Part of your comms problem is polarization. Close range not too bad but when your pushing the distance it can affect performance. Keep your antenna vertical when xmiting.

I would argue that having two people on opposite mountains isn’t so real world. If they were in a neighborhood or a dense forest they would be lucky to get a signal at 2 miles.
I bought a pair of Motorola t800 to try and replace my Garmin. My rino is old and beat up. And I carry the phone anyway. keeping my hunting partners aware of my location was the most important feature for me. The Motorola app was not easy or quick to use and failed to work through 1/4 mile of flat wooded swamp. The Garmin started failing around 3 miles.
Thank you, thank you, thank you ! Finally someone tested the Garmin against another radio. We have been telling Garmin for years that the antenna set up is not making it. I wish they would put a standard SMA connector on top and move the GPS antenna. Users could choose which after market antenna works best. Cobra has applied to the FCC to make a radio that sends the GPS burst with a transmission. I hope they are successful. I hope you guys get to test them. Radioddity, and Retevis are making some very nicely priced GMRS radios. I hope that they incorporate the GPS mapping in one of their future radios.
Hey, Rick! Lima Carlie. This video doesn’t show it but the radio was held in several orientations. None worked well. Understand that they are supposed to be held vertically.
Anything with a fixed, non removable antenna will have extremely limited range. Also UHF is very poor for mountain and wooded terrain. VHF it's more suited for that. UHF is great for dealing with walls and city like areas.
SORRY my 5 watt and 45 watt radio do just fine on tower linkes everyday at 20 miles across three county's and when the east coast G M R S link there towers to are towers I can talk to Chicago ILL

We bought the T801's and hoping to try them out in the mountains between our cabin and our friend's cabin. They are a mile away. In city the range was bad and did not communicate. 35 mile range is a bit overzealous.
you need G M R S towers to do that and I do everyday 20 miles off a 60 watt tower as I go in at 45 watts and are tower's cover three county's and 6 different city's and yes it requires a F C C license to do as I do have.
Guys, I just came across your channel by accident. I’m only about two minutes into the video and I can’t wait to watch the rest. I also can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos. But I gotta ask you one question why in the world do you have these two gigantic microphone sitting out in the middle of your shot? I get using those kind of Mike’s in a podcast or something or a radio show her you can’t see the people, but those are very distracting. Why wouldn’t you just have a nice Lavalier mic on and no one even notices? Anyway, I’m saying there’s a complete good faith and I’m not trying to be a jerk at all. Glad you liked the video and welcome aboard! We used those mics because they seemed to have slightly better audio in studio than a quality lav mic. We're usually wearing lav mics when outside though. -Rusty
Great video, I own 5 Garmin Rinos, for hiking groups. BTW your mics are picking up your thumps and bangs of the table your on. I’m guessing the mic arms are attached to the table. Keep up the great videos. 👍🏼
@@Equip2Endure I did not compare them with anything else. I love the rinos for all of the other features, track back, photo tagging, text messaging to other rinos it’s has so many features. I own the newer 755t models. I believe 16 miles was pushing it for both radios, but the Motorola really shined in the communication department.
I have the Midland GTX 1000 and the BTech GMRS. The nice thing about the BTech is you can change the antenna. I would like to see a comparison test against the BTech with a Nagoya antenna
Just goes to show you Motorola solutions is the king when it comes to two way communication. I use there business radios and they have the best range capability I’ve seen in a 5 watt handheld.
A friend of mine and I did 6 miles from my home in Layton, Ut to Fernwood Park above Layton with texting. We're trying to incorporate the T800s in our area emcomm. It will happen as the people using them learn how to use them. With a cell phone connected via bluetooth to the T800, and connected to a hotspot and a Ubiquiti node via AREDN text from one app and be copied and pasted onto the other. AREDN is a ham radio service.
You guys said about trying to text on the Motorola @ .5watt and it didn't work, then ya said it may have worked on 2 watt. So if your going to do a review WHY would ya do it half assed? Why didn't ya try it on 2watt? Why didn't ya tell or show people if the Garmin showed your location on the map? And lastly why do ya hold the radio like a gangster? Hold the damn thing straight up & down
They work much better generally speaking. Look at Summits on the Air. That’s essentially what they are doing, and some people with HTs (handie talkies) have been able to hit people at 20+ miles. Ham radios can also attach WAY better antennas, so they could’ve used a directional antenna to improve things drastically
I paid $10, took a very easy test, and got an FCC license for 2 highly used amateur radio frequencies. It's very easy to get the license. And it last 10 years.

