I like Respawn's approach to weapon design. They have a nice balance between making their guns look interesting and fun but they still appear functional.
I think it was a bit of a missed opportunity not to show the R-301 and Longbow alongside the R-99, if only briefly. I think he would have appreciate a sci-fi universe going with a fairly grounded concept of using different configuration kits of the same basic design, like people do with all kinds of takes on the AR-15 IRL.
also kinda missed the C.A.R and the Bocek with shatter caps, wouldve been really itneresting to know an opinion on the "hop up" tech that changes things about the gun, like boosted loader with the hemlok or kinetic feeder on the PK. Im also genuinely surprised they left out the 30-30 since it is one of the most "vintage" guns in the roster. Also, also, i wouldve been intrigued to hear the opinon on the Devo, cause it goes from pop pop to BRRRRRRRR
You know, I think he'd actually did see it. He must have not fought the r-301 or Longbow were really worth noting, but then he saw the r99 and he realized that they were the same platform and then commented on it.
Hey Johnathan! The family resemblance you mentioned in the video is true in more ways than one: the R-99 smg you compared to the hemlok is actually part of the R series, which contains a DMR, the SMG, and three assault rifles designated R-#01. Only one of the assault rifles appears in Apex, but it’s a cool detail on Respawn’s part to have a family of guns similar to all the AR-15 derivatives.
To add on to that, the Hemlok also has it's own family consisting of the Hemlok assault rifle, Volt SMG, and the Devotion LMG. I'm not sure if the last two are actually in Apex, but all 3 appear in Titanfall 2.
An interesting note about the R99 is that (if I remember correctly) its chambered in 5.8 DAP which is the Chinese intermediate cartridge that the QBZ 95 and QBZ 191 are chambered in. So the in game smg is chambered in a real life assault rifle round. Someone can fact check me on that though, I may be wrong.
@@GrumpyMann According to the wiki, the R-97/99 does in fact fire 5.8, but intermediate caliber standards are apparently in the 8mm range by the time TF|2/Apex takes place, so it's an SMG by future standards. The fact that it fires 5.8 is quite interesting, as it implies China is or was incredibly influential (more so than today) at some point in the Titanfall timeline.
Fun fact: This is Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history.
I hope we get the chance to analyze Titanfall weapons, given that Apex is more of an artistic evolution of more grounded designs from the previous games.
@@jonathanferguson1211 It would be great to see an analysis of the Titan Weapons from the TF games, with their intersection of firearm and artillery, and it's always very interesting seeing different approaches to designing weapons for non-human users.
I was glad to hear you pick up on the "family tree" of the arms in the Titanfall universe; I noticed it while playing Titanfall 2. The two standard assault rifles (the R101s), the DMR, and the R-97 sub gun all appear to have similar lineage of design with similarly canted mags and other design commonalities, which I found really interesting that the devs factored in. I know that for the original Titanfall, they tried to lend an aspect of realism to the mechs in the game by modeling some of their components off of existing heavy equipment and tank parts like the driver's hatch of the M1 Abrams, so it's cool to see that continue in TF|2 and Apex
