PD Simplified : Rev Matching Explained | How To Do It
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 лют 2022
- Rev matching is a super cool technique to help your motorcycle's engine deal with the strain of downshifting. Also called Blipshifting, it is bringing up engine revs before a downshift. 1. It can help prevent rear-wheel lockup, and the loss of control because of it. 2. The motorcycle sounds cooler when you do it right. In this Simplified, Shumi explains rev-matching and how to do it properly.

Hey #PDArmy, we hope this helped you understand rev-matching. Hit that Like button if you wanna see more like this, and Share it with a friend, or two, who need to know about this.
Explanation is detailed but the activty seems difficult.
Thank you sir but I have been doing this from the day I brought my first bike
Sir, i want to buy a bike with 300cc or above engine, with upright stance so that i can cruise easily, there should be minimum vibrations for comfort and average should also be decent.
Please help me with it. It would be really nice of you.

you can rev match clutchless downshift too just make sure bike isn't yours.
Is there a draw back for doing this? Cause I did this on the harley and it sometimes struggles to start up
😂😂
Doing both clutchless up & down shifts on my bike for a year now I'm having noo problems (picked this idea from dirt bikers they do this all the time)
True 😂😂, and make sure you don't meet then again cause they gon make you buy another clutch plate
Nah mate, "Make sure bike is yours" otherwise ur friend will think twice before giving u his bike.
Even though revmatching has become second nature for me, I still find it difficult to quickly (in 2s) downshift from 6th to 2nd when I suddenly spot an unmarked speed breaker, for instance. Successive smooth and quick downshifts is an art that every motorcyclist needs to master.
I'd suggest you find a spot somewhere you could catch some speed say 50 to 60 kmph
And practice your emergency braking skills
With the downshifts
If you practice you will be better in those but clinching moments
Finally!! A good explanation and representation especially the blip sound lol. Hands down man!
5:28 😂
I used to apply the similar technique while rev matching (half clutch + blip) except the usage of breaks on both 2 & 4 wheelers. I will revisit this video once again for understanding the importance of breaks. Thank you for the info.
Now my next practice lesson will be flipping on my meteor, last time I have tried holding the Tank of my bike with thighs, it completely changed the riding experience and handling after watching that simplified video.
great videos !!
Question for a future episode : difference b/w 2 shocks or a monoshocks at the rear ,and how does the manufacturer choose b/w the 2
@PowerDrift waiting for this
Mono shock gives better handling and performance because dual shock has two shocks, so if one of them is bad, it’s a problem. But, dual shock handles bumps better and can take more load than mono-shock.
And yeah, mono shock is more expensive to manufacture. This is why you’ll always see dual-shock on cheaper bikes.
So, for the budget/cheaper bikes, manufacturers use dual shock to cut costs.
@@roshanthapa25 i dont think that dual shocks can take more weight than a monoshock. monoshocks are bigger and have alot more travel than dual shocks
@@TheMalangMan your logic is right... but have you not seen how much weight they carry on small 100-100CC bikes in the villages, lol ?
I thought the Indian automotive channel will never put informative videos like those done by the foreign auto channel. But PD and Shumi proved me wrong.
Not many videos out there explaining rev matching this well. This is a great video!
Another technique to learn, added to the list. Thank You Professor Shumi! 😁
A video of Shumi rev matching on a motorcycle would have been the cherry on top. 🍒
He can't do it
@@echochamber8350sure, kid 🤣
Great video. I enjoyed watching. Thanks for this guys.
One small request. It would be really amazing if this can be shown in action by mounting cameras pointing to all the activities we should do while Rev Matching.
The action of blip throttling is significantly tougher in a long stroke engine lke the Classics or CB350, where u have to rev the accelerator really long as the strokes are long ...
In CB350 due to presence of slipper clutch, it can be done easily. I've been always doing it to reduce speeds or brake, atleast for last 6k kms ever since I learnt it
One question though, I find engine braking remains very effective at higher RPMs. In case of CB due to its taller gearing, I often find myself in 4/5th gear and as I approach a speed braker, I'd have to get into 2nd. If I downshift sequential, It takes more time to brake but if I come directly to 2nd, I get very effective engine braking. I don't get to know as long stroke don't come with RPM metre. Which of the above is recommended?
