Glad to see you mentioning wetting the beard before applying butter. I just recently started doing that and I love the results. It also makes sense, especially if you are using a butter with an ingredient like cupuacu that can absorb 200x its own weight in water. Wet your beard and give it something to soak up as it absorbs into your beard and you'll have the softest beard in the morning.

Great video as always, Dan! My dollop is a thumbnail worth of butter. Washing hands is key for sure. Combing and brushing afterward is also important. Need to reference these vids a bit. My routine is usually
Morning: oil at home a few minutes before leaving, balm at work (15-20 minutes later)
Night: shower, rinsing thoroughly before applying conditioner, or now a co-wash, mostly dry off, butter before bed
Haven't noticed any grotesquely overuse of any oil or butter leaving stains on my pillowcases or my beard being overly greasy (although it does feel like that sometimes with balm + sweat).

I usually have an early evening shower and comb through when damp. I then eat an evening meal. After between 8-9pm I'll get it damp again before applying butter. That gives it a couple of hours to absorb before bed 11-12pm. I dont apply oil first unless I'm using one that stays more like a cream than an oil after melting.

That's about how much butter I use on a 6-month length beard. This makes me think I should be using less, but my beard is also mostly gray, so I believe it takes more oil/butter on that type of beard considering that type of hair tends to be dryer and less protected from the elements.

The variation I started doing for my nighttime butter routine, because I started because using mustache wax, is using warm water in my spray bottle to help remove the remaining wax in my stache. I figured, what the heck, lets see what happens when I use warm water on the rest of my beard before butter. I assumed that it wouldn't be a bad thing to open the cuticles up before applying butter. Since starting this, I use less butter and my beard will accept thinner oils in the morning without drying out during the day. Is this the right thing to do, I dunno. A day in the life of a gray beard.

If I’m doing the full morning routine every morning that ends with beard balm, would you recommend rinsing out the beard a little more to remove any leftover balm before adding the butter in the evening? I thought the balm would block the hairs from absorbing the butter. (I made a UA-cam account just to subscribe and ask this haha. Been growing my beard without caring for it properly long enough.)

I was incorrectly under the impression that wax in beard butter was a bad sign. Apparently, it's in most of the popular, and highly rated brands. If it wasn't for your channel I'd be in the dark about these things, and continue to make incorrect assumptions. 😂Hope you had a fantastic New Years Dan C!👊😎

🤔for the pillow problem I found that a beard hamic (that’s what it’s called on amazon lol) works great for me . However they only make them for very short beards so my good old mother custom made me a very long and deep one.🤷🏻‍♂️it looks very weird but my beard just some what flouts in there with no pressure on the beard and protect it from the fan air blowing on it and no stuff on my beard.
