Check this clip I just did if you think the paper one will not work with gravity feed! I know what "THE BOOK" says, but we need to try things on our own sometimes. No fuel pump and the tank I use only has about 1 cup of fuel in it. CLICK HERE ➜ ua-cam.com/video/2lV6nWYNRDU/v-deo.html

I may start to use this clear paper element filter on some gravity feed riders. It will definitely keep more trash out of carb.
Like I said Ive never tried this in fear of it may work now at the moment, but what about a week from now for some reason it just stops flowing fuel. Ive seen the 394358 fuel filter do this. Sometimes it will gravity feed, Sometimes it wont.

On the instructions that I got with my lawn tractor, I was advised that the (crappy) fuel filter was meant on machines that had no fuel pump, and the (good) filter was to be used with fuel pumps. I put the good one on anyway (I have no fuel pump) and have never had a problem with it.

@@evsnova74 What I have on all my gravity fed machines are the WHITE flat filters. They are 75 micron. I've never seen anything with the red 150 micron filter on it. While you can sometimes get away with one of the bullet-style paper filters on a gravity fed system, they are really designed for engines with a fuel pump. Use the white 75 micron flat filters on gravity fed systems and you'll not have any problems.

Wonder why some gravity-fed's have only a permanent mesh screen in the tank, like many in Honda's GCV line & Briggs Professional Series OHV (mine is 2011). Moreover, these are not manufactured with an in-line filter at all. I'm not sure if Briggs Quantum L-heads have a tank screen but the Quantum engine on several Toro's I have seen do not have an in-line filter. Yet the Briggs Intek on my gravity fed MTD tractor does seem to rely on an in-line filter but no sort of mesh in the tank (the type of tank that is strapped behind the engine with a big zip tie) that I can see. Hmmm.

Plus, they are clear so that you can check for fuel flow!
    Thanks Steve!

I don't know why were that bothered. I've got stationary engines that are 115 years old an never had a filter, my lister is 75 years old, has a carb with a jet, a float bowl and butterfly. Same as your modern engine. No filter and it's never blocked. I put a paper one on my Hyundai generator and it failed to run. Gravity feed isn't enough, had to put a mesh one back on. Nearly didn't bother, but my pipe was already cut!

    • @MrTheHillfolk

If those better paper filters get any moisture on them , it just kills the flow.
Sometimes it's hard to see , and being cheap enough just swap it out.
Try and drain it and see if anything nasty comes out.

    • @gordthor5351
      @gordthor5351 3 роки тому +1

@@michaelbamber4887 115 year old carbs are not "the same as your modern engine". Modern carbs have tiny passages that don't take much debris to plug them solid. Ancient carbs have gapping offices. If you have cleaned modern carbs, you would know what I am getting at. Unless you enjoy cleaning carbs regularly and having poorly running engines, you do need fuel filters.

Some people don’t pay attention to fuel filters glad you’re sharing it and wow what a difference. So many folks don’t understand that petroleum products come a long ways before they get to the gas pump when we get our fuel. Or even a can it is just magically get there it’s got a lot of containers to transport from and there’s not many filters between the final product and our small engines.

True to say that not all of us take as good a care of our fuel systems as we should, also have added a filter to a Cub Cadet tiller with no issues, both of the engines are Kohlers.

Many Honda Trail 90s had a similar screen filter in the carburetor and no other in the tank or the lines. Guess what, after rebuilding the carburetor you can leave that one in the carburetor and put two of these better filters in line. One on the run position fuel line and another on the reserve position fuel line, maybe never having problems with that carburetor again.
    Staggering them works best.
    Good stuff.

I have both on my machine. I use the crappy one as a prefilter straight off the tank. It then goes to a better paper filter. The fuel pump on my machine then revives the fuel that gets sent into another filter before the carburator. Redundant you may say but works for me.

Hi Steve. The space between gas valve and carburetor on my Duromax xp4400e is crazy small. No way can I fit a decent fuel filter in between. Was thinking about the junk filter you reviewed before watching. Any suggestions on tiny but effective fuel filter? Thanks. I’m a big fan.

It's just a screen I get it. I need one to get the big stuff like grass and leaves from getting into the carb. It works for me.

