      The book is terrible and not at all a 'gay love story' indeed I found it to be in a way borderline homophobic. It was a SHIT book, written by a straight guy looking to be 'edgy' at best. Shame this movie is getting this kind of hype

      I don’t see this as an lgbt film but a story about two people falling in love. You fall in love with a person, not a gender. At least that’s how I felt it was like for Oliver’s character. I cannot wait. I’m Driving two hours through the California fires to watch this film.

      saw this movie this afternoon and it struck a chord for me for several different reasons. The first and foremost I was a year younger than the main character when I had my first gay relationship and I remember the confusion and the huge hole that was left when that relationship came to an end. This movie brought right back to that time. It was the most critical time in my entire life up until then.

    Awesome review guys! But for those saying this is pedophilia, it is not. Elio is 17, Oliver is 24, and the age of consent in Italy is 14. Even here in Canada it's 16, I don't understand the confusion. There is no imbalance of power, Elio is very mature for his age, it's not like Lolita where it's about the disgusting hunger of a person in the wrong, it's just meant to tell a story.

      I have never heard the word Ephebophilia used to describe Dirty Dancing, or Rose's engagement in Titanic. Does it only apply to males? Yeah, I thought so. There could be a word for a preference for age 20-25 as well. Words are irrelevant. What matters is whether something is legal or not, and this is legal, in nearly all western countries and states.

    • @johnothelovilladolid4458
      @johnothelovilladolid4458 6 років тому +4

      Zachary Becker Hi. I don’t usually post comments on UA-cam because, you know, people can be a bit abrasive and downright stubborn sometimes. But because I feel exactly the way you do (I’ve read the book and am looking forward to the film with so much excitement) I am going to give my take on the “Pedophilia” and “Statutory Rape” comments.
      There is one essential element in the story-telling of the book that we don’t see in the trailer (hopefully it’s not missing from the movie too). I cannot point it out in any other way than to ask the question: Where exactly in the timeline of the story is the story being told? The easy answer is it is being told more than a decade and half since everything happened. Elio is a grown up man now, looking back to what took place one summer long ago in Italy. Sure, this does not change the fact that it still happened when he was under 18-on which many laws would indict Oliver of rape. But we have to trust Elio, both the 17 year-old intellectual and the wise man that he is as he tells the story: 1.The 17 year-old never felt like he was raped, if anything he felt he was loved, for the first time, by someone other than his parents; 2. The wise-man-present-day-version of Elio would also know he was raped, if he was-he might deny it because he loved/loves Oliver, but he still would know. But for Elio, who has gained wisdom and maturity over the years, it was nothing like that at all. And that is what’s important.
      Or maybe we are all so eager to defend something that does not need defending. Maybe the story was really challenging this norm like it challenges other norms. Maybe some questions, among many other questions, that novel really want to ask are: Does age equate knowledge and wisdom? Does knowledge or wisdom or both equate our readiness to love? And finally does age speak of our capacity to love and readiness to be loved? I don’t think it promotes pedophilia because it does not tell the story from the POV of Oliver (it would be easier to determine regardless of whether Oliver denies it or not), it does so from the POV of Elio and therefore what Aciman might be telling us is that the young people know what love is, even if they don’t know what exactly it’s called.
      Or maybe there is no hidden meaning or hidden agenda at all. The age is just is. It may be scandalous. But Aciman was courageous enough to make a point that just because it’s taboo does it mean a beautiful story is not going to be told.
      Sorry for the TL;DR post.

    @yelyint5620 7 років тому +219

    Haters gonna hate. But I think no one complained about the relationship of the characters Jack (who was 20) and Rose (who was 17) in "Titanic", then why are you hypocrites complaining about "Call Me By Your Name"? You poor haters.

    • @yelyint5620
      @yelyint5620 6 років тому +3

      safe space You are entitled your opinions. It's your right and it's good for you, truly. But there were almost no complaint about the relationship between older person and teenager portrayed in internationally well-known movies like Titanic, American Pie movies, The Reader, etc. If you dont like it, dont read or watch. By the way, you can write your own comment about your opinion, it will be better and in my opinion, it can attract people who have same opinion as yours. Bye, Felicia.

    • @yelyint5620
      @yelyint5620 6 років тому +1

      safe space No..no, no need to apologize. Next time, instead of labelling LOVE STORY with your cheap words under someone else's comment, stay in your own HATE lane with your own narrow-minded losers. You can't deny about millions of people around the world who praise and love Titanic, American Pie movies, Ghost World, The Reader, Memoirs of a Geisha, Oldboy (South Korean film), An Education, The Reader, and so on. As long as the laws of the country are legal and both parties give consent, there is nothing wrong. Most of the 18-yr old kids (except from teetotalers) from USA drink alcohol in the UK and its legal. Oh, yes, you will say it's drinking, not sex. And i'm not talking about sex, i'm about consented love-making between two people who are legal in the particular country. Again, no need to apologize. Because some apologies are despicably worthless.

      @yelyint5620 6 років тому

      safe space >>> Maybe you are talking about that subject (i never use r-word) because maybe that particular r-word you used is 'you'. Hypocrites all do that. Poor hypocrite, still can't figure out what is consented love and what is r-word. And still can't still fight back why other famous films depicting relationships between 17-yr olds and adults weren't criticized before. Bye, Felicia.