They should show him the C.A.R which somehow has variable ammo types (and can fit an extended heavy mag but use light ammo), and the extended heavy magazine on the wingman.
That was awesome. Would love to see him react to more of the Apex Legends and Titanfall guns. Titanfall 2 has even more wacky ones. In the future if you do more of this you could show him how the Longbow, R99 and R-301 are all made of the same model with a different configuration.
@@rawrdino7046 they are the same platform. It's the same way as the 15 and the 10 are both ArmaLite, and they're the same platform, but they're different and they serve different purposes.
There's quite a few rare reload animations, including one for the G7 where you put the magazine through the top of the gun, and when you're using an ability which requires a hand you chamber the Peacekeeper with the Arnie twirl.
From what i understand from early datamines, the rampage lmg was supposed to be able to give it's bullets the incendiary effect with a thermite. But then they removed it in favor for increased fire rate.
I know Jonathan lurks the early comments. And I wanted to let him know his show makes my Saturdays. Thank you and going to donate to the Royal Armouries Museum.
I personally would have had him look at titanfall (2) weapons. Also, they should have showed him the weapons in the arsenal. I wish he could have given us his opinion on the flatlines original recoil pattern and the alternator as a whole. The one gun I think they did better on in apex is the triple take (in TF|2 it also shoots 3 rounds, but doesn'tsay it), and it's nice he got to see that. Overall, happy we got this much, but would love to see it revisited.
In TF2 it's called the double take because it shoots two shots parallel not three (only two bullet trails and if you go for headshots you can actually miss both shots left and right of the head...) and they should have shown him the three versions of the carbine (101, 201, 301),would be interesting if he thinks that the evolution of the weapon is realistic... Also the devotion, volt and especially L-Star(TF2 version) wich are obviously energy based and have their own little gimmicks, and the sidewinder... I mean it's a rocket launcher LMG hybrid, and the anti titan weapons would be nice to have word on (and maybe even the weaponry of the titans themselves?)
Same, I think they should have gone with TF|2 instead. The flatline was always one of my favorite guns and I'm happy its in Apex but at the same time I'm disappointed it drifts so far from the original rifles recoil pattern.
Only Jonothan can turn Apex weapons into an educational piece that hundreds of thousands of peeps will watch from start to finish. Thank you Jonothan and Happy New Year good sir!
So for the Energy ammo weapons, if im remembering my lore right most are just pretty much electromagnetic propelled flechettes/bullets and the charge up for the Peacekeeper/Triple take act as chokes. And while not seen here the R-99 and Hemlock have families of guns made by the same companies that share basically the same designs but more specialized the R-99 PDW has the C.A.R PDW, the R-301 assault rifle (there are previous iteration in past games, R-101 and R-201) and and D-101 "Longbow" DMR, and the Hemlock has the Devotion and Volt energy weapons made by the same company
I could see the bottom part of the wingman being attached to whatever mechanism holds the cylinder in the gun, so that would make sense as how you actually operate that mechanism, but not spring loaded or however it works in game.

