So I bought and received the Hel-2 and a pair of HD 6XX headphones after watching this video. Let me tell you, going from earbuds on the Dual Sense to this new set up is almost indescribable. The Power, clarity and 3D audio is the real deal. I almost cant even believe the difference. Talk about Immersion, it feels like I'm actually in the worlds I play in. I'm grateful that I came across your video, been sitting here researching headsets and sound quality for consoles. Eventually came across dacs and amps, so that's where my focus is at now, gathering as much info as I can. I have cash set aside for the Astro A40 Tr w/mix amp (as that was my plan purchase) but I'm happy, realizing, that there are many more options out there with great sound quality and some priced even cheaper. Welcome! I’m glad it helped you out. There is no wrong answer even though Reddit and self-proclaimed audiophiles will tell you differently. Astro is a great product and I still use them for my gaming PC. Hope you find something that makes you grin from ear to ear. 😊
Check out the audeze penrose or the steel series 7P+. I’ve got a very solid 7P+ eq settings actually a few different settings if you or anyone know needs them. Btw channel owner, your channel is amazing man I thoroughly enjoy every single video I watch!

Hey newcomer to the channel. My friends and I constantly debate which set up is better, wired vs wireless. Thanks so much for outlining the ps5 optical cable fiasco so clearly. I am using the Steelseries wireless pro and loved them. However I miss the detail after losing the optical out port.
In the mail I have VZR Model One headset with the Hel 2’s coming in a couple of weeks. I’m hoping this will make a wonderful pair. Also hoping for some 3D sound. I’m a bit sad it won’t have 5.1 virtual, but from what I have researched I should not be too concerned.
Hello and welcome! Your new setup sounds awesome and I think you’ll be really amazed. Regarding wired vs wireless, its a convenience thing.
Wired will always be objectively better. Especially with higher impedance performance headphones. But the trade off is cables. Amplifiers, pre-amplifiers, and usually a separate microphone solution too. All-in-one headphones are pretty convenient. Plug and play. But you’ll never get the same quality signal.

Thanks for the review. I put an order in this morning. I've been enjoying the sound of my Sennheiser HD650's straight out of my iMac 27", but also knew that having extra juice to drive those 600 ohm rated cans would likely reveal more detail and make for an even better listening experience. With Apple Music soon to offer 24/192 as a standard part of their stream, the HEL 2 seemed a perfect addition to my system. That it is also a solution to PS5 audio connectivity issues is "icing on the cake." PS - I think you are going to LOVE the Sennheiser 650's. Looking forward to your thoughts.

Those headphones are not being driven properly at all. Probably doesn't even sound right.
Got mine yesterday and I am really happy with it. I was already using a Modi/Magni stack on my PC with Sennheisers HD 660s.
Received mine yesterday and had to return it today. How is your mic clarity when the Windows (and/or gain knob) is above 80%? No complaints in conference calls?

I bought the Steelseries GameDac to customize the sound of my Sennheiser GameOne specially adding some bass and keeping the details, so far im loving it. It's signal is very clean and powerful, it has a 10 point EQ. You can give it a try too ✌️🍻
There was the Mayflower ARC MKII or even the MKI which had PS5 compatibility before the Hel 2.

How is the audio quality from the usb vs from hdmi to tv to optical? Is the dunamic range the same?

Nice review. I've been thinking about picking one of these up. I'm currently using a Sennheiser GSX 1000 with Phillips X2HR headphone. Do you think this is a worthy upgrade? If I bought this should I also look to get a better headphone to take advantage of all that juice?
Thanks Rory. I think you have a nice set . . . I really love the Schiit Hel-2 and I highly recommend it. It is light years ahead of what I was using before, but in your case, you may only see marginal gains. It's not cheap, either. I wish they had better ways to test these to see, it's so hard post-COVID and stores closing, etc. Good luck on your decision either way :)
Hi, thanks for the review. I’ve seen a few Reddit posts etc complaining about latency/delay. Have you noticed any or have any comment? I’m in Canada so trying something out and seeing isn’t so much of an option.

Thank you! For chat mix volume, use the PS5. The Schiit only has a master volume for all sound.
Have you compared the fulla E or the Fulla 4 to this one. I’m trying to get a good DAC/AMP that just has clean power with minimal distortion. I don’t really mind the 3D audio

All connections on this unit are USB-C connections.

