    What works for me..
Tip 1: Cracks almost always extend to the pith (center of log) from the closest side. When carving bears I always try to lean the bears face to the front of the log and put the pith as far to the back of the head as possible. This way the cracks will nearly always end up in th back and not in the face, Notice in this video the bears that were fixed were carved leaning to the rear of the log forcing the crack in the front where the pith was.
Tip #2: Repair the carvings with homemade shims from dried lumber like a 2x4. These are already dry and won't shrink any more. When using srcaps from the log that are still wet the wedges will continue to shrink after the repair. Many people try to use the same wood so the repair is similiar color but I find it never really hides well and it's better to use a 2x4 for wedges and hide it with some creative paint or stain instead.
Just my 2 cents. Good vid Kyle. Thanks

Just wondering why you do not spray water into the crack before applying Gorilla directions on bottle say wet one surface and apply glue to the other siide

What do you use to paint and seal your carvings?

I various different paint’s depending on the piece. If I need to just do quick base colors I will use spray paint like rustoleum or krylon. If I need more details I will then mix an acrylic and use my airbrush to add highlights. Once all is dry I will brush or spray an exterior polyurethane over the whole piece any where from 1-3 coat’s depending on the piece

Kyle do you ever use poplar tree logs, I’ve been told to avoid it because it cracks a lot but I’m interested your your opinion as I’ve have the opportunity to get hold of some?

I'm wondering about stablizing soft centers on large diameter cedar logs. I'd like to utilize the entire log for making bears but am not sure how to make the end or top of the piece solid. Or, should I just leave the soft center on the top of the bears head and paint over it?

I don’t get cedar to carve . For me if I’m dealing with soft spots in logs I usually remove them as those spots will absorb water and rot faster in my experience

@@KyleHallwoodworker Thanks Kyle, I've had success with thin CA glue on stabilizing soft spots in salted birch. It's holding out so far. But with the cedar, I hate to have or quarter the log to remove the center.

How about drilling a hole in a center, pith of the wood?

This can help with cracking but no guarantee. I have done a bore cut with the saw before and the carving dried and split completely in half . Lol
