth was a manipulative psycho with mentally abusive capabilities. Why do you think people in abusive relationships don’t leave? Same reason.
And she gaslit the people who were supposed to create the Edison and intentionally impeded their communication with each other. She didn't give a 💩about the science that was supposedly her passion.
This story just goes to show how much "making it" in this country has VERY little to do with hard work, determination, and education, and EVERYTHING to do with who you know, how attractive you are and how much you can scheme. It feels like you have to be a total scumbag to be at the top of any industry
It’s only those types of people who we hear about...because they break the law or get caught. Most successful people work their butts off to get where they are and you will never know their names. That’s how News works...only the scandals make the front page and 24 hr news cycle.
Yeah but she got caught. She was scamming people and got caught. Most CEOs work their asses off creating tons of jobs and new products and services and we never hear about them because they’re not doing anything wrong. She is not the norm that’s why we know her name.
this was one of the most mysterious, weirdly fascinating stories about scandals in tech. The whole situation almost feels like something out of science fiction (also, I feel so bad for Ian Gibbons and his family, and the patients who received faulty health diagnoses...)
That's the thing, the medical industry does not work as what people commonly associate as "tech". She wanted to be like a Silicon Valley, while innovating in a field where things move to a much slower pace due to the fact that people's lives depend on reliability.
Although I already knew about Rachel Dolezal and Elizabeth Holmes, I really enjoyed your retelling of these stories. Thank you and I hope you continue making these amazing Makeup & History videos.
Two things that were interesting, the employees started writing notes to each other to ask question because they realized they were being bugged or their info was compromised. Also the two whistle blowers had burner phones and would hide out in one of their backyards to talk. They were stressed because they were being watched and intimidated. On another note : You need to do one of these on 'Dirty John.'
I know that I'm six months late, but I only recently discovered your channel so I get to go back and binge on your fantastic videos. I just love your channel, I always learn so much! You are a great storyteller not to mention beautiful! 💗
She wanted a deeper voice meanwhile I’m over here getting mixed up with my dad or brothers on the phone and scaring coworkers when I talk all of a sudden. 😭 New sub, these stories are just 👌🏼
It’s actually pretty common for women to put in a deeper voice in order to be taken more seriously. It’s unfortunate (and extremely sexist), but women with high, light voices tend not to be taken as seriously in positions of power. The best possible example of this is AOC. I’ve seen so many people (mostly men, lbh) make fun of her for her voice, say she sounds like a child, or like a valley girl, and who could take a valley girl seriously? She mustn’t be very smart, because she sounds like a teenage girl - never mind the placing second in an international science fair as a teen (which also led to her having a constellation named after her), or her summa cum laude at University with a double degree in economics and international relations....she has a high pitched voice, so she can’t be taken too seriously. (Though people who say stuff like this also tend to hold her working class background against her, so they’re classist as well as sexist). So that’s why a lot of women make the effort to lower their voices. I’ve done it, in job interviews, on television interviews and whatnot.
@@katherinemorelle7115 so true. I was made fun of for years and what was so annoying is the other women in my family's voices are lower than mines. I always had people mocking me. My voice did finally deepen on its own when I got into my late 20s.

She was born into tremendous wealth with lots of connections from her parents so even before she came crashing down or even if she was never caught it wouldnt be fair to compare her "success" to that of the average person.
There’s a young man in florida arrested for posing as a doctor and treating patients as he was a teenager. Can you story him? (Also- this week he was in the news again- now he’s 23 years old- for fraud).