Thank you for this informative video! Does this work with iems/earpieces which tend to be more sensitive? I'm afraid that things might get too loud too soon on the volume knob even on low gain.
Hello, yes, it will work with anything, even lower impedance headphones. Even with my 300 Ohm impedance cans, it drives them too loud -- I use the boost on, but only about 15% volume. With lower impedance devices as you mentioned, you'll probably boost off with a lower volume, but the sound field should be much clearer and richer.

Thx mate, been waiting for this review.. Im happy with my current setup, LG CX tv, Astro Amp, Sennheiser. This is for gaming only. When I listen to music Ive got my HiFi system. However I just might give this a chance..
Wow, sounds like you've got a very similar setup to me. I love my Astro MixAmp, a lot -- but this is light years ahead in terms of pure amplification. The EQ settings, I kind of thought I missed, but the more I've used the Hel-2, the more I've realized I don't need them.
How big is your TV? And do you use it more like a monitor. I've been looking into getting that tv
@@freddyflores288 Its a 55”, and yeah Im using as a monitor basically. Main point here is your distance to tv. Its crucial that you kan see the mini map without moving head, and with a minimum of eye movement - but still as close to tv as possible. Ultimatly a compromise of course (yes we are talking FPS games here 🤷♂️

My current (temporary) solution is 3.5mm to RCA from the DualSense to an amp for solo play, but when i play with friends have to pull out the old TurtleBeach TAC via USB to run my P38X headset. The main issue is that I lose the channel mixing feature on the TAC, but i'm not sure what my end solution will be. I keep hoping they'll add support for UAC-2 so I can use my current DAC/amp setup, but I don't think it's a common enough problem for Sony to worry about, yet. Thank you for these videos, though. I've been trying to find PS5 audio coverage since launch and almost no one talks about setups for "audiophile" gear.

@@vypermajik it gets the job done. If they added UAC-2 support, that would be the perfect fix, but I’m not holding my breath and I might start looking for some balanced DACs that support UAC-1. Running analog out from the controller is definitely adding some noise (albeit mostly unnoticeable) and I get random popping during loading screens in some games.
@@vypermajik one thing I'm curious about is if the new update (for outputting 3d audio signal via HDMI) will allow us to run that signal via optical from a TV to a DAC/amp. I'd love to see your take on that when the update drops (if you're able). I think that could be a good solution to a lot of people's setups, provided the signal isn't skewed to only work for TV speakers.

Just confirming the hel2 and hd800 are a beast of a combo blows everything else out of the waters that I own dt990 dt1990 hd660s hd58x hd560s shp9500 none get close to the sound stage and imaging
I’m very jealous. I really want the 800 but it’s so expensive. I felt weird spending $400US for mine - the 800s are like $1,600! But enjoy the hell out of them for me. 🤘
Before I couldn’t imagen how bad ass they can be when I wore the 560 or 660 I was like nah but I went for it and now I’m like hold up shit there is a mosquito at our 9 o clock around shoulder height like 15 steps behind us hahahah

Hi Luke... it's a six foot USB-C to USB-A cable. I bought my own to run them along the wall, but the standard ones are 6 feet.

Can the hel 2 give that surround affect like Epps 1000 ? Wide sound stage
Great video, very informative. I have a PS5 and an arctis 7p headset, overall it's great but occasionally I experience some crackling sounds during loud moments. Would a dac stop this happening? It doesn't happen constantly but once you notice it it's difficult to ignore when it happens.
I've exhausted all other options....played with eq settings, 3D audio on and off, wired and wireless etc. Even tried a friend's headset (razer blackshark V2) and it does the exact same thing so I'm convinced it's an issue with the ps5 sound itselft rather than the headset.
Any advice would be appreciated as you know your sound tech a lot more than I do.

