Only just watched this episode and was going to say this myself in comments. Casting would have been the traditional way for bronze unlike connan films making cast iron swords lol. Happy days all
Absolutely! That's the classical way of doing bronze swords, as I understand it. Maybe Alec should get in touch with Skallagrim? Skal has a great appreciation for bronze weapons :)
Really cool Alec to see you forge out that piece of Aluminum bronze. It looks really fun to work. I think it will actually be pretty strong after its heat treated. Jason
What I truly enjoy about Alec and Will is their age and attitude on life. No obstacles and no fear of trying new things. Keep forging ahead by friends!
The xiphos is actually a short sword used in ancient greece maybe just maybe he called it a dagger cuz it may confuse other people because of its size.
medieval daggers ranged from 23-38cm long on average (9-15 inchs) seems of suitable length,. maybe a little long but not outrageous Edit: just looking at it again it is most definitely longer than that hahaha ignore me
@@keeegz95 as always ppl back then where WAY less precise with descriptions etc then we are nowadays in terms of 'bla bla bla size is a dagger anything above that is a short sword' it realy didnt matter to them aslong as it was sharp and you can poke things with it. but nowadays its important to categorise ancient relics as precise as possible so you can compare them to finds of different places etc
really nice to see you return to something basic and have you talk to the cameras about the details, heating, forging and the minutiae of the task at hand. great vid!
That is why I love UA-cam you see a lot of things that are done not just because they are useful or profitable but because they are cool and that allows creativity to flourish
With the attention for detail this channel loves. I'd like to see them do an ornate articulate set of plate mail. Gold and jeweled inlay, with a matching dress sword. Tell me that would be amazing!!!
i love that you can actually hear the power hammers in this and its not drowned out by music for once. hearing that anyang (idk i i spelled that right and i dont wanna google it) breathe is just incredible. the tools are just as alive as the people using them!
Every time I see Alec work on pieces like this an the effort and craftsmanship that goes into this, it makes me wonder about the ancients craftsmen that didn’t have access to power tools and modern forges and how long it would of taken to produce a sword like this.
I think this is the first time I've seen Alec Forging anything on his own in a while and I like it everything he makes turns to Gold it seems like to me that is. Either way it's away's awesome watching him forge
Wow, that sounds like a whole load of work! And if you're making something Bronze age, then wouldn't forging bronze be historically wrong anyway, when they just cast everything they needed?
I love how Will and Alec show flubs and failures. It shows that they are still learning even after becoming professionals. Kudos to you young men! Keep up the good work!
Seeing over 100k views and only 7k likes tells me soo many people are forgetting to appreciate your work but loving it enough to check it out all the time Love your stuff don’t ever stop 👍
In Greek Xiphos is writed ξίφος ," the starting "ξ" sound more like "ks" in English and not with X which in English sounds more like "Z" in most words with a starting X .So Xiphos sound more like Ksiphos when you try to pronounce in English.I know it seems weird but since the word is straight up conversion of the letters(and not a very thoughtful one) of a Greek word I thought it would be better to know the actual pronunciation of the word.
Not sure the stories of the flags on your workshop walls, but as a Wyoming native, my state’s flag on your wall with a light on it caught my eye! Love watching your videos and your positive can-do attitude!
A leaf shaped blade has always been one of my favorites to swing. The slimmer taper near the hilt leaves to the mass balanced closer to the point and swings with a pull through similar to a machete. On a smaller more mobile double edged blade like a xiphos the combination of power and maneuverability in your striking really adds up.
Awesome little project. Great to see more Whack Whack. Forging that bronze looks like fun. Although I missed Will's punny banter, it was a good video. Have a beautiful day guys.
Alec, you should try 10% aluminum bronze. You can make wicked cool knives out of it because you can oil quench it to make it very hard. The aluminum acts like the carbon in steel, and precipitates out of the bronze when you quench it. You can actually see it happen because the bronze becomes more silvery and less of the bronze color.
Quench at very dull orange, about 1400-1500 degrees. Oh also, when your bronze overheats, you can somewhat correct the grain structure by hammering it at lower heats as long as it didn’t fall apart on the overheat.
Hey Alec! I'm a very big fan of your work and I enjoy every single episode of you making stuff and I was wandering if you could please make a Chinese Guan Dao polearm. It would be just awesome seeing you and Will work on one of those! Much love from Romania! 🇷🇴
Like a kinda ring with different themes or something, Patrick said he was down in a Livestream, and said to comment on your videos, you have a lot of the same viewers so that would be amazing
Thanks for such amazing video! Few videos ago I suggested an idea to forge a dagger and my dream comes true. It's pleasure to see such beatiful piece of work, even not (yet) finished. Hope it may be a good addition to your live workshop exhibition of cold weapons and also level up your experience in forging bronze to next level
Audible IS a great sponsor for older guys like me who can listen with hearing aids 'forever' but whose eyes get tired much too soon. Hearing those voices is a lot like having an intelligent companion nearby. MEANWHILE, THE GREEK BRONZE SHORT SWORD is very interesting: how will THAT work on your 'Patented' fruit compote slashing test?
Thank you Alec for getting back to talking and teaching... Not just showing off, Not that you don't deserve to show off a bit.. ! Good work thank you again.
Why don't you do a project where forge the project out to final dimensions and don't do alot of grinding, only for cleaning it up and sharpening. Even if it is only a small knife or axe head
They waste so much material on their projects! However, if you're not confident in your skills its the best way to ensure your piece turns out despite clumsy forging.
This is just a guess, but I think that forging to the limit opens the door for a big failure and this is something that a youtuber cannot afford. OK - once or twice it will be accepted by the mass public, but if it becomes a norm then the views (and as result money) will decline. Still I agree that for an axe or small knife it will be a great project.
Watching you hand forge and explain each step is what made this channel great. Since your move it’s been a bit more fluff. Good to see you return to your roots.
I just recently found your channel, but I have to say, it’s amazing! Now for the suggestions: there’s an Indian dagger called a haladie, which is essentially a two-sided curved dagger. I think that forging it would create a unique challenge. Maybe something to think about.
I tried to make a little Xyphos style dagger like that out of 1084. Much tougher than it first appears, I was not successful! Fun build, excited to see the end result!
Alec I believe that bronze is actually ampco bronze. If so it's actually a lot like machining aluminum because it's got aluminum in it. Very easy and nice to machine we use it quite a bit at work. Tip when using it. Whatever you would normally cut aluminum with use it for this material itll work just as well.
Thanos infinity gauntlet for next project. It has it all, forging, casting, engraving, gem-setting and the ability to erase half of all life in the universe.
i would really love to see you do a video where you just make up demascus paterns than use patterns that you already know, just an episode of experimentation
"Here we are on episode 78 of the Bronze Dagger where I hopefully finally get these greek precious stones set in place in this new design I went to another class to learn."
For a twist, we've done a Damascus steel wire inlay bordered in gold, and those channel set diamonds are truly stunning. If you saw our last episode, you'll remember our trip to the ancient forest to retrieve primordial oak harvested from from a colony of trees that has stood since the bronze age.
More Bronze Age stuff made out of bronze would be a lot of fun to watch. Especially if you're daring and try doing it super "old school"...honestly it'd probably be better to do it that way so you don't overheat the material.
If you can find some soap stone you can make a mold and pour a Bronze sword. Your carving skills are outstanding. I would love to see that.
Agreed, then you can cold forge the edges for strength
Only just watched this episode and was going to say this myself in comments. Casting would have been the traditional way for bronze unlike connan films making cast iron swords lol. Happy days all
@@infamousjustice7083 Agree
Its also a lot more viable in terms of profit, 1 mold can cast hundreds of swords that could be sold. and it cuts down the manual labour.