Just imagine how much of that money could change the economic system in the U.S not to talk about the whole world!!! This is when you know usually rich people are greedy and selfish. Unbelievable.....
I'd like to give some investors the benefit of the doubt. They were convinced this worked, and seeing all the other investors and board members, it makes sense they thought it was legit. So they were investing in something that looked like a life-saving technology. If it had actually worked, it would have made the world a better place.
Meanwhile, they could just work to implement universal healthcare. However, almost all these main big investors seem pretty opposed to that life saving system.
@@Bianca_Toeps LOL come on now. They did not invest because it was a life saving technology. They invested because if this worked, they would have had the MONOPOL on a trillion dollar industry that has almost zero competitors in it's current form, and it would have spread worldwide... making them richer than the GDP of whole continents. I'm a MD and I work for Doctor without borders, but I previously worked for the UN. We BEGGED investors to invest ONLY 550'000 dollars in a machine that had an already made prototype, the money was only for the materials, the inventors wanted to replicate it pro bono, but we couldn't find ANYBODY to invest in a cut throat technology that would have saved million of lives (I'm quiet sure I cannot reveal what it was for but a hint, it was to repair something American government themselves destroyed.) The return on investment wasn't big enough and it would have taken at least 2 years, so you know the boss of Nestlé couldn't wait to get his half of a million back, money he makes in less than a month. You are very sweet, but this isn't why people invest, otherwise people like me would be without work and I'd be extremely happy. Right now investors could make money by investing in a super caloric paste made off peanuts, that we give to kids to avoid them dying from malnourishment. The only investors that wanted in, wanted to make the paste 12 times more expensive than it is ATM, even if now the profit, at this price, is already 70% . they wanted to make 200 % of profit otherwise they are not interested. Rich people are rich for a reason, and it's not by helping others, not stealing from foreign lands, or paying their workers equal wages
Egyptian__ __Queen PharmD Candidate, 4th year here! Agreed. Yes, our nation spends millions more on our healthcare system with no more benefits than other similar nations. In some cases we have decreased results. Also when you shop at almost any major retail, you can expect that you are getting at least 100% markup on all products for profit. When Pharmacists are asked what is preferred brand of a certain drug, we respond “the cheapest one” because it’s all the same lol (unless you allergic inactive ingredients & dyes).

Please in those moments take care of your mental and physical health, surround yourself with love and peacefulness, and remember that you WILL make it, because you are fabulous and that's how we do it ;) Regarding your witty comment, absolutely you are 100% correct, America is a freaking shame. I don't know how those billionaires can live peacefully with their conscience, when down their street, someone is homeless shooting H, because they cannot have access to a good physician and anti psychotic meds, and they have only street drugs to quite their pains.. My Father is Egyptian and I was born there, when I know that Egypt, as well as at least 20 other African nations have a form of universal healthcare ... Makes me re think the status of America as a "first world nation" . I know that my diabetic family in Egypt will get their insulin for free, if one day I cannot help anymore. It is free for the poorest and the more you earn the more you will pay (richest will get theirs from America, France etc), surgeries are for free, broken arm? Fixed for free. Yes you might have a nasty scar because an intern has to stitch you back up, but we don't let people die in front of hospitals. (I'm not selling you some dream here lol, we have some nasty public hospitals, but American people die from septicemia and disease contracted in hospitals too, and they die because of malpractice from zealous bad doctors, too.) Medications are also partially or entirely taken care of by the state, medications used extremely frequently like penicillin, migraine medication, blood pressure meds, are almost free. Egypt pays between 50 to 90 pr cent of the initial price, and the state has it's own laboratories to produce in mass and cheaply than foreign labs like pfizer. We also have state bakeries where the poorest buy their bread partially paid by the state. Again, I'm not going to lie and tell you our public hospitals are top notch, unfortunately my nation first disease is corruption. Some are so overcrowded that people have to lay in the hallways, some people bring their own mattresses or pillows, but it is still better than what I have seen in the US. I did an internship in LA, and I volunteered to treat people in skid row.. Chileee, I couldn't find a chain of chemists that wanted to help and give me their bad, out of date, not picked up prescriptions, I had a pre printed contract that alleviated them from any responsibility, all was looked up by the lawyer.. Some didn't want to even hear what I had to say, they are just immune to others pain, it's terrible. (I didn't ask for controlled substances of course, sometimes all I needed was paracetamol, medications for UTI's, simple things). I had to buy my own gloves, scrubs, masks, the irony lol. Tell orange man that a "shitthole" inhabitant came to America to help it's citizen and had to pay out of pocket because no one wanted to help, but other poor working folks. A whole box of Xanax costs less than 2 dollars to make, including packaging, printing of labels and everything. It is such a shame. I hope you will have the opportunity to help and see things change for the best soon, I really empathize with y'all. Sorry for the long ass comment, I'm always so happy to talk to amazing clever hard working kids who want to make their world a better place ;)
Raise your hand if you’d love for Cydnee to create a podcast where she speaks even more in-depth on historical occurrences! I could see a weekly 60-90 min unedited video of her speaking or educating on topics that are important to her. 🙋♂️ Also, I had professors and educators like you, in college, who were so passionate about the subject they taught that retaining knowledge was easy, and interesting. The best profs pretty much threw the overpriced, dry, and often inaccurate and propagandist textbooks in the trash, and found published journals, videos and so many other avenues to teach us information. There are things that shocked me in college to learn about. Several of these professors would also create their own textbooks and tell the college what price they would be, which was often comparable to buying a hardback and sometime paperback novel. Others to get around the university’s slimy money schemes, would give out their textbooks in pieces, either physically or electronically. I wish more profs were hip to this. Also, due to the types of profs I had, yes I would spend hours on Rate My Professor sussing out profs, I’m that person that when something historical pops up in a show or movie that was part of my major or minor or other electives I took, my friends look at me and tell me not to say anything. Of course, they know better, and they know they’re about to get a small history lesson. I don’t tolerate voluntary ignorance, even with myself.

