    Greetings from America. Thank you so much for sharing your gift. I really enjoy watching you paint and share your techniques. I’m completely new to art. I don’t have stable hands to do real canvas. I use digital, which isn’t as difficult but I miss the texture of real canvas. I do love your art. It is so beautiful. 😊

    Paul, you did all of those planes? That's amazing! I love the old military paintings like that. My husband has a poster of St. Mary's Lighthouse in the northern part of England and I think Whitley Bay in 1930's prints. He and his family would spend summers in that area. Thanks for a throwback to the railway prints of that time.

    I am so excited after watching you paint in gouache, and the different techniques you’ve shown, that I now want to try my hand at it. I had no idea that gouache came in such a variety of colours. I thought gouache was white only. This is the first time I’ve ever seen it demonstrated in all the years I’ve been watching painting videos. I’m not as talented an artist such as yourself, but I am trying .
    I hope to begin painting again after such a long hiatus, so I will be ordering gouache paints very soon. Thank you so very much for giving me the desire to paint once again, I can hardly wait!

    I have a cheap set of gouache (no name brand) that I purchased probably a year ago. I've only played with them twice but was actually pleasantly surprised. I've been rather unproductive for a while now and I think it might ease me back into getting creative. Also, thinking that these paints might be a great option for plein air painting --- very versatile and forgiving. As always, I love your channel.

    I've heard youtube creators say that gouache is not like watercolour, they believed in this heartily, and that they can't be used as watercolour so ever since then I was unsure and a little bit scared to use them like that but in the video they seem to work exactly like watercolours. Mine become streaky and dont flow as much as yours do in the video, maybe I'm doing something wrong... but I will definitely try again with these lovely tutorials!

    This was wonderful, and I am definitely going to bust out my gouache paint and try it again. My question for you is of course gouache is great when you use it fresh and wet out of the tube. However, once it dries in your palette, what do you recommend to get it back to that creamy consistency? I have found if I keep gouache paint in a pallet for a while, the pieces just fall out in chunks. Do you ever use the dry gouache without topping it with fresh gouache? Thank you for your wonderful videos!

    • @bonnieodonnell2780
      @bonnieodonnell2780 Рік тому

      I heard him say that you can rewet the qouache. I’m not sure if he meant in the palette or on the paper or both. I haven’t used it myself. Looks like fun though. Have you tried adding water to your qouache in your palette?

    • @EkaterinaKokurina
      @EkaterinaKokurina Рік тому +1

      You can rewet these chunks of dried gouache, try to pour some water on them and mix after 5-10 minutes. You can even put them in some container. But if your paint is too chalky, it means it is not a good quality. I had several large 100 ml cans of gouache dried half full. I just poured some water inside, left them overnight to soak and them mixet the paint with a stick. It usually works well with gouache.

    • @kazfarndon4990
      @kazfarndon4990 Рік тому +2

      I keep mine in a sealable deep well pallet, closed when not in use. This keeps them in a good moist consistency with an occasional spritz..I didn't open for about a month one time and most were still moist.Check out Sarah Burns Studio on utube. She has links to her supplies including the pallette I have. I did try the shallower mijello sealable pallette when I started but they dried out in that

    Hi. When use white gouache straight from the tube it feels like painting with concrete but if I water it down a bit (I usually do this for highlights) it tends to dry the grey/bluey colour and I have to go over twice. Any ideas how to keep white? I use W&N white gouache at the moment. I have heard people using a 'bleed proof white'. Is this better than gouache? Thankyou

    • @ArtbyPaulClark

    a) Why the brown undercoating in the 2nd example? Seems like it's completely overpainted, so couldn't you skip it?
    b) Very interesting comparison of painting styles. The 1st example seems to imply that you don't need watercolour at all because you could paint in that style with gouache just the same - which isn't the case, I guess? Probably this nice glowing feel as if the painting is illuminated from behind the paper can't be achieved with gouache? Maybe it would also be interesting to have a direct comparison between watercolour and gouache?
    Great video - as always 😊 👍

      You can skip the brown underpainting, but personally I use it as a mid value guide to the subsequent layers added..whether they need to be lighter or darker. I also like to give a painting a particular temperature undertone to unite the whole mood of the painting together, so the initial colour chosen varies

    Perfect timing Paul I’ve just bought some gouache tubes and struggled to fully appreciate the techniques that can be used. I love your work and always feel inspired by you. Enjoy your time away, it would be great if you could post the odd gouache painting tutorial from time to time after you return!

    These are lovely! I just bought a set of gouache from Windsor and Newton so I'll definitely try those.
    I need your advice on something: I often have "cauliflowers" when I paint with watercolours. I use the Paul Rubens paints which are quite decent. Could it be my paper? I have cold-pressed, acid free, 140lb paper but it doesn't mention 100% cotton. Could that be the culprit?
    Thanks and hello from Canada!

    These were great. I particularly loved the last one. I am getting ready to do a line and wash of the house a friend grew up in. After watching the last one you did, I have decided I will paint it in WC and a second version in gouache.
    Thanks again for all you do.

    Please, more travel poster styled images! Fabulous! That appears deceptively easy and is most interesting to see it done.

      I’d love to see a few more gouache paintings also. What started out looking a little messy, it became a beautiful painting just as I knew it would! As only you could do because you are a fantastic artist!

    What a refreshing tutorial, three different methods and different but similar. Just love the 1930's poster style took me back to school days, learned "stylisation" rendered in acrylics. I am on the "dark side" trying hard to cross back into the light 🤣. Have an oil underpainted, ready for the completion when it calls me again, but loving water colour challenge. Much more difficult. Thanks again Paul

    Thank you so much for this one, these paintings are incredible! I was recently gifted a beautiful box of gouache, but I'm years out of practice and it felt like I was fighting with glue. It was discouraging, but your tutorials inspire me to keep trying and practicing with different techniques. Thank you for helping me pick up my brushes again!
