Yeah without a doubt. Justin actually uses the correct chords, especially during the 2nd verse. Most people think it’s just power chords the entire song, instead of open chords. This video is by far the best
You are very inspirational. Without your lessons I probably stopped practicing. Now I got my brother also hooked on the guitar. And we are 64 and 63. Thanks for all the lessons and books.
Just yesterday I was talking to one of my friends about the difficulties I have learning this song. Justin came in with the rescue, not even a full day after!
Brilliant advice: “Annoy the neighbours a little bit!” Priceless ... as is the whole lesson. Like many Green Day songs, it’s deceptive but you can make it work at different skills levels, and you show this so very clearly. Cheers!
I've come here wanting to practice my palm muting. I also love this song. I have recently purchased a Gibson Les Paul and a 100 watt amp. I can't wait to annoy my neighbours a little bit. 😆
Justin, not only are your tutorials excellent but you just seem like a really decent human being. It comes across. I'm an American. Sometimes decent people are hard to find over here. But I always keep searching...
I love how even with all the subscribers and lessons, Justin is still humble to say how he is still learning and improving. It gives me hope that I’ll get there one day. I love the app and website, great stuff! Greetings from across the pond!
some people don't even mention the default tuning for that song, that's why i'm back here again, glad to have you as my number one ref, ur the reason i bought a capo
Wicked! Not only do you teach the song, but also share the passion. That's what got me, way into my forties, to take my guitar again after so many years, even decades, of letting it sleep.
So few people play Green Day songs right or claim they just play power chords. You just have to listen and it's clear there's a lot more to it. Thank you Justin for another great lesson. I'm looking forward to more pop punk lessons. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
People tend to think "Aaahhh... it's Punk! That must be easy to play...". And then they try it... 😏 Thanks for analyzing the rhythmic details so thoroughly for us, Justin. Your explanations are very clear. And thanks for not removing the "accent without push" section - it makes the video even more sympathetic. This is another brilliant lesson!
I'd like to say to all learning tunes on you tube, without proper time , you got nothing. This man will give you tools you need to make real music. Timing is everything
for the longest time, i too, cannot do teh accents correctly.. but despite the inaccuracy, it still sounds ok. now i wanna learn the real way to play it and this helped a ton. ty.
Justin you are the best guitar teacher and one of the greatest teachers that are there for me in this world. Thanks for taking the time out for doing this
From one music educator to another, you have been the best guitar instructor on UA-cam and underappreciated since your very first video. (And I have been watching since near the very beginning; nostalgia!) But with these last few videos, you have not only remained the best, but you have turned it up beyond 11! There is something about the longer format, the pacing, the emphasis on under-looked elements of a song and guitar playing in general...something I can't put my finger on...that has made these lessons even higher quality still. I am not sure what is going on behind the scenes, but it's making your instruction even that much better. (Hopefully it's positive things.) Your attention to accurate detail is wonderful. Your ability to apply to beginners and seasoned professionals in the same video is astounding. I know your longer format and extreme detail may not appeal to the "hurry up and play" audience and other UA-cam instructors, but I hope you keep this up. I really like what you did the other day with the "too long; didn't watch" section before getting into more details, as well. I am most appreciative of your attention to strum pattern. So many guitar teachers (especially on UA-cam with multi-million subs) think of strum patterns and right-hand technique in general as an afterthought when really the strum pattern is more important than the notes. I tell my own students that you can have all the wrong notes and sloppy chords, but if you have an accurate strum pattern, then people will still recognize what you are playing (in a casual setting, anyway). I can't wait to see what comes up next. Congrats on almost a million subs, by the way. You have deserved it for a long time now. I can't wait until you get your Play Button. You've already earned it ten-fold. I know this comment is too long for a UA-cam comment, yes I am a very long-time fan, and not to sound like a 12yo (my kids are that age), but I hope you read this. :) Suggestions for songs in this genre? How about Bowling for Soup? "High School Never Ends"; "Ohio"; their cover of "1985"? Even some "Letters to Cleo" covers?
"Stacy's Mom" (original FOW version) would be great, too, as pretty much every UA-cam guitar teacher gets it wrong. I know it's two guitars, but it's pretty easy to combine both guitars into one.
Please more Pop Punk Justin! American Idiot, Welcome to Paradise, She, Father of all, Sugar Youth, Bang Bang, Revolution Radio, Let Yourself Go.. also some of the covers Billie did on his new album would be awesome to teach like Kids in America, A New England, Gimmie Some Truth, I Think We're Alone now, Manic Monday - This lesson inspired me to pickup the guitar after a month away from it.. Thanks!
Yet another excellent lesson. One of my fave songs. Never seen a tab or a lesson using the open chords before. Also the push part makes absolute sense for me. When I play it, sometimes it struggle to stay in time, other times I must (completely accidentally) get the pushes right as it sounds on time. Time to relearn another song. Thanks Justin... you keep me inspired to continue learning.
finally a video, where the accents are "explained". I've seen it multiple times written in tabs but it always appeared so random and counterintuitive to me that i could never get a grip on it. thanks a lot
Wow, just wow. Absolutely brilliant lesson. I have watched quite a few but none come close to this. And then the full play through at the end is absolutely incredible. Thanks for a really really good tutorial Justin.

Justin, your lessons are incredibly majestic my friend and this one is no different. Thank you so very much for going above and beyond in every lesson and sharing it with all of us. God bless!!!
Great lesson, used to kill my wrists playing this in barre chords in standard back in the day! How about some Jimmy Eat World? I used to muddle through Bleed American in the early 00's.
Green Day is one of those bands that when you learn their songs. You really have to feel them not just learn them. When Justin was talking about the pushes that is one part you have to feel. Great video as always Justin!
So funny, I remember watching your original video on this song 6-7 years ago and learning how to play it the way you played it, then I got a Green Day guitar book and I saw how wrong you were playing it! Great to see a new and updated lesson for the first song I ever properly learned and one of the greatest guitar songs of all time! P.s. the first Basket Case lesson was also the first of your vids I saw :) P.p.s. Would love to see you do Fashion Victim!
Luv the pick up configuration on that strat type Justin...please explain...looks like a paf at the bridge with a single coil in the middle and some kinda tv Jones at the neck...madness!
Punk rock especially... is a DIY and rawer style of rock music... it's great you are giving lessons to play it exact to the record for those who want that, but even Billie Joe doesn't always play it exactly the same for the strumming accents or what not

Hey, great lesson. But i have a question. I agree on the pushes. But when it comes to the 1 on c# in the intro for e.g., on the record there seems to be something more than just a change straight to the 1. I wasnt able to get it in detail. Do you hear that too?

I have watched every basket case lesson there is on UA-cam. I can guarantee this is the best one
I think justin guitar cover or lesson is the best among others
Yeah without a doubt. Justin actually uses the correct chords, especially during the 2nd verse. Most people think it’s just power chords the entire song, instead of open chords. This video is by far the best
He's also the only one to get Slow Dancing in a Burning Room correct!

Great to read that, thank you! :)

Just the Kemper and guitar, no pedals or tweaking... well actually there might be a limiter in Logic it goes through too...