Omg this is the video Ive been searching for! Thank you for the visual explanation and really breaking down the WHY! Awesome video man
By far the clearest and most concise yet easy to understand explanantion I’ve heard! Thanks for the great presentation
Very well explained yet again! loving this simplified series :) Ride safe and Ride hard!
I've been doing this on my rtr 200 despite having a slipper clutch. I've researched on this topic to a certain degree and I've been told SC is an aid rather than a replacement. I also want to develop my skills so I keep doing it. I'd like to hear more opinions on this.
My R15M has a slipper clutch and I believe it definitely helps in both high rpm and low rpm downshifts. High rpm downshift is smoother with a throttle blips but for most of my below 3000 rpm downshifts I'd just downshift and let the clutch out smoothly and the gearbox works just as smoothly. Agressive throttle blips in low rpm, high gear downshift ( say from 5th to 4th) are just annoying in my opinion, I just don't see the need.

ok q
@@rommelsailo Yeah I can relate to this. I also don't rev match when revs are already low. The technique is helpful when riding quick
@@venukrithish007 Dual ABS and slipper clutch/assist are great features to have in any motorcycle. Glad my R15 has the most crucial tech/riding aids which give me some peace of mind when riding at a higher pace in the mountain roads.
If you could make a video demonstrating this whole thing it would be easier for folks to understand!
I had watched multiple videos at first about these bit wasn't getting in my puny head😂
But yes
When you're on the bike it's much easier to show
Also the feeling of rev matching when you go into a corner amaze!!!
From my understanding of this video the sequence is brake, half clutch, blip, downshift, dump clutch when the revs almost reach where its supposed to be in that gear
Use the back break if you can to simplify the right hand
Thanks for sharing the simplified video on rev matching. Personally have been doing this since a long time and certainly it does help a lot. Once again thanks for sharing and videos like these do really help. :)
Been doing this from a long time but never thought about it so scientific way... Thanks Shumi..!! ❤️
Beautiful explanation Shumi. Wanted to explain this to my brother but couldn't since i don't know the technical terms. This is not an easy concept to explain, but you have done it marvellously 😊. Imma share this like mad❤
Great explanation, as always..thanks Powerdrift and Shumi!
Good one shumi!
When we pick up motorcycling with 2stroke, autoblippr comes out of the box .
I'm thankful to you for this new thoughts that really we don't know in 8year bike ride experience.
Really well laid out explanation professor Shumi! 🙌
Finally understood what it is , watched 2-3 videos on the topic before but didn't got much so learned nothing , now need to find an empty road to prac this few times
Say , for revmatching, I use the rear brake only while rev matching? Would that be okay? braking the front and blipping is a little complicated for me. Although I do not own a high cc bike, I would like to gradually learn this technique
Finally, an easy to understand video of rev matching
The very thing I wanted explained, explained very well, thank you very much.
Finally! Thanks Shumi, been waiting for this since some time!
This is where DROP A GEAR AND DISAPPEAR comes from!
Been doing rev matching on my Apache 180 since 5-6 years and yea it just simply changes the whole Riding experience!
More control, More Fun, Better Ride quality because of the lack of lunges and Jerks in the momentum, Ability to instantly accelerate and more.
So well explained. Thanks, Shumi! Quick question or open for comments. There's a school of thought that rev matching is only used at high speeds, and especially on the track. My question is there any truth to that or is it advisable to blip in regular city riding too (keeping aside the 'it's good practice' sentiment that I share, too)?
Awesome video again! I got here after watching the quick shifter and autoblipper video. Had a question on why it doesn’t surge when you blip and I think this is being explained around the 5:50 mark. But here’s another question. If we are rev matching to 5,000 manually blipping, and in this example it goes to 6,000 rpm, and the clutch gets released around 5,000 rpm for that rev match, how does an autoblipper match it perfectly to the correct revs? My understanding of an autoblipper is that the throttle remains completely closed, you are on the brakes and all you do is click down gears and it’ll match revs for you, without physically pulling in thr clutch lever and then releasing it when the revs match.
