You know what some of these streamers could have done, they could have done a live stream and made it so the comments were filtered by a payment of a hundred bucks per person, because that alone would keep people out of the chat, only the really desperate would pay that. And if a bunch of other people start showing up, raise the price again and again. Eventually the price will be far too high, and nobody will pay, in the streamer will have no problem streaming the game for millions of people. But I don't know if anyone's done this yet.

UA-cam and Reddit are the closest things to social media that I use…I dumped Facebook five years ago for my own mental health and have never looked back. Engaging directly with your friends and loved ones one-on-one - in real, direct, substantive conversation - is where it’s at. Doing your own research, thinking critically, making informed judgements outside of the social media circus - is where it’s at! I honestly wasn’t even aware how much this had ‘blown up’ until I saw these videos from you and other UA-camrs I follow.
People never seem to learn that boycotting on the basis of "moral harm" never works. It failed for Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft Auto, and now Hogwarts Legacy. It seems that people will always think their cause is the exception and it never works out.

People back in the day rallied against GTA and MK due to the violence, etc not because a creator would be making monetary and cultural gains despite them regularly marginalising a vulnerable part of our society. I'm not judging people for buying and playing this game but equating, 'I don't like this game due to its violence' to 'i don't like this game due to the fact that a person who will benefit substantially from it is actively involved in the discrimination of a vulnerable group within our aociety' are completely different arguments. What I meant was that we've seen similar situations with people having a reason to be against any piece of media, be it a book, movie, or video game, and no matter how valid their reasoning for being against it may or may not be it backfires partly because it grants the media in question more exposure and partly because not everyone shares the exact same moral values. JK Rowling is already rich so many people who disagree with her views don't see much of a point in a boycott. Not to mention that by buying the game they are also supporting a relatively small development team that are definitely not rich, ensuring that they will be able to find funding for their later projects and their continued employment. Yes, the general reasons for being against Mortal Kombat and GTA were different than those against Hogwarts Legacy, but the thought process is the same: this game violates my morals so it shouldn't be allowed to exist. It's not that either set of morals are inherently wrong, it's just pointless to try and force them on others.

I've watched Asmongold's videos of him playing it and it looks good, but I'm not into Harry Potter, so for me it's the kind of game that's fun to watch others play, but I wouldn't play.

Before this game came along, I was completely uninterested and indifferent to the entire Potterverse. I knew virtually nothing about the IP. I picked this game up because a) it genuinely looked interesting and well-made b) I'm a sucker for open-worlds c) I have to admit... there was a sense of spite for all the EXTREME virtue-signalling and soapboxing nutjobs. It's abundantly clear the dev team poured their hearts and souls into this. The production value and the love from the dev team are obvious for all to see. I respect the hell out of that. I'm about 5 hours in so far, and this ignorant, non-fan is absolutely LOVING the game.
I wish we could as well, but unfortunately in todays world both sides of the political spectrum are so seated in their views that they view anything opposite of their view as an objective moral travesty and wholly evil. Sure there are some things that are that black and white, like allowing (actual) fascism to blossom under free speech, or whether or not people should have ready, free access to healthcare. But 99% of issues are not black and white and there is at least some form of grey that needs to be accounted for and compromises made.

Harry potter came out when I was ten. To say that it was everywhere is an understatement. Ive been waiting 22+ years to visit Hogwarts. Nobody is going to ruin this for me.
I find it interesting that no one on the extreme left is talking about what their side has gained. They talk about the royalties Rowling will get from the merchandise of the game but nothing about how much organizations who help trans or LGBT has gained from donations because of the game. The amount going to the trans-cause is enormous from what I can tell and they would certainly have not earned that much if this game had not existed. Why boycott a game that can help millions of transpeople because of one famous writer who talks too much? Doesn’t the trans community have more to gain than loose especially if it do it correctly, getting Warner Bros with them?
TL DR: The boycott movement did exactly the opposite of what it intended. It shed light on a ridiculous notion some people have about having to mirror people's beliefs. So I bought the game and gifted it away, a game I had no interest in, a person who did not read these books. Good job petulant people! I'm sure this controversy did to many what it did to me. I saw there was a boycott movement over JK Rowling's comments. I went and looked up those statements. Came to the conclusion that some people were being extremely overly sensitive about one person's personal beliefs on controversial issues. Thought the boycott was ridiculous. Saw how media "journalists" and outlets were covering the game. Saw people attempting to bully others for playing a game and not mirroring their own personal beliefs. Saw people throwing tantrums over people playing the game. I bought the game and gifted it away, and now I won't visit those websites who threw their responsibilities and ethics away over nothing.
I lost one of my most valued friends because I played this game. Part of me feels bad that they don't consider me an ally or friend anymore. Another part of me is angry that we can't just agree to disagree anymore. What is pissing me off about this whole situation is that the very people who are saying that buying this game is harmful are being harmful themselves by bullying and harrassing. LegacyKillaHD made the excellent point that no-one boycotted Call of Duty for "supporting sexual harrasment". ALSO, I don't think me not buying the game will bankrupt her. Also I'm convinced that the vast majority of the people who were part of the viewship on twitch are the very haters trying to bring it down.