The red filter is for units with no fuel pump! If you use a filter on some units with out a pump they will not get enough fuel and run to lean! I've been a small engine tech for over 20 years and learned this the hard way! Great video tho Steve gets everyone talking and sharing!!!! God bless everyone and have a great week!!!!

I seem to have problems with the paper filters on my craftsman riding mower, they always run dry. Switched to the white 75 microns and got a better result but still eventually ran dry. I think the main issue is craftsman puts the bottom on the gas tank at the same level as the carburetor and do not have fuel pumps. Which just makes it run dry unless you have nearly zero flow restrictions. Im still have trouble with my mower because of poor fuel rate and filter filling with air even after installing new fuel lines and clamps.

Hey Steve! On those newer Briggs lawnmowers, the tank outlet is nearly directly coupled with those crappy new plastic carburetors. There is _very_ little space between them and I think no chance you'll get a filter installed in there. The problem is compounded by the fact those plastic jets get clogged by even the tiniest particles. Is there like a tank neck filter I could install on it like on some generators?

My lawnmower and snowblower don't have a filter that I can see. Should I splice one into the fuel line?

I feel the same way about those red filters. I order ones like you show there that have the metal cone instead of the paper but same kind of filtration. I also prefer the clear filter to be able to see if there is fuel in the line. A great troubleshooting tool. Engine dies and you look at the filter and it's empty you know it's out of gas. 😉

I find the good paper style filters don’t work well with gravity fed carbs. Especially ones with very little drop from the tank to the carb (like a pushmower). They just have too much restriction and seem to starve the system at times. It seems to take too long for the fuel to flow thru the paper.
The screen style has very little resistance and is better than nothing in most cases. The paper style which much prefer work super well on systems with a fuel pump. Excellent video as always.

The paper element is meant 4 systems w/ a fuel pump. Not good 4 gravity, he neglected 2 mention that

how about gravity feed which has a 5 gallon tank or more spaced 2 feet above the carb? I cant restrict the gas ENOUGH

Do you think that changing from the crap filter to a good paper filter will work okay for 2 strike? My old toro ccr2000 snowthrower has the crap fuel filter but being 2 stroke I'm not sure how that may if at all affect the oil mixture with the gas when it runs through the filter media.

Sometimes you just dont have enough space to put in anything else, at least you have something to stop bigger bits of whatever might fall in your tank.

I know how you feel. I have a couple of them 2200 w suitcase generators They didn’t have filters I crammed in a paper fuel filter and realized something was up on my first tank of gas. at about a 1/4 tank of fuel under 30% load The generator would start spitting in sputtering and shut off. I switched to a Cleanable Shorty glass fine mesh fuel filter and problem solved. I agree the paper filter filters better but sometimes you gotta use what works And something is better than nothing.

They also sell the paper versions as well. It's a bit confusing sometimes as they highlight both the red or white mesh mushroom filters and the paper versions on their parts diagrams. If I was them I would only opt the paper one.

For the price of a decent fuel filter it really is a no brainer.
Any problems with the carb on a working saw is more than likely down to foreign objects getting throw the filter.
Keep the tips coming as they save us amateurs and semi professionals a trip to the service/repair guys.

I had one of these filters I just pulled off my Honda mower after about 6-7 years. I popped it apart with some Channelocks. I know my fuel tank had a bunch of crud in it, so I figured the filter would be loaded. Ha! Turns out, the metal mesh was completely clean! I just ordered the recommended filters.

We use those same clear filters in my shop. We usually do what you suggested - replacing the red filters with the clear. I can say, though, that that does not ALWAYS work. We have done that in the past on tune-ups and the engine would run like shit. Tried cleaning the carburetor and everything else. Nothing worked. Finally, we took the clear filter off and put the red one it called for back on. Engine ran perfectly. Apparently, in some cases, the clear filters do noty let enough fuel flow. They need the less restriction of the red ones. So... tldr; In most cases, yes.. you are correct. In some fringe outliers, though... you may HAVE to stick with the red filters.
Love your videos... Always learn something... or if not, at least I'm entertained :)

Would it be beneficial to use both? I could see leaving the red screen to catch large grass particles etc. and cut the hose to install a fiber paper one. The screen pre-filter should help the paper filter to last longer.
