@@richiethesee It has nearly nothing to do with the "lip". And most professional trumpet players have at least another half octave of range. And they play musically. I've read comments that the trumpet player is actually really good and chose to play this way on this recording. I hope so.
The synth solo in the bridge should really have been handed over to the keys. The trumpet playing is skillful, but its loud strident tone fails to convey the light-hearted sense of magic in the original track. I often find Mike Olson's trumpet and distorted guitar tones harsh and overbearing in the mix. He's a talented musician, but I prefer a sideman to blend in rather than stand out.

He plays staccato where there should be mykw tones, he turns the tones when he gets tired in the lip. And he should learn to play before posting a video.
@@runerebnordantonsen3202 There is a certain "garage band" thing that is going on in this particular recording. @@sabinegiannamore8711 All I'm gonna say is this: it takes a HELL of a trumpet player to sound that messy. It isn't supposed to be tight and precise, it's supposed to be sleazy and a little off-kilter. He nails it IMHO. If there's anything that needs work, it's the low notes in those backup vocals xD
It's raw and has good energy. It's not very thought out or polished and came off a little rough. I mostly love it but wish they would have practiced a bit more, give the bass player an electric and go with 3 piece brass.
Yea, I think the arrangement is quite interesting in terms of potential, but their instrument playing skills seem pretty low, it's like...technically they're playing this on a level I'd expect from an amateur highschool band that practices once a week in a garage.
This is one of those songs that you think could never be covered. My so, so wrong. Amazing job! I love this jazzy, ska interpretation! Absolutely love!
It's great how they respect the original song, but also interpret it freely and enjoyably! It sounds like POLICE in the middle, and the ending is also very casual, which is great!
Back in the day (1973) those pants were perfect for the in style high school teenager. And the top is also perfect (although mine was made of angora knit) Moms would never have such wide bottoms or the little gap between top and pants.
The ragged trumpet is what makes this really great. That guy is really good, an obvious pro. His cracks, creeks, slides are intentional. People didn't understand Monet's painting either: "It doesn't look clean, or perfect!" Exactly. That's what the trumpet is doing here. I really like the whole groove from the rest of the band too but the trumpet is the icing.
To me, this band not only killed it on this cover, they reinvented the whole song while honoring every lyric. Maybe the original video (one of the most memorable and watchable videos of the roaring '80's imho) was so "high concept" that the true meaning of this love song was lost on me: but LSD has made this one of the most poignant love songs I have ever heard in my 58 years on this planet. Her expressions/singing are captivating and her announcing "I'll be coming for your love o k" just knocks me over. Then to create the exact opposite type of video from the hi tech original, this being basically a garage band setting, and craft these beautiful harmonies and unusual instruments into an epic cover and then smash it out of the ballpark is remarkable. A raucous trumpet solo to an A-Ha song ? I hope I can catch them live, I see they are coming nearby this summer. And yeah, the singer is a babe.......
@@plansahead4233 this guy saying he tries not to be a hater is kind of like that girl that you pick up at the bar after 3 drinks saying well I don't normally do this then comes home with you........lol
Interpretation type of horror. I have played the trumpet for 25 years, and had students in training for 15 years. If the trumpeter here has paid an instructor to learn an instrument, I would recommend that he demand the money back. He "turns" tones. Blows at full strength probably to cover incompetence. He tries some skills where he misses most of the notes. No self-respecting musician will humble himself as it does here. 😁
These are fun people. Love how this guy plays his trumpet, I’m a little jealous. Bass is great, lead singer, so jazzy, drummer tight as paint, keyboard pays and laughs. Love it.
3:34 I love the trumpet. For some reason I imagine a strange blend of the 50's and 80's. A bunch of greasers hanging out at an old school arcade/amusement park. The rides are all the 50's alien vibe, Roswell. It's neon and ultraviolet under the night sky.
There are a lot of people in this comment section who don't know who Lake Street Dive are. The trumpet player often plays in this style in some of their cover songs (see: This Magic Moment). The band doesn't take themselves seriously and often do silly cover songs (see: Bohemian Rhapsody or Love Shack, just to name two). Also he primarily plays guitar and not trumpet, but he can play the trumpet well (see: Mistakes).
For real. This was probably thrown together in a few hours with next to no rehearsal time and people are bitching about the trumpet player. They are legit one of the best live performances I've ever seen (twice) and ya'll are gonna judge them on some dinky A.V. Club shoot that no one cares about.
I think McDuck's first instrument is the trumpet. Pretty sure I remember an interview where Rachel Price says when he first started playing the guitar (because the band needed some guitar) he sucked and now he doesn't suck at all, or words to that effect. He does impressive turns on both.
She does play guitar on a few things (e.g. Be Cool) but the parts are generally very simple. Which is fine - she brings that voice! But her guitar playing has never been a major instrumental focal point.
