I also do a modified method. I have to clarify once a week though. I use a brush or wide tooth comb in the shower. I have to wash or wet my hair at least three times a week. Warmer weather I can let my hair dry naturally, but more often than not, I use a diffuser. I stopped following the curly girl rules a while ago. My hair is much happier now. It was getting thin from the strict curly girl method, I believe this whole heartedly. Going back to what I call "old school" has worked wonders for my hair: less fall out and my thinning hair feels much more thicker than it has been. My basic routine: wash, condition, sometimes a leave in, but not always, finish with a gel, scrunch with a t-shirt, a couple of clips for root volume, let it air dry a bit and diffuse. I stopped plopping because I found that my hair looks exactly the same without doing it, so saves me some time. I watched your diffusing video and that surprisingly works well for me. I agree using what works for you no matter the "ingredients" is key. Great video!

It is so crazy to hear how many curlies flourish once they quit the curly girl method! I am so glad you have found a routine that works best for you! ☺️

I follow it a little. Like I don't do sulfates and parabens but I do clarify like 2 times a month. I also use a comb to detangle. Squish to condish works though. Now, the BOWL method totally works for me! Your hair is GORGEOUS!

Aw thank you so much!! It's so great to find things that work best for your hair!! I have yet to try the bowl method, but I need to!!

I think what I've seen mostly, which I did and would recommend to others, is people following CGM more strictly for the first 6-12 months and then seeing what works best for their hair after they've gotten over the initial transition phase and gotten more comfortable with "listening" to their hair. I brush my waves upside down the morning before wash day and shampoo every other wash. I probably break some other rules too, but I couldn't tell you what ones since there are so many.

Súper helpful. Thank you. Before using cgm, I was washing my hair daily and using products I enjoyed. I decided to try out our so many things.. and my hair is miserable 😢. Now I’m doing what makes me and my hair happy. It’s a modified method for me now.

I'm only getting into CGM, and I know a strict CGM routine just wouldn't work for me - I'm an athlete and work out on 5-6 days a week, so washing it only once a week when I really sweat almost every day would not work, I need to wash it every other day, maybe every 3 days. Also I noticed my hair cannot handle all the products CGM includes, it will just feel super heavy and my waves will stretch out a lot faster, and I am just too lazy to put all the effort in it and feel like it would just cost me too much time. So I am super happy you make these videos about your own modification of CGM, because it sure encourages many just like me to see the CGM as recommendations that might work instead of strict rules and guidelines. Thanks Tay!

Thanks Tay! Im trying a modified method. The strict CGM does not work for my hair! I appreciate you mentioning about the problems with hard water. Im in the same boat 🛶 here, lol. Hoping to let my hair be its natural self. Im so used to styling it all of the time but my hubby loves it curly, so im giving it a try🙋🏻‍♀️

I've been curly all my life, 40 +, and your spot on! I use wide comb in shower, only blow dry if I'm in a hurry, every few days wash as needed.

I used the CG method for years...and it didn't really work. Buildup was a problem, and my colored hair needed SO MUCH moisture. Be your own experiment of one (n=1) and use what works!

I've had curly hair all of my life, but I never understood what to do with it. Over the last 4 months, I have been experimenting with the CGM method. I've been dialing into an actual routine for my hair and my hair is slowly getting healthier. I've found that I need way more products than I first thought because my hair needs have been changing. I've had to learn more as well. I have an oily scalp, but dry ends. The thing that took the longest to learn is how to find the products that I need and when to use them. I'm hoping that the modified CGM method I've come up with will work. Fingers crossed.

The thing I’m most careful with is shampoo/conditioner, since I’m allergic to a lot of them. I’ve found I tend to do better with the sulfate free ones. Otherwise, if a product works, I use it, and I clarify every so often.

I find that the CGM involves way too many products...I prefer to keep things simple. However my favourite two takes are: squish to condish & using a t-shirt instead of a towel to plop or dry.🌸

I think ingredients are very subjective based on your hair and how you like it to feel and also this is HUGE- your water quality! If you have hard water or well water, as I do, sulfate free shampoos are rendered pretty much useless. Our water is well water with iron in it, and iron bacteria. It’s gross. We use shower head filters, and I use an ACV rinse before and after washing to remove as much of the minerals and metals as possible. Sulfate free shampoos create a weird foaming sensation that doesn’t go away at the scalp, like it clings to the mineral and metal deposits, and so instead of removing dirt and oils, you just added some foamy shampoo to them. But sulfate shampoos actually remove some of the minerals and metals and leave your hair cleaner. Also there are other ingredients that build up and are difficult to remove, polyquats are terrible on my hair they make my hair gummy and tangled when wet and greasy when dry, worse than most silicones. So I stay polyquat free as well.

I have tried the curly girl method I have wavy curly hair and using too many products weighed my hair down and when I get out of the shower or the bath or washing my hair I normally clarify my hair about every two weeks I use a mild shampoo and a good conditioner and after shampooing and conditioning, I dry my hair without microfiber towel or T-shirt and my waves and curls are already defined without scrunching or gels! I have found what works best for my hair and I feel that the curly girl method is too regimented and it takes too long and as a child my mother would not let me use heat on my hair not even a hair dryer and that was back in the 60s, I air dried my hair and it always was wavy or curly when it dried I did not have to scratch it I did not have to fluff it, I respect the ladies that are using the curly girl method and it brings out the curls and waves in there, I was born with curly hair and my mother knew how to take care of the curly hair and how she had it cut and she kept it healthy and I am doing the same thing now as an older adult, we have to do self-care for our hair just like we do the rest of our bodyAnd whatever products works for One’s hair care and brings about the beauty and the healthiness of one’s hair and scalp is what is required of a person

Thank you so much for your comment Jose! I totally agree with you! Everyone needs to do what works best for them. Curly hair care definitely doesn't look the same for everyone (:

I've been dealing with curly hair for 47 years. I tried the curly girl method but there are way too many rules. I do blot & dry which is part of the curly girl. That does work for me. I use a wide tooth comb when I'm conditioning it in the shower. I wash my hair every 3 days. Anything over that doesn't work for me. I think we all have to figure out what works the best for us and go for it. I've been using the same shampoo, conditioner, and product for 30 years. To be honest, I haven't even looked at the ingredients because it works for me.
