So, so true, every day, super charge. I do this while I'm walking. This will build your heart, lungs, arteries and your brain. It will relax your brain to help you sleep at night. All 4 work together as a team.

Started breathing from my diaphragm when I was young; I was in a choir & copied the choir leaders way of breathing. It helps you sing better & also to be able to carry your voice better. That being said, now that I'm older, your video was a good reminder to exercise my lungs better. Thanks for the tip.

Me too! I was reminiscing on my choir days and thought about how much my lung capacity has diminished since then. Looked this video up and it all came back! The in for X number, hold for X number, breathe out for X number really brought me back

Can anyone explain to me how you breathe into your stomach? I've taken yoga classes, watched videos, but I don't quite get it. A yoga teacher from about 30 years ago explained it well once but I wanted reinforcement and I can't find it. You expand your stomach first, then your chest? The doctor here says to expand your chest? That's my instinct but everyone mentions expanding your stomach; I'm confused. (Also what about the reverse?)
Maybe yoga breathing is different than singing, too? (Sorry 7-y.o. comment I'm addressing. It's still a great video!)

@@cockeyedoptimista for me i breathe more from the back of my throat snd pull in with the bottom of my abdomen, so my belly area inflated instead of my chest. It's basically just breathing in towards the bottom of your lungs I think. It's a little hard to explain lol

    • @cockeyedoptimista
      @cockeyedoptimista 10 місяців тому +1

@TabbiCat101 Thank you. I'll have to look up lung anatomy. But that helps a lot! It explains that you just kind of expand your belly, and part of the lung is down there. Or: basically, that it's okay to have the breath inflate the lower abdomen before the chest.
That will do until I can find out more. I'll just do that - which I have done, but felt uncertain about - and feel like I'm doing it more or less right, which I probably will be.
      Appreciate your reply!

thisis probably the most useful youtube of all youtubes to everyone. i started doing this at work one day thinking wht it might do. i had so much more strength in me lifting timber (being a carpenter), then when i cycled home a few days later i went so fast and for a while thought it was the cycling that got me to that point but have sinced tried to cycle that fast but had no luck. i now know it was strenghening my lungs prior to the bike ride that allowed me to pedal crazy. when i arrived home my body felt so alive. rather than use this method i was taking the deepest breaths in and out, not holidng it but i will try that n see what happens. cheers for the video, i think everyone could benefit from watching this and giving it a go

Dr. Mandell thanks so much for all your videos ! I started taking karate in Raleigh , NC back in 1967 . There were only 3 karate studios in town back then . After receiving my 1st kyu I began teaching and telling people who got winded during kumite (sparing) to breathe this exact same method . I had no idea until I watched your video that it would be beneficial to do throughout ones life ! Wish I would have watched this years ago ! Thanks again.

Dr. Mandell I want to thank you for these videos of exercising your lungs and drinking the teas to fight the viruses it is help me tremendously in fact I think that's preventing me from going to the hospital because I got hit with a virus covid-19 I just want to I want to say Dad when you're recuperating at home with this virus you get hit with the lungs you get pain on the lungs you feel shallow you can't breathe shallow breathing so the message of to fight the virus was breathing the exercise that you have given in the UA-cam walking back and forth cuz this virus stiffens the lungs so walking back and forth is your lungs and moving so when I felt the pain on my lungs I would just breathe in and out and walk back and forth no matter what happens at what time of day I would go back and forth and take the breathing exercise and it worked taking the teas eating healthy all fruits and vegetables only no sugar an Elderberry syrup and the Foreigner anything with Elderberry an Elderberry syrup the concentrated one you can't get it anymore they're out of stock and the formula mostly the green tea with the lemon early in the morning it is so important for that I have recuperated from the virus I'm negative and God thank you for all the good work you're doing to help people my son is in the hospital trying to recuperate fighting for his life because he got hit bad with a virus he couldn't recuperate at home because he he got hit with delirium through this virus so his symptoms we're different everybody gets hit with the virus differently it's it's very important to start prevention early on throughout the year cuz we don't know tomorrow and also having a pulse oximeter is important to have in the house to measure your oxygen level thank you again. I discovered a tip to help with this. I don't know if men can do this but here goes.....when breathing IN you should employ the pelvic floor muscle and this in turn allows the diaphragm to inhale more deeply!! You tend to feel the breath in your 'throat' but it's all good!! Give it a try!! It's free. 😙

