I use the oval webasto timer, but not as a timer. If you take the back off and solder to the two pins on the board that connect to the flame (instant heat) button, then connect that up to any kind of relay like a remote control or SMS gate opener (which I use), then you can trigger the FBH remotely.
I use a 12v GSM gate opener from amazon (about £30), made a simple cable with two wires, and now I text our discovery 30 minutes before we want to drive anywhere and never use the timer.
You can also get even cheaper remote keyfobs, but as we park a fair distance from home that'd be no good for us.
Nice and cheap and easy to do! If you search online there's diagrams showing where to solder to.
P.s. love your videos, and only just fixed our FBH watching your other video as a guide :)

I’m a Discovery 3 owner watching this in South Australia where fortunately our winters never get anywhere near as cold as yours thus our car is not fitted with this heating device. Reminds me to never take for granted our relatively mild winters, however the snow and ice seen looks beautiful. A very interesting and informative video and your team work shines through in all your videos, cheers👍🇦🇺

Thanks for the heads up! I will just fix my FBH and leave it alone. We're fortunate to keep the Disco in a warm garage, so it's always warm when we leave the house, but not elsewhere.
Regarding Chinese heaters like the one Grizzly amd Bear use, I have quite a few friends using them, either for roof tents or for inside the cars. While camping last spring, I was sleeping heavily dressed and in 2 sleeping bags, while my friends slept in their shorts, including one in another D3. They seem to be very good.

Thanks Christian and Vera for another great video! I noticed you using the iCarsoft i930 OBD2 in previous ones, and last week I managed to buy a second hand one off eBay. Guess what the first thing I fixed with it was? That's right, the FBH! I found it had logged a fault (probably years ago) and had locked out. It was such a relief to see the clouds of smoke and steam coming from underneath a few minutes later! Having it working really helps the Disco to warm up faster in this current cold snap we're having in the UK.

@@Vera_and_Christian it well turn off after 30 minutes or 75 degree's , which ever comes first even if you get in the car and drive. It doesn't need to be asleep to start it. It uses the follow me home headlight feature, the keyfob LR button has to be set up to turn the headlights on(mine was). Its been cold in the UK for the past 2 weeks and Doris doesn't like it but being able to start the fbh 30 minutes before starting her really helps warms the engine coolant up and the interior fans blow warm air helping defrost

Very interesting video. As about of FBH of my Discovery 3 - it still write a fault code (something as Flame deflector etc) in last 3 years. Times to time I'm erizing it and the heater works some time. Today, after erizing procedure, FBH starting work without any problems in -3*C. The car stays in a garage and I'm using it not every day - so it is not a problem.

Interesting I have been considering getting a similar system for my Defender as in winter I still have to work my anti social shifts leaving home at 4am or other shifts leaving work at 23.00hrs and last year at work it was measuring -16 degrees C for two nights on the trot.
Seams I'd have to be setting my timer all the time to get the best starting conditions for my engine. I have seen one system that uses a phone app that may be simpler to operate as can be set remotely.

The FBH with GSM on my Disco3 heats the cabin. Via the phone I can turn it on and off, set the time, the start and run time for heater and the same for the ventilation. Very handy when it’s -20. The only thing I use the oval timer thing for is to turn the heater off it is still running when I get into the car. Only downside of the FBH is that it locks up if the voltage drops and then you need to reset it by pulling the fuse in a slightly odd procedure.

Hi both, nice intro to what the webasto is. A quick tip: never use the FBH for less than 10 minutes, sooner or later it will be dirt and stop working.
my FBH reset all the faults (except lockdown fault) once the car goes into "deep sleep" mode. Try it. ;-)
The other option is, always turn off the cabin heater before you start the vehicle, this way you also avoid errors like low battery mode. ;-). Then aftee some minutes you turn the heater on again.

Christian, Question: would a Land Rover series 90 or 110 start in these temperatures, or a Discover TDi 200 or 300? All they needed was glow plugs? I don't have the answers but because the series 3 TDi is so lean burn and economical that it needed all this technology to start - remember all those old Mercedes Diesel engines from the 60's in Russia cold starting every day??

Perhaps sorry for the dumb comment, but ignoring any modification you made what was the original functionality intended by LR? Do you set the preheat time inside the car before going to bed? I thought I also saw somewhere this heater fires up when the engine is operating in low load and low temperature conditions? The remote Webasco thingy I guess is all aftermarket?

Dann startet Webasto.

OK Then my Disco 3 is a Unicorn i have fitted the Webasto Watch with the big Remote T100, both trown in the ABS Compartment. You can start the FBH and it will also run the Fan in the Cabin for 30 Minutes.
But to activate it you have to wake the Car up, means you unlock, press the on Button on the T100 and let the Car do its Thing. The Disco will later lock itself and when the 30 Minutes are over you can start the Engine and have a seat in a nice prewarmed Car even at -22 degrees. And most important it throws no fault Codes

@@powervolt748 no nothing needs soldering on a D4 fbh or d3, the pcb board is we’re the 3 plugs plug into the fbh (same as d3 one), remove fbh strip down very easy then pop the cover off we’re the 3 plugs plug into the unit you will see 4 screws undo them remove slowly and the pcb board lifts out. Do the same on a d3 fbh and put the d3 pcb board into the D4 fbh one re assemble then put the D4 fbh into the d3. I got a remote for the fbh as well running off the 3rd button on the key and all works well. Just put the d3 pcb into the D4 fbh and re fit that’s it very easy.

The factory CAN-bus heaters are kinda junk IMO. I have 2014 Sprinter which has factory installed double Eberspächer heaters. In my opinion they're kinda useless if you want to preheat the car because they have limited running time and limited start counter. So if it's only a little freezing, the heater can be started only 6 times and 20min per time. Then you have to drive the car at least 15 or 20 minutes and then the counter will reset. IF i sometime drive it only short distances the counter won't reset and now you can't preheat the car.
I live in Finland so it gets really cold in winter here. -20-30C. I solved the problem by installing universal Webasto Thermotop Evo heater. It runs as long as i want and as many times as needed. Of course i have external charger installed also so the battery won't drain too much.

the fault your having is because you need a new glow plug! this is what we do, replace the burner with a new plug and it will check the plug and heat your engine. this happens when the plug is getting to the end of its life, a new plug ohms is 0.25 and an old plug is 0.4 ohms. ant higher and the webasto will stop altogether. sounds like your "nursing it" through. new plug and burner

Many small diesels have an aux Webasto or a Eberspächer purely to heat the engine, but not normally to actually heat the engine before start, that is an option. No it’s there because diesels with EGR don’t produce enough heat at low load to maintain normal operating temp during winter, my VW camper has and only operates when the engine is running if ambient is 4c or less and coolant below 70c.
EGR is to reduce combustion temp to reduce NOX and it works too well at low load, problem is most EGR systems are not working at optimal due to blockage making emissions even worse, my Eberspächer is not working which is normal as around town & short journeys it’s on/off on/off so the glow pin has a short life. My EGR is cleaned blanked & programed out & fuel economy improved by 20% a good auto engineer will admit if pressed EGR works on emission testing but not so good in real life.