Yes. But if you don't have some training, you won't be able to use it, at least to radioamateurs (you have to pray that someone answers your calls). If you use ham radios on ham frequencies with your friends, you'll probably be jammed by someone not happy with that. Altough, if a ham notices that you are in trouble, he'll try to help you. It goes with the activity.
Been looking into the rockytalkies. Do you guys have any experience with those? Seem to have the best overall reviews for Emergencies and out in the woods.
This vid is two years old. I wonder if anything has changed. I was considering a Rino 750t or 755t, but there aren't many reviews at all on either; and this vid is the only one that actually tests the radio. I think I'll just hold off until I can get more info. Six to eight hundred bucks is a lot of dough. I'm surprised there aren't more options out there with the GPS/Maps/Comms combo
Just get the Technican license from your local ham radio club. It's very easy. You just need to have basic knowledge of electronics, and remember the FCC guidelines and regulations. It gets harder, when you go for the General license. I paid $10 and easily got a 10 year license.
Im sure that 2 radios with different tones key up, you will hear the other radio or conversation because all the tone does is break the squelch to all it to hear the frequency...think of it as a stop and go light...everyone can see it but only those who are supposed to go at that time and tone can...but you can crash into someone else already going. The other issue when testing is that on the left side, you are by a bunch of trees and the other one was all clear of them....then you kept changing the HT's from vertical to horizontal reducing the effectiveness of the radio as if you guys are using cell phones. If I had mountains in my area without trees I would buy a pair to show the difference when you have trees, and rotate your radios when transmitting and receiving.
Channels 8-14 (frs) will always be 1/2 watt and cannot be changed to a higher power level due to FCC regulations. On higher powered mobile radios, those same channels (8-14) will be receive only or non-exsistent.