Hi Shumi, absolutely loved your video ❤️. I have tried rev matching on my KTM RC 200 NEW MODEL 2022 and it worked fantastically. I am frequently getting now "ABS FAILURE" error on display screen upon doing rev matching. Unable to figure out. KTM mechanics suggesting to change front wheel ABS ring. I just bought the bike 3 months back. Pls suggest me on this.
i did not even know what re matching was before this.. but doing this since years. also is heel toe shifting in cars for the same cause ??
Thanks for the video. Question. Do I need to use front brake when blipping the throttle. It sort of makes sense to be slowing the rear wheel whilst raising the engine rpms, but will blipping the throttle alone be sufficient.
I was long waiting for this episode... Thank-you Shumi...
In CB350 due to presence of slipper clutch, it can be done easily. I've been always doing it to reduce speeds or brake, atleast for last 6k kms ever since I learnt it

Got a good idea about how to use revmatching..and does that work even in a 125cc old 2v engine bike with 4speed gearbox
Is this applicable to short stroke and long stroke (high-revving and low-revving) engines the same? I have an RE 350.
i have been heel and toe shifting on the public roads for the last 3 years , so that i can do it easily on the race track !
Learning a lot from these videos. Practicing too. Have you guys made a video on panic braking or what to do under accidental conditions?
I’m loving this !! These are definitely the questions we all skipped during our study and it appeared in our exams 😅 and then we said “ Wish I’d studied this”
Thanks PowerDrift.
Awesome video! Thanks!!
Nicely explained, the next part is practice on actual driving.
Thanks and more Power man!
But shumi there is also a downside blipping throttle for every downshifts can increase the fuel consumption right? Also why did you tell us to disengage clutch partially in the time of blipping? It's always better to disengage clutch fully no ?
I have a Doubt .After rev to higher rpm, whether we should downshift the gear after releasing the throttle?? Or before releasing the throttle???
Does it apply to car's? I don't do in cars, but in my bike i do it regularly bcoz when u downshift the gear without it it makes bad sounds..but when I rev it it is jusy so smooth..I wonder how car mechanism apply..
Just when I thought to put a question on slipper clutch....you already answered it 😁 👍🏼
Hiiiii PowerDrift......
Appreciate your efforts!!!!!!!
🏍️💥🏍️
Thanks for making this video upon my request🤩
Nicely explained Shumi! 👍🏼
Yup, simple and yet brilliant explanation. I'd like to mention that while blipping to downshift does sound cool, even cooler is stopping much sooner than when you apply only your brakes. People need to be familiar with engine braking as well.
Any motor cycle riding workshop you can suggest?
Amazing explanation Schumi...
Shumi sir really simplified every concept related to bike. Greatest teacher 🙏
Thanks for the sequence.,. Nobody explained that way
I think rev matching is very useful in situation like you are hovering around 50kmph in 5th gear, and now you want to get a quick overtake in 3rd or even 2nd gear! Then the throttle blipping comes into the picture. To come for a complete hault, I downshift my gears around 3-4k rpm where engine manages the high downshift revs easily without blipping a throttle!!
By the way, nice content Shumi...
@Chethan never bro...I always use sequential downshifts.
Damn PD you read my mind 👀
Thanks for this one 💯
Thank you ❤️ this video helped me 👍
Doesn't this cause the clutch plate both dry as well as wet clutch plate to get damaged? Also how will I know if I am performing the procedure correctly?
Would it apply the same in cars too? Half clutch can b done 🤔
Even if i have slipper clutch... If i don't rev-match and downshift.. the gear box will make a painfull cranky sound ..... My question is .... Is this safe for gear box?.. coz it does not sound safe..when it is done the above mentioned way
Been waiting for this! Gracias!
Theory was really good..but was waiting for practical application by Shumi...in save Video.
Can we actually blip shift on a royal Enfield ?
My friend had a Himalayan and when I tried blip shifting I didn't get a good feeling
But I never tried it on j series engines though
Have been doin it unknowingly, but makes sense now
i am very glad,,, all my friends say Bliping is unnecessary and not good. I may not be a pro, but i am learning to perfect it. I feel more safer and confident doing so before gear down. yeah also slipper clutch in my rr310 is not as good i think it should be.