So before you go buy a new headset, can you double check you aren’t getting interference from other devices? Make sure it’s a clear line of sight, there isn’t an external hard drive nearby, etc.
You may also want to try a powered usb hub. Powered externally via wall plug should also assist with grounding / humming / buzzing issues. I use that for my microphone at home and it fixed the issue.
Lastly, a DAC would absolutely help but I would not recommend your current headphones with it. By plugging into a DAC you are obviously losing out on wireless but also side tone since you are swapping the internal amplifier to external.
I always recommend wired for this reason and prefer it but understand many prefer the freedom of no wires. Good luck and let me know if the grounding issue persists even after some ideas above. 😎
Gaming headphones and especially Bluetooth ones suck. Sonys proprietary 3d audio is also a gimmick as i find it over ephesizes background noise in games such as wind blowing and thi gs like that. Even the 3D effect enabled for your TV speakers are also going to sound like trash compared to with it off. Just get "REAL" headphones with actual good sound quality from a proper source like what he has here. Or if you're on a budget just get KZ ZSN PRO X for like $24 and a better cable for it to improve the sound even further for $18 and that's just plugging it in directly to the dualsense controller ( never turn on 3d audio in ps5 audio settings)

Hi Joao -- sounds like you've got quite a nice set-up as well. Unfortunately this does not include a "Mix" like the Astro MixAmp -- in other words, no way to mix between game and voice chat. It has to be done solely by the console/computer/individual game. The only knobs for controlling any sound is the volume knob and the microphone knob, but unfortunately no mix knob.

@@TheJPTube you can balance game/chat with the PS5 settings in the party by simply sliding the volume slider more towards what you want to be louder.
great video. i was contemplating placing an order on the Hel 2 but decided to go with the new Fulla 4 instead. done some research and it's more than enough for my needs. Hel 2 would be overkill for my Beyerdynamic Custom Studio (80 ohm) and i'm not planning on getting any harder to drive headphones anytime soon.

@@vypermajik little update........ i decided to cancel my Fulla 4 due to seeing A LOT of complaints on several issues with it. it did say it was "shipped" though a few days after i placed my order, and it was still "awaiting item" for over a week. Schiit replied to my cancellation request saying that the shipment was actually lost and gave me a full refund. ._."

Absolute great and informative video! I am currently looking for a new setup for my ps5. I have had AKG K702 headphones lying in the box for a year due to not having a DAC for them! Would the hel 2 be too much for 702s as I think they are only 62ohms? Great video you explained everything so well makes clear sense now

Hello friend!
No. Only because the Hel 2 is really designed for high impedance headphones in mind. It would be like driving a Ferrari in rush hour traffic. Lots of power but nowhere to use it. If you’re set in the A40, get the accompanying MixAmp from Astro. Both run at lower impedance but sound wonderful together. I have tons of videos on this in my audio playlist.
If you’re set on the Hel 2, go big or go home. Find some comfortable high impedance headphones - the Hel 2 will really drive these for you. I have the Sennheiser HD650s and they sound absolutely incredible. But there are other higher end headphones to look into as well. Just remember you’re looking for a higher impedance. Mine are 300 ohms. Look in that range. Good luck!!
My question is, if you're not using a mic input then surely isn't the fulla 4 a better option seen as it also works with PS5 & is half the price with almost identical sound quality?

@@vypermajik nvm I already got my answer, the fulla 4 is the way to go.
Both support UAC1/UAC2 , and the ability for UAC1 support is the key component for the stupid PS5 decision to not support UAC2
The biggest difference seems to be the mic input, because both are seemingly DAC/Amps not just Amps.

Hey dude great video, it really helped me steer towards the dac/amp + headphone combo. I am interested in getting the sennheiser HD 560s with a dac/amp. Would you recommend this combo for the ps5? Or is there other dac/amps that are better now than this one in the video? Is the microphone usable with this amp if a guy was to add a boom mic? I was also thinking of getting the steelseries arctis nova pro wired headset but I am not sure if they would be worth it over this kind of setup. Thanks👍

I’m partial to Sennheiser but I’ve been using them for 15 years. That said, I believe a DAC/high end headset will always be cleaner sound than any “all in one” type of gaming headset. The trade off will be in cost.
The nice thing about the Hel-2 is that it does support a microphone jack which really opens the door for just about any type of microphone (shotgun, boom, etc).

@@smellycatgamingofficial No worries! Either. If you’re going with a headset that doesn’t have a microphone and doing external, most people either:
Get a small mic and clip it to their shirt (they also make microphone clips that plug on the side of the headphone cable)
Or
Get a nice boom arm microphone and talk into it near a table. Most streamers use this setup.