This the most perfect way and genius way for me to learn how to do makeup. I always get bored watching those make up tutorial videos! I love crime and mystery stories so thank you 🙏🏽
Love your version of these stories! Only minor “fact” checks from me, I’ve watched tons of documentaries on this compulsive manipulator, a fascinating case study... The pronunciation of it is Si-li-kun Valley (not sili-cone like the implant), not obvious at all but good to know. The patch she conceived in her college days, which she took to that professor/only female scientist she ever consulted was meant to take a sample of blood *through the skin* (top layer of the epidermis), so it was her first idea for testing the blood...but yeah, it wasn’t practical or possible to take a proper sample that way for many reasons, as you & the female expert said! And when you said early on that the Edison didn’t work so the scientists had to do “manual testing” for the investors in the basement, it’s good to clarify it was just them running the tests in typical blood testing machines (which were massive, not small/compact like the Edison), just as you’d find in a Lab Corp or Quest Diagnostics lab. Same as they had to do at Walgreens later. Lastly, while she admired all of these famous inventors, it was specifically Steve Jobs she directly imitated, down to the black turtlenecks/minimalistic wardrobe and severe treatment of her staff while remaining relentlessly focused on the mission. That was his trademark, too. This whole thing was doomed to fail because she was trying to enter the software/tech world with a healthcare/medical product. Square peg, round hole. Millions of dollars later, they started to see past her unblinking stare 😳 and endless enthusiasm. It’s shocking how many people she persuaded...and fooled. And that voice was fake AF, she felt she’d be taken more seriously with a deeper voice (not untrue, women with high pitched voices are seen as childlike. 😞) Thank you for getting the word out about her! She’s quite the...historical figure. Also, I’m all for a longer video, loves me some details, but if you think 30 minutes or so is best, do it! 🤗
Cydnee Black I can only imagine! Doing the makeup simultaneously only adds to it, I’m sure. This story is just so complex, I hope folks look at the great docs out there that cover it in depth if they wanna get the full scoop - it’s like hours of info, interviews from her former employees, journalists, and more. I think you gave just enough info to get people informed about the main points, which is perfect. We need to avoid allowing someone like this to get so far again, she was playing with real people’s lives!! (Those taking the blood tests...I care way less about the millionaires like the DeVos family losing a few mill, they’re fine.) also, makes me a touch more upset that it’s a woman and it was ALL men who trusted her...
Love love love the uptick in content featuring makeup and *insert topic here * I get to enjoy the transformation aspect of makeup, which is what I enjoy most about makeup videos while getting to listen to something interesting. Because makeup is fun to watch but not fun to hear about

