I went through Army Reserves training at Kapooka with a guy who was 55 years old- one of the nicest blokes I ever met, no prior military experience. Seeing him strive to make it through inspired me (I was 25 at the time) to keep going and make it through to March-Out.
Hi, I did Kapooka at 45 years of age, in 2005. First of the 4 week course. Six weeks crammed into 4. It took me a few tries to do the fitness test, but I made it to Kapooka. It was hard but doable. Don't expect any different treatments to the younger recruits. I was about mid field in most finish times. I stayed in for 9 years and 5 year in active. RAEME Craftsman Australian Army Reserves.
I was the one who failed the beep test. I am a weak runner so it takes alot out of me I went back in August and smashed it marched out in September. Don't ever give up.
Im 48 years old, an RN graduate and i just wanna challenge myself and prove to the world that age in this era is no longer an issue and obstacle to be in the army. With the dispute going on in the Middle East, Europe, and some part of the world, it's good to prepare as we could be entering to another world war (history repeats itself) All these are attainable thru preparation, mindset and training. It will be an honor for me to be part of the Australian Defence Force Reservist, infantry soldier, arm and vehicle specialists.
Hi Guys, Great Insite to going through basic training and leadup preparation. It takes me back to when I joined in 1984. I’m not sure how long basic is now but for us it was 82 days of culture shock from the moment you are screamed at to get off the bus and stand on a white dot and from there they just broke you all down as a group and then built you up a lean mean fighting machine TEAM. It sounds like basic training is still the same and I know there are diehard’s that will say it was a lot tougher when they went through but its only as tough as the society you lived in at that time. It is still physically and mentally challenging, and as a group your all still punished for some unwritten law you didn’t know about etc. The first time you hear the band strike up and you start to march to the tune is an amazing feeling, you stand that little bit taller and realise you are part of something bigger. I recommend if you have the slightest inclination to join, then just do it or it will eat you up for years. I went on to enjoy 32 years of service full of many highs and a few very lows, but your mates are there to ride it out with you. I am still in touch with some of my fellow Kapooka recruits (mates for life).
The reserve course is easy now as it is just 3 weeks anyone can pass,5 days first aid,5 days on weapons but only the styer, and no.drill at all as it taught in your unit.
hey brodie! is there any chance you could interview someone who went through the 5 week reserves officer course at kapooka? it's a small group of people so it's been difficult to find out what it's like. it's still 5 weeks, rather than the 3 for non-officers, and everyone you are there with also are officer trainees.
I have mate. If it hasn't changed from the 5 week course than I've already done interview a while back. Head into my playlist "career chats" and you will see an Army Reserves GSO interview with Sheridan
Hey mate I’ve been vaccinated for Covid but does adf make it mandatory to receive Covid shots in bootcamp and while serving in general? I got real sick from my first vax and took months of recovery
I'm not sure about the covid shot mate. I know it was but unsure if it still is. Assuming it might be because you are a bloody pin cushion at the start
I am 55 nearly there just got to sort out some medical issues and going through officer is it true its 5 weeks for officers rather than 3 weeks? This was really insightful so thanks
Hi just a question or few, what's cut-off age to apply for recruitment, how many attempts can one apply, and main of all The high School cariculim has changed dramatically since I first applied when I was 17 I only got halfway through yr9, anyways lol I keep failing the AptitudeTest 😡 why we even need it I just don't know lol how can we do something about lowering or dismissal of AptitudeTest we wouldn't be in l9wer states of recruiting 💯
I'm pretty sure the cut off has been bumped up to 65. Depends on what you fail on in regards to reapplying but most things it's 3 and done. Is that a question or statement? I replied to that one in your previous comment
Hey mate, a bit of a question from me: I've filled the application for the Army, full time, hopefully for a SFO, but I'd love to know about thr life in the Army when you are 43 and basically planning to stay there till whatever as of opposite to join in 20ish and leave around 40+. What sort of life one should expect? Heaps thanks for what you are doing mate. Cheers
The career choices are unlimited really so even if you get sick of a certain job you can transfer to another or if you are a digger you can eventually transfer to commissioned officer. You can specialise in your trade as a warrant officer or you can go regimental. I know plenty of people that joined when I did and well before me and they plan on staying in for life.
@@outperformfitness standards are too low generally. The state of the military is the weakest it’s been maybe since the inter war period. Fitness standards have steadily declined over the last 20 years. Who’s defining ‘suitable for the job’? During the GWOT we had the luxury of hiding many personnel in fairly comfortable conditions while a very small group of people did the fighting. You don’t need a doctorate in strategic studies to see there’s some very concerning flash points around the world. If we as a nation are honest with ourselves, I propose a small fraction of the ADF could go and not only survive, but dominate in a near peer conflict like Eastern Europe right now, or potentially in the South China Sea.
@@outperformfitness if you can’t extrapolate the answer from the above, I can’t make it any clearer. And to be more accurate, I didn’t say 45 was too old, I said the standards were too low.
@johnmcdonald-6196 what was "it should be" referring to? I just had a candidate do a 10.11 on the beep test at age 58 which is better than most would do even through my time from 2005-2022. So with this, age and the fitness standards are not related.
great video, but realistically not many can fly fighter jets in Aus. Its a numbers game we dont have many in comparison to pilots we have. Gender should NEVER have been brought up,.
Yeah for sure only the selected few would be fly fighter jets that go through all the testing. I don't think we spoke about pilots? What do you mean gender should never have been brought up?
Aptitude is important. Marching is what should be removed. Look at the SAS, aptitude is important. Marching is barely practised. Not even saluting is practised in the SAS

we probably know each other. I joined in 2005 in the reserves RAEME mechanic through the ARTAP
Nearly a year has passed since I applied, waiting for Meds test and defence interview hope comes soon

there's still some drill. They have to learn to march around the place. Just don't think there's formal drill on the parade ground
Is the aptitude test still at the YOU session? I'm still in the application process and got emailed an aptitude test to complete online.
you will do one at home then a confirmation retest in person

As far as I am aware Kapooka is still only 3 weeks for Army Reserve GSO but there are other modules you have to complete outside of kapooka.

she went into cav, armoured veh crew
If you can do it, do it. Age is number, and not everyone is on the same level. I know a 75 year old that out performs guys in their 20's.
That's it!
How about 52??
Currently have a client going through enlistment at 58 and smashed his PFA already.

Fact is kapooka is an attendance course with no real gates. It’s a shadow of its former self churning out terrible soldiers.
