Nominee Elisabeth Welch made her Broadway musical debut in 1922. She sang Cole Porter's controversial Love for Sale in The New Yorkers in 1931 & then absented herself from Broadway musicals until 1986 when (at the age of 82) she returned in the revue Jerome Kern Goes to Hollywood. In between she graced London's musical theatre. It is lovely that she was nominated for the Tony.
I went to the opening night of Sweet Charity and forgot her performance by the time the curtain came down. Betty Buckley should have been in this category and won.
Award shows aren't complete without some bitter person (usually one of us gays championing another diva) holding on to resentment for decades that their fave doesn't win.