I find it to be a incredibly useful place to set up big get togethers and also quite useful for one on one messaging. And so just to clarify one more time I do not use discord for its social media outlet capabilities, I don't meet new people on there and I don't look at other people's statuses, I use it to talk one on one with friends, the reason I dislike social media so much is because it very often takes our minds off of what matters more and causes us to sometimes compare our own lives to that of others who post about only the good things in there lives.

I've read quite a bit of JK Rowling's views and while I do think she's a hardcore feminist, I don't think she actually hates trans women, but she does want to preserve some key spaces for biological women, such as women's shelters, prisons and sports. Judging by what I know of her actions, she does oppose self-ID, she contributes to a lot of charities to boost education, she's contributed to saving women threatened by the Taliban, and she's opened a shelter for abused women that excludes men and trans women. If most people read what she actually does with her money, they'd probably agree she's way more Harry Potter and way less Voldemort.

Targeted coordinated attacks on streamers included death threats, doxxing, unreal levels of personal harassment over playing a video game. There is drama alright and some of it is going to end up in courts in the public eye.
Very good point about people moving towards individual critics instead of outlets like, for example, IGN. I don't promote competing channels, even though it's friendly competition, but there are a few reviewers who I really trust to give a thorough and honest review, and they also don't use a number system. Of course, this channel is one that I trust as well, and I appreciate how this channel digs a bit deeper into things going on. Truthfully there are maybe 3 channels total that I watch, and then 1 more that I watch for more retrospective hour long essays on things like "Baldur's Gate, or Fallout: New Vegas.

I'm mostly avoiding any of this drama, but it still pops up in my feed through news articles. It's crazy to me how similar it all feels to gamergate and depression quest, what with all the accusations about reviews, from the language used in the reviews, to the scores being given, and all the accusations surrounding the validity of said reviews. Accusations of forced diversity from PinkNews was absolutely the strangest one. Like, I remember seeing that about dragon age Inquisition from the opposite side of the political spectrum. It's a very strange environment surrounding this game. Not even sure I have a particularly strong stance on this game at all, or why anyone would, beyond Rowling. The game seems fine enough as a game, and I don't think you can smear the devs for their work. That's why I'll always enjoy your content, Matty. Just getting to what people want to know.

For the love of Merlin, Matty, Avalanche made Disney Infinity - all versions - including all the toys. They broke into the Toys to Life genre after the successes of Toy Story 3 and Cars 2, overtook Skylanders, and made a Billion dollars for Disney on that product too. Anyone who thought Avalanche didn't have the chops just wasn't paying attention. Ask Colin Moriarty of Sacred Symbols. He has his pulse on the industry like no one else does and was calling the game's likely success over two years ago.
I'm not a big Harry Potter fan but I was still intrigued enough to give the game a shot and I have absolutely no regrets buying it on day one for full price. Needless to say, I'm enjoying the heck out of it.

Making this comment after the Hogwarts boycott failed AND after the Bud Light boycott SUCCEEDED. One of the reasons, I think, the beer boycott succeeded and the video game boycott failed, is because it's easier to make a beer than it is a video game. You make a beer and you share it with others who will enjoy it, even make your own microbrewery. Meanwhile it takes more working to make a video game and to make it playable and accessible.
What's REALLY positive about the success of this game is how it sends the message that single player games without microtransactions are attractive to the customer base. Hopefully WB takes notes.
there is a deluxe edition upgrade, which is a microtransaction, but yes, hopefully the success came from the basic edition and sends the right message, which it wont bc lets face it WBGames does not give a shit as long as they make bank at the end of the day.

You know what some of these streamers could have done, they could have done a live stream and made it so the comments were filtered by a payment of a hundred bucks per person, because that alone would keep people out of the chat, only the really desperate would pay that.

