You may have a distaste for what could well be an unequal relationship, and I'll join you in that. A large age difference doesn't automatically create an unequal relationship, though. My distaste for unequal relationships comes from the fact that the weaker partner is exploited in some way. That's why I avoid them, either as a potential exploiter or exploitee.
I haven't read the book nor have I seen the movie, so for all I know a perfectly legal relationship may also be equal.

The book is amazing. It's a poetic masterpiece about love, desire, longing and heart break. It's otherworldy beautiful. Hope they do justice to the book.

namaan, Armie Hammer doesn't seem like Oliver at all. However, T. Chalamet does seem like Elio.
Johnniee Larue No problem with the casting. Both of them fit their respective parts well physically in my opinion. Though book is extremely poetic. We mostly read about what Elio's thinking and his emotional delimma and struggle. I'm curious how it's displayed from pages to the screen. From what I've seen it looks like the movie's been done beautifully with actors giving performances of their lifetime but let's see. I'd have killed if they had messed it up.

The age of consent in the majority of Europe is 16. And the lead character is 17 - although the actor is 21
Also the funny think is that after watching the trailers everyone asks about their ages but every single review of the movie I've read hasn't said anything about the age difference.
In the book it seemed like both of the characters were bisexual. So good to finally see a movie with 2 bisexual leads - a shame they'll be labelled as just gay when there needs to be more bisexual representation in all forms of media

safe space you do realize that the age of consent in the usa isn't uniform? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_North_America half or more set the age of consent at 16 or 17. i'm not saying every 17 year old is mature enough to handle a sexual relationship, but that doesn't mean others aren't. i've read the book. the guy didn't groom him, he didn't hurt him, he didn't force him. it's a tale of first love and heartbreak which, if i look back, myself and most of the people i know would say took place around that age.

That's still so fucking sick dont you think there might be exceptions to this law such as close in age gaps (romeo and juliet) over here is USA if you're over 18 and pursue a 14 year old. You'll be labeled as a child molester and in jail inmates will finally give those guys a reality check with forcefully raping, sodomizing with broom sticks, even killing etc for taking advantage
Jason Matthews it’s fucking sick because your morals are based on your laws. In Europe we look at things differently. The age of consent is below 18 in almost all of the countries in Europe, which is why 17 and 24 does not look as “sick” as you describe it.

The age difference is not the factor. It’s not discussed in this movie. That’s what makes this story, so wonderful, no one is being judged or bullied it’s very refreshing. CMBYN takes place in simpler times 1983.
The chemistry between Timothee Chalamet & Armie Hammer is perfection.

I am father of a six month child. Have to say, I felt depressed after completed the film. One of the finest melancholic love story ever written for a movie.
I'm REALLY liking Nicole Lemoine. Especially how she seems to be teasing Jaby the entire time :)
Nicole is on top of this, because the music is going to be so great!!! And yeah, where the mom is stroking his hair, the poor kid is crying for some reason ;-)
Oliver is not really gay Jaby, at least not in the book. Some guys play together though.

That is a good point, how Oliver felt about Elio, while Elio never really knew. Their poor hearts! But my sense is in the book we are told they are likely bi not gay. Maybe the movie screenplay takes a different path with their sexuality.
He's straight and an american. He actually studied italian and piano for this role.

Guadagnino did an amazing job at this movie. Story is fluid, and as the audience you connect with each individual character. You want to tune into what comes next in the chapter for them. Very rich, engaging, and cinematic piece.👍👌 Loved 'Call me by your name'.

I hope you guys did watch the movie and I hope it made you realise what a beautiful LOVE story it is. Elio is 17 which makes him above the legal age of consent. Of course he is young but he is a character who is experiencing his first love and is experiencing the ups and downs of it. I also don’t like identifying this as a “gay” story, to me it’s just a love story. The characters never identify themselves as gay they are just two people falling in love which is so beautiful.

Hey Jaby! I hope you have watched this film by now because it is a must see movie and that it has been nominated and won numerous awards and now waiting for them to win at the Oscars. The lead actor Timothee Chalamet has done a commendable job. Their, Armie and Timothee's, chemistry both in the movie and otherwise is amazing. Hope you watch it.