Hmmm. You can use ham radios w/o a license. Not legally, but if you use them while camping or other outings, the FCC isn't going to do squat. If you're going to use a repeater, that's different. Repeater owners require users to be licensed or you can't play with their ball. I was going to get licensed myself, but no one's on the repeater in my area. I leave my radio on for hours and though it covers a wide area, no one is online.
If I understand neither one of radios are repeater capable, right? That Garmin looks like a great tool to have, but in a real scenario, you're not going to get the range as advertised.
Getting a lot of feedback from your phones. While you're talking on both. It's like when you phone a radio station and they tell listeners to turn down their volume of the radio.
@@christopherwalsh7700 I got my first ham license (novice) at 13 in 1961. I haven't been active in a long time but got my extra class license a few years ago just to check if off my bucket list. I also got a GMRS license when the fee was reduced. I only use it in a car club for group rides. Mostly I use a pair of FRS radios for "where you at" calls to my wife when we go shopping. 😁
In my opinion, the take away from all of this is no matter what you have make sure you have a system, and make sure that system works for your needs when you need it. No point spending $100000 on Harris military comms gear if it doesn't fit your needs at all. As much as I sometimes malign Motorola at their consumer product level having FRS radios of any sort is far better than shouting or two cans on a string.
for gmrs 16 miles is too far. it will work at 3 miles. I think with the distance you tried using Rino, it's good enough. because what we need is short-range radio communication, especially in the forest. too many barriers...
Consumer grade GMRS and FRS radios have an inherent weakness that is not apparent to the general public. The receivers, though very sensitive are not very well protected against signals well off channel. In an environment like where you were testing, there are other radio systems, most fairly high power in the UHF band, broadcasters in VHF and UHF bands. A Commercial radio like the police and fire services use, have additional filtering in the receiver, after the antenna, which block signals which are out of band. These undesired signals 'sap" the gain of the receiver and reduce the effective sensitivity. If tested in a lab, the radios will produce sensitivity and power output to suggest a 16 or 32 mile range, but in reality, it is a fraction. You might do this test again in a truly desolate location and have better results. However if you are line of sight with any radio or TV transmission towers, chances are the radios will again falter. I use surplus commercial public safety (police) radios which were designed for an urban environment (and cost many thousands of dollars new) and have had great results.
I am curious, say you have a 5 watt radio, and it is required to have a license to use, why does it matter if it is in an emergency, disaster, etc and you really need help or report an emergency?
When they say emergency they don't mean ww3. They literally mean anything you'd call 911 for more or less and radio happens to be the only option available to you go ahead and use it. Generally if you're using the emergency clause in good faith you're not going to get in big trouble especially if the radio you have is pretty programed for appropriate HAM/GMRS stuff. Step on the military or other critical infustructure for anything short of life and death and you'll probably have a bad day. HAM tech is honestly easy to get if you're interested in preparedness coms, don't just assume you can't. Might even find a non emergency use format like texting you fam from the trail using aprs where your cell phone doesn't work to say yer running late but okay.
The Garmin is TWO (2) watts on FMRS and 1/2 watt (that's point 5 - .5 - 5 tenths of a watt) on FRS, rather than FIVE watts according to the title overlay at 2:24 mins.
The Garmin Rino is a 5 watt radio on channels 1-7 and 15-22 if you select the 5 watt setting. All FRS and GMRS radios are limited to 1/2 watts on channels 8-14.
frs = two tin cans and string.... gmrs not much better unless you got a repeater with 9 db gain antenna 300 ft.high 50 watts with preamp in urban areas
Excellent video and yes these values can change depending upon Where You Are for example test out of UBC when a friend that was driving to a mountain 52 km away well almost line of sight basically 30 MI and the signal went true a Uniden from Canadian Tire red and black this was transmitting between two watts and 500 MW the signal was there however because it was weak based on hypothesis I knew the signal will travel because it is literally almost the line of sight minus the curvature of the Earth I have an altitude from UBC at 300 ft and the altitude of my friend was 3,000 ft up on a mountain basically nothing blocking the signal from traveling through however monitor Button had to be put off basically eliminating the squash and just listening to the static the signal went true you would be surprised what you can do with these radios even I had another friend who was a electrical engineer and he had Motorola the same model in the city we can do about 5 MI and from SFU to downtown Vancouver roughly 10 MI the signal does go through so of course it all depends on your territory I also suspect that you could do more range you literally have to have pure line of sight Google map of course and eliminate all obstacles out of the way at the same time you can try to modify the antenna or you can add up a counterpoise to the negative side of your battery a wire of about 6 in half a wave will be about 12:35 right inches you may get more range however even speaking to someone with the same model they're not bad little radios definitely okay the Chinese make model you were showing definitely has more power however you would be surprised that even with 500 milliwatts that signal from that mountain to UBC traveled and made it true 30 MI of course these were specific and unique conditions thank you and 73
@@VicGreenBitcoin Well, besides being in the ham band in the US, PMR446 radios are usually capped at half a watt, whereas FRS is 2watts & GMRS at 5-50watts, but both are capped at half a watt on 8-14.

I'm probably not the first to say this, but during a natural disaster, or God forbid in some type of surprise attack that can happen anywhere on this planet these days, do you think anyone with a Baofeng will care if they have a license or not?
I have a question, if there is a natural disaster, if the Cel Towers are down.... if the t*sh is hitting the fan.....will the FCC really be worried about who has a license? The reason I ask is that if I am planning for doomsday, I'd want the radio that gives me the best chance to reach someone or communicate with Family even nearby.... would I get a ticket or worse yet, thrown in jail, if I escape the zombies and nuclear (pronounced Nook-you-ler) Fallout, and still come out on top unscathed...will Uncle Sam really be waiting for me to bring me in for failing to have a license? All that being said, are there any of the unlicensed radios that I can use that go at least a mile or two even in the city?
GMRS is your best bet the license is cheap now and no test good for 10 years and the immediate family. The radios themselves will cost you more. As to what radios I suggest "notarubicon"s videos for tons of info but the newer wide band Midland micromobiles are the best easy to use reliable coms imho. Handheld probably a wuxon something. Really though I know you don't want to hear it but reliable coms take research,knowledge,and feild testing your gear before the emergency.
Look up P25 motorola radio. Almost all emergency services have gone digital and encrypted radios which means no. .New York had these fancy radios before 911 and they had trouble with them. The fire fighters had gone back to an older radio system and when 911 happened. Police couldn't talk to the older firefighters radios which depended on a repeater system that was on the world trade center and got knocked out. New York's dooms day communication bunker was next to the world trade complex and became worthless too.

