I did my bachelors degree on self determination with the focus on Hungary and let's just say "self determination" was tossed out the window when the entente looked at Hungary. Like Transylvania where most of the populace was Hungarian until the Romanians inflated their numbers either by falsifying it or moving people into the region after/during the tumultious war against the Hungarian Soviet Republic (yes there was a coup after the newly established Republic of Hungary was established which tried to retake all their lost/occupied terrirory) By this time the trianon treaty hadn't been fully completed yet, even if some Hungarian intellectuals pleaded their case and gave evidence to their claims, it mattered little when the situation at home was war war war. In all 30% of all magyar found themselves outside of hungary, and somewhere about 66% of their land was lost. Then came a lot of displased hungarians and then a famine.... yeah times weren't good for them, and frankly i don't blame them, they took the major blow for the then Austro-hungarian state who the entente saw as the aggressor
@@Soos_dude1 down the Polish Habsburg tree, you can force Hungary to elect Otto Von Habsburg and then form a personal union with Hungary. This is because britain was the one (mainly) who was deciding who to put in charge, and well, britain likes their navies, and since horthy was a decorated admiral of Austria-Hungary, they thought he was kinda better than the other guy, who wasn't an admiral
Horthy was never put in charge by the British, he was the defense minister in the anti-communist counter government, he managed to build up his own military and took control of Western Hungary. Once the Romanian military evacuated Budapest he marched on the city and the Hungarian nobility accepted him as the new country leader. And because the Treaty of Trianon forbid Habsburg restoration he remained the Regent of Hungary. The British didn't just "selected" him to be the new leader, the Hungarian parliament voted him into power.