@@empdisaster10 Yes, I absolutely love that it goes so far as to use guns to effectively build a world and establish and reinforce a connective timeline between the games. For instance, the changes in Titan cores implies that over the course of the war, Titan’s became manufactured for specific jobs rather than being an average frame that fits multiple jobs. I can imagine a Titan only warfront that consists of a vanguard of Ronins for Titan combat, a Middle Guard of Legions, and a Rear Guard of Northstars, with a possibility of a separate, anti air unit consisting of Tones, and an infantry extermination unit consisting of Scorches, and a close quarters recon unit consisting of Monarchs, which would have made Expedition units obsolete in favor of Monarch’s adaptability
I try to look at specific design cues rather than just silhouette, as there are always multiple possible inspirations for the latter e.g. CZ Bren 2, B&T AP556, ACR etc. Then again devs will be working from both, so more views are valid than just mine :)
Looking at him react to Apex's guns really makes me wanna see what he would think of Destiny 2's exotic weapons. Amazing and entertaining video as always, keep it up :D
Love love LOVE the series. You guys should get Jonathan to look at some guns from Deep Rock Galactic (my favourite co-op shooter). Ooh finally some weapons with little real world inspiration! I would love to see borderlands 2 weapons and Jonathan react to the massive impossibilities in that game.
I can see using a revolver-type design if want a pistol and your cartridge is too large to fit into a handle. Or maybe if the cylinder itself contains the propellant or other propulsion mechanism, and is manufactured as disposable?
as for the wingman, it used to have up to 12 magazine and also its ammo had a multiplier for headshots meaning they kinda thought of what you said in the vid, but then again, it was too OP and they nerfed it
Nice catch from Jonathan with the mozambique, the clip has 3 holes on it because the gun originally only held 3 shots until they buffed it. I guess they never changed the model
In the Titanfall games it looked basically the same but fired even more shots, so the design is intentional with this one. Although, the description in TF|2 does call it a spread-shot marksman pistol (I think), so maybe the Apex Mozambique is very separate from the other versions.
Or maybe because it is some kind of a battery. In the Titanfall wiki, Mozambique is called as an energy shotgun pistol, it just doesn't shoot blue like other energy weapons. If it is indeed an energy weapon like the wiki says, then the magazine being a battery makes sense. If not, then I don't know.
The name is even a reference to the fact that it has 3 rounds. The "Mozambique drill" is shooting an assaillant twice in the chest and once in the head. (The buff to give it more rounds made the name a bit weird.)
I like how unlike most experts on shows of this nature he doesn't just bash things that are clearly unrealistic he just explains whats off about it and then says "It looks really cool though"
when the expert talks about specific parts of the gun, in game or otherwise, it would be awesome if the item in question could be highlighted or circled as some of us may not know what the expert is referring to without it being pointed out. Great video, great expert, thank you!
I would love to see him react to some of Warframe's weapons, especially the more conventional looking ones like the Braton, Burston, Latron, Lex, Lato, Redeemer and things like that.
I'd also love to see him take a look at Warframe's conventional weapons, but I'd have to admit that I'm also curious about his thoughts on the unconventional as well. Maybe after he's done with the ones you suggested he could take a look at stuff like the Arca Plasmor, Boltor, Phage, Sybaris, and Zenith.
18:46 "You'd better be getting some kind of enhanced power that a self-reloading pistol couldn't handle" Most other weapons that use the same ammo deal only 11 to 19 damage per bullet. The wingman deals 45.
The propellant and case (still has a regular bullet) in titanfall lore and should be the same for apex. Is they’re all batteries which should also mean the guns are rail guns not traditional rifles. There is exceptions for certain weapons like energy weapons; they use energy ammo which would imply just a big battery
there's a wattson voiceline when you ping an extended energy magazine attachment where she says "Like a capacitor, I get that", so yeah it's probably like a battery
What's interesting to note about the flat line that he didn't get to see, is that the reason why it's set up that way is because it has an electronic compensator on it that is meant to cancel out vertical kick. It wasn't used in Apex Legends, but it works and Titanfall 2, and what that does is it makes it where it has no vertical kick whatsoever. This is why it's called the flat line, because the recoil is a flatline.
Planetside 2 has a nice selection of weapons. Ranging from rather conventional through peculiar split cylinder revolvers, oversized shotguns and high tech crossbows to railguns and micro-rocket launchers and pew pew lasers.
I was really hoping that he would cover the sentry. That gun has the fun quirk of not having a feasable way for the ammunition to travel from the magazine to the chamber.
I hope he takes a look at other weapons from the titanfall universe, like the titan weapons and the weapons in the 2 titanfall games that arent in apex. I also love that he noticed the ammunition bar on the sights.
what's cool about the Mozambique is that it's meant to be a nod to the Mozambique Drill where you shoot twice in the upper body of a target and once in the name hence the shape of the bullet mag and spread
i was sitting here thinking you were going to review guns that didn’t exist lol. but i get it, you explain what type of firearms these video game guns are based on.
That en-bloc pistol is reminiscent of the hailstorm system. Multiple caseless rounds are stacked up in a line and the propellant is set off for each projectile in series through electronic ignition.
I'd love to see his take on some of the more bizarre weapons in Black Ops 3 and Black Ops 4. They got some pretty whacky stuff, mainly as DLC but it may not be so easy to get footage
@Jonathan Ferguson thank you, Jonathan, for providing excellent content and analysis as usual! Will you guys cover all the rest of the weapons on part 2? Also, the R99, in my opinion, looks like a distant descendant of the love child from a Vector and UMP.
@@tardigrade2244 Quite possible that they referenced those two designs, yes. Ironically it comes off as a less unusual take on the Vector. As for part 2, I'm not sure what Dave has planned but suspect there will be.

