  • Simplified is a new series on PowerDrift that aims to make automotive concepts, technology and ideas as easy to understand as possible. These short videos take the questions you have and clear the air around the what, how, why and when. This time, we're talking about engine oil. They all look the same, but they all do not work the same! It's important to read the specification of the oil and make sure it's right for your machine! Shumi breaks it down for you.

      Every other bike review I watch they go on talking about "fueling", like how it is good on this engine or its bad & bla bla bla... I don't understand a bit.
      All I know is for most efficiency engine should run on stoichiometric ratio of air to fuel (14.7:1).
      So, what exactly is bad fueling?? Is it the engine is running lean or rich?
      I believe the factory settings would be perfect as no manufacturer will get it wrong since they do so much R&D.
      Please educate me.😅

    • @shu_mar
      @shu_mar 3 роки тому +2

      @@chinmayanand1960 idea noted! The short version is that 14.7:1 is the ideal ratio and engines try to stick close but don’t always. Economy, performance and emissions requirements influence the actual mixture selection.

      Read about internal combustion engines, it will give you all the answers you need because it's more than just the configuration of the piston and cylinder, you have to take into account all the moving parts from the crankshaft to the time and area of opening of the intake valve and exhaust valve. It'll probably take power drift more than one episode to explain the above in detail!

    Great series and a good video, although I disagree on some points about oil grade.
    I tend to run a slightly thicker oil than recommended if you don’t have variable lift valves or hydraulically actuated injector pumps. Generally thin oil is specified to meet emission & fuel economy numbers, and I’ve seen same models recommended different oils in different countries with the same climate - eg. Nissan Navara in Australia vs NZ.
    Also thin oil circulates quicker at cold starts and purges cam phasers, turbo lube, etc. If you let your engine warm up for 30 seconds before you move and get to operating temperature before you trash it (like you should), you’ll get away with using a slightly more viscous oil which will lubricant better.

    Do we need to strictly adhere to time-based oil change intervals as opposed to distance based ones? If for example one of my motorcycles (or for that matter cars) has not run much in a year, due to say, work from home for over a year, do I really need to change the oil? Does oil "go bad" over time while sitting inside the oil sump, unused? Of course the service center pushes for timely service, coz they want their revenues flowing. What does the data say though? If the oil on the dipstick looks and feels okay, it should be okay, right? Or am I missing something?
    Would love to see you answer this in one of your future videos.
    Absolutely love your work. Cheers!

    Just get whatever is written on the manual. The brand of the oil really doesn't matter.
    If you are going to beat the thing on the racetrack all the time in the summer then obviously you'll have to use a different grade.

    Slipper clutch & quick shifter as a topic. I see these two specs percolating to mass motorbikes.
