Jaguar F-Type R 5.0 Supercharged - Can this 540 bhp V8 beast win over an XKR fan? - Beards n Cars

  • The Jaguar F-Type is an excellent and widely loved choice of sports car, and its not difficult to see why. With a lovely V6 to these supercharged V8's, it bodes well for an XK replacement. And with AWD its performance advantage over the outgoing GT is apparent.
    But even so, can the F-Type, a decidedly more sports car approach to a flagship performance model, tempt away an ardent XKR fan such as myself? Let's review the supercharged 5.0 Jaguar F Type R and find out...

    I have never driven an XKR, I went from VXR's straight to an F-Type AWD R all black. It's my swan song of motoring. What a way to go out! I have achieved 40 mpg on a moderate run up the A303 from Plymouth to Gatwick amble cruising so the return is possible, but boring. People love these cars when seen on the road. Great review.

    F-Type is one of the few real sports cars in the last decades. It's small as a sports car should be. Actually it's a bit like air cooled 911's in that sense. Modern 911's are HUGE and look almost like GT cars in comparison. Cayman these days is more like the old classic 911 really (although not even nearly as good looking as those old classics).
    F-Type has always been an attractive car to me. The sounds, the looks, the "spirit"... XK is more like Porsche 928. The last real Jags to me, I don't care for the electric vehicles and SUVS.

      Yeah the Cayman and Boxster are definitely ironically closer to the traditional 911 size these days

    Great review. Totally agree with you. I have driven the F type R and it is a fantastic drivers car but i much prefer the XK which I have which is also the older 4.2 version

    Ian Callum did a masterful job pushing Jaguar (and Aston Martin) into the 2000's. I own a 4.2L XK and love it for its more refined, relaxed attitude, but I do think Ian matured his own concepts with the F-Type. The lean overhangs and rounded front and rear corners giving the F-Type an even more solid and "grounded" appearance. Meanwhile, Jaguar engineers rose to the occasion evolving the drive train and suspension. Shame, Jaguar didn't see fit to develop a replacement XK but the market as a whole isn't asking for that, so here we are.

      Certainly is a Jaguar for a different time. The only way I could see the XK ever returning now is as a future EV-GT. Which I would personally be open to since Maserati are the only brand making a true electric GT car, but it would doubtless be controversial

    • @stevecofer857
      @stevecofer857 Рік тому +1

      @@beardsncars controversial, maybe, maybe not. Its possible that after the market is flooded with SUV's and trucks, maybe Jaguar will step forward with an XK EV. Like you, I would take a serious look. Hey, we can dream.

    Another great review sir. I have this car and previously owned a 2006 Maserati gransport. I love the 2016 f type r but sometimes feel myself missing the more raw drive experience of the Maserati. The f type is just more difficult to have fun with. When you step on the gas the speed is really way more than you need.

    Did one even better.
    Used F type AWD V6 S. VAP E85 tuned. Full dynamic stuff, 550hp, 496ft lbs, lighter, put on forged wheels in SVR size....perfect, affordable Jaguar super sports car....40k USD out the door used. Superb balance too...the V8 is heavier...my car is about 3500lbs.

    I had a 4.2 XKR for 5 years and have had my 5.0 XKR for a similar period. I test drove an F Type SVR last year and that is probably the only one I would consider but couldn't justify the difference in price to upgrade, especially as my XKR has been tweaked so has slightly more power than the SVR. Maybe one day, but the XKR is a better all rounder.

    I Love your Channel Mr. Beard, I'm learning so much about Jaguars, and you have got me looking for one. Live in south Florida, so hoping to be able to find one to my taste. I was really looking for a Convertible but the Coupe is so Beautiful, I'm confused what I "Really" want.. a red one would make my Wife Happy and come on board, they are somewhat rare, but not the Grays, Blacks, dark colors hid the lines of the car.. hope I can find a Supercharged one,...

    I've never driven an F type, or XKR for all that, I have an XJ supercharged. I'd probably go for the XKR 5.0 ltr but saying that, I'd drive an F Type R and make the choice then. To me Jaguar have lost their way, they're known for GT cars, sports cars and powerful luxury saloons. And they've stopped or are going to stop next year, every single model that ticks those boxes. I'll never ever buy an electric Jag. Sacrilege.
