Reminded me of hype professors who just try to push their students to monetize their creations and market themselves without thinking through the practical constraints, i think because they observed the rise of Silicon Valley and doesnt want to be the guy who was skeptical and missed out on a good startup opportunity.

It’s actually pretty common for women to put in a deeper voice in order to be taken more seriously. It’s unfortunate (and extremely sexist), but women with high, light voices tend not to be taken as seriously in positions of power.
The best possible example of this is AOC. I’ve seen so many people (mostly men, lbh) make fun of her for her voice, say she sounds like a child, or like a valley girl, and who could take a valley girl seriously? She mustn’t be very smart, because she sounds like a teenage girl - never mind the placing second in an international science fair as a teen (which also led to her having a constellation named after her), or her summa cum laude at University with a double degree in economics and international relations....she has a high pitched voice, so she can’t be taken too seriously. (Though people who say stuff like this also tend to hold her working class background against her, so they’re classist as well as sexist).
So that’s why a lot of women make the effort to lower their voices. I’ve done it, in job interviews, on television interviews and whatnot.

I'd like to give some investors the benefit of the doubt. They were convinced this worked, and seeing all the other investors and board members, it makes sense they thought it was legit. So they were investing in something that looked like a life-saving technology. If it had actually worked, it would have made the world a better place.

    • @HeavenlyEchoVirus

Meanwhile, they could just work to implement universal healthcare. However, almost all these main big investors seem pretty opposed to that life saving system.

@@Bianca_Toeps LOL come on now. They did not invest because it was a life saving technology. They invested because if this worked, they would have had the MONOPOL on a trillion dollar industry that has almost zero competitors in it's current form, and it would have spread worldwide... making them richer than the GDP of whole continents.
I'm a MD and I work for Doctor without borders, but I previously worked for the UN. We BEGGED investors to invest ONLY 550'000 dollars in a machine that had an already made prototype, the money was only for the materials, the inventors wanted to replicate it pro bono, but we couldn't find ANYBODY to invest in a cut throat technology that would have saved million of lives (I'm quiet sure I cannot reveal what it was for but a hint, it was to repair something American government themselves destroyed.) The return on investment wasn't big enough and it would have taken at least 2 years, so you know the boss of Nestlé couldn't wait to get his half of a million back, money he makes in less than a month. You are very sweet, but this isn't why people invest, otherwise people like me would be without work and I'd be extremely happy.
Right now investors could make money by investing in a super caloric paste made off peanuts, that we give to kids to avoid them dying from malnourishment. The only investors that wanted in, wanted to make the paste 12 times more expensive than it is ATM, even if now the profit, at this price, is already 70% . they wanted to make 200 % of profit otherwise they are not interested. Rich people are rich for a reason, and it's not by helping others, not stealing from foreign lands, or paying their workers equal wages