I think you'll be fine. I will be uploading a video tomorrow (6.5.2021) showing off my setup which involves THREE USB cables and a powered USB hub, and I'll explain how crystal clear the audio sounds. So I think you'll be fine with a single hub.

Hi Mani. On paper, the Sennheiser is a very powerful amp. But will it work on PS5 natively (as in, not using an optical out on the TV)?

No sir, you can't use USB simultaneously. There's a toggle between USB and optical, so you can't get that simultaneously either. I used to use my Astro MixAmp for game audio (optical) and chat via PC (USB) simultaneously, but this DAC is only one or the other, not both.
Hey man, just wanted to let you know back in June I ordered one of these and got it a month later. It was an absolute game-changer for PS5 and PC gaming for me, and I loved it. Unfortunately it stopped working on both my PC and PS5 so I sent it back for RMA. After almost 2 months I finally got it back yesterday and it's already having problems again with intermittent connectivity to my PS5.
While I REALLY like this product, I think Schiit has some issues to work out right now and I wish I could recommend it but I really can't. Hopefully yours has been working well!

What headphone and mic are you using with it?
Using a cheap lavalier microphone and a pair of Sennheiser HD 650s. It sounds ah-maaaaaaaay-zing.

Okay so I had Astros, they broke. I tried a couple headsets and ended up keeping the Drop+EPOS PC38X. Anyway I still use my MixAmp Pro and do use the simulated Dolby and find it far superior to straight stereo for gaming. I also hook my phone up to the MixAmp so I can have Discord going into my ears at the same time as the audio off the PS5. Does this also have an AUX input? Why do so many people say simulated surround is trash and stereo is better for gaming? The Dolby sounds way better, more immersive, and I can localize sounds way better than stereo which just seems far less sophisticated where you have a giant line down the middle between your ears and you don't get the same directionality.
Regarding aux on Schiit - no aux. that’s the one draw back compared to Astro MixAmp but most consoles have applications to control that in game so it isn’t a problem.
Regarding simulated surround - every ear is different. To many (myself included) it sounds too “tinny” and lacks bass. That’s the issue with sound. There is no golden ear. Everybody hears and processes differently. You gotta pick what you like. Your equipment is awesome! 🫡
@@vypermajik It's strange because I've seen people describe simulated surround the way you do and why they don't like it, and it sounds like the problems I have with straight stereo in an FPS game. I do wonder if some of it comes down to equipment too. I'm using optical so the MixAmp can use five channels of audio and then try its best shot at making that experience simulated in the headphones (and I'd argue it does a pretty good job). But I don't have a PC so I don't know how that thing works in those cases. I guess I'm just worried some people are taking a 5 or 7 channel audio stream and that data guides a simulated headphone surround while others are somehow trying to blow out a 2 channel audio stream into a simulated 5 or 7 channel experience, which I could easily assume would be worse. But again never used a MixAmp on a PC nor do I know how to extract multichannel audio from a PC into a headset.
Does this DAC offer side tone mic monitoring control in the PS5 audio settings?

Not via the hardware. Just mic gain controls. I don’t think the PS5 has this feature natively so if that’s important to you I would consider the Steelseries 7p or the PS5 headset.
As a wired IEM guy (have truthear zero), would this amp benefit me still on a PS5? Or is it mainly for higher end headphones?
It’ll work for anything. Cleaner sound, louder song. Maybe not a super great return on lower end cans.

the Hel 2 requires you to also plug it into the wall to power it. that's all there is to it.
Hi Freddie, DAC hooks up to PlayStation 5 via USB cable. USB-A into the console (front or back) to USB-C in the DAC. The DAC also requires a separate power connection, which is also USB-C from a power brick you plug into the wall.
Lol hd560s for ps5 gaming something only someone used to consumer level gear would buy.