      Then this movie sucks already, you have to read the book, not even before you see the movie, but before you can even voice your option on the trailer? Get the fuck out of here. The movie is very clearly trying to spark social commentary and divide, its well aware people are going to love this and people will hate it just for the age gap. if this movie is worth its salt, you'll walk in a nay sayer of minor/age-gap dating and come out, with a different opinion on the matter because you enjoyed the film. if the film can't do that without you having to buy the book than its fucking garbage straight out of the gate.

    At 17, you have figured out who you are in a sense and are your own person. This character is not fucking 3 or 10, there for it is not pedophilia, he is not a child. At 17 you can consent, Elio is the one actually actively going after and coming onto Oliver, Oliver the 24 year old, has not been doing so, he has actually been pretty wary of it, because he is aware of how it would look. At 17 you know what you want and what you are attracted to, or you have that idea. I am actually tired of people who have not read the book, and have only seen the trailer and formulated an opinion with out all of the information, and saying it pedophilia. He is not a child. He is not naive, or impressionable. He knows what he is doing, and he's actually very self ware and extremely intelligent.

    • @jonahkarlin6470

      I've never met a 17 year old who had "figured out who they are" at that age. I certainly hadn't, and obviously Elio hadn't either. He might be precocious and intelligent, given that he's the son of two academics, but there's nothing to suggest that he has the emotional maturity to handle a relationship with an adult. While I don't think pedophilia is the right word to use for this, it definitely was Oliver's responsibility to keep his distance from Elio, and instead he took advantage of him. It's a complicated situation with a lot of morally grey areas, but you shouldn't equate intellectual maturity with emotional maturity.
      All this being said, I'm a huge fan of the book and I'm incredibly excited for the movie. I guess my interpretation of the story isn't the popular one, but I'm interested to see how this relationship plays out on screen.

      I really don’t understand any of this ‘uproar’ either! Where was all this when Titanic depicted a 17 year old girl Rose engaged to a grown man falling in love with another? This is ridiculous.

    Thanks for reacting to this, I love the fact that you guys love films for how they are made and not care that it's a gay romance. I always thought that film makers would hesitate in making movies about lgbt romance because it would only appeal to the lgbt community and nothing more. I hope this will be amazing and well recognized too when it came out.

    I am just as psyched as you guys are. Frankly, I'm not familiar with the director's work but I am familiar with James Ivory's work. I've seen A Room with a View (as well as reading its source material) and Maurice which are both amazing. I've also read Call Me By Your Name twice already and it is phenomenal. And I just saw this trailer a million times and I'm blessed. I can't wait to watch this brilliant adaptation (I've heard such great things about it).

    I saw this film yesterday. It's AWESOME! Luca & Co have adapted Andre Aciman's book brilliantly. Armie & Timothee have a natural chemistry which enhances their great (& heart felt) performances. There also is great humour in the film. My LOL moment would be the over talkative couple at the dinner table. Keep an eye on Elio's parents, particularly Elio's Dad.

    On another note, Moonlight is the most perfect film I´ve seen since Fury Road and Whiplash (yes I still had not watched it). Absolutely outstanding cinematic achievement, so simple yet so perfect. Not a single flaw. One of the best oscar wins ever if not the best. The diting, the atmosphere, the casting, the story...

    • @BCause-qv1mk
      @BCause-qv1mk 7 років тому +1

      Hi Sany, we don't see eye to eye yet again - in my opinion Moonlight was slow burning with disappointing abrupt ending when events finally heat up.
      But when it comes to old(er) men romancing with adolescent boys Italian movie David's Birthday (Il Compleanno) from 2009 has all the right ingredients. The build up, crescendo and decrescendo in this film are rarely seen on great screen.

    • @sanyrub
      @sanyrub 7 років тому +2

      I´m sorry but this isn´t a soap. This is a quality film with art. It´s not about spectacle. And as you can see by the outstanding 99/100 score in a site like Metacritic and the way all reviewers and award season have loved it, you seem to be in the very little minority :) This was damn perfect, there are so many things that have to go well in the making of a film. This has 0 flaws. It´s absolutely outstanding. maybe I knwo too much about films now. Why should a film end in decrescendo? Anyway, I don´t like to mix the soap world and the film world because I don´t acknowledge in this other field people who believe Ryan Hawley would play a great James Bond lol. Cheers!

    • @BCause-qv1mk
      @BCause-qv1mk 7 років тому +1

      Your condescending tone made me laugh a little, and you are the one bringing soap world into this. I'm certainly not an amateur when it comes to arty films, and I've definitely seen far better movies than Moonlight. Awards speak nothing to me, especially Oscars. If it had been a European film it would only be slightly above average but since it has Hollywood's stamp of approval it is an extraordinary cinematography.

    there isn't a score, i don't think, if that's what you were wondering but luca did ask sufjan stevens to write music for the film! three new sufjan stevens songs are featured (an instrumental of "futile devices" and two unreleased songs). also, i know "love my way" by the psychedelic furs is in one scene, along with a piano piece from the novel i believe. this movie is going to wreck my unprepared ass and i can't wait !!!!!