Persons equipped with GMRS radios are often involved in emergency search and rescue, by the way that Garmin Rino is used a lot because of the GPS map.

FRS can't have removable antennas, so you would need a GMRS license.

Those are crippled on purpose by Motorola. The T4xx series can do close to 2 watts with alkaline batteries.

Why would you call the licensing fee a "fine"? That's just bizarre. FCC literally regulates the airwaves so that it remains usable for everyone.

It's very easy. You just need to have basic knowledge of electronics, and remember the FCC guidelines and regulations.
It gets harder, when you go for the General license.
I paid $10 and easily got a 10 year license.
Volume on you mics are off dude on the left is too loud or dude on the right is too low.
Im sure that 2 radios with different tones key up, you will hear the other radio or conversation because all the tone does is break the squelch to all it to hear the frequency...think of it as a stop and go light...everyone can see it but only those who are supposed to go at that time and tone can...but you can crash into someone else already going. The other issue when testing is that on the left side, you are by a bunch of trees and the other one was all clear of them....then you kept changing the HT's from vertical to horizontal reducing the effectiveness of the radio as if you guys are using cell phones. If I had mountains in my area without trees I would buy a pair to show the difference when you have trees, and rotate your radios when transmitting and receiving.
The stronger signal usually wins.

Channels 8-14 (frs) will always be 1/2 watt and cannot be changed to a higher power level due to FCC regulations. On higher powered mobile radios, those same channels (8-14) will be receive only or non-exsistent.
I think it's because the repeater inputs for GMRS are sandwiched in there.

FRS, and GMRS share all 22 channels.
Any radio with a decent range requires a licence. The "basic" Amateur radio licence is easy to take and pass.

Hmmm. You can use ham radios w/o a license. Not legally, but if you use them while camping or other outings, the FCC isn't going to do squat. If you're going to use a repeater, that's different. Repeater owners require users to be licensed or you can't play with their ball. I was going to get licensed myself, but no one's on the repeater in my area. I leave my radio on for hours and though it covers a wide area, no one is online.
It is a self policing community.
If I understand neither one of radios are repeater capable, right? That Garmin looks like a great tool to have, but in a real scenario, you're not going to get the range as advertised.

I also got a GMRS license when the fee was reduced. I only use it in a car club for group rides. Mostly I use a pair of FRS radios for "where you at" calls to my wife when we go shopping. 😁
In my opinion, the take away from all of this is no matter what you have make sure you have a system, and make sure that system works for your needs when you need it.
No point spending $100000 on Harris military comms gear if it doesn't fit your needs at all.
As much as I sometimes malign Motorola at their consumer product level having FRS radios of any sort is far better than shouting or two cans on a string.

for gmrs 16 miles is too far. it will work at 3 miles. I think with the distance you tried using Rino, it's good enough. because what we need is short-range radio communication, especially in the forest. too many barriers...

Consumer grade GMRS and FRS radios have an inherent weakness that is not apparent to the general public. The receivers, though very sensitive are not very well protected against signals well off channel. In an environment like where you were testing, there are other radio systems, most fairly high power in the UHF band, broadcasters in VHF and UHF bands. A Commercial radio like the police and fire services use, have additional filtering in the receiver, after the antenna, which block signals which are out of band. These undesired signals 'sap" the gain of the receiver and reduce the effective sensitivity. If tested in a lab, the radios will produce sensitivity and power output to suggest a 16 or 32 mile range, but in reality, it is a fraction. You might do this test again in a truly desolate location and have better results. However if you are line of sight with any radio or TV transmission towers, chances are the radios will again falter. I use surplus commercial public safety (police) radios which were designed for an urban environment (and cost many thousands of dollars new) and have had great results.
I am curious, say you have a 5 watt radio, and it is required to have a license to use, why does it matter if it is in an emergency, disaster, etc and you really need help or report an emergency?
When they say emergency they don't mean ww3. They literally mean anything you'd call 911 for more or less and radio happens to be the only option available to you go ahead and use it. Generally if you're using the emergency clause in good faith you're not going to get in big trouble especially if the radio you have is pretty programed for appropriate HAM/GMRS stuff. Step on the military or other critical infustructure for anything short of life and death and you'll probably have a bad day. HAM tech is honestly easy to get if you're interested in preparedness coms, don't just assume you can't. Might even find a non emergency use format like texting you fam from the trail using aprs where your cell phone doesn't work to say yer running late but okay.
The Garmin is TWO (2) watts on FMRS and 1/2 watt (that's point 5 - .5 - 5 tenths of a watt) on FRS, rather than FIVE watts according to the title overlay at 2:24 mins.
The Garmin Rino is a 5 watt radio on channels 1-7 and 15-22 if you select the 5 watt setting. All FRS and GMRS radios are limited to 1/2 watts on channels 8-14.
maybe you should hold the Radio Antenna vertical and not horizontal, it makes a huge difference