Would this work on the Xbox One since it has an optical port?
Can someone answer my question I cant find online, I have a wireless headset (arctis 7p+) that run off a 2.4ghz dongle, however they do come with a audio jack to plug into a dac, my question is would my wireless headset work on this with the wire? And would I just have to plug in the dongle for the headset into the back usb port?
So the wire could be used for the DAC, since it's primary purpose is to use when the headset is dead (no battery). I don't think you'd see much sound improvement this way though, sound quality wise.
Anyone that may stumble upon this video, do look up what games on PS5 actually support 3D Audio and use it for those games, but i recommend to disable it for every other game and just get regular stereo out of your headphones. Too much audio clarity is sacrificed forcing virtual surround in games that didn't bother to implement it imo.

does anyone know why the schiit hel 2e has super loud static coming from audio output that will bleed the ears of the people im talking to. tired changing settings around on the ps5 with no luck. hoping to find help before i just get rid of the thing

@@vypermajik I found a subreddit talking about Hel 2 Input Noise Floor Extremely High . And the person uploaded audio of his issue and it's the exact same as im having. The audio and is completely fine but audio going out (what other people can hear) as loud static. I tried turning the main volume down on PS5 like recommended in that Reddit butdidnt fix anything. Not sure if it's a grounding issue that's allowing static through. I don't know much about audio things. Appreciate the fast reply doubt anyone can help will probably end up getting something to replace it. The product was great when working unfortunately
Nice video, now I am doubting if I should get this or not? I am using an HD560S with a Steelseries Gamedac, I wanted an amp that could fully support 3D audio out of the PS5 through USB-C. It works wonderfully but the Gamedac is an amp designed to power headphones up to 80 ohms. The HD560S are 150 ohms, I don't care about EQ's and I just want the audio straight like the designers ment for it to be. I saw that Creative launched the GC7 but it looks like to much gimmicks to me. Do you think this Hel 2 is worth it and that it would best the Gamedac? I know that the Gamedac doesn't give the HD560S a real workout, there is still more to be extracted from them. This might be the device to do it, thanks in advance and keep up the good work👍

In my limited audio knowledge, I'm realizing the Steelseries and Astro DACs are really very low on the power spectrum compared to other brands. While they are specifically tuned to match their low-impedance headphones, they seem to trade EQ settings for sheer processing power/"umph." The Schiit Hel-2 is no bells or whistles -- just a really, really powerful DAC. It drives my Sennheiser HD650 (300 ohm) to insane levels, and it's crystal clear. You obviously give up the EQ settings but instead get a better sound stage. To me, that's the way to go. But I also appreciate where the Astro A40/MixAmp fits in my gaming history... despite that, I'm a Schiit man now from here on out.
@@vypermajik Thank you for your reply, I can see on their website that they also sell the Fulla 4, the Hel 2 is sold out but the Fulla 4 is available. Might I ask what the key diffrences between the two are? Is the Fulla 4 a downgrade, I mainly play shooters and single player games. I want it to give the HD560's a real workout😅, they seem verry simalair in my eyes.

No party chat, it's just a single volume nob for all volume. Chat would need to be toggled in the PlayStation UI.

I dont know why my ifi zen dac is not working on my ps5. It’s already updated to latest firmware. Already emailed iFi for it. Or maybe the ps5 is the culprit coz my friend’s zen dac is working on his ps4.
Does the zen dac support uac 1? I read somewhere that the PS5 only supports uac 1 despite the ps4 supporting uac 2

This is the right answer. My first Schiit Hel-2 video explains UAC1/UAC2, the standards, and what they mean -- this is why the Hel-2 is so great, since it auto-senses both standards.

I don't know. I wrote them and asked if they'd send me one, the owner was a jerk, so I told them to pound sand and went with Schiit.