Gorgeous main voice, the band chilling and enjoying, offering a flawless performance...blondie, your voice FLOODS the entire place. Jee. Guys you're going to need getting out that chorus stronger if you want to keep the pace!! She ain't waiting for noone. Trumpet guy, keyboard guy, drum guy, cello girl, congrats. Cover like this so unique make great bands. Keep it up! I look forward to hear a similar cover, Lake Street Dive. Make it soon.
Love this. So much fun to watch. Love the chourus harmonies. That horn player has excessive amounts of talent. And the lead singer sings great and exudes confidence and sexiness. Quality bass and drums. Thanks for this.
The drummers singing just gave the song that so called "humpf" Also i really dont get all the comments about the trumpeteer, he's playing perfectly in the style of the song, plus playing quietly at the end is very difficult on those high notes, cheers to him
This was a great version. The girls voice and the rest of the band was great but the guy on the trumpet was really the hardest job to do to keep the real style of the original song /beats going and all that. He was phanominal and really funny at the end when she laughed because he couldn't do the last note he tried. Very funny. Yous guys r a class act and Thanks for coming to Boston. Legend band yous are.
Darkfaith 66 - No, Not missing the point - It's out of tune..and quite badly - my ears don't really cope well with that. I'm not a snob and love to hear live - but part of being a musician is to be in tune. People can't hear it here? If this was being played on fretless instruments like violins, cellos etc - it would be really pretty bad. If you look at a lot of the comments- it seems to be about how pretty the girls are.
The song was a huge hit partly because of the pencil-sketch video. Back in the day, we would stop to watch great videos, even whilst dancing in a club. Video was new, and this one was memorizing. The lyrics are actually quite genius, and this performance is exceptional. Trumpet, bass, percussion, keyboard and vocals are spot on.

Couldn´t hit the high notes like Hagen either ;)
you're 50% right......now be honest
Yea, I think the arrangement is quite interesting in terms of potential, but their instrument playing skills seem pretty low, it's like...technically they're playing this on a level I'd expect from an amateur highschool band that practices once a week in a garage.
They are back! How I miss this video!
Same here. I saved it on my pc this time :)
This is one of those songs that you think could never be covered. My so, so wrong. Amazing job! I love this jazzy, ska interpretation! Absolutely love!
The Reel Big Fish cover is worth a look as well.
So much about this version is awesome. Bridget Kearney rules.
So much freaking talent in one room.
This tells me how brilliant the singer of A-HA did singing the original song.
exactly!!!!
It's great how they respect the original song, but also interpret it freely and enjoyably! It sounds like POLICE in the middle, and the ending is also very casual, which is great!
Trumpet guy's like, "There's a keyboard RIGHT HERE BEHIND ME?!?!?"
That actually made me laugh out loud! I think he was highly featured so that they could say it was a swing version.. Shh...Don't tell anyone.
I have a crush on Rachael.
Me too!!
me too
I have a crush on Bridget
Marcos Pintor Whos that?
Steve Why the bass player. I like her little head bobbing n stuff. It’s cute as hell. It melts me.
The little salsa grind at 3:41 is simply magical.
Uauuu!!! What a powerfull voice!!! A great version!! I like it SO MUCH!!!! You reivented the song...
This singer is extremely beautiful and attractive. She has something charming.
It is because of the lights :)
She is light that makes them burn so bright!
Mom pants on point lol Anyway, loving the cover.
Back in the day (1973) those pants were perfect for the in style high school teenager. And the top is also perfect (although mine was made of angora knit) Moms would never have such wide bottoms or the little gap between top and pants.
That zipper gotta be a foot long
Hanger to get em on
Don't know if the pants are a net positive or negative, but she's pulling it off, and is pretty hot in a real natural way.
High waist, tight, flared legs. I stared at too many of those back in the day. Definitely not mom jeans. Those would be those ugly Capri pants.
I love it how everyone has a microphone and sing along
Music is soo over produced, love this, love raw. x
Super goofy but awesome and sincere rendition of the song.
Love the band. They are obviously super talented.
Yep, the band is Lake Street Dive, and they are fantastic.
The trumpet was tight, along with the rest of the band! Sure there were slurs, but they seemed intentional. Aaaaand the harmonies were bananas
Yet he can't play straight. You're talking nonsense. Are you a musician?
Nah that ruined it
Fun and ambitious cover. How 16,000 people don't like this is just beyond me.
Beautifully expressed - no smoke and mirrors here, just the straight goods, hangin out.
That is indeed what SHE said....
And yeah, the singer is a babe.......
bro are you kidding me? i try not to be a hater.. but this cover is university prep garbage..
'Try' a little harder "bro" !
They're not in tune and the trumpet player misses many notes (maybe they should've selected a lower key).
@@plansahead4233 this guy saying he tries not to be a hater is kind of like that girl that you pick up at the bar after 3 drinks saying well I don't normally do this then comes home with you........lol
I thought the trumpeter was going to have a stroke.