UA-cam and Reddit are the closest things to social media that I use…I dumped Facebook five years ago for my own mental health and have never looked back. Engaging directly with your friends and loved ones one-on-one - in real, direct, substantive conversation - is where it’s at. Doing your own research, thinking critically, making informed judgements outside of the social media circus - is where it’s at!

People never seem to learn that boycotting on the basis of "moral harm" never works. It failed for Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft Auto, and now Hogwarts Legacy. It seems that people will always think their cause is the exception and it never works out.

People back in the day rallied against GTA and MK due to the violence, etc not because a creator would be making monetary and cultural gains despite them regularly marginalising a vulnerable part of our society. What I meant was that we've seen similar situations with people having a reason to be against any piece of media, be it a book, movie, or video game, and no matter how valid their reasoning for being against it may or may not be it backfires partly because it grants the media in question more exposure and partly because not everyone shares the exact same moral values. JK Rowling is already rich so many people who disagree with her views don't see much of a point in a boycott. Not to mention that by buying the game they are also supporting a relatively small development team that are definitely not rich, ensuring that they will be able to find funding for their later projects and their continued employment. Yes, the general reasons for being against Mortal Kombat and GTA were different than those against Hogwarts Legacy, but the thought process is the same: this game violates my morals so it shouldn't be allowed to exist. It's not that either set of morals are inherently wrong, it's just pointless to try and force them on others.

Dude when you get to the flying part, it's so fun. I killed about an hour today just zooming around not doing any quests or anything but barnstorming castle ruins and divebombing spider nests.
I've watched Asmongold's videos of him playing it and it looks good, but I'm not into Harry Potter, so for me it's the kind of game that's fun to watch others play, but I wouldn't play.

Before this game came along, I was completely uninterested and indifferent to the entire Potterverse. I knew virtually nothing about the IP.
I picked this game up because
a) it genuinely looked interesting and well-made
b) I'm a sucker for open-worlds
c) I have to admit... there was a sense of spite for all the EXTREME virtue-signalling and soapboxing nutjobs.
It's abundantly clear the dev team poured their hearts and souls into this. The production value and the love from the dev team are obvious for all to see. I respect the hell out of that. I'm about 5 hours in so far, and this ignorant, non-fan is absolutely LOVING the game.

I wish we could as well, but unfortunately in todays world both sides of the political spectrum are so seated in their views that they view anything opposite of their view as an objective moral travesty and wholly evil. Sure there are some things that are that black and white, like allowing (actual) fascism to blossom under free speech, or whether or not people should have ready, free access to healthcare. But 99% of issues are not black and white and there is at least some form of grey that needs to be accounted for and compromises made.

I find it interesting that no one on the extreme left is talking about what their side has gained. They talk about the royalties Rowling will get from the merchandise of the game but nothing about how much organizations who help trans or LGBT has gained from donations because of the game. TL DR: The boycott movement did exactly the opposite of what it intended. It shed light on a ridiculous notion some people have about having to mirror people's beliefs. So I bought the game and gifted it away, a game I had no interest in, a person who did not read these books. Good job petulant people!
I'm sure this controversy did to many what it did to me. I saw there was a boycott movement over JK Rowling's comments. I went and looked up those statements. Came to the conclusion that some people were being extremely overly sensitive about one person's personal beliefs on controversial issues. Thought the boycott was ridiculous. Saw how media "journalists" and outlets were covering the game. Saw people attempting to bully others for playing a game and not mirroring their own personal beliefs. Saw people throwing tantrums over people playing the game. I bought the game and gifted it away, and now I won't visit those websites who threw their responsibilities and ethics away over nothing.
I lost one of my most valued friends because I played this game. Part of me feels bad that they don't consider me an ally or friend anymore. Another part of me is angry that we can't just agree to disagree anymore.
What is pissing me off about this whole situation is that the very people who are saying that buying this game is harmful are being harmful themselves by bullying and harrassing. LegacyKillaHD made the excellent point that no-one boycotted Call of Duty for "supporting sexual harrasment". ALSO, I don't think me not buying the game will bankrupt her.

@@jurjcluners8490 ah I see, I'm very sorry let me clarify then, I do not use discord for its community aspects, instead I use it to talk with my friends and only them. I find it to be a incredibly useful place to set up big get togethers and also quite useful for one on one messaging. I wouldn't really say it's a site on the level of Twitter or SnapChat but I do see your point in that it is a social media outlet for community's. And so just to clarify one more time I do not use discord for its social media outlet capabilities, I don't meet new people on there and I don't look at other people's statuses, I use it to talk one on one with friends, the reason I dislike social media so much is because it very often takes our minds off of what matters more and causes us to sometimes compare our own lives to that of others who post about only the good things in there lives.