There are a bunch that actually look and work like realistic weapons though, and they have a great customization menu so he can see the weapons really well.
Kinda wish they allowed Jonathan to view the weapon model and rotate it, instead of just showing it used in-round/shooting range with the player model. Sidenote, i like the Filipino aethetic armory emblem which is the Latimosa armory. It was that way because the modeller is a Filipino
I have only played TF|2 but Isn't Lastimosa the guy who dies and gives Cooper BT ? Is the armory just named after him or does his character come from a family of Gunsmiths ? I really want to go back and play TF2 now.
yall should johnathan look at the guns in Fistful of Frags, its a smaller and less known game but there are many guns I havent seen in any other game that are pretty well modeled in my opinion
Revolvers are just the katanas of guns. They're usually immensely powerful in games They're heavily romanticized in media They rely on simple mechanics They're only really popular due to how they're depicted in media
They're both a hold-over from an earlier age where handmade craftsmanship was more common. Though for revolvers their design does still allow for more powerful cartridges than most autoloaders (.44 mag, .454 casull, .500 mag, etc...) which gives them some niche applications even in modern day.
@@bradhaines3142 I avoided that one because inevitably someone will want to argue about .357sig being "similar enough". (Of course there ARE also some rare and impractical. 357mag and .44mag autoloading pistols in existence (Coonan, Desert Eagle, Wildey/Automag) but they tend to be massive, expensive, impractical, and usually have questionable reliability, especially when compared to a revolver using the same round)
I know the R301 is essentially a larger design of the of the R99, but I'd have loved to hear what he had to say about. As it stands he reviewed the Flatty and 99, which makes me happy. Love it man, keep it up.
16:28 for reference the gun initially has 3 shots when the game released but at some point over the last year it was changed to 6 for balancing purposes. Obviously the animations stayed the same.
The Mozambique is one of the weapons that came from Titanfall 2, and it could hold 6-8 rounds. It fires out of all 3 barrels simultaneously, to give it a controlled spread.
I love this series and I love Apex. Before I even saw the video I knew Jonathan was going to laugh at "Revving Up" your Rampage. I was hoping to see his reaction to the Sentinel as well, but that just means I get to look out for part 2 down the line.
I think my favorite videos in this series are of Sci-Fi or other fictional guns, but if we ever get back to games that claim to be historically accurate, I'd love to see a video on Post Scriptum. I'm no firearms expert but the sound and feel of the weapons in that game always stuck out to me as great, though I understand looking at the same "core" batch of WW2 era weapons repeatedly isn't as exciting!
To explain the Mozambique having 3 shells despite firing more than 3 it’s just a factor of the gun was updated to fire more for balance but originally fired 3(also did in titanfall 2)
@@ineedscissors6176 if you like more realistic shooters and have some interest in ww1 i think you would enjoy it. but since i play it on pc im not sure how well that the mechanics would translate to controller.
One of the reasons i enjoy the designs of titanfall is because a lot of it is more grounded. The guns that originate from titanfall all look like realistic steps from modern guns and have realistic properties to them. I never actually noticed the Flatline having nature from the AK series but now that he mentioned it i can. I also appreciate that in lore a lot of the guns are siblings to each other from a select group of gun manufactures like Hammond, Vinson, Lastimosta, and so on, each giving seperate feels and weapons desgins and types, kinda like borderlands. I also enjoy that with each installment in the series they sort of evolve the guns as well. Some stay the same but others are different in the series such as the Double Take in Titanfall becoming the Triple Take, or the R101, R201, and the R301 all being varients of the same gun with the R99 being the Smg varient of the rifles. Its a very unique take on scifi weapons and it makes the world feel more full since theres subtle world building with the weapons. They dont feel alien but they arent exactly the same and i love it
The VK47 is a Reference to the 2013 Movie ''Elysium'' where a AK47 was fitted with Future tech to shoot Airburst-Explosive Bullets. The Future Furniture on the VK looks identical to the one from the movie, but to make it not so obvious the made the AK bullpup!
I can buy that it's a reference of sorts, but I don't see much of a resemblance. The Elysium AK (which I always liked the idea of) has its upgrade package (electronic fusing/electro-optical sighting) as a unitary assembly attached to the gas block of an otherwise unmodified AKM. The furniture is unchanged. The VK47 is a total redesign across the board with completely different receiver architecture and componentry i.e. is not a future upgrade of an AK. It may be, in the minds of the devs, but it doesn't work as one conceptually/design-wise.
I was just looking for this video when I discorveres this series yesterday. I would love to see this and Titanfall 2 revisited with the information about how some weapons are made by the same companies or are based off each other. I'd really love to see what you think about the progression from R101 to R201 to R301, as well as the Havoc and Alternator weapons.
With the triple take, it is essentially a railgun that shoots charged projectiles, and the magazine is two pieces- a set of the physical projectiles, and a battery with enough charge to fire all the projectiles.
i love the fact he doesn't try to bash on games for lack of realism and acknowledges when something is done for gameplay purposes or just rule of cool.
In the Rampage lmg when we inspect we can see a empty barrel. Bullet comes from right goes to left but when we stuck a thermite in it, bullets go through the thermite and heat up. This increases the damage and rate of fire. I can understand damage but rate of fire is a little bit sus
for the energy based weapons like the 3 barreled rifle the triple take the magazine is basically a big battery. the lever action shotgun is also an energy based weapon.
I already had a letter drafted for Jonathan to make this video myself if they didn't get to the Titanfall Universe soon. Today is a really good day.

