    One thing I didn't realize until the second time I watched this movie was with Elio and him answering the phone. He's only on the phone 3 times during the movie: the first it's Marzia and he doesn't recognize her voice, the second time he can't tell if it's his mom or Mafalda who picks up, but the third time he IMMEDIATELY knows it's Oliver on the other line, no question. 🥺

    I think Marzia only forgives him because she realized that Elio had a thing with Oliver. And that he was struggling with his sexuality. Again, just a very subtle thing. Elio and Oliver started spending all of their time together and stopped spending time with the two girls. I'm sure they picked up on what was going on.....and that's why Marzia didn't have to ask why Elio was so sad in their last scene together. She knew why.

    • @adrianazuleta1555
      @adrianazuleta1555 5 років тому +143

      Actually, I think the two girls get to fully know it when (after Elio and Oliver go on the bus) Elio's mother invites them both to have lunch with her and Elio's father. I think that is the point when they get to realize everything and kinda learn to be ok with that from his mom... Just another example of the full parent's suport... A little detail that made me like the hole situation even more!
      It may not be the case tho, just my interpretation of that part :) but I totally agree with the reason why Marzia forgives him!

    • @eventplanner461

      @caro I thought it was a reference to marriage/union. When a couple marries, the wife usually takes her husband's last name. Since they are both men I guess they would take eachother's last name. So the "Call me by your name, and I'll call you by mine" line, implies that they are life long lovers in a sense that are taking eachother's identity for their own. They form one bond.

    Another thing I really enjoyed about cmbyn is that the same sex attraction was never a source of conflict or despair, which is so unique. Even if it is realistic that thats what happens, it nice to see lgbt people in movies who can just exist and be happy, not have to suffer for their arc.

    This movie has sooo many amazing things to appreciate, but something I personally really enjoyed is that it never felt slow in a bad way. Like, the movie as you said didn't have thaaat much dialogue, there were long scenes just based on body language, yet they were made in a way that they felt so necessary and the acting just was great. All this moments without dialogue could've slowed down the movie but they didn't, it flows perfectly. Like the scene in the end of Elio crying infront of the fire place, at that point one could just stop the movie and skip that crying scene, you technicaly wouldn't miss anything "important" yet in my opinion is one of the most important scenes in the movie and it's just perfect.

    I agree that the story jumped too quickly to the winter scene. It would have been intense if we had been given one or two scenes showing Elio normalizing and adjusting to life without Oliver during the fall, autumn colors fading in, beginning to get over the heartbreak... and then to get that phone call and have to relive it all over again. All the same, an outstanding movie, and this was one of the best review and reaction videos for it. Great job.

      No. "Does Mom know? I don't think she does" is about Elio/Oliver relationship. Dad lies to Elio in that moment. Luca didn't like the line because clearly she did know but the author insisted it be in there for some reason. Plus, I know it's a bit confusing but Dad didn't confess to almost having a gay relationship. He confessed to not being courageous enough to love as deeply and with as much abandon as Elio did.

So, he tells a white lie until Elio can talk to her himself. I also read somewhere that a scene was cut in the Perlman's bedroom that makes it clear that they overhear the boys. I love that idea.
