Buffalo, NY buried in potentially-historic snowstorm

- A dangerous lake-effect snowstorm paralyzed parts of western and northern New York on Friday, with 0.91 meters of snow already on the ground in some places by early afternoon.
The storm's severity varied widely due to the peculiarities of lake-effect storms, which are caused by frigid winds picking up moisture from the warmer lakes, and dumping snow in narrow bands.
Residents in some parts of Buffalo awoke to blowing, heavy snow, punctuated by occasional claps of thunder, while just a few miles north, only a few inches of snow had fallen overnight and there were patches of blue sky.
Global's Chief Meteorologist Anthony Farnell is on the ground in Buffalo, N.Y., where he is engulfed in a massive pile of snow.

This stuff is not light and fluffy, it is wet and heavy. High moisture content from the warm lakes, very dangerous on rooftops and roads.
Be careful
Thanks for countering all these veiled celebratory commenters.
Boston here. Not funny.
We call that Elephant snot up here in Canada eh
@@DARWINZOO We aren't getting this.
You're correct. This snow is wet and heavy. The snow will only get lighter when the temperature drops.
I love it! I grew up in Port Colborne 18 miles from Buffalo and I miss snow like this. However it is important to get it off your roof.

Hey
Buffalo NY native. We had a storm just like this almost exactly 8 years ago with 6-7 feet. These are NOT drifts. That is the blanket amount. Had an above ground pool at the time and snow was so high you couldn't see it. Hard to understand unless you're in it.

I had a helicopter in my yard you couldn’t see it
It was so cold that February that my kids school was closed for negative 22° wind chills. Lived in Buffalo all my life, just moved out to Arizona. I do not miss shoveling my car and my neighbors car, the sidewalk and driveway and then driving 40 minutes to work.

Great article. I like watching snow storms.

Just like the good old days! Congratulations Buffalo
Hey
People who must go to work in this, police, fire, rescue, linemen, and health care workers please stay safe!

Hey
I used to live in the Northeast and I just couldn't take the winters. The anxiety of having to get up early and scrape the snow and ice off my car, shovel the driveway and then driving to work in that mess kept me up all night. Now, I just sit back and love watching these winter storm videos from my home in Phoenix, AZ. 😂

@@Over-for-now That's easy.. they won't have too.... power lines go down in way less snow than this. So no power, no bills (I'm being sarcastic, of course), I've yet to hear of the power outtages, but you know it's always a bummer when it snows heavy... I pray for everyone who lives in NY.
I grew up in northern Siberia, this is a drizzle compared to the massive dumps I'm used to. I don't miss it!

This is a lake effect snow so I'm not surprised.
I can’t wait for that here in Minnesota! I think we had one or two good snow falls last year. Usually it’s just a few inches which is nothing. It’s usually too cold to snow here. In New York they have the right temp to create all that snow.
they cancelled winter here in Minnesota we are going right into spring, "after Christmas"
We don’t have the real Minnesota winter this year 😢

I moved from Buffalo to Nova Scotia back in January between back to back snowstorms.. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with that godawful weather anymore.
You do realize that Nova Scotia is a not-infrequent target of hurricanes?
Now that's an odd move to make!
@@danieldickson8591 I do. we just went through Fiona in Halifax. I still prefer it here though. Driving bans mean nothing to most employers in Buffalo. They expect you to risk your life for work. When I lived in Rhode Island there were a few big snow storms. I was in elementary school one year and I remember my mom opening the front door and there was a wall of snow literally. There were more storms like that through the years. We never had a car but taking the public bus was always challenging and impossible when it was real bad. So when ever school started again I still wasn't able to go because 1 it was a very far walk also because of the bus situation. Luckily the school understood the situation I was a happy camper that got to play and help out clearing our sidewalks.
I’ve been to Providence Rhode Island twice both times in the summer. It doesn’t get as much snow as buffalo does it? I’ve been told their snow storms vary.
@@DrystHawk Hello. Correct...In the 29 years that I lived in Pawtucket, we rarely saw accumulations such as in other states and there on Buffalo. But there were a hand full of years that we had to dig ourselves out the front door because it was knee high and it blocked the door. Crazy kinda miss it kind dont ya know. Anyway stay safe and happy holiday's.
@@bambina320 I absolutely loved Rhode Island when I went. I thought the city of Providence was incredibly beautiful and obviously historically beautiful. I’m actually born and raised in Kansas and I can honestly say the snow wouldn’t bother me a bit. If I ever get the chance to move out of Kansas.Rhode Island would be my place to go live.

Back in the '70s you guys got the same snow it's all evolution it's not global warming or cataclysmic freezing it's just the way the world spins
What do you mean by “evolution”?
@@bensmyth450 well Ben did you graduate in the last like 6 years you don't know what evolution is. Evolution is the concept of time that we all grown up with dates back to millions of years. So we've had dinosaurs and all kinds of things on this planet that we live on. I'm 56 years old I remember snow banks in Iowa being 12 ft tall and then it got warm and not so much but is in the evolution or the as the world evolves every 50 to 60 years the world gets hot and it gets cold glaciers melt they cool down the water which makes it snow more which you can see right now because New York's getting 5 ft of snow and it'll get bad for about 5 years and then it'll even out and it'll get hot again as it evolves. So does that explain it enough for you there bucko
It's different cycles which has been happening since the earth got an atmosphere. also, the universe is made up of carbon so there I no carbon crises only propaganda
The world spins a lot dumber than it did in the 70s...that's de-evolution
@@jamesbroderick9106 I appreciate your poor summary of the theory (you left out natural selection), but I know what evolution is. What I didn't understand is how you thought it was relevant. A large body of data highly suggests that the changes in Earth's climate in recent decades (including the 70s), such as more intense storms, are a direct result of human activity. It makes a lot of sense: Where did all our manufactured, industrial waste go? Well, it didn't disappear. It just got too big, and now it's messing with complex Earth systems. I suppose you could say that climate change is the biggest consequence of human evolution, and if that's what you meant, then I agree with you.
Warmer lakes make more snow.
