Getting our ducklings the weekend!! My daughter has be begging over and over. Your info and others on line made feel great about having them. Was just going to go with just 2 but now planning to have 4 to 6. Getting a lot free pallets form friend to built a nice coop for them. Thanks again.
Glad I could help! I normally put mine outside when they are about a month old. Are you planning on keeping your ducks primarily indoors? Look up duck diapers if you are.
I appreciate the experienced advice. It seems like tons of people post "let's learn together" duckling brooding videos. I thought about starting a channel when the new additions to our flock arrive next week, so I'm so pleased to have found you because you've saved me a ton of work!
Dad and Sarah Reviews plus Wh6 don’t you offer to help pay for it or buy it completely with your own money or give them facts about ducks for however long it takes them to get convinced it took me a couple months for bunnies but for ducks it didn’t take long cause I am going to pay for the ducks(it only took a couple days)( by the way this isn’t my google account)
Just stopped by on your video... I just bought two ducklings at Tractor Supply... the two I bought are dark brown with light patches(like yours as seen in video).. black beaks and black feet... what breed are they? They are so adorable and affectionate... I previously had two chickens... a Black Silver Lace Wyandotte and a Leghorn... they died of heart attacks 😢 they were two years old...
@@ScorpionRanchTX thank you... that's what I thought as well... they are precious... they give me kisses and cuddles...actually I named them Precious and Cuddles... they sleep next to me in their bunk bed at night..
Wow thank you that's a lot of information in a very short time can you make a video about niacin deficiency and how to treat it also how to help them with electrolytes and vitamins and how to treat them with that there are DIY recipes online but you're very knowledgeable what are your recommendations which kinds and how much to give for how long and you are very informative I like the straw idea a lot luckily there's a feed store not far from here I have a small gang around my house and I think that would really help thank you very much great info!
Glad it was helpful! Purina Flock Raiser has enough niacin for them, but if you have ducklings that are already deficient you can add brewer's yeast to their food, or get niacin pills from your pharmacy. Make sure you get plain niacin, not "flush free" or "timed release". Dissolve 150mg of niacin per gallon of their drinking water. Feed stores should also have poultry vitamin packs; just follow the directions.
Once they are feathered out, any temperature where the water is liquid is fine. How often you have to clean it depends on the size. The larger it is, the less you have to clean. If you can make a natural pond that is self cleaning that is ideal. Typically difficult and expensive to do, however. I have a large water trough for them that I clean about once every two weeks, but also have 3 gal pans and buckets that I clean and fill everyday for them.
Getting some ducks this spring. Any tips on taking care of them? I want to have them free range but I do have a small fenced in area with a coop as well. I have no neighbors and have plenty of land. Any tips?
This was a really good video I wish I saw it sooner and I was looking for duck information yesterday but it was still very helpful I was just wondering if you don’t want to keep it duck as a pet what do you do because I have a baby duckling all by himself that I am taking care of and I want to be able to release him if possible but I’m not even sure yet if that is going to be possible I might end up with a duck pit but I don’t really want one I just want him to live
I'm glad you found it helpful! If you raise a duck by itself it'll definitely be bonded to you and might get depressed if you abandon it. You really shouldn't abandon a domesticated duck in the wild in the first place. They don't have the same capabilities as a wild duck. You can goto the Rescue Ducks facebook group and ask if there is anyone in your area that free ranges their ducks that can take it. That will give it the best life. If it's a wild duckling you found, it's best to turn it over to a wildlife rescue center. They'll be experienced with proper release.
Take away their food dish, wait about an hour, and start offering them food in your hand. Just hold your hand out, be still and talk to them calmly. They'll eventually get curious/hungry enough to eat out of your hand. After doing that a few times they'll start demanding food from you 😆 They'll probably never bond to you like day old ducklings will, but at least they'll know where the food comes from.
Great video. I live in Visalia, California and the temperature right now is between 80 to 100 degrees outside. Can two week old ducklings spend all day outside in that heat under shade and then come into an air conditioned house at night?
I recommend feeding ducklings flock raiser to start off with. Ducks "chew" their food with their gizzard, which requires them to eat dirt and small rocks. Until they've been outside and eaten some of the gritty stuff they can't have whole foods like worms or minnows. They will love that type of stuff, tho. No swimming water until they are 2-3 weeks old. It's easy for them to catch a chill when they are younger.
hey my cousin and i want to get some ducklings soon, she has 2 dogs that don’t like her cat, so i’m worried about if they will hurt the ducklings. would you recommend her getting some?
Ducks are prey animals and some dogs instinctively go after them. Other dogs are perfectly fine with them. It really depends on the dog. You know your dogs better than I do, so you'll have to use your own judgement.
Yes you can, they generally get along fine. Just make sure drakes aren't mounting your chickens. Ducks have a different anatomy and they can really hurt the chickens.
Yes, they can dig under it. Foxes and other critters will dig as well. You can take hardware wire, bend it into an L shape, and place it around the pen to discourage digging.
They have individual personalities. Some are very aggressive, others are chill. You won't really know their personality until they have gone through a spring as an adult.
Room temp, but you want to limit how much they swim and make sure they dry off after they get out of the water. They aren't really "waterproof" until their adult feathers come in.
Wait my deck is that the one month scared shitless of the stage so you’re saying he scared shitless so what am I supposed to do if I don’t hold him he’s going to get wild and scared I don’t know which is better
Hi Scorpion Ranch! I'm getting a duckling soon, I've searched on what ducklings eat and they say, corn and peas. and scrambled eggs without anything but the egg. Is it right?
All of that is fine for treats, but they'll need a primary food. I use Purina Flock raiser. It's similar to chick starter, but has added niacin for ducklings.

They do a need a source of warmth. An incandescent light bulb would work just fine. A small heating pad would work as well. Monitor their temperature... They need 85-90°F when they are less than a week old, then 5° less every week after that.

No avocado too!
Are you still using Purina Flock Raiser for ducklings or have you found something better?
yes, still using Flock Raiser
Can you use hot water bottles with a heat lap? And the hot water bottles look warm?
They would probably enjoy a hot water bottle. Especially if you put a soft cover on it. They would snuggle right up to it.

Yes they need 80°-85°F at 9 days old. Reduce temps by about 5° each week.

haha! It's an incubator.
What should I feed them
Depends on what is available in your area... Purina Flock Raiser is what I use.
There was one duckling getting flipped over throughout the video
I use yoga mats and hose them down
Can you raise ducks along side chickens?
Yes you can, they generally get along fine. Just make sure drakes aren't mounting your chickens. Ducks have a different anatomy and they can really hurt the chickens.
We have a 8x8 dog kennel for night . Do raccoons dig under the wire? Should we put it on plywood or maybe another section of dog kennel under it.