I reached out to get a trial pair of Mayflower ARC2 and the Soundblaster G6 and both of them blew me off. So eff those guys. ;)
Damn I have the g6 it does a lot more then the schiit hel but schiit hel you hear how it’s made to be heard everything on point nothing to muddy or mix’s together
@@fliptout86 I agree. The schiit sounds cleaner to me if that makes sense. G6 is cool but there are so many unnecessary features and profiles. Scout mode is cool and the unit is pretty powerful but I'd go with a Hel 2 or Fulla 4 over the G6. I like the G6 I just dont love it.
They're pretty similar. I have both the Hel and ARC (first gen in both cases) and their performance is almost identical. The main difference is the mic input on the Hel is far superior to the ARC. The ARC is functional and that's about all you can say for it. The only other difference of note is the ARC uses USB-A to B or optical for input whereas the Hel uses USB-A to micro or analog for input. The Hel 2 does away with analog input in favor of optical and has about 20% more power. It also does away (finally) with USB micro in favor of USB-C. The ARC 2 has improved microphone throughput and no longer requires external power, though the option does exist. Oh, and it costs about $80 more. Both can work as preamps for powered monitors--though the original ARC only has a passthrough and can't control volume.
I have the Mayflower ARC Mk2 and I am wondering if this would be a step up? I can use a USB cable to the PS5 and can turn on surround sound so I assume the ARC mk2 uses UAC1 from 1998 as well. I use the pc38x headphones. I am soooo tempted to buy the Hel2 . Would love to see an updated FYI I got my ARC mk2 on Black Friday sale $199.

I was to thirsty to wait for the Hel 2 🤦🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️ So I went with the Magni 3+ & the Modi 3+ & made a Schiit stack which got delivered in 4 day's off of their site 😂😂😂 And I was not disappointed one bit. With Gain on high 50% is the max volume my ears can take without me doing any damage to my eardrums. You were right about what you said about the sound & this isn't even the Schiit product you recommended. I ordered the Fosi Q4 Dac & the Neotek Dac off of Amazon just to see how they compare to my Schiit stack. Yeah I know I have fell down the audiophile 🐇 hole 😂😂😂🤦🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️

@@TreSwayy Yes I did my brother & with the Philips Fidelio X2HR's the sound is F'n nice. The Fosi Q4 Dac/Amp is nice as well but the Schiit stack is better. As far clutter goes being wired sucks but it's a small price to pay for that sound quality I'm never going back to gaming headsets again 🤦🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️ What's your gamertag???

Not worried about mic input since I have an antilon mod mic wireless. But you said you did use the stack on the ps5, I bought a cheap dac with UAC1 support that I will route to the dac to feed uac1 support but how did you use the stack if it only supports uac2 which the ps5 doesn't support?
I have the soundblasterx g6 but honestly don't like the grainy sound it produces.
My only gripe with the dt 900 pro x is that it doesn't have enough treble imo, should've gotten the 1990 pro. My PSN ID is OneVerce

Yes. It will drive just about anything. 250ohm for certain (I use 300ohm w/o issue)

Whatever you do if you on PS4 using the hel2 make sure you turn on linear and not Dolby or blistream in the sound settings of the PS4 trust me hahaha you’ve been warned your ears will thank you

Yeah, as I've gotten older (and a smidge smarter!) over the years, I've realized it's best to use the game audio stage as-is. While I do like equalizers and trying to amplify sounds (aka footstep / sound whoring), you ultimately lose something else on the sound stage, so that's why I'm much more interested in getting a high quality signal as opposed to pretending to be a sound engineer. :)

3D audio over hdmi for speakers doesnt enable if settings are set to AV reciever. I forced them through TV setting to my stereo aaaand. no that sounded like weird.
Havent tested directly from TV speakers but even if that works well I wont be gaming like that because TV speakers are astoundingly weak and cheaply made in 99% of modern tv's. and just isnt enjoyable. but maybe that 3D effect actually does work well see.

I was so hyped for tempest, and my dissapointment was massive when tempest audio only worked with official and liscenced gaming headsets, with a buggy UAC1 driver... Sony... 1997 wants its uac1 back... its 2021 and UAC 2 has been a thing since like before PS4 came out....and the jack on the dualsense which transfers over wireless/BT and is extremely compromized as an output.... and also 3D headphone audio over hdmi WASNT a toggle.... FFFFRICKKKK
But no 3D audio over tinny tv speakers... that takes priority here. Sony listen.... No please the headphone crowd first, then the AV surround and stereo crowd, then the soundbar crowd... TV speaker people are the ones who cares the LEAST about audio.

Paired with the PC38X on PC, This is an unbeatable combination for sound quality in gaming and everything else. An inexpensive software equalizer can be tuned to completely flatten the curve and make this system sound like $6000 is totally attainable. I have heard some systems that are that expensive, and with the tuning of the EQ, I basically matched it. The mic in the PC38X is also the best you're gonna get in a headset as well. It's aaaalmost broadcast quality.
