I wish the Cobra RX685 had a microUSB charging plug also. If you have two separate camps, and only one charging cradle, only one camp can charge the their radio.
It's better without a cradle. When camping, you can charge the Motorola's with a portable battery with a usb cable like you would for your phone. Also, it's a smaller footprint for packing stuff... no bulky cradle to pack.
I'm not sure I understand the desire for a charging cradle. If I am traveling, I want to travel light. A cradle is bulky to carry vs. just a cord, which can also be the same cord you use to charge your phone etc. Just bring one cord, or replaceable batteries (I know that the Motorola can use regular AA batteries if need be). Also, any word on the performance of the two? ie. Voice clarity and distance? I think these are more important aspects of a walkie talkie. (ie. I didn't get a walkie talkie for it to be a flash light)
The new model T802 is even better. It has replaced micro-USB with USB-C. Now we can have just USB-C to charge phones and walkie talkie. I don’t need charge cradle. Charge cradle is a waste in my opinion.
Of the two which has the best radio performance. In my experience Motorola usualy out performs other makes particularly radios of this price point. Both of these radios are built down to a price. I'm in the UK using pmr446 and more professional radios, offering what you require, are available from Motorola and also Kenwood but of course they cost more for a single radio. Thanks for sharing your experience of the Motorola and Cobra radios.
@@redjohn20001 at the time, the esthetics and utility mattered more to me than range. They both purported to support the same distance and seemingly had the same antenna so it wasn’t a big concern for me. But in hindsight, I should have done a range test as well. If there was a variance, max probably would have been a mile or two. Nothing drastic. But still worth knowing.
I have the cobra. Very nice walkies. I was turkey hunting a couple weeks ago and I dropped mine in the creek. It still runs just fine. Not to mention the light on them is really good. I use mine in my tent and can talk to my buddies around 1000 yards away. I can't stand the Roger beep. First thing I turned off
Kudos for taking your time brother I used to work for Motorola back in 2000 when GPRS was booming. Since they moved their design to middle east, I lost my faith. Cobras and midlands has been in the market since I remember ' 44+ years ago '
I couldn't find any charging base for the Motorola T801, does it even exist for this model? maybe a charging base for some other model can be used for this one but I'm not sure
Most PTT buttons are designed for use with your thumb. Unfortunately, the T8xx series are capped under 1 watt, since there designed to use your phone to send location data, and text messages. The generation before those had a nice, thick rubber buttom so they can stand up. The Cobra definitely has a more professional look, and feel. Check out Cobra's older CXT lines. There water resistant, and float, and some can record 20 seconds of audio.
great review reminds me how I am as well haha I have the motorola 82 extreme but i am looking to get the DEWALT DXPMR800 have you heard about them ? I am looking for a 2w walkie what supposed to go longer than the 0.5w? and idea witch ones or the best out there ??? thanks
@@RKingis looks like the Murs radios or better than the normal pmr446 , its a 2w raidio and for sure will be longer range and clear sound the Retevis RT 47V
I appreciate the review, but the charging cradle issue was probably intentional, if you have to use the cradle you've locked into where the cradle is... if I issue these to my volunteer team, they're going to take them home, and they won't all have a cradle.
The problem that I have with Motorola T 800 / T803 models is that technically they’re only producing a max of 0.75 wattage Compared to motor rollers, older models T 600 that produce a maximum GMRS wattage of 1.31 and they float their pretty much waterproof the T800 if there is no cell service and you’re just depending on radio to radio because the wattage is significantly lower, you will tend to have problems penetrating through forest/woodland areas and urban environments if you are in a hot air balloon to another hot air balloon yeah you’ll get your 20 to 35 miles but that’s obviously not always the case. There are a pair of Midlands T290vp4 that produce 2.85 GMRS wattage power, but there’s no flashlight they don’t float they do come with a cradle to charge boat at a time and from the testing that I have done personally because there is basically almost triple the wattage of the 800 and double 600 from motor roller in heavy woodland areas and urban environments with buildings they will penetrate better for communication. An example same spot the 600s would only barely break radio silence the 290 VP can have a decent conversation about 75% clarity to me that’s the most important the transmission of the radio signal. I don’t care if there’s a flashlight if they float I just want that’s just me now. It doesn’t mean that they’re gonna be able to penetrate through. Let’s say three battleships in a row that a row made out of metal, but they are in my experience better than the motor rollers at least by 50% or better when testing in the same exact spot
Costco. 3 pack with a cradle for 2 units. Solved. Also, any radio standing up is too heavy. If you look at it the wrong way it falls over anyway. You’re splitting hairs with the thin factor. Video is a little dramatic on the trivial issues. Many reviews on the T801 and in many ways blows competition away for the price. I’ll give you the flashlight thing though!
I can’t understand why all shops didn’t want saying what is the max range for those models .. there is no any information about operating range anywhere..
Walmart sells universal tools if that makes any sense some are good some are horrible but I got those cobras myself and I can tell you they feel great and sound great too. Practicality over gimmicks
At the end of the day you’re buying it because you needed a walkie talkie. The talk button on the cobra just seems terrible, what if you have an emergency and the button isn’t registering

The loop on the bottom of the Motorola is for connecting a carabiner and attaching the radio to your backpack, gear or belt.

On most bubble pack FRS radios, just press Menu once, then push up/down, and press PTT at the channel you want.