    Amazing, as always.
I just learnt that 95% of suspected lung infections due to green phlegm, is actually not an infection but viral. The green phlegm is the whiteblood cells immune response which is a good thing. Antibiotics in this case will not help and actually cause more problems such as killing off healthy bacteria and weakening the immune system.
    Hope this helps someone. 🙏

Hi Doc, I have been diagnosed with emphysema in November, 2015 and I'm 23 years old. I was facing difficulty in breathing and if I would explain it technically, I would divide my lungs into three parts: upper, middle and lower lobes. When I used to breathe, I would feel that only middle and lower lobes filled with air and the upper lobe couldn't take much air (infact any air at all) in. This condition would prevail in winters and in spring season. However, in summers, my lungs seem to be working quite fine but I'm afraid that with winters approaching, I would face same condition again. Will this exercise help in alleviating the conditions? And, since I presume emphysema continues to destroy air sacs in the lungs, will this exercise stop the progression of disease? Moreover, any diet or exercise that you would suggest?
P.S. I have never smoked. Cheers!

If you liked this video, you may also be interested to know that there's a new study from the British Medical Journal (which is well-respected) that highlights the gut-lung connection. It's called: Rapid Resolution of COVID-19 After Faecal Microbial Transplantation! Fecal Microbial Transplants (FMT) have a 90% success rate in exchange for relatively low risk. So there is some risk that exists with this procedure. For example, one person receiving FMT got an e-coli infection because the transfer was done in a home setting, not in a healthcare or research setting. When the procedure is done in a clinical setting, the stool is screened to prevent the transfer of aggressive pathogens! FMT is only approved for treating c-difficile at this time, but is being researched for other conditions, so stay tuned!

When you hold your breath. Do you close the airway and like pinching a balloon, or do you just keep it open and essentially hold the diaphragm down and chest open for three seconds. Both? Important distinction.

Dr Mandel, I've been having issues with my breathing for a really long time. I'm not quite sure when it started, and I don't know what could've started it but what i've noticed is struggling to make satisfactory breathes. At some points I have 'waves' where I struggle so much to breathe and I have to keep breathing deeper and deeper and it scares me because I feel like i'm suffocating and in some serious cases when I'm also emotionally unstable leads to a panic attack. But when i struggle with breathing have no relation to when I am emotional. Would these breathing exercises help me?

I was reviewing my medical record after a trip to ER in July. On my chest X-ray it states impression: Lungs are hyperinflated but clear. ER didn’t mention this to me. They had a chest X-ray from 2015 for comparison. If I may ask, what does lungs hyperinflated but clear mean? Should I be concerned?

If you appreciated this video, you may also want to know that there's a new study from the British Medical Journal (which is well-respected) that highlights the gut-lung connection.

Thank you for this. I am obese and asthmatic, I started doing the Pray Fit exercise program and am having a really hard time breathing. I get so out of breath I feel like I might faint. I am going to try these breathing exercises for maybe 20 minutes before I start my workout, do you think that is sufficient? I will also do them when ever I think about them during the day. My hope is to be able to not use the inhalers so much. I will let you know the results of my trial run, the Pray Fit challenge is for 33 days, I am on day 20 but my plan is to cycle through it again.

Loretta Stevens Were you successful? I think the key to it is doing it often. So I've been doing the breathing exercises for 10 min 3-4 times a day.

I'm sick of people thinking that being overweight is "beautiful" or should be "embraced". I'm glad you're doing something about and at that doing your best. Some people talk shit about overweight people yet fail to realize that some people have health conditions like yourself. Wether it's asthma, or many other things that can prevent you from excersize or even daily tasks from being normal. Wish you the best man. Not even talking shit, but if one thing you can be born with at not being good at is breathing sucks. I'm not insulting you. I'm giving you sympathy because not everyone is so lucky to not have it.
