How to clean block paving

  • In this video I demonstrate the way that block paving can be successfully cleaned using a pressure washer. This is the third video in my recent pressure washer series. I used a Karcher K5 which came with the brilliant surface cleaner which, as I state in the video, has a power control knob which can be set to minimum and I believe this is essential for work on block paving. The video was delayed due to outstanding work on the driveway.

    😎I think you may have been born to produce video tutorials sir. Great advice delivered in a no nonsense manner and overall extremely watchable. When I opened the box for my new Karcher K5 I was quite annoyed at the fact that "some assembly was required" and a glance at the instructions had me headed straight for the internet to see if there were any videos showing step by step, dreading the experience as so many videos are so hard to watch. Imagine my surprise and pleasure when I came across the three wonderful videos you produced on how to assemble and use the K5 properly. One would assume you work for the BBC on a professional production, so informative yet entertaining and done at a pace that was just perfect to follow, not rushed through or moving at a snails pace and frustrating me into skipping anything to get to the point. In addition to the task I bought the K5 for, I am now itching to try it out on my car and driveway too. Thankyou so much Peter.

I’m about to have a go at my drive during the current dry spell, came across your video and feel fully prepared. Your presentation manner is so welcoming that I am now going to subscribe and check out your other work. Feel proud that your personality is encouraging me to seek more jobs to do. Hi Peter I am a fan of yours and have been a subscriber for some time . I really like your workshop videos and your Festool reviews I have become a Festool fan on the strength of what you have said and advised . I am a professional drive cleaner this is main activity within my business. I would like to offer some advise with your latest video on drive cleaning for best results . I would advise that all weeds and moss are treated with weed killer and moss killer prior to cleaning and that the pressure setting be set to max on your rotary to remove the dead matter in one pass thus saving time and water . There may be some removal of loose surface degradation caused be the sun but I find the most economical way. My machine has 22 litres per minute and a force of 230 bar set in a rotary of 25 mm from the surface. I hope you don’t mind my comments as I think we can help the public understand more about there block paving thank you best regards Richard

      Hi Richard, That is fantastic advice and I hope that other viewers will take the time to read it. I had asked a local block paving installer for advice but I can see the logic of what you say. I assume that a little more sand will be removed but I did find that it was very easy to replace. Many thanks. Peter

      @@NewBritWorkshop Thank you Peter It would seem that the sand that is cleaned out at higher pressure, but under the rotary it stays in the joint as it drops back down as the forward speed of rotary cleaning is quite slow. its the old adage of slow and steady wins the race. The reason we would moss kill prior to cleaning is that the live moss spores will simply spread and recolonise to form in all the joint once a little moisture is given to the fresh sand.
      Thank you
      Richard

    Peter, two points if I may. One, not all paviours need kiln dried sand as it depends on what type of ground the paviours are laid on. I suggest checking with the paviour manufacturer if at all possible. Second, a regular application of Patio Magic will inhibit moss growth etc.

    Do you need the sand if the block paving is just for walking across and not a driveway?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  4 місяці тому +1

      It is best to use sand as the paving could become uneven. Peter

    Hi Peter, a lot more work than I expected. How often do you do this? We have York stone on our hard surfaces here and it's a lot easier to clean with the pressure washer. Good trick to "sweep" off the muck using the patio attachment lifted up and tilted. I do it using the fan shaped nozzle but this looks a good idea. WKR Mike

      @NewBritWorkshop  3 роки тому

      Hi Mike, I am new to block paving but from my research I am expecting that once every 5 years will be enough. It was a day and a half of work for me but if I were fitter (or 10 years younger) I would easily manage it in two half days. - the second half day would be after the paving was dry and ready for the sand. I hope you are safely back from your travels. Cheers. Peter

    Outstanding sir, ……..actually it was your channel that inspired me to get my own pressure washer (I bought a K2), I used it on my rear patio which were ugly green/dark grey paving stones.
    The results were stunning, the patio slabs returned to a light beige and have remained that way, and I got an additional unexpected benefit as well, when the sun beats down on the patio in the early morning it now reflects directly into my kitchen filling the room with bright natural light. Brilliant stuff.
    Now I’m going to pluck up the courage to do my block paved driveway.

    LOL, I'm really glad that I bought a patterned concrete driveway around 20 years ago (grey, looks like real cobbles - you wouldn't know even close up) , hardly a mark or a weed on it in all those years. Occasionally run a hose (not pressure washer) over it to remove any general muck. I watch my neighbours doing this block paving nonsense EVERY year - painful (for them :-)

      It is a Ketler 4' x 5' storage unit. I have had mine for about a year and it has been subject to all sorts of bad weather. Water does not get in. I do not keep bins in it but have put shelves in so that I can store gas bottle, petrol cans as well as sand and cement. It is brilliant. Cheers. Peter

      @@NewBritWorkshop Hi Peter. Thanks so much for sending me your plans. I will need to make a few adjustments as you have suggested. I was intending to to do a 10x10 hole top which will be a hinged top on a rolling box which contains some timber odds and ends as well as some Festool kit including an 800mm rail. My Festool table is the 800 model which I have had for about 25 years and never really used with the rail and attachments. So my rolling box is to provide a second support base for larger pieces of material as well as being a cutting area for future projects. I had intended that the top would only be 1064mm square but still have some options as I have not cut it yet. Bought your book and am enjoying the unfolding plot. Thanks again Peter.
      Kind regards