@@jjtomecek1623 both appear in Apex yes
An interesting note about the R99 is that (if I remember correctly) its chambered in 5.8 DAP which is the Chinese intermediate cartridge that the QBZ 95 and QBZ 191 are chambered in. So the in game smg is chambered in a real life assault rifle round. Someone can fact check me on that though, I may be wrong.
@@GrumpyMann According to the wiki, the R-97/99 does in fact fire 5.8, but intermediate caliber standards are apparently in the 8mm range by the time TF|2/Apex takes place, so it's an SMG by future standards.

C.A.R. is also part of the same family
The original concept designs for the Titans were made from kitbashed models
Unrelated but I never played titanfall 1 or 2 and seeing apex’s direct name callbacks is kinda fun
It's funny you mention that, because they are the same weapons. The Longbow and the 99 are the DMR and PDW variants of the r-301.
They should show him the C.A.R which somehow has variable ammo types (and can fit an extended heavy mag but use light ammo), and the extended heavy magazine on the wingman.
Yeah the C.A.R ammo thing stood out to me immediately lol. That's one place they really just gave up on logic for game mechanics.

The mozambique used to be a 3 shot gun, which explains the 3 shells. Respawn did not adjust the textures when they gave the gun more bullets
I always thought the Hemlock was a blend of SCAR and and HK G36c
I try to look at specific design cues rather than just silhouette, as there are always multiple possible inspirations for the latter e.g. CZ Bren 2, B&T AP556, ACR etc. Then again devs will be working from both, so more views are valid than just mine :)

I can see using a revolver-type design if want a pistol and your cartridge is too large to fit into a handle. Or maybe if the cylinder itself contains the propellant or other propulsion mechanism, and is manufactured as disposable?
There's a skin for the Flatline which literally adds barbed wire to the handle
as for the wingman, it used to have up to 12 magazine and also its ammo had a multiplier for headshots meaning they kinda thought of what you said in the vid, but then again, it was too OP and they nerfed it
Hearing Jonathan talk about bullets going off because they are too hot instantly reminded me of Mythbusters bullets in oven myth.

Also, the bullets are electronically activated.
there's a wattson voiceline when you ping an extended energy magazine attachment where she says "Like a capacitor, I get that", so yeah it's probably like a battery

They're usually immensely powerful in games
They're heavily romanticized in media
They rely on simple mechanics
They're only really popular due to how they're depicted in media

and because of their history
They're both a hold-over from an earlier age where handmade craftsmanship was more common.
Though for revolvers their design does still allow for more powerful cartridges than most autoloaders (.44 mag, .454 casull, .500 mag, etc...) which gives them some niche applications even in modern day.
