    "A good shirt should last a decade." That's a classic.

  • @jpdj2715

    Different yarns (different fibers - cotton, linen, etc.) have different prices, depending on the qualities of the yarn. Then the weave will determine the price of the cloth. Differently colored yarns can give a pattern (more expensive) or a pattern can be printed on a white cloth (cheaper). At 2:37, you look at the inside of a shirt's shoulder where the sleeve is set into the body. The double (parallel) stitch in this example does not really look sophisticated, but that can be the lack of resolution. It is as if we look at the scissor cut edge of the cloth exposed. A quality shirt would have a double stitch that hides the cut off edge of the cloth so the weave does not fall apart there. The example looks machine-stitched, not hand stitched. Another aspect of price can be the cloth has been treated so you do not have to iron the shirt, or it repels staining fluids.

    Antonio, this is another great video. I'm Japanese and I love shirts that are well made. Lately when I get a shirt I usually go for a brand that has a right fit for me over quality since I'm only 5'5, slim with short limbs. I agree that brands that have great history are still here for a reason. I would also like to see new brands that produce great products to be around for a long time.

    I would highly recommend Charles Tyrwhitt (don't know if it's available outside the UK). Very high quality and they are willing to spend a good amount of time at the store making sure you get exactly what you want and the right fit. You can also customise it with a monogram etc if you want.
    Additionally they have a fantastic return policy including a 6 month money back guarantee if you're not satisfied. They almost always have a 4 for £100 deal so I think it's great value also.

      +LM1990 have to disagree.
      IMO I admit TM lewin used to make great shirts. Really good fabric, good construction, good price. However since I went back to London this past June the cloth quality has dramatically gone down hill. For the price they are still a good deal and offer a fantastic range of fits, collar widths and sleeve lengths, but there are much better deals if you shop around.
      I personally can't rate this Australian brand named SABA well enough. Great cloth, and although at full price they are too expensive (200AUD), they often do 2 shirts for 200 AUD promotion which makes them a great bargain. Modern slim fits, italian fabrics, quality buttons and construction. worth checking out next time you need a shirt.

      I agree, Charles Tyrwhitt do fantastic dress shirts. I own around 16. The quality fabrics used make them long lasting. Check out their store in Bicester Village, sometimes they have the £60 shirts on for around £18 :)

    Hey Antonio, I have bought a large number of shirts in the AU$300-$400. I have also bought much cheaper shirts. The result? Every one of my expensive shirts which are now 13-14 years old, still look wonderful, feel wonderful, still look modern and beautifully styled. Makes for a cheap shirt. Cheaper ones? Well what can I say? Lucky to get 12months to 2 years.

    Antonio, my compliments (again) to this very informative video to those who are new to the subject. Personally, the fabric of the shirt also says a lot to me. A shirt from, let's say Monti is relatively/a lot less luxurious than a shirt woven by Kiton for example. You can actually feel the difference just by gently rubbing it between your fingers. It's kinda obvious but that's why I think it's a very good way to notice differences between shirts.
    Also Antonio, I know you're a very busy man and this is just an idea, but I think this would be an excellent topic to make a set of videos from. How to notice High Quality knitwear, shoes, fur, scarves, gloves, face lotions etc. etc. Just an idea!! I'd love to see a video about cashmere knitwear!

    Thanks for the informative video, Antonio! I just had a shirt tailored so this video couldn't come at a more perfect time. In my opinion, you should have started with brand first, because there are brands that have lasted for ages that are now starting to scrimp on quality. Hence it would be better to start with a good brand and then look further. My 2 cents.

    I always have to have my dress shirts tailor made (bespoke) otherwise they don't fit. I have wide shoulders, V- taper back, slim waist, reasonably thick arms so a normal shirt (just like a suit) I just can not wear and is a sure waste of money.
    Yes you pay a lot more than normal, but for me at least, it is well worth the investment (130-140 euros). And you can have any style, any fabric, any type of buttons, any colour, any type of stitching. Anything you can think of and best of all, it fits me exactly right.

    First thing to do is hold the shirt up to the light and inspect the actual weaving of the material . If light shines thru it like a piece of cheese cloth and it's uneven put it down and walk away . Pinpoint oxford shirts are a good place to start when looking for quality shirts . You'd be surprised how many people don't even know the word or what it means .

    Antonio, how do you like Charles Tyrwhitt shirts? You can pick these up for $40 or $50 each, often in Egyptian cotton and the attention to detail and the quality overall is, in my mind, unrivaled. For example, Brooks Brothers use plastic collar stays, Calvin Klein uses a plain metal stay, Charles Tyrwhitt use a brass stay that's branded, it's look better and it adds to the overall experience. I've found you can pay less than the price of a shirt from express (that lasts three washes) and get significantly better quality than Brooks Brothers or Calvin Klein that charger significantly more. Additionally, their customer service is the best I have experience in any any business any time in my life. I have no affiliation with the company but have been so consistently impressed I can't help but share how awesome they are. Have you come across them? Any opinion on other brands that offer superior quality for a reasonable price?