He didn’t,... but I did
He's a damn good player actually. Maybe a bit "DCI"
You obviously have never played trumpet. This is a very difficult piece at that range. He did awesome.
I cant quit laughing...i love this...!!! Waaaaahahahahahahaha
Or at least bust a poofoo valve
OMG,one of the best covers period.
That trumpet and this interpretation - 10 points
Interpretation type of horror. I have played the trumpet for 25 years, and had students in training for 15 years. If the trumpeter here has paid an instructor to learn an instrument, I would recommend that he demand the money back. He "turns" tones. Blows at full strength probably to cover incompetence. He tries some skills where he misses most of the notes. No self-respecting musician will humble himself as it does here. 😁
that trumpet sucks - too much "sloppiness"
trumpeting that part must NOT have been easy lol
The squints were intense
If he'd kept it simpler, might have been a few less bum notes
OvAeons hahahaha
He was turning red as a tomato at one point.
dave hendo sometimes mistakes is part of art process and it makes it magical, just like this cover :)'
If Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel had a daughter
Jesus, the image that just played in my head lol.
Holy shit that's precisely what I was thinking.
That’s precisely what I was thinking.
with a dash of kate beckinsale....
cheers!
Holy shit that's precisely what I was thinking.
These are fun people. Love how this guy plays his trumpet, I’m a little jealous. Bass is great, lead singer, so jazzy, drummer tight as paint, keyboard pays and laughs. Love it.
As a certified 80's teenager, I approve of this cover.
3:34 I love the trumpet. For some reason I imagine a strange blend of the 50's and 80's. A bunch of greasers hanging out at an old school arcade/amusement park. The rides are all the 50's alien vibe, Roswell. It's neon and ultraviolet under the night sky.
I just smoked Blueberry Kush too! ;)
Yeah I do recall hearing somewhere that he only became a guitarist because they needed someone.
There are old videos of them with Rachel on guitar. The trumpet playing is different but there's something to it.
Brilliant as always from LSD. Love this band!
I thought it was a great performance and you had fun too!! Loved it!!
Crazy!!! Yet unbelievably fun and uplifting. Great and sunny cover! Thank you!
I really like Lake Street Dive. This was a very difficult tune to cover, vocally. Nice job.
I graduated in 82 and this chick looks and is definitely dressed like all the girls I ever knew back then.
Gag me with a spoon.
My last comment is an incredible understatement. Never had a band where you could not choose who you admire most.
I can help you with that. Watch more of there stuff and you soon realize they are all great but that bassist freakin slays it. She's the star
Yup the bassist 😂@@wingracer1614
Good god, her voice and singing style! She’s a super star who needs huge Brazilian dollar contract.
this song is so good you cant spoil it even if you try as hard as they did
I don't know, they almost succeeded.
Haha true 😂
Oh I don't know, they did a pretty good of wrecking it..
The drummers singing just gave the song that so called "humpf"
Also i really dont get all the comments about the trumpeteer, he's playing perfectly in the style of the song, plus playing quietly at the end is very difficult on those high notes, cheers to him
It's the harsh blaring tone of the trumpet that's problematic. It fails to convey the lighthearted magic of the original track.
I enjoyed this version of the song almost as much as the original.....great job
RAW and this is how I like it, ya sure they could add in all the effects and editing, no need to, it's perfect, love it, great job guys. x Dublin IRE
I wish I was sitting in that club with a basket of fries and a root beer. I could here the whole set!
Haha I like how you're very specific about your food selection in a live band environment.
Put me down for one of each as well.
@@scorpionwins6378 haha! right after the global pandemic!
Agree about the trumpet 🎺
I feel happy watching the trumpet man's suffering. Thanks for making the world a happy place.
People throw rocks at things that shine! You guys shine like the sun!
Ugh 🤦🏻♂️
Cap'N Jazz will always have the best cover of this
YES!
Sean Crawford classic
agreed
if you can strip a band down to basics and they sound this good you KNOW they got it!
yes....some missing the point of this...
Anyone that can manage "sexy" in '70s mom jeans has got my vote.
One of a very few singers who can keep her eyes open. Awesome 👏
I feel like youtube has failed me. How am I just now seeing this? 💜
03:18 I love that she is having so much fun that she just busts out laughing......THIS is what music is all about!
So right!
Wow, the percussion intro really made me believe I was going to hear some northeastern Brazilian music here. Nice groove!
Yeah the trumpet made is sound really southamerica- Mexico 🇲🇽 style
Sim
@@pedrohenriquepinheiro9131 ?
The song was a huge hit partly because of the pencil-sketch video.
Back in the day, we would stop to watch great videos, even whilst dancing in a club. Video was new, and this one was memorizing.
The lyrics are actually quite genius, and this performance is exceptional. Trumpet, bass, percussion, keyboard and vocals are spot on.
Nice rendition, love the 80's keep them coming!
That horn tho..
Man, that dude tears it up!
The singer is amazing!
I am having total flashbacks - the clothing, the paneling, the song....this is great.😂🥰