Excellent video and yes these values can change depending upon Where You Are for example test out of UBC when a friend that was driving to a mountain 52 km away well almost line of sight basically 30 MI and the signal went true a Uniden from Canadian Tire red and black this was transmitting between two watts and 500 MW the signal was there however because it was weak based on hypothesis I knew the signal will travel because it is literally almost the line of sight minus the curvature of the Earth I have an altitude from UBC at 300 ft and the altitude of my friend was 3,000 ft up on a mountain basically nothing blocking the signal from traveling through however monitor Button had to be put off basically eliminating the squash and just listening to the static the signal went true you would be surprised what you can do with these radios even I had another friend who was a electrical engineer and he had Motorola the same model in the city we can do about 5 MI and from SFU to downtown Vancouver roughly 10 MI the signal does go through so of course it all depends on your territory I also suspect that you could do more range you literally have to have pure line of sight Google map of course and eliminate all obstacles out of the way at the same time you can try to modify the antenna or you can add up a counterpoise to the negative side of your battery a wire of about 6 in half a wave will be about 12:35 right inches you may get more range however even speaking to someone with the same model they're not bad little radios definitely okay the Chinese make model you were showing definitely has more power however you would be surprised that even with 500 milliwatts that signal from that mountain to UBC traveled and made it true 30 MI of course these were specific and unique conditions thank you and 73

yea those Garman radios suck bad man, They are the biggest scam going as radios go. I myself would buy a trunk load of the BOfangs and still have money left over and run them at max power on an FRS ch and not look back.

I'm probably not the first to say this, but during a natural disaster, or God forbid in some type of surprise attack that can happen anywhere on this planet these days, do you think anyone with a Baofeng will care if they have a license or not?
I have a question, if there is a natural disaster, if the Cel Towers are down.... if the t*sh is hitting the fan.....will the FCC really be worried about who has a license? The reason I ask is that if I am planning for doomsday, I'd want the radio that gives me the best chance to reach someone or communicate with Family even nearby.... would I get a ticket or worse yet, thrown in jail, if I escape the zombies and nuclear (pronounced Nook-you-ler) Fallout, and still come out on top unscathed...will Uncle Sam really be waiting for me to bring me in for failing to have a license? All that being said, are there any of the unlicensed radios that I can use that go at least a mile or two even in the city?
GMRS is your best bet the license is cheap now and no test good for 10 years and the immediate family. The radios themselves will cost you more. As to what radios I suggest "notarubicon"s videos for tons of info but the newer wide band Midland micromobiles are the best easy to use reliable coms imho. Handheld probably a wuxon something.
Really though I know you don't want to hear it but reliable coms take research,knowledge,and feild testing your gear before the emergency.
The license becomes kind of you ID in an emergency. Ham's for decades have provided emergency communication, like on 9/11.😊

Look up P25 motorola radio. Almost all emergency services have gone digital and encrypted radios which means no. .New York had these fancy radios before 911 and they had trouble with them. The fire fighters had gone back to an older radio system and when 911 happened. Police couldn't talk to the older firefighters radios which depended on a repeater system that was on the world trade center and got knocked out. New York's dooms day communication bunker was next to the world trade complex and became worthless too.