Regarding your witty comment, absolutely you are 100% correct, America is a freaking shame.
I don't know how those billionaires can live peacefully with their conscience, when down their street, someone is homeless shooting H, because they cannot have access to a good physician and anti psychotic meds, and they have only street drugs to quite their pains..
My Father is Egyptian and I was born there, when I know that Egypt, as well as at least 20 other African nations have a form of universal healthcare ... Makes me re think the status of America as a "first world nation" .
I know that my diabetic family in Egypt will get their insulin for free, if one day I cannot help anymore.
It is free for the poorest and the more you earn the more you will pay (richest will get theirs from America, France etc),
surgeries are for free, broken arm? Fixed for free.
Yes you might have a nasty scar because an intern has to stitch you back up, but we don't let people die in front of hospitals.
(I'm not selling you some dream here lol, we have some nasty public hospitals, but American people die from septicemia and disease contracted in hospitals too, and they die because of malpractice from zealous bad doctors, too.)
Medications are also partially or entirely taken care of by the state, medications used extremely frequently like penicillin, migraine medication, blood pressure meds, are almost free.
Egypt pays between 50 to 90 pr cent of the initial price, and the state has it's own laboratories to produce in mass and cheaply than foreign labs like pfizer.
We also have state bakeries where the poorest buy their bread partially paid by the state.
Again, I'm not going to lie and tell you our public hospitals are top notch, unfortunately my nation first disease is corruption.
Some are so overcrowded that people have to lay in the hallways, some people bring their own mattresses or pillows, but it is still better than what I have seen in the US.
I did an internship in LA, and I volunteered to treat people in skid row.. Chileee, I couldn't find a chain of chemists that wanted to help and give me their bad, out of date, not picked up prescriptions, I had a pre printed contract that alleviated them from any responsibility, all was looked up by the lawyer..
Some didn't want to even hear what I had to say, they are just immune to others pain, it's terrible. (I didn't ask for controlled substances of course, sometimes all I needed was paracetamol, medications for UTI's, simple things).
I had to buy my own gloves, scrubs, masks, the irony lol. Tell orange man that a "shitthole" inhabitant came to America to help it's citizen and had to pay out of pocket because no one wanted to help, but other poor working folks.
A whole box of Xanax costs less than 2 dollars to make, including packaging, printing of labels and everything. It is such a shame. I hope you will have the opportunity to help and see things change for the best soon, I really empathize with y'all. Raise your hand if you’d love for Cydnee to create a podcast where she speaks even more in-depth on historical occurrences! I could see a weekly 60-90 min unedited video of her speaking or educating on topics that are important to her. 🙋‍♂️
Also, I had professors and educators like you, in college, who were so passionate about the subject they taught that retaining knowledge was easy, and interesting. The best profs pretty much threw the overpriced, dry, and often inaccurate and propagandist textbooks in the trash, and found published journals, videos and so many other avenues to teach us information. There are things that shocked me in college to learn about.
Several of these professors would also create their own textbooks and tell the college what price they would be, which was often comparable to buying a hardback and sometime paperback novel. Others to get around the university’s slimy money schemes, would give out their textbooks in pieces, either physically or electronically. I wish more profs were hip to this.
Also, due to the types of profs I had, yes I would spend hours on Rate My Professor sussing out profs, I’m that person that when something historical pops up in a show or movie that was part of my major or minor or other electives I took, my friends look at me and tell me not to say anything. Of course, they know better, and they know they’re about to get a small history lesson. I don’t tolerate voluntary ignorance, even with myself.

You tell a complicated story really well and I love the way that every now and then you drop in an expression that you wouldn't hear in the financial press but that captures the situation really well.

The lying and “fake it til you make it” is certainly a thing in Silicon Valley, happens all the time. However to be such a toxic lying ass environment to drive a person to take their life? Unforgivable. Makes me furious.

Love your version of these stories!
Only minor “fact” checks from me, I’ve watched tons of documentaries on this compulsive manipulator, a fascinating case study...
The pronunciation of it is Si-li-kun Valley (not sili-cone like the implant), not obvious at all but good to know.
The patch she conceived in her college days, which she took to that professor/only female scientist she ever consulted was meant to take a sample of blood *through the skin* (top layer of the epidermis), so it was her first idea for testing the blood...but yeah, it wasn’t practical or possible to take a proper sample that way for many reasons, as you & the female expert said!
And when you said early on that the Edison didn’t work so the scientists had to do “manual testing” for the investors in the basement, it’s good to clarify it was just them running the tests in typical blood testing machines (which were massive, not small/compact like the Edison), just as you’d find in a Lab Corp or Quest Diagnostics lab. Same as they had to do at Walgreens later.
Lastly, while she admired all of these famous inventors, it was specifically Steve Jobs she directly imitated, down to the black turtlenecks/minimalistic wardrobe and severe treatment of her staff while remaining relentlessly focused on the mission. That was his trademark, too.
This whole thing was doomed to fail because she was trying to enter the software/tech world with a healthcare/medical product. Square peg, round hole. Millions of dollars later, they started to see past her unblinking stare 😳 and endless enthusiasm. It’s shocking how many people she persuaded...and fooled. And that voice was fake AF, she felt she’d be taken more seriously with a deeper voice (not untrue, women with high pitched voices are seen as childlike. 😞)
Thank you for getting the word out about her! She’s quite the...historical figure. Also, I’m all for a longer video, loves me some details, but if you think 30 minutes or so is best, do it! 🤗

    • @CydBee
      @CydBee  4 роки тому +16

Thank you for sharing!! I will probably keep them at 30 mins. It takes SO LONG to film and edit these already, I can’t imagine making them longer

Cydnee Black I can only imagine! Doing the makeup simultaneously only adds to it, I’m sure. This story is just so complex, I hope folks look at the great docs out there that cover it in depth if they wanna get the full scoop - it’s like hours of info, interviews from her former employees, journalists, and more. I think you gave just enough info to get people informed about the main points, which is perfect.
We need to avoid allowing someone like this to get so far again, she was playing with real people’s lives!! (Those taking the blood tests...I care way less about the millionaires like the DeVos family losing a few mill, they’re fine.) also, makes me a touch more upset that it’s a woman and it was ALL men who trusted her...