    • @TheyRiseBand
      @TheyRiseBand 9 років тому +1

      CT makes a decent shirt for the money. Or, I should say, CT has a decent shirt made for them, for the money. I just bought 5 for under $250. It can be a good value, IF you buy during one of their better perma-sales, with additional discount code (Use: RMNN12 for an additional 12% off and free shipping).
      Like many low to middle-end men's clothing retailers (Mens Wearhouse, Jos. A. Bank, Brooks Brothers, etc.), CT uses a high MSRP, high discount business model. The high MSRP gives an aire of exclusivity, while not providing any actual value. The "discounts" from this business model make it seem like a good deal, while it is only fairly priced (again, only if you use additional discount codes).
      Though CT tries their hardest to infuse a sense of British-ness to their products, most of it is made in Peru, Turkey, China, or former Eastern Bloc countries. Only a few select products, like their handmade line of ties and some of the outerwear garments, are actually made in England or Italy.
      If in United States, expect to wait 2 weeks; your package will come across the pond via Royal Mail, with USPS delivering after Customs destroys your box. Not to fear, CT ships with a pretty sturdy box.
      All I am saying is, know what you are buying and run the numbers for yourself, to determine if it is a good value. For me, a man who likes to look sharp without breaking the bank, CT provides a decent value, even with the cheesy British marketing gimmicks and "specials". I'd steer clear of their shoes; stick to the shirts and ties. I have a suit on the way and will let you guys know how that turns out.

    I'm at a technical college and learning to be an electrician. I bought a coverall button down shirt that's good quality of course because of the environment I work in. My instructor teased me saying "where's your beer belly to fill in that shirt!". The shirt fits perfectly in arm length and shoulders, but I'm somewhat of a fit body type and most cover all shirts are extremely loose in the stomach (I have a 40 inch chest and 34 inch waist) . Is it worth tailoring that area?? And I hope a tailor doesn't look down on me that it's literally a blue collar work shirt and not a dress shirt.

    Great video; really nice to understand what to look for in regards of quality.
    Question: I run my own business, and I mostly dress "internet millionaire"(but not there yet) casual with jeans, shoes, striped long sleeve shirts, and a sports jacket. My wife asked me to change my style to a more formal for work days due to some new business opportunities I'm getting into, but I don't know where to start. Do you have any video about switching styles from casual to formal? Will any of the striped shirts work out with formal pants or will I have to get a whole new wardrobe?
    Thanks again Antonio, it's good to have someone to go for this questions; have a good day!

    Hi Antonio, a great video in essence. My "problem" with it is that the quality shirts you talk about, for $200+ may not be the best out there. As a tailor, you know that most fabrics on cheap garments from the rack are, well cheap. At that price, why not go bespoke because it is about $250 a shirt with the best fabrics in the world.
    If people cannot go bespoke, I would not spend over $100 a shirt. I went from Banana Republic to Tom Ford to find out that most companies just screw us over with the brand... Better see my tailor for that. Pants, shirts, suits, jackets. A lot simpler. LOL

      Wong Dickson why not just steal from brooksbrothers directly? The shirts will be new. Just try on your dads at home first so you dont steal the wrong size. That would be embarrassing. Also, Id recommend stealing nice poplin or chambray shirts as they are lighter, allowing you to run faster from the store

    I've seen lot of info on RMRS website about custom shirts and clothing in general, but I just moved and have trouble finding a good tailor in my area. Lot of them do alterations, but no custom clothing. Are there any tips for finding one? What to look for to get good first impression about the quality of the work without having something made to find that it's no good?
    Another thing that caught me last month was buying of the rack shirt. I was on my way to a business meeting and got my shirt stained, so I popped to a shop and bought new shirt. Problem I had then was poor fit. If I pick a collar size, slim fit shirts are too baggy for me. Is there anything that could be done on a short notice to make the shirt presentable? Other than pinning at the back and keeping the suit on?

    I went to a Goodwill recently and found a Brooks Brothers shirt for $3. It's a little big on me but not too much. There are no visible flaws that I can see. My question is is it worth getting alterations for the shirt? I'm only in college and work as a lifeguard. Would it be worth it?

    I have one question: are you supposed to take off your shirt without undoing buttons on cuffs? And if you can do that is that mean that your shirt is too big?

    • @RealMenRealStyle
      @RealMenRealStyle  9 років тому

      No - technically the cuffs should fit tighter so you can't. However some men have small hands and this rule doesn't apply. In any case buttons can be EASILY adjusted.

    What is the best material for Collar Stays?

    • @RealMenRealStyle
      @RealMenRealStyle  9 років тому

      shivam yadav Stainless steel is the most popular metal for collar stays. Heavy and stiff, these collar stays will do their intended job. You can be sure that your dress shirt collar will lay correctly and look crisp. If you purchase stainless steel collar stays, some manufacturers give an option to personalize the metal collar stays.