@joanneyoung1081 Thanks so much for the update, I hope she gets what she deserves
The really wild thing about this story to me is that if she was that exceptional at marketing, she could've created ANY product that there was a need for, and been super successful.
RIGHT???
Saying that Elizabeth was lying cause she had good intentions is such bs cause she literally caused a guy to commit suicide and wasn’t even sorry about it.
Totally, sociopath/unfeeling versus empathetic/feeling being are not at all in the same wavelength.
Ikr!! And she spied on her employees.....? 👀👀
To be fair she didn't cause his suicide, he could have quit his job and started over, millions do it all the time. I'm sure he was brilliant and could have found something else
Bookie A nope. Doesn’t matter that he should’ve quit. He shouldn’t have been treated that way in the first place PERIOD
She was also manipulative.
True
Yeah but she got caught. She was scamming people and got caught. Most CEOs work their asses off creating tons of jobs and new products and services and we never hear about them because they’re not doing anything wrong. She is not the norm that’s why we know her name.
Well, she did get found out eventually but you're lowkey right.

this was one of the most mysterious, weirdly fascinating stories about scandals in tech. The whole situation almost feels like something out of science fiction
(also, I feel so bad for Ian Gibbons and his family, and the patients who received faulty health diagnoses...)
That's the thing, the medical industry does not work as what people commonly associate as "tech". She wanted to be like a Silicon Valley, while innovating in a field where things move to a much slower pace due to the fact that people's lives depend on reliability.

Two things that were interesting, the employees started writing notes to each other to ask question because they realized they were being bugged or their info was compromised. LOLOL

It is free for the poorest and the more you earn the more you will pay (richest will get theirs from America, France etc),
surgeries are for free, broken arm? Fixed for free.
Yes you might have a nasty scar because an intern has to stitch you back up, but we don't let people die in front of hospitals.
(I'm not selling you some dream here lol, we have some nasty public hospitals, but American people die from septicemia and disease contracted in hospitals too, and they die because of malpractice from zealous bad doctors, too.)
Medications are also partially or entirely taken care of by the state, medications used extremely frequently like penicillin, migraine medication, blood pressure meds, are almost free.

Also, I had professors and educators like you, in college, who were so passionate about the subject they taught that retaining knowledge was easy, and interesting.

Hey 👋🏾! I don’t know how you popped up on my timeline, I’m happy you did. Beauty and brains! I love these segments makeup and history. I’ve passed you on to my teenage daughter. New sun is for sure keep up the good work!
She’s young, if she hid even some of that money, she gets out of prison a multi-millionaire. Which takes most multi-millionaires at least 20 years to achieve... 🤔
Smart af. 🥴😳
Not really was it worth it for 20 years and hurting others with making this fake idea that she pushed that scared so many people and it was the cause of so many people dying because she pushed her product into stores when they didn’t even work giving false information she shouldn’t walk at all with 20 years
Over-seas bank accounts?
I NEVER CLICKED SO FAST! I work in the medical device industry.. and I was just thinking about this again. WHat the ACTUal hell, right?! So unreal.
Insane!
Cydnee Black Rest In Peace Ian Gibbons. And his poor wife.
The lying and “fake it til you make it” is certainly a thing in Silicon Valley, happens all the time. However to be such a toxic lying ass environment to drive a person to take their life? Unforgivable. Makes me furious.
I just want you to know, you're one of the only good things to happen to me this year. I literally get off work, come home, watch your videos, and decompress
❤️
💜💜
This the most perfect way and genius way for me to learn how to do makeup. I always get bored watching those make up tutorial videos! I love crime and mystery stories so thank you 🙏🏽
The movie is coming on hulu. When I saw the trailer, I was like how do I know about this.... oh from watching Cydnee!!!!! Thank you so much
Love your version of these stories!
Thank you for getting the word out about her! She’s quite the...historical figure. Also, I’m all for a longer video, loves me some details, but if you think 30 minutes or so is best, do it! 🤗
Thank you for sharing!! I will probably keep them at 30 mins. It takes SO LONG to film and edit these already, I can’t imagine making them longer
Love love love the uptick in content featuring makeup and *insert topic here *
I get to enjoy the transformation aspect of makeup, which is what I enjoy most about makeup videos while getting to listen to something interesting. Because makeup is fun to watch but not fun to hear about
I'm a New subscriber.. You definitely give me drunk history feel without the being drunk part..Unless you are then well... You do you no judgement here 😜😂
As someone who's been watching Bailey sarian for awhile ya
I can see the similarities.
But I can see you're just doing your own thing, It's all about how a person tells the story and your storytelling is 💯 Dope AF‼️
Thank you for the amazing videos..
Keep up the good work.
🖤💙🖤💙🖤