People seem to have forgotten that one of the things the Harry Potter books demonstrated is that the outcasts can be heroes to all because the person who wrote it has a different opinion on a controversial subject.

I've read quite a bit of JK Rowling's views and while I do think she's a hardcore feminist, I don't think she actually hates trans women, but she does want to preserve some key spaces for biological women, such as women's shelters, prisons and sports. Judging by what I know of her actions, she does oppose self-ID, she contributes to a lot of charities to boost education, she's contributed to saving women threatened by the Taliban, and she's opened a shelter for abused women that excludes men and trans women. If most people read what she actually does with her money, they'd probably agree she's way more Harry Potter and way less Voldemort.
Funny thing is I wouldn’t have thought about this game until well after launch except for the boycott controversy. I’m playing the game and except for some lag, I’m having fun playing and streaming it.
That’s why I play a game for myself before I judge. I like watching reviews to get people’s opinion but in the end I have to play myself.

You kinda hit on a similar point- but what makes all of this worse is that, by trying to be extremely progressive and supportive of a cause- this situation has actually likely created MORE problems between people with differing beliefs. Targeted coordinated attacks on streamers included death threats, doxxing, unreal levels of personal harassment over playing a video game. There is drama alright and some of it is going to end up in courts in the public eye.
Very good point about people moving towards individual critics instead of outlets like, for example, IGN. I don't promote competing channels, even though it's friendly competition, but there are a few reviewers who I really trust to give a thorough and honest review, and they also don't use a number system.
Of course, this channel is one that I trust as well, and I appreciate how this channel digs a bit deeper into things going on. Truthfully there are maybe 3 channels total that I watch, and then 1 more that I watch for more retrospective hour long essays on things like "Baldur's Gate, or Fallout: New Vegas.
It just goes to show that people really don't care what happens on twitter.
All this game did was show how social media and most mainstream "journalism" isn't real, and the vast majority of people don't give a fuck about the crybabies online.

Not sure how a videogame makes you unsupportive of your right to exist. It's a video game.. I'm personally not going to get it because I've never been into HP. I know how shitty Rowling is, but others don't. A lot of people stay away from twitter drama or just drama in general. So some don't even know and just bought it because they had fond memories of the books/movies. Also, I don't think Rowling even did much with the game but I could be wrong. It's kind of like never watching or playing anything Disney related because the founder was a piece of garbage sexist/racist. He's dead now but it shouldn't matter right? I'm mostly avoiding any of this drama, but it still pops up in my feed through news articles. It's crazy to me how similar it all feels to gamergate and depression quest, what with all the accusations about reviews, from the language used in the reviews, to the scores being given, and all the accusations surrounding the validity of said reviews.
Accusations of forced diversity from PinkNews was absolutely the strangest one. Like, I remember seeing that about dragon age Inquisition from the opposite side of the political spectrum. It's a very strange environment surrounding this game. Not even sure I have a particularly strong stance on this game at all, or why anyone would, beyond Rowling. The game seems fine enough as a game, and I don't think you can smear the devs for their work.

For the love of Merlin, Matty, Avalanche made Disney Infinity - all versions - including all the toys. They broke into the Toys to Life genre after the successes of Toy Story 3 and Cars 2, overtook Skylanders, and made a Billion dollars for Disney on that product too.
Anyone who thought Avalanche didn't have the chops just wasn't paying attention. Ask Colin Moriarty of Sacred Symbols. He has his pulse on the industry like no one else does and was calling the game's likely success over two years ago.
I'm not a big Harry Potter fan but I was still intrigued enough to give the game a shot and I have absolutely no regrets buying it on day one for full price. Needless to say, I'm enjoying the heck out of it.

Sorry Matty, but no. The initial boycott wasn't for a "cause", it was never for a "cause". The bullying and harassment. That was always the purpose. It was always, "I don't like the person who made this game, so YOU can't play it." Making this comment after the Hogwarts boycott failed AND after the Bud Light boycott SUCCEEDED. One of the reasons, I think, the beer boycott succeeded and the video game boycott failed, is because it's easier to make a beer than it is a video game. You make a beer and you share it with others who will enjoy it, even make your own microbrewery. Meanwhile it takes more working to make a video game and to make it playable and accessible.
When does anyone ever say anything positive? Could care less what people have to say or think. I love the game!
