I played snare drum/percussion in the New Sousa Band from 1996 to the present. Mr. Terry Heilman, shown here on bass drum, was a high school friend of mine who had a career in the U. S. Army Band. He passed away last year. I got to meet many fabulous musicians while playing with this band, and it's been a great experience traveling across the United States, Japan and China (though I wasn't on the China tour...).
went to high school with charlie daval,,the trumpet soloist he got in boston symphony but didnt syat too long..i always wondered why he got axed?

Never saw this before. Its great love it. Used to collect early records. Had cricus galop, high-school cadets and the sunshine of paradise all recorded ca 1895/96 and stars and stripes in 1897. Cylinders.

Why does the band have both cornets and trumpets?
Cornets are rounder in tone whereas trumpets are sharper. Cornets are conical but trumpets are cylindrical. Think of it this way the transition between the mouthpiece and the bell in cornets is slower than the trumpets which have a faster transition between the mouthpiece and the bell. If you’re familiar with electronics, visualize the air passages as antennas construction and the reflected power i.e. VSWR.this is how I visualize this and others may use the term of Overtones.❤
