Small Engine Fuel Filters

    Today we'll be discussing some various fuel filters that I have in my inventory. I'll go over how they work, the differences between them, and why you should use a paper filter on your equipment!
    Fuel filters (like air filters) are essential for keeping debris out of your engines carburetor.
    How well they filter this debris is determined by the Micron rating.
    A Micron is a metric form of measurement, and is equal to 1 millionth of a meter. So the lower the Micron level, the smaller the debris the fuel filter will filter out.
    All of these fuel filters were purchased from STENS Canada.

    God Bless you brother for this video. My 4 wheeler has been down for a couple of weeks now. I watched your video this morning and went straight out and fixed it. I had put a new carb on it and thought to be safe ( I had rust in my tank previously) I'd install an in line fuel filter. Not knowing any better I put a paper filter on it. I would prime it and it would run for a few seconds and then shut down. I was at my wits end. After watching your video I went out and took the filter off of it and it purrs like a kitten. I am a happy camper now. Thanks you.

      Maybe try to find a filter that flows a bit better, I know the ATV ones are a little higher end and flow better than these lawnmower ones, due to the need for more fuel at full throttle. Glad you got fixed up!

    A very well presented, laid out, an in-depth video. Great job! This will be helpful to sooo many people.
    The only thing I would like to add, is that many people/commercial users (including myself) run with two fuel filters. Using a cheaper ($6-ish) high micron (25-30) fuel filter first, and then run into a final, low micron (10) fuel filter second.
    We do this on all of our 27 HP Kohler V-Twins with Fuel pumps. We change the cheaper, clear, 25-30 micron fuel filter about twice a year (Machines used year around, for mowing, and snow removal), and the metal housing 10 micron filter every two years.
    And one more thing I would like to add. Is to warn people away from using a 'mesh strainer' fuel tank insert. The aftermarket industry has these available to insert a shut-off valve with mesh strainer into the rubber grommet of fuel tanks. Once installed, the strainer cannot be seen. Which will likely later develop restriction issues, and can be hard to diagnose, because it cannot be seen.

    These things are on motor scooters, too -- those can certainly be considered small engines. I'd assume the functioning of filters in scooters wouldn't be as critically important though, as they interact with dust and dirt a whole lot less than outdoor equipment.

    Thanks for posting such informative videos. My old Craftsman lawn tractor came with a paper fuel filter, similar to the 30 micron shown in the video, when I bought it used. Thanks for pointing out that can cause fuel starvation issues on gravity fed equipment. I had not considered that. I'll replace that first, with the 75 micron filter in your video, to see if that resolves an idle surging issue. If not, I'll drill out the low idle jet, as shown in your other video.

    I have a 1989 Toro 724 (38072) snowblower with a Tecumseh HSK70 engine. It has no fuel filter and I can't find anything in the manual or IPL about fuel filters. Can I use a fuel filter with this engine? I'd prefer to use the smaller clear paper filter pictured (Stens 120-560) although at that price I'd rather buy another manufacturer/supplier and more of them from somewhere else and get a better deal. I'd install it just downstream of the shutoff valve under the fuel tank and above the starter motor. Will this work simply by gravity feed or does this engine require a fuel pump for this to work? I'd like to see a video addressing the differences in various machines for filters with and without fuel pumps.

      My question as well. What’s the micron rating and what’s the difference between the two types I see, the ones with bare filter material on the outside and those with a plastic cage around the filter. Also related, why do they tend to fall off the hose inside the tank?

    • @danoakley6538
      @danoakley6538 2 роки тому +2

      Because the fuel line for those are garbage. They become brittle and hard, causing the filter to fall off. Idk if they make better fuel line, stihl's fuel line seems to be better but you can't buy a roll of it, that I know of.

    • @Rein_Ciarfella

      Dan Oakley My research so far indicates Tygon fuel lines (always marked on the lines, as opposed to the crappy knockoffs who say they’re Tygon in the advertising but really aren’t) are the best available so that’s what I’ll be using for now. I just wish they made them in clear so it would be easier to see fuel running through them.

    • @waynestefinashen239

      I have not been able to specifically find any micron ratings for the small two stroke filters but many are a compressed felt material and some are porous plastic and information on line says the felt filters run from 1 to 100 microns and the porous plastic 1 to 200 microns. If we find any specific information we will be glad to respond further.

  • @JimsNBHomestead
    @JimsNBHomestead 2 роки тому +1

    how does size of the filter have anything to do with particulate size? Flow rate can be effected by media surface size, more media surface equals an increase of flow. So bigger is better. The large body has a secondary benefit of allowing particulate and water to drop out. Efficiency is also important to understand, not everything is as it seems due to quality issues. Also cellulose filter elements can easily be rendered useless when water is present. Dirt and water are the 2 biggest issues with small equipment. The discussion point of water was completely missed.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  2 роки тому +2

      Great points, usually the larger the element, the finer the particulates it will filter. This is because the paper elements are bigger than say a metal screen. As shown, the filters get larger in size while the particles they filter get smaller in microns. Bigger is usually better, but the filter element has a direct connection to flow rates, as most of these engines have a fuel system that is gravity fed. It's not like a car, where you have a strong electric fuel pump, and can run a large element filter with the smallest micron rating. Gravity fed engines will become starved for fuel when running these larger paper elements. The engine will surge, and sometimes eventually just become vapour locked and won't have any fuel in the bowl to run.