Come visit mizoram during March.. there is going to be a MIMSA race during the month 🙏🙏
Does this make sense to try on long stroke engines like RE?
I finally understand thank you so much...loved the video
I love rev matching. I just love rev matching. Whenever I'm coming to a stop I rev match. I turn off quickshifter because I like to do as much as I can do on a motorcycle, makes me feel more connected to my motorcycle. I'm the vroom vroom guy in the group who sounds the coolest when coming to a stop🤣😅. It was little tricky to learn and to maintain break pressure and doing the blip at the same time, took me time to learn and now it's muscle memory. People hate me because they think I'm showing off but sounds so nice, it's worth pissing off those idiots.
Is this same process for cars as well
I learnt about this last year. Eager me wanted to try this my humble unicorn just out of curiosity, and tried to blip when coming to a stop at a signal. Girls opposite to me stared at me like i was doing a crime on street. I learnt my lesson, always wear a dark helmet to save embarrassment.
I do it since ages in motorcycle and exactly matches whatever you described in the video but i struggle to do the same when driving cars .
Superb explanation extremely helpful to new riders @shumi thankyou 👍🏻💯🙌🏻
Sir same apply to car also ..? What the process of it . If it’s manual ,,,!!!
Hi,
Can rev matching be done on low cc motorcycles 🏍?
I've been doing this for years without knowing the fundamentals much. It got rid of sudden jerk while downshifting. The way my bike communicates and tells me how she feels better when I do it, I know It was the right thing. Only now I know why.
Hey there! My owners manual of BS6 RTR 160 4V Says to change the engine oil every 6k kms but my bike hardly reaches 3k kms in a year, so how often should i change my engine oil as few say 3 mo, 6mo and some say a year or should I change as recommended i.e 6 k kms irrespective of the time, please bust this myth and explain as to what is beneficial
Amazing explanation. Thanks a lot !
Do we need to do this on a car?
And can we drop from 4th to 2nd on a car?
Please make video about battery, mainly because of the additional GPS tracker are installed on the bike get battery drain very quickly, and it is horrible if we don't have a kicker. I have R15 V4 thinking about to install GPS...
what if i pull the clutch lever fully in every downshift then do i have to rev match?
is rev matching required for a cruiser bike? i have a honda hness cb350
Thank you so much shumi!
What we need now is practice! Exciting!
Hello sir , i liked your video.. content is very rare . No one will explain like this , really hat's off to you .
My question is can we use this rev matching to control the bike , when we need to apply the breaks suddenly or need to lower the speed suddenly ...? Because we can't control it only applying breaking ..
Some of friends who are motocross riders they will do the same on normal road also ..
Does it affect engin .. ?
finally got the one explanation that I asked for
Beautifully explained
Awesome... Thank you so much...
So doesn't applying break work to calibrate engine revolution and motion?
Is high revving bad ?
I use r15v3 , please do make a video on this
Doesn't Rev matching contradict engine braking where you just let go of accelerator?
Professor Shumi.. . Thank you again
Finalyyyyyyyyyy
Thanks a lot shumi baba
Sometime it's nice to downshift without blipping, you will break faster, you will change the attitude of the bike very fast and sharp turn with a bit of a "power-drift".... Not advisable for beginers, and you can lock up most slipper-clutches if you are hooliganing around or on the race track ....but if you are intent in using engine brake as an alternative to braking sometimes blipping is counter-productive. But blipping is a good technique for beginers so they will use the tools of the trade, now I ride without even thinking of blipping on the road.
Can you please throw some light upon blinkers, high & low beam
Or
Carburettor vs fuel injector?
How does a slipper clutch effect this action?
About 4 yrs ago, my HD STREET 750 faced a clutch burnout at 12000kms & I was told by the chapter mechanic that it occured due to improper use of the clutch. It costed me a bomb to get a new clutch plate replacement. Can u please explain what does IMPROPER USE OF CLUTCH mean? Does rev matching cause clutch plate to get damaged? Please make a video on this
very well explained