Any material: exists
Alec: OMG, it's just like butter
John Miller you needed the : exists but still pretty cool
I can’t believe it’s not butter
Levi Dyer u mean u can’t believe it’s no butter ,,,spray lol
That's cause he buys the expensive stuff hahah
John Miller correction: *buhttah
You should name Will’s power hammer Lil’ SeBASHtian
Agent Stache I both support and appreciate you.
Yyeeesss. He definitely needs to do that
Or similarly, Bashful - kind of ironic, like a large man named Tiny.
Anyone else reading that in Sean Connerys voice?

Title of video: dagger
What he forges: THE SIZE OF HIS ARM
It's a dagger, Alec is just really tiny! ;)
It's a long-dagger, don't worry about it
The xiphos is actually a short sword used in ancient greece maybe just maybe he called it a dagger cuz it may confuse other people because of its size.
Alec: "Is this your first time forging bronze?"
Will: "Successfully, yes."
Alec: ... _please don't break my dagger_

I wanna hear the story of Will's unsuccessful attempts
Alec: I'm making a bronze dagger!
Also Alec: makes big stabby boi
Ori that is a T H I C C dagger.

Always enjoy watching when you are working mostly with your hands. Something more hypnotic than doing it strictly with power tools.
Bronze is such a cool material to see worked! Thanks for sharing, Alec!!
Adam Dufrenne yeah it’s also the same rank my teammate are

It's actually hot when it's worked.

The minimal amount of supercuts where a welcome return for this video. I've missed the sound of the hammer and Alec explaining things.
Love that y’all push yourselves way outside your comfort zones. Great stuff.
The slight look of worry when Will says “Successfully yes” made me laugh.

Or a chat up line.
With bronze you want a very dark red
And after every other heat you should heat cycle bronze
Wow, that sounds like a whole load of work! And if you're making something Bronze age, then wouldn't forging bronze be historically wrong anyway, when they just cast everything they needed?
I agree but if it’s for show then take the time do it right so you don’t burn through the material

What an absolute geezar this fella is. Wish I had half the forging talent he has.

We actually pronounce it: 'ksifos'.
Not that it matters. Great job!

Its a blast that you use diferent materials. Just love it. Cant wait to see the look of it after the grind.
I love the sound of that mechanical power hammer. Reminds me of those old hit-and-miss stationary engines.

casting not forging

you usually cast the shape for bronze before you forge it
I'm into Greek history
I was thinking the same thing, but I assume that this is more about experamenting with scrap than it is about historical accuracy.
